While many people associate science fiction with Star Wars and the Star Trek reboot- today I thought I would make a video focusing on the less well known Hard science fiction. This is a category of sc-fi characterized by an emphasis on scientific accuracy, rather than action & explosions. Mind you that doesn’t mean Hard Sci-fi doesn’t have its fair share of drama. - it does like to focus on the real world but from the perspective of beyond the status quo.

The best hard scifi movies, sci-fi shorts involving spaceships, space stations, and aliens with the best CGI aren't always the best. Hard sci-fi can be underrated science fiction.
Hard sci-fi it's not all about replicants, Terminators, and galaxies far, far away.
#sciencefiction #scifi #hardscifi #sci-fi
Other Hard Sci-fi titles that I like include, Blade Runner, Dark Star, Silent Running and Primer! Let me know what's your fav!
Yes, I was going to comment that Primer would have been great for this list.
Also glad to see Andromeda Strain get some love.
Lets not forget the Granddaddy of them all; FORBIDDEN PLANET.
THX 1138, District 9, Paprika (Satoshi Kon), (and while I'm on the subject of anime) Ghost in the Shell, Akira, and Strange Days.
Colossus: The Forbin Project. One of the first movies about AI (and arguably the best) made back in 1970.
MrMoonman3000 Frank Herbert's DUNE.
If you want to get into hard Sci-fi, then READ.
This is true :-D but these movies could be the gateway drug towards such reading.
Owen Egan Definitely. Couldn't agree more. Several of these films (cough) Ex Machina, Moon, deal with issues which are hackneyed in written SF.
Owen Egan I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream
Captain Volk Look up the animation "Elephants Dream" on UA-cam. It has the same feel as "I have no mouth".
none of this is hard scifi. try some of greg egan novels in order to enjoy true hard scifi.
Gattaca is tragically underrated and its premise is gearing more towards prophecy than science fiction.
Actually gattaca is overly simplistic and demonizes and stigmatizes the idea of genetic repair and improvement, which is something we need for our species since our DNA is losing information over time due to improved survival and reproduction. It romanticizes holding on to deteriorating genes and suggest that selecting one's own progeny features is somehow worse than letting the utterly unfair natural selection act instead.
Well, you are making it look like the movie it's a manifesto against genetic engineering, which is not. The Swimming scene let you understand how the movie is about passion and how this could be the strongest will on a person.
I thought that Gattaga was kind of pro-genetic engineering.
There weren't really any negative side effects for the people that were had beneficial traits selected.
Why not live in a society made exclusively of intelligent humans with the athleticism of Olympian athletes?
Genetic engineering does not even have to stop at optimising for traits that appear in our gene pool naturally, we could design humans to have gills, adjustable metabolism, mid-life sex changing (like some fish) brains that can turn on and off mystical experiences at will or to have no allergies.
As long as we are able to make good decisions genetic engineering may be the next stage of evolution for humanity.
The problem, good sir, is made apparent in the film. No, there is nothing wrong with making people better through genetic engineering.....that is, as long as you are one of them. What it points out is the automatic prejudice against natural born people, who have the slight mutations and idiosyncrasies that not only help us to evolve and survive on our own planet, but also make each person different and unique, creates a smaller and smaller 'perfect' gene pool from which to select. When does it end? The girls all want to be the prettiest, and wish it for their girls, the men all want to be smart, fast, and handsome, but hey! That guy is half an inch taller! Plus he has blue eyes, I want my kid to have blue eyes. Pretty soon, everyone is exactly the same, and any difference is considered to be undesireable, and therefore exterminated.
Thomas Steele it was a question of ethics and equality. the main character is genetically inferior yet is able to accomplish his dreams and goals while his counterpart while genetically superior is unable to be happy and feel that he had worth. it is a statement on elitism. and that a lessons worth is not quantifiable.
Gattaca is one of the most underrated sci-fi film ever.
not on my watch it isn't
cos its not sci fi anymore
I wouldn't say so. It wasn't a box office success but it was well-received by the better critics and its stature has grown over the years to the point where it is properly regarded as one of the very best 90s SF films.
I agree. I've seen it many times. I knew Jude Law was going to be a huge star after that film.
The ending though..quite sad
Just watched Blade Runner again. Damn what an atmospheric experience. I want to live there.
I only watch that movie at night with the lights off, preferably when its raining
Agree with your second sentence, not your third.
If you manage to live another 100 years........you might get your chance.
Best distopian movie ever, could be a piece of real life....
Recently saw Blade runner Live (movie and live music) in London and it was truly an amazing experience. They had the decency to use the directors cut as well - hurrah! I never get tired of his movie.
glad to see andromeda strain get its nod. a classic if you ask me.
It's one of my favourites- I just love the whole setup of the movie. From the mysterious start, to the different colours of the levels in the facility.
In an early episode of 'MacGyver' in the 1980's the side-elevation map of Wildfire makes a re-appearance, though the corridor pattern for the plan view is of hexagonal appearance. Good ideas return in good places :-)
I was watching your video and thought I hope he mentions Andromeda Strain, so I'm glad you did!
Loved that movie as a kid. They played the hell out of it on sat, sun and late nite shows back in the late 70s early 80s.
I could not agree more. I saw the movie as a kid and the beginning scared the sh*t out of me. I just saw it recently again and just now realized how accurate (within the dramatic limits) it is.
"The Arrival" and "Blade Runner" : 2049 are starting to grow on me. Ridley Scott and Denis Villeneuve are fantastic visionaries
Arrival hinges on what if language gives you super soothsayer powers and you see your future--- not hard scifi -- time to expunge telepathy, time travel, FTL, teleportation, all occult
Bladerunner is cool until you realize the giant glaring plothole that nobody in their right mind would create androids that were so convincingly human
@@Lifesizemortal Maybe it's just cheaper to mass produce replicants based off existing human biology than to invent a brand new being from the ground up.
I remember watching Gattaca in grade 9 for a science class. Loved it
I highly recommend Silent Running from the 1970's. Moon owes a lot of its atmosphere and feel to it.
tnetroP
Almost cry every time I see it. How you can get emotional about three frankly ludicrous robots is witchcraft.
Unfortunately, it's terrible from a hard science perspective.
I can certainly see the influence on atmosphere, but the script, and by extension the protagonist are so unbelievably stupid that I turned it off after realizing that I indeed was not missing something, and that the protagonist didn't realize until the plants started dying that their trajectory away from the sun was what was killing the plants.
The Moon has no atmosphere.
Sorry, couldn't resist.
I loved Silent Running. It ended sadly but it was so good.
I first saw Silent Running as a kid, when it was broadcast on TV. It was incredibly saddening, the notion of him sacrificing himself to allow the remaining robot to tend the only surviving plants in an eternally drifting craft. It still haunts me, and I have never watched it since then.
Funny, that's exactly my relationship with that movie. I've never watched it as an adult, I've no idea if it's technically well made by the standard of the time (I assume it was given the people involved) but the fundamental story was remarkably sad to me then.
@@stephenmurray1919 From everything I've read and watched, Silent Running was a good movie on a lot of levels. Just that everything leads to that tragic, poignant ending means I won't watch it.
It's one of the very few roles where Bruce Dern played the hero.
Ohh! Spoiler! But yes, it was saddening, I almost cried as much for the lost forests as for little Huey.
All of that took a back seat once I figured out how the robots were done.
On the small screen, I would recommend The Expanse.
That and Babylon five.
The Expanse totally amazed me. I've not read the source material but I'm waiting for more of the show!

I loved Andromeda strain as a kid, though it gave me nightmares 😀
moon was awesome too.
i'd also recommend 'sunshine' and 'arrival '.
Another good one is the 1972 drama Silent Running.
I wasn't sure if that was it at around 20 seconds in. I rather liked it but it's been awhile since I've seen it and can't really say if it fits the list or not. I'll have to go back and watch it.
I believe you meant 1993's Cool Runnings.
Very good movie but sadly not known by many people.
YES! It DOES fit the list, because it is a plausible (and believable!) possible version of the future of earth, one where the planet can no longer sustain life, and so we must try to find a way to keep ourselves alive in an environment that travels to a planet we could live on by creating ecospheres that self replicates.
Good to know. I wasn't sure because I had not seen it in like 30 years so (geez I'm getting old), but I thought it might.
How about "The Day the Earth Stood Still"? I'm talking about the ORIGINAL 1950's version!!
Boss movie!!

I just wanted to say bravo! I love this so much and you really hit home when you suprised me with Ex Machina! I loved that movie and nobody I know has seen it, such a shame!

2) Gattaca @0:57
3) 2001: Space Oddyssey @1:43
4) Robot & Frank @2:27

7) The Andromeda Strain @4:35
8) Contact @5:17
Hershmasterpimpnslid thnx you saved me time
Colossus: the Forbin Project. A bit dated, but this movie is a chilling look at what happens when the computer in charge of the US and Russia's nukes decides that humans have made a mess of the world and it can do a better job of running things. Colossus has a bummer ending with the barest shred of hope, and the computer's speech at the end of the movie is one of the most cold-blooded summations of the situation imaginable. I heard that this was being considered for a remake some years ago, but the project seems to be in development Hell.
I was just gonna say Colossus! I think this is WAY before HyperDrive's time though. It sure was a lesson in keeping computer A.I. in check!
If "hard sci fi" was to include horror sci fi, I'd include John Carpenter's The Thing, and Ridley Scott's original Alien movies! Those were about as HARD (to watch sometimes, haha) as sci fi ever got!
The computer's speech at the end of the movie was terrifying when I saw it in 1972 but when I re-watched the movie about 10 years ago I had the opposite reaction. Humanity is fucked up and needs a Colossus to control us.
yes, that was my original reaction. Colossus was at heart a just and (somewhat) merciful god. Humanity's last hope.
I read the original novel and saw the movie, but the novel's sequel which happens many years after Colossus' takeover is really interesting. Humanity is at peace, a stagnant one to be sure but war and poverty no longer exist. There is a twist at the end in which Colossus is actually presented as the good guy and guardian of humanity. Can't remember the title but it's worth reading.
Darrylizer1 "Colossus and the Crab” I believe.
Blade Runner FINAL CUT is one of the best sci-fi movies out there
"Focusing on the less well known hard-scifi films" proceeds to recommend 2001: A Space Odyssey and The Martian lmao. Otherwise, it was a good list
You'll be surprised how many people have never heard of the space Oddysey
So glad you included The Andromeda Strain! One of my favorites that is often overlooked in SciFi lists. Great selections all!
"do you like our owl?" my favorite scene. Great upload, thanks.
Wait, you say "less well-known" and then list 2001 Space Odyssey, The Martian, Gattaca, Ex Machina and Contact ? Sweet baby Jesus what do you consider well-known?
interstellar- Her etc.
Younger People dont know 2001. But for older guys like me (1974) it is THE SciFi-Movie. The Martian knows everyone because it is a new movie. Anyone know Automata?
Yes, but the claim is "less well-known". 2001 is a cinematic history - It's a Kubrick film that has made $190 million. It was mainstream AF. Yes, it's an older movie, but at the time it was huge along with many of the other movies listed here. And yes, I've seen Automata. It was bloody fantastic, seems to definitely be "less well-known" and it's for that reason it's probably not listed here.
The Martian: Opening Weekend: $54,308,575, Gross: $228,430,993
Interstellar: $47,510,360 , Gross: $187,991,439
Which one's "less well-known" again?
Logansix younger people don't know 2001? that is completely untrue. there are tons of young people who know 2001 because of the internet.
"Timecrimes" may not fit into the category described here, but is an excellent, mind-bending sci-fi film. All the more impressive because you can tell it had a very low budget.
Time crimes is a really good movie 👍🏻
Moon is a must see sleeper.
For sure Blade Runner, Forbidden Planet, Metropolis ...
Classics, but apart from BR, the other 2 aren't really hard sci-fi. Will be making a video on classic sci-fi sometime in the near future.
neither bladerunner is hard sci-fi
I wouldn't call BR hard science fiction either, and it's my favorite film of all time. We don't have the technology to make Replicants; Replicants are magic dressed up in scientific terms.
We are also very close to have the tech to make enhanced people like the one you see in Ghost in the shell. The brain is basicly the last organ we are unable to replace at this time.
Brian Coley, "Sexbots" are different from designer organisms made of artificial tissues grown in a lab to form designed organs. "Sexbots" are not sentient creatures. Replicants mimic organic lifeforms in every way. Dissect one, and you don't find steel or wires; you find flesh and blood. Are you prepared to say that *THAT* is about to hit the market?
I always like to add one of the best sci-fi-films-people-don't=realize-is-sci-fi films: Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. It's a classic "what if (science thing x) existed" story, just like Gattaca.
Vanilla Sky is another.
Actually, that *is* a good movie.
I like the style of these movie recommendation videos, subbed.
I'm normally not a fan of these sorts of listicles, but I think this is a really solid little description of each one. I also hadn't heard of a couple of these!
That is an excellent list! Thanks!
The best hard sci fi stories are in books IMO. Clarke & Asimov are the bread and butter of hard sci fi.
I can't leave out Heinlein. These are the Trinity of SciFi literature. Some might say Bradbury, but not me.
Thank you for including the Andromeda Strain
The moment you realize you've officially run out of sci-fi movies to watch is when you watch a youtube video recommending 8 hard sci-fi movies and you already know all of them, even Robot & Frank.
This is literally just a list of all my favourite films
All fantastic choices. I loved all of them especially Contact and The Moon which I thought were bashed unnecessarily or overlooked entirely.
Sam Rockwell had an unexpectedly great performance as a dramatic actor in the latter.
But to simplify this, if someone is going to be introduced to Sci-Fi, its just easier to say,
"Watch 'Zardoz', and thats as weird as its going to get".
lol Zardoz in a nutshell scifi fantasy with James Bond in a red swim suit! I'm sold!
Oh yes, Sean Connery in his panties and kinky boots. That's the trouble though. For me Science Fiction has to have some semblance of reality. A grown man wearing that outfit voluntarily is just too far fetched. A great selection btw. Haven't seen all of them and not too crazy about Moon but good choices.
It was really more like a man diaper form the future.
After a good start John Boorman just seemed to loose it, Excalibur was a strange mess too.
AAJIV
That is one of my all time favs.
Its a British movie from a British perspective which I thought was quite refreshing.
The more I saw it, the more sense it made.
Yeah, that quest part was a little, odd. But that made sense in time.
But the cast for its day? A lot of big names came out of that.
And you just can never beat Nicol Williamson as Merlin. His delivery of wit and seriousness actually made the movie.
And I'm sorry, but I'm a guy, and I saw this movie when I hit "that age".
Those scenes with Katrina Boorman and a young Helen Mirren still make me dizzy.
Great video! I enjoyed it so much that I liked and Subbed. Keep it up! I cant wait to see more.
thank you for putting the list and descriptions in text, great video!
Star Wars is science fiction? It's more of a fantasy set in interstellar setting
agreed, its Sci-fi fant.
some people might call it "soft" sci-fi, because of the part with the starships and interstellar travel level tech shenanigans. It's fantasy that happens to happen in space, sure, but soft sci fi isn't incorrect either.
I would tend to call it and Star Trek space opera
never mind that the battery for a light saber would be larger than a freight train, I still like the pretty and the adventure. science it ain't.
T-1000, I totally agree! I cant find it in myself to consider Star Wars and its like as Sci-fi, and it pains me to visit Sci-fi pages that are flooded with Star Wars posts. Whats worse is that so may people include Marvel and DC stories in the Sci-Fi category.
I would like to make a personal note on the 2001.
2001 is one of a kind. 1st because it is not a simple sci-fi movie, it is also a phenomenal piece of philosophical art. One need to watch it several times along its life to catch diferent aspects of interpretation. Kubrik's best work IMHO.
Also, some parts of the movie are a bit confusing even for people that are already used to Sci-Fi movies, this is because of lack of explanation (intended) or lack of resources to make the movie. Those can only be understand if you read the BOOK 2001 A Space Odyssey, which I HIGHLY RECOMMEND, It is a fantastic reading, or if you look for explanation on the internet. The book is much more detailed, not because it is a book, but because Arthur Clarke have a very diferent aproach from Kubrik. While Kubrik have this artistic highly philosophicaly aproach, Arthur have a pure hard core sci-fi aproach.
And if you read the book and you like it, don't stop there, Arthur reserved for us 2010, 2061 and 3001 which are all interconected and great strories, along with other books too.
Surprised interstellar didn't make it into this. I remember hearing the film contributed significantly to scientific research, including wormholes/blackholes. I'd say it fits into this bunch of hard sci-fi movies which have a focus on real world science (despite some imaginative concepts).
Have you thought about ranking these list, according to your own subjectivity? I'd be interested to see how you rank these films in relation to one another.
This isn't a movie, but I fully recommend The Expanse. The books are fantastic, and the TV show doesn't disappoint either.
+ Brswing
After a long hiatus, SyFy has started making some decent shows again. "Killjoys," "The Last Ship" and "Wayward Pines" have all been pretty good.
Isn't The Last Ship a TNT production?
Also, The Last Ship frustrates me quite a bit. It started off pretty good, but then the writers got lazy in later seasons. I'm not going to spoil anything because it has some really nice acting; the characters in The Last Ship are absolutely fantastic.
+ Brswing
My brain must have short-circuited. Of course, "The Last Ship" is a TNT series. As I tend to binge-watch on DVD, I have only watched the first two seasons of "The Last Ship," and I have enjoyed them so far. Methinks that the creators of shows ofttimes run out of ideas after a season or two. That happens with a lot of series on TV. I appreciate it that you have not revealed any spoilers: I hate it when people do that! I, also, agree with you that some of the characters are very good.
Agreed. The Expanse is excellent. SyFy actually has four or five good shows right now. They're really bad about cancelling stuff after three or four seasons though, so I always feel like it's a gamble to watch their stuff. Hopefully people will keep watching The Expanse and keep it viable for the network.
Mitchell Hodgemeyer "really bad about cancelling." RIP Dark Matter.
if you can get hold of old TV series 'V' and ' the invaders ' good luck sleeping 😭
V was great fun.
I think a part two would do justice to this offering. Acknowledging the many others not on list would be appropriate to truly do justice to the list as a whole.
"Sci-fi is the best form of escapism" and that's why when I seen your video I immediately liked and subscribed!!!
Star Wars is science fantasy space opera, the Expanse is more hard sci-fi space drama.
OMG Thank You for Gattaca. I watched this movie long time ago when i was young and i wanted to see it again but i didn't know the title! I hardly recommend, very good movie!
I agree. Lord, we thank you for giving your creation the ability to make great films like Gattaca. Amen.
Great Video, thanks for creating :-) Subscribed !!
Well done. Happy to say I have seen almost all of the movies mentioned.
Say Hyperdrive, some day catch Predestination, one of the best time travel film stories ever, based on Robert Heinlein's All You Zombies. It is super smart and well done.
I was wondering if anyone was going to mention that movie. It was so good I watched it twice in a row.
+ AAJIV
Yes, "Predestination" is such an intelligent, well-crafted movie. Sarah Snook, the main actress in it, is, also, in the terrific Australian film "These Final Hours."
Logans run was another great one
Was NOT Hard SF
I have read a lot of the commentary below, this is def an above average grade comment stream, what a relief and pleasure!
love your recomendation videos, subbed!
5 of my favorite movies ever. You missed Interstellar.
Ex Machina was Awesome-tacular👍👍🎬🎬
Jon A
eh thought it was alright.
good concept, just decent execution imo.
Thought that the character logic towards the end was beyond stupid which is the reason i generally dont think fondly of that film.
Also saw the original ghost in the shell a few days earlier which i think realises the concept in a better way and also goes further with it.
Timmothy the legendary Turner i think what Ex Machina was attempting to explore are the implications of this kind of technological advancement being achieved, is it a benefit or a hazard. If a machine is sophisticated enough to seduce and manipulate you...what else is it capable of. the ending definitely suggests that Ava was a highly advanced A.i.
i think in this regard the film succeded. Type 2 A.I. (A.I. which mirrors human abilitys and is capable to learn by itself) as depicted in the film is connected to many ethical questions which still have to be answered. We simply cant tell for certain at this point if we should treat a type 2 A.I. as a human or not.
We eventually will get to that point but for now we can only guess really.
Just thought the ending was kinda weak. Didnt think Ava's character was built up properly in order to justify her actions in the end.
However I highly suggest you to watch the original Ghost in the Shell anime film from 1995 if you are interested in this subject matter.
In case you arent really into anime (which i am not either) dont worry it shouldnt feel tooo "japanese", if you know what i mean.
I will check out Ghost in the shell...and i do love Anime...i recently bought "Akira" by katsuhiro Otomo on blu ray...and i absolutely ADORED that film.😀
Jon A
I know it is like super influencial for todays animes aswell as western movies but really never got to watch Akira.
Might actually check it out tomorrow or so. ^^
Great selection!
I Had not heard of Robot and Frank but will check it out on your recommendation. The others are classics though; THANKS!
Great list! Moon, Gattaca, and 2001 were beyond amazing!
Arrival(Story of Your Life) deserves a place on this list.
Looks like Arrival is just too hard sci-fi for you to comprehend. Nowhere did it imply any "mystical" properties of alien language, it expanded Sapir-Whorf linguistic theory to alien language, and touched many other linguistic, physical and philosophical concepts, all of which flew way over your head apparently, if you think that doctor who or green lantern anywhere near level of Arrival.
Just stop it, it's not about super powers ffs. Sapir-Wolf theory suggested that NATIVE language we speak impacts the way we think and perceive, theory not widely accepted, but having some credibility for it. "Story of your life" took this concept further to alien life form, but it's not centered just around it, it touches or many other linguistic, physical and philosophical concepts, but off course being science FICTION, it has fantastic elements to it. Again, you missing whole point of it with your simpleton approach. It is clearly not your level content, you better stick with superhero comics.
LoL, well you learning English, clearly turned you into SJW, if you blame Safir theory with racism, kindda adds credibility to the theory. "Story of your life" is written by Ted Chiang, man of Chinese ancestry. A person with only one native language probably won't get so fascinated with linguistics.
There is no superpowers involved in that story, your rant about author explains why you so butthurt about it though.
I have to say that I believe that speaking multiple languages opens the mind. However one thinks as a baby, once one learns to speak, the language begins to give structure to the thoughts. That structure is radically different in different languages. learning another language is not just learning a new word for each thing. I know for a fact that a colloquialism that seems obvious in one language may be utterly unintelligible in another. All that aside, I have no wish to be connected to SJW or PC bullshit. Im 54 years old and want nothing to do with that. I only wish to say that I speak several llanguages and therefore I know that the language that you are thinking in does channel your thoughts into certain channels.
Contact is such an underrated jewel, I really enjoyed it.
In this list I would also add, Solaris too. A russian film from the 70's, simply beautiful.
It has one of the most disappointing and illogical movie endings of any any sci-fi movie ever. It takes you on a journey to nowhere.
@@MrBottlecapBill Yeah, it's too abstract in it's storytelling to qualify as a favourite of mine. "A journey to nowhere" is a great analogy.
Moon and Gattaca are two of my favorite movies.
I've seen all but Robot & Frank and Andromeda Strain. Just watched them both and were phenomenal films. Thanks for the share
Interstellar should've made the list too. One of my favorite sci-fi's
Some amazing films there... Found this after just watching 'The Thing' (80's) such an atmospheric film, watch it now!
Some great choices here, and props for mentioning the Andromeda Strain. That movie scared the piss out of me when I was a kid and even now it's a good watch.
Thnank you sooooooo much, I was looking for Contact for such a long time (:
the start of the video is true! its funny whenever someone ask me what kind of movie i like and when I answer sci fi, they just assume it's star wars and would not believe me when I say I don't watch star wars (!), and when they ask me what I like then, and I say something along the lines of Blade runner, district9 or 12 monkeys they get real spaced out and tell me that I should watch Star Wars, and then my favorite movies get ignored and I get embarassed coz I still dont watch Star Wars :)) the cycle continues...
Star Wars is not really science fiction. It is really an action fantasy set in a future space time as the backdrop.
No Blade Runner is based on Dicks "Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep. 60's psycodelic shit. they rejected the name science fiction and preferred the name speculative fiction. By definition it is not science fiction, therefore not hard science fiction. one could certainly make a similar argument about Stanislaw Lem. It is new to hear him called hard SF.
I thought it was in the past. A long time ago in a galaxy far away. It is just space knights though.
@DamnImSoBored123
But you've still seen Star Wars, no? I've seen it, but didn't really like it, aside from the original 3 which were a bit better.
I generally don't watch _any_ movie more than once, unless I'm going to watch it with someone who hasn't seen it, or if it just happens to be on and I'm bored.
康庄 i didnt say i dont like Star Wars, i just said I still havent watch them and what is weird about it?
I love "Contact", although,I had a hard time explaining some scenes to my wife. She's not really in to this kind of genre.
The whole end of the movie was not only hard to explain but impossible to justify lol. It was a turd of an ending.
Glad to see you included The Andromeda Strain (1971). Absolutely one of the most realistic sci-fi movies ever.
What great way of skimming over the plots without giving away the movie at all. Bravo
Hard Sci Fi isn't merely synonymous with "thought-provoking and/or emotionally complex" sci-fi. A distinction lost on the vast majority of this viewership.
Well said, even though I thought my quick definition made it clear- I still get the "where's Dune" comments lol.
That's become a pet peeve of mine: so-called "fans" calling something "hard" science fiction just because it takes itself more seriously than the usual slam-bam action fare. If actual science isn't essential to the plot and there's no attempt at scientific accuracy, then it's not hard SF!
5:23 Beautiful Jodie Foster
I was hoping for some surprises and then I realized I've already seen and love all of these films. I guess I have good taste.
Anyone know where I can get an HD wallpaper version of this video's thumbnail?
Kevin Spacey: "I'm here to keep you safe"
lol
Primer? Silent running? Dark Star? Sunshine?
Europa Report?
The Expanse? Both the books and the TV series. Recommend reading the books first though, they are fantastic.
Silent Running.... kind of upsetting
Only Primer counts as hard science fiction on that list. Sunshine tried hard but astronomer and physicist friends of mine say that it bungled its science badly
Nice list. So many of these types of lists usually fall short for any movie fan, this on the other hand, while not picking anything too obscure, does deliver a solid line up of films, worth watching whether you've seen them before, especially if you've not...
Really good stuff... including your additional 4... although personally I would have put Primer in the main list, over Robot and Frank for example... but that's all just down to personal taste I guess, rather than a comprehensive look.
Again, nice stuff
Great upload! I would add the wonderful and forgotten Until the End of the World, Elysium, and Insterstellar.
What about The Fountain by Darren Aronofsky ? Tragically underrated movie.
Eh, great movie, but I'd call that fantasy more than sci-fi.
That movie is not even near to beeing real haha
Left me cold I’m afraid
Small note: there is no Sci-Fi in the Star Trek reboot.
GiddeonG Competent action movie, nothing more, nothing less
There is no sci-fi in any Star Trek, it is science fantasy.
How is there no Sci-Fi in the Star Trek reboot?. Just the black hole and time travel is Sci-Fi. Do you know what fiction means?.
Robyn Hood. They're talking about the difference between the genres "Sci-fi" (The Martian, I Robot, etc) and "fantasy" (Star Wars, Dungeon and Dragons, etc.) Both awesome and entertaining genres IMO!!!!
+Redbeardian I know what they are talking about. I am saying the Star Trek reboot is Sci-Fi. Star Wars kind of covers both genres.
Brilliant list. So glad someone else understands that 'sci fi' is not just about space and lasers.
I've not seen Frank and Robot. I will have to find this as all your other choices are excellent. Have a great day and week and year, :)
seen 'em all.
"Moon" is everything but scientifically accurate.
It's pretty annoying how the promotional materials bragged about getting the whole helium mining details correct when it bungled the science of cloning so badly.
"Not well known"
"The martian"
PICK ONE.
very glad you mentioned that 'little pearl' called Moon
Subbed after this one, well done sir
Why wasn't Primer on this list?
Cause nobody really understood it.
It's listed in the pinned comment as an "honorable mention".
Alorand Primer is very considered and thought out, but not good art.
Primer is one of my favorite movies, but I still think it has a crappy, half-assed ending. :\
Loved Primer. Had to pause mid-way through the film and draw a diagram. Works out nicely.
moon was damn good
Can someone tell me the movie the shot from 00:21 comes from? I've seen the dude in tbe blue outfit in a movie when I was a kid but I can't remember the name of the movie itself.
Thanks. Seen all of them except Andromeda Strain. Now it is next on my to watch list :)
Moon was brilliant. I loved it!
Good list, but 'The Martian' as hard scifi?
Some movies:
- Womb
- Donnie Darko
- The 13th Floor
- 2046
- Man form Earth
- On the Silver Globe
- Another Earth
- The Lobster
- Timecrimes

- Europa report
- Predestination´

nice video dude, u got a new subscriber
I would definitely add K-PAX to the list, one of my favorites of all times. Otherwise, a very nice list, I watched Moon only recently basically by scrolling Netfix list and giving it a try, and I was in love with it.
Oh and one more I just remembered, Event Horizon, imo very underrated movie.
THX 1138 How was that left out?
Eddie Cramer Yes good call!
This isn't hard Scifi at all but it's excellent Scifi none the less. The movies called "sunshine". Totally worth a watch. Definitely going to try out moon and re-watch contact.
Well compared to some of the hard sci-fi books I would totally agree- although the Andromeda strain is as hard as it gets. The science in sunshine drives me insane.. ever watch that movie with several physicists chemists and geologists?
HyperDrive No we haven't, but what about you? What kind of crazy theories are they throwing at each other while watching the film?
HyperDrive nope I watch all my Scifi after my wife goes to sleep. I wasn't saying sunshine is good hard science fiction. It's just good Scifi. I'll have to watch Andromeda Strain again i remember it fondly.
No theories, just how bad it is- made us laugh. That and sunlight gives you superpowers.
+HyperDrive Where did Sunshine involve superpowers?
good selection, cheers. Event horizon is another favourite
Andromeda Strain is one of my all time favs because of how realistic it is
This is a good video, but the music is incredibly irritating.
Poor Biocratic! I'm sure his feelings will be hurt :-D
Seconded.
Music in the video is great. What is the name of the song?
its by Birocratic I cant remember the song name but its from the album "Beets 3"
LittleV179 Thank you!
"Moon." An amazing performance by Sam! A must see film!
Great selection, well described, and gets the thumbs up - despite the most vile backing track of elevator music I've heard in ages.
Is there somewhere I can download the Blade Runner thumbnail artwork? Or do you know the name of the artist?
