I feel like a lot of Cass’s betrayal would have made a lot more sense if instead of being Gothel’s daughter she would be the Dark Kingdom’s real princess. It would’ve given her an actual claim to the Moon Stone as her destiny and left Eugene’s backstory alone.
Great point. It would have made more sense if she were robbed of a destiny to have been a princess of a kingdom. Not just "I wanted the horrible child abusing mom! How dare you have be chosen by her over me!"
Yeah ! I still don't understand this whole "I m taking what's mine!" thing ! She CHOOSE to stay by Raps's side! And now she decide that she's overshadowing her? It's not fair! Like she says she's "waiting for her time to shine"... but she's litteraly on a "saving the world" adventure!.. Why isn't that enought??? I do adore this character... but this still bugs me...
@@lyna4164 Rapunzel burned Cass's hand after admitting that she couldn't control the hurt incantation and she attempted to bring Rapunzel back to her senses to get her out of a crumbling structure. Rapunzel in the very next episode says: "I had everything under control and had she stayed out of it..." P.S. She doesn't apologize to Cass in the episode, Cass just says "I'll get over it" as if that fixes everything(pretty sure Cassandra knew Rapunzel wouldn't own up)
I always laugh my ass off when Rapunzel sings “Cassandra listen-“ and Cass interrupts with D8< “I’M LISTENING!!!” Like she’s so pissed she interrupted her in song.
The word “listen” aggravates Cassandra because she doesn’t like being told what to do. If she Rapunzel hadn’t used “wait” and “listen” maybe Cassandra would have stopped.
Cassandra's father freaking raised her just so she could be like "the abusive mother that I don't even remember and luckily didn't stay long enough to psychologically hurt me like she did rapunzel was taken away from me FROM RAPUNZEL.. and im ANGRY!!!". The dude raised you but I _guess_ you won't respect him just because he's not biologically related to you. Bruh
And then Cass has the guts to get angry at him for not telling him who her real mother was but then not listen to a thing he has to say. I'm pretty sure that if people found out who Cass' mom was, the kidnapper of the beloved princess, they would have treated her badly. Once she was old enough to know how to keep a secret he should have told her, sure, but maybe he thought Cass would just suffer more knowing the truth (which she really did once Zhan Tiri talked to her).
You guys really need to read the book Mother Knows Best Cassandra is not a gothel's daughter because she never lived in the cottage to begin with she is having to get these fake memories which some of the memories might have been Rapunzel memories from when she lived in the cottage until she got her memories changed to think she was living in the tower for her whole life
As soon as I learned the reason for Cassandra's betrayal, I *immediately* thought up a better one that's close to what you came up with: What Cass saw in that room was a glimpse of the future--specifically, Rapunzel being destroyed by the combined energies of the Moonstone and Sundrop. Normally, Cass would just tell Rapunzel about it, but due to recent events, she knows that Rapunzel wouldn't actually listen to her, so she kept quiet and took the Moonstone before Rapunzel could, getting corrupted by its power (and possibly possessed by Zhan Tiri) as a result.
If I recall correctly, Eugene specifically says that Cass could do something Rapunzel didn’t like to protect her. The stage was set well enough for your idea. What could’ve worked (but sadly Chris chose not to do) would be that that was her original intention WAS that, but after taking the stone, it made her remember Gothel and THEN Cass becomes corrupted.
If you pay close attention to Varian’s vocals in Ready as I’ll Ever Be you will notice that his voice occasionally waivers. On “I’m the bad guy, that’s *fine*” his voice goes a little teary on “fine”, also “and there’s only one answer *for me*” again another teary waiver. He is just a kid, at the time he’s processing grief with NO ONE CARING and then gets thrown in jail. God I’m sorry for him, I wish I could help but haha it’s fictional so I HAVE TO LIVE WITH THE SAD
It's even more healthy. This Series panders way too much on traumas, it's unwatchable to Kiddos after "Happiness is" from Season 2 hiatus. Cass is cancelled from her true love for Raps, romantic or unconditional. Fanfics give her this right, with more sense, if it's not with shame.
I wouldn't say that it panders to trama. Heck I would say that it kinda sweeps some of them under the rug sometimes compared to the source material. While I'm not going to say burn canon in favor of fanon there are somethings that can be further explored or what ifs that would be interesting to see done.
True that, might look some up for this series later, there’s some legitimate cool plot lines too bad it’s kinda skewered in Canon, so Fanfiction is the next best thing to make a story with potential into what could’ve been and even fix the story, in an alternative timeline.
Yeah but now Disney hiring people to make fanfiction in The twisted tail series we shall really what if scenarios on Disney movies but what makes this very interesting is tangle books description watch once was mine which this book literally describes Rapunzel having destructive powers that comes from the Moon her parents giving her to mother gothel and the new original character with Flynn so first of all did the writer of this book need to see if he's in the side to do this based off of the series or is it just a coincidence that this just has to have Moon Palace in the book the world this book be connected to the series or not
Indeed There's one fanfic (on Archive of Our Own) called "darkness exists to make light truly count" which is a really good read. It's basically an AU where Varian and Rapunzel grew up alongside each other in the same tower. To be clear, I'm not the author of the story, just recommending a good story to read
Eugene after being forced into a hostile and unsafe lifestyle with no parents or home for 25 years: Rapunzel after being raised by a neglectful and emotionally abusive captor for 18 years: Cassandra after being raised in a loving and stable home by an adoptive father:MY LIFE IS SOOOOOO HAAAAAARD!
well that's about past, but both eugene and rapunzel got their very lucky moments to shine (rapunzel turned out to be a princess and eugene found her AND turned out to be a prince) which they to be honest didn't really work for.. Everyone around gets those moments (even Hookfoot although he DID work for it but it's still luck) and cassandra doesn't. Everyone's lifes go from bad (or not that bad) to pretty good while hers stays mediocre. She's working her ass off to get to her dreams (and then an ex-criminal gets her dream job BEFORE her just because he accidentally banged a princess) waiting (in the wings) for her lucky moment but it doesn't come. She gets an opportunity to lead the guards in the end of the first season but it leads to nothing as she gets off on an adventure woth a princess who trusts a random lady she met hours ago more than she trusts cassandra. And it builds up till cassandra injures her hand because of all this nonsense and HAS TO RELEARN SWORDFIGHTING AGAIN (because she still works her ass off while princess just doodles her as a villain thanks i guess) And then while everyone accidentally got royal parents her mother turned out to be a hated villain... By this point it's not surprising that she decided that her lucky moment isn't coming and all her hard work leads to nothing so she just tried another method.
@@АлисаБугрова-ш1н I honestly think that, if that's what the writers wanted us to understand then they should have pushed the line even harder... because we don't get to see much of her effort that often... like it's there for 2 or 3 épisodes but the rest of the show she's just seen as badass, not "underrated" (ok that because rapunzel can't be seen as a bad person but still my point is still valid) Plus I don't like the morality behind her arc. Like it's ok to become a bad person because you don't get the glory you're looking for. (I say it's "ok" because this part of her rebellion is never point as bad, she always explains her thoughts in songs and even if SHE's pointed as the vilian, her reasons are never pointed as bad) We have to empathize with a person who's that much searching for glory that she's willing to sacrifice everything she has, and has build because... she has no luck ? I really don't like this idea, like... the world doesn't work like that... Your choices are what make your dreams comes true... If she wanted glory, she could have, I don't know... LEAVE CORONA? Like a said previously she chose to stay x) I know it really sound like the boring "american dream" but it's not, at least I don't think of it that way (because I'm french btw if you missed my mistakes xS)
It's like how Dr doofenshmirtz is. Dr doofenshmirtz had alot of bad things happen to him but he was still a kinda good person who wasn't really a villain. The alternative universe version of him only had his train taken from him. And he ended up taking over the planet and being a villain.
@Ultra Trash, Honestly; it's bad writing, that Rapunzel being raised by a neglectful and emotionally abusive captor for 18 years, isn't even talked about that much in the show. The show SHOULD have talked about Rapunzel's trauma and insecurities and how life WAS hard for her. But it fails to do that.
A main problem with Cassandra was that she was the main creator’s pet. She became what he wanted her to be, apparently against the advice of storywriters. Meanwhile everyone in the fandom adored Varian, and that pissed him off, so Varian got totally sidelined. Also, there were supposed to be four seasons, but it was cut by Disney to three after the show had already started, with the third having to be significantly shorter. That’s why the first and second seasons have heaps of filler but the third season is super rushed and leaves much to be desired. And everyone was salty about that whole Varian’s dad’s note that he writes while getting trapped by the amber. It seems super ultra important at the time. The creator and others hinted that it would be important. Then after he is out of the amber, he’s like “all it said was I’m proud of you lol”. Don’t get the fandom started on Varian’s hair-stripe. Or anything really Varian-related. When it turned into a snake in the finale, it felt like a huge “haha fuck you guys for making a big deal out of this”, and there were so many people raging on the discord server. Ah, good times.
Glad Varian is normal instead related to the moon opal. I never liked the moon Varian theories at all. He is the badass normal with genius level intelligence. That's all he needs to be.
@@Passions5555 Agreed, I think it's more interesting that a normal person with no powers can still be a formidable threat and intelligent, rather than being given godlike powers for no reason.
@@Passions5555 I feel like he should have been related to Demetrius or something. Like give both Demetrius and Varian a hair-strip so we know they are related
@@Dream_Sweet_In_Sea_Major I don't know about him being related to him at all. I am content with Varian being a man of science who has the potential to be equal to Demanitis in intellect, skill, and innovation. A worthy successor. I do however think it is a crime that Varian NEVER got the chance to interact with Demanitis. A woeful lost in opportunity.
Rant about Varian: Varian’s a kid. He’s a child, a teenager. His father is dying in amber and he wants to prove he can _DO_ something to help him, that’s why he does awful actions. This is one of the most effective and impactful ways to may me sympathize with the villain, because he’s a child. He’s around 14-15! For the whole time in the season one finally I was yelling “TALK TO HIM!” Because that’s what everyone needed to do. Of course, he’s dangerous, but when he had A MENTAL BREAKDOWN IN FRONT OF RAPUNZEL, I THOUGHT, _THOUGHT,_ THAT THEY’D AT LEAST TALK TO HIM. BUT THAT DIDN’T HAPPEN. It pissed me off, I wish they’d _talk_ to him.
EXACTLY! after trying to break the amber with her hair, and hes crying about it, rapunzel and her family just hug each other infront of him and DO NOTHING. like, way to rub it in that you have a happy family while his father is trapped infront of him
@@louisthehedgehog2005 If this was some random ass person who kidnapped her mother, I'd agree with that sentiment. However, this was her supposed friend that she ignored several times after he begged for help with his father.
Fun fact: In the animated Mulan. The first half of the movie had songs in it. Once they reach the village where everyone was killed and Mulan findd the doll of the dead little girl. The movie avoids song to set a darker tone. (Except maybe the ending song) I wanted to comment this because you talked about Varian singing on his was to Corona.
Also I feel Eugene shouldn’t have been casted aside. He was the OG descendant and Cass feels like a weird addition as well as some of the weird visual actions. Like guys, you don’t need the flirty side looks to show they are close.
@@Passions5555 Yeah and when you get them too close with making facial reactions that look too ... lewd or flirty it becomes baiting which happens a lot

Yeah it is essentially her feeling like she can finally take her place center stage why would she despair over getting the power to take what she feels is her rightful place at the top.
it still feels really tonally weird and its still tied to the whole stupid "cassandra's evil now" plot like, Cassandra turned evil and now her song has a happy, uplifitng tone to it rather than a villain song. It feels WRONG.

@@TrueLiesLost The best songs are used to tell the audience a story. The story wanted to tell the audience that Cas was happy and felt she was doing the right thing yes, but it also wanted to convey that she had betrayed Rapunzel and was going to be the bad guy of the season. If they were going to convey her as anti-hero it would have made more sense, but for the story they were telling, the song should have been able to convey both happy triumph and sinister foreshadowing / betrayal. Music is a powerful medium and it was underutilised in this scene. To contrast, 'Let it go' was originally conceived as a villain song, but it was so triumphant that the story was literally rewritten to make Elsa a heroic character. In this case though I think all they needed to do was change to a minor key or add a little dissonance to the chords whenever Rapunzel was in frame. They could also reduce the backing instrumentation as the song goes on, as if members of the chorus are abandoning Cas in her quest. It would have been good to make her victory seem a little hollow and convey how she's on her own now.
I never got Cass's betrayal either. It just came out of nowhere. Like I get that she wants to be bigger than she is, but her whole story could have been that she's not her mother's daughter while being hypnotized.
The most ridiculous part is how she blames Rapunzel for EVERYTHING wrong with her life in such a venomous and horrible way. I have no sympathy for Cass, she was cruel to everyone even her dad who was such a caring father to her when she was abandoned by Gothel. Rapunzel wasn't guilty of harming Cass like she was of being absolutely uncalled for with how she treated Varian, to Cassandra Rapunzel was only guilty of disagreeing with her once or twice and it wasn't world ending things.
I would've loved it if she were Edmund's child instead of Eugene. In "Waiting in the Wings," she sees a phantom rider who looks like her. I thought it was all set up for her to gain her freedom in the Dark Kingdom.
In "Crossing the line" the tonal dissonance is the point. It's a fall from grace, but Cassandra sees it as happy and triumphant. Also I'd like to point out, that in the parts where Cass and Rapunzel are Rapunzel's words are backed with a calm, sweet song, because she's trying to deescalate the conflict, while Cassandra is backed with a heavy sounding electric guitar. The weird mismatched tone throughout the whole song is the point.
I do agree with the idea of making Cassandra's song sound more heroic than villainous as it's through her perspective, but I feel like completely leaving out a villainous tone to it made it too triumphant. It felt like we were supposed to be rooting for her instead of watching her begin to descend into villainy. I still enjoy the song and understand what they were going for, but I feel that adding a bit more of a darker or corrupted tone could've helped Cass feel more like she was becoming a villain that thinks she's in the right
Omg, Varian's hair stripe. I still remember how the writers were all "Every detail MEANS something." So OF COURSE we went crazy on theories. And one day, and I am NOT KIDDING, the director of the show, legit told us "we used it because it was cool and lighted up this character" I... I'll never be over it lmaooo, we even though it was to missdirect us but NOPE 😭 Like, if it was in a modern world, okay. In a fantasy world? Where hair colour is VERY important??? And in the color blue?? No 😭
Let's be honest, that kid's hair has been bleached, burnt and blasted so many times that he's lucky he isn't bald. He probably had a chemical burn on his head and the hair that grows out of the scar is discolored.
I was really disappointed that Eugene was exiled to the background as he was one of my favorite characters. I also wish they had emphasized on his past, his family, and his connection to the dark kingdom. I wish the show has also focused more on the relationship between Varian(still disappointed that he never got his own spin off) and Eugene as they both had connections to the dark kingdom. Eugene being its prince and Varian being the son of a member of the brotherhood(god I wish the brotherhood was explored more. In fact everything involving the dark kingdom should have been explored way more). Also the idea of seeing a dark kingdom led by a moonstone Eugene waring with a Corona led by Rapunzel would have been awesome too bad we won't see that.
This is one of the few reasons I didn't want to watch the series even though I do watch the clips or listen to people talking about it. I don't really enjoy a lot of characters but I absolutely love how human Eugene is; to hear how he doesn't get much attention in the series puts me off, mostly because he was a well-rounded character to me in the movie :(
Well I finally finished watching the series a month ago and It was underwhelming and somewhat dissatisfied by the end. There’s cool elements in the show, ESPECIALLY WITH VARIAN, THE DARK KINGDOM, ZAN TIRI, Demanitcles, AND THE BROTHERHOOD!! People and Lore that definitely deserves to be explored more. Well there’s always Fanon to fall back on when the Canon fails me.
Yeah it’s pretty much why I didn’t watch this series. I loved the dialogue between rapunzel and Eugene. Heck the dude is my fav Disney ML next to Kuzco. So when I heard tangled got a series I thought “nice, more adventures with rapunzel and Eugene.” But nah that did not happen.
This stupid series completely destroyed Flynn's character. They reduced him to the dumb boyfriend side character in favor of Cassandra and gave all the development and emotional scenes to Rapunzel and Cassandra when in the movie it was about Rapunzel and Flynn, and they were completely equal and equally developed. They both saved each other, instead of one person doing all the saving. In the series Rapunzel just does all the saving! Also, in the movie they were dual protagonists and Flynn was just as important as Rapunzel. In the series Flynn is completely sidelined and the trauma he should have is never mentioned. Instead, it’s all about Cassandra. It’s because of frozen, they gave rapunzel a sister and focused only on the sister relationship while dumping down the boyfriend. It’s also because of stupid modern feminism where they always have to portray every man as a weak, stupid Idiot and every woman as a Mary Sue! That’s just turning the sexism around and discriminate men instead of women! I really hate that, Flynn deserves better! What makes me feel worse about this stupid series is that I listened to the Tangled Songs and Story CD and there the narrator literally says at the end that Flynn mattered more to Rapunzel than anything which is true in the movie but definitely false in this stupid series. There it always seems Like Cassandra Matters more to her than Flynn and that makes the whole ending of the movie unbelievable where she was willing to sacrifice herself Just to save him because she Loved him so much. So it Just makes No logical Sense that she would suddenly Always Put a Person she met afterwards before him If she really loved him as much as in the movie. And I hate that she is such a hypocrite in the series who lets Cassandra Always insult him without saying a Word, keeps secrets from him, draws his face on a punching bag and never even apologizes and rejects his proposals but gets Mad when her supposed true Love for whom she wanted to Go to hell says Something against Cassandra. That is the Most toxic relationship I've ever Seen. And what I hate about the whole marriage Thing in this context is that they are basically saying that it's Not ok to marry someone whom you deeply and truly Love after a few months but it's OK to try to give up your entire freedom and basically your entire life for someone whom you Just met three days ago. If they Love each other that much that they would do Something Like that after only having known each other for a few days than their Love is so strong and true and then they could and should marry after a Short time Especially considering the time period the movie is Set where they could only truly be together after being married. And If Disney wanted to Show a couple Not marrying so soon they should have taken a different couple than Rapunzel and Flynn because they proved how deeply and truly they Loved each other after a few days and since they almost Lost each other it would make Sense that they wouldn't want to lose more time together after they saw how Short life can be and besides, their Story Takes place in a time where people married early. They should have rather Had Tiana and Naveen marry only after a few years because they dont seem Like they fit very well together and didnt try to die for each other after a few days and furthermore their Story Takes place in the 1920s, Not the 1700s. They would have been perfect for Not marrying immidiately, Not Rapunzel and Flynn who seem like the worst candidates for this in my opinion. And that whole rejecting marriage plotline is the worst Storyline I've ever Seen. They send the Message that marriage is a prison even though you Love each other and that is such a horrible Message. And it's Especially horrible how in the Episode beyond the Corona walls, it seems Like that she never wanted to marry him at the beginning of the Episode which raises the question why the hell she is even still with him If a life with him seems so horrible to her and also why the hell she wouldn't want to marry the man she Loved that much that she wanted to Go to prison for for all eternity in the movie. It Just doesn't make any logical Sense and is inconsistent with the movie and also the Wedding Short where she looked so deeply in Love and so incredible Happy. It Just doesn't make Sense that she would have rejected the proposal before. And whats worse is that in that Episode it seems Like she only changed her mind about marriage because Stalyan wanted him which makes it seem like she only wants him when another girl wants him which is so incredibly toxic. If someone considers marriage as a prison, then that means they are subconsciously thinking about cheating or breaking up! I analyzed this once in school about a book where a guy who considered marriage as a prison in a similar way as Rapunzel in this stupid series, ended up cheating on his girlfriend! And that is precisely what would happen in real life! When someone rejects marriage, the relationship is over! And I'm pretty Sure the writers of Tangled intended for tangled ever After to Take place shortly after the movie because the little girls of the movie seemed to be the Same age in the Short and Wikipedia also states it was originally intended to Take place immediately after the movie. The series Just doesn't seem believable and seems Like it Takes place in a completely different universe as the movie. And I Just can't consider it Canon because of all These reasons and it's obvious that it was written by someone else than the movie. So, Right now I Just Count it as Not Canon to still be able to watch the movie. If I Had to Count it as Canon, then I Wish Flynn would have stayed dead at the end of the movie and wasnt brought back to life. It would have been a very sad and tragic ending but it would have at least been better than showing such a toxic relationship between two characters who were both trying to sacrifice themselves for each other.
Honestly, Cass betraying Rapunzel and seizing the moonstone didn't feel out of character to me after going through two seasons of Rapunzel constantly undermining her boundaries and taking her opportunities. It was her motivations afterwards that didn't make sense.
YES there were like... Three different occasians where Rep basically took away or held back Cass's ability to do things she *truly* wanted (being the strongest warrior in corona, going to the warrior girl kingdom, and i think one or two other things) and the (totally false of course) idea that Rep took Cass's mother away from her because Rep was better or whatever was basically the breaking point. And Cass was alwats made to feel lesser than Rep, just a worker under the princess
I feel like Cassandra's betrayal makes sense in the perspective that she's already sick and tired of the princess receiving all the glory and recognition, and she's left waiting in the wings. The biggest slap to the face being that her own mother even treated her that way. Even as a child Cass was cast aside for this literal golden child. We saw how heartbroken she was in that flashback. But this is also in context of Cass knowing that Gothel was an evil person. She grew up with the yearly reminder of the grief this woman brought to her kingdom, every time the lanterns were released into the sky. Cass's jealousy is 100% emotional, and not very logical. I guess it depends on you, whether her inferiority issues are enough of a justification to betray her best friend
They're not justifications, but they're EXPLANATIONS. Cassandra was obviously not justified, otherwise she wouldn't be the freaking villain during season 3. But I guess some people think that all characters in all media have to act perfectly logical and rational and all of their actions must be justified. Something like "moral greyness" is apparently completely lost on these guys.
As for Eugene’s impact on the story, they didn’t do nearly enough. They should have made him have a battle with Cass, have some dialogue Eugene would say like “I the prince of the Dark Kingdom destined to inherit the moonstone. You, the adoptive daughter of the captain of royal guards. Our destinies appeared to have been swapped.”
Disney's grown a reputation of using great songs at the wrong time. "Into the Unknown" was sung when Elsa was planning to go somewhere she knew all about, and "Show Yourself" was a duet with a character who specifically told her to hide herself. I think they keep using songs from earlier drafts without updating to account for story changes.
@@thunderbird1921 oh yeah Frozen 2 had issues and there were things that were really random and weird. Personally I think frozen 2 was just a cash grab and really wasn’t planned till frozen turned out to be such a hit
Agnarr was the one who told her to hide herself; I agree that Iduna really wasn't that useful and was a bystander in an extremely abusive situation, but their father was mainly the one who wanted Elsa to hide herself and preached it to her.
@@NyxieLove22 I saw a whole video on this actually, the animation team was trying really hard everyone was working crazy long hours on it to try and pull it together by the release date because disney was so so SO adamant about it being released on the date, they wouldn't let it be delayed to better the quality. Because of the time crunch and the huge script changes that happened so close to the release, a lot of frozen 2 ended up choppy and unorganized and a lot of it just didn't make sense. It's a shame that if they had had more time, then it could've been better.
Thats probably exactly what happened with I Will Make You Proud. It was probably meant for a different point in the show but they didn't want to get Alan Menken to write another song pssh
Honestly, I saw his design somewhere and it got me to watch the show. But after noticing Varian not being in a lot of the episodes, I just stopped watching.
Y'know what's a fun detail? Varian is shorter than Raps in the first season but nearly her height in the last season, I love shows that have kid characters grow up. Varian's villain and redemption arch was done so well and they just dunged it with Cassandras. You get why Varian's angry and watching him fall hurts. He was a kid who just lost his father and a genius so left unchecked he could potentially be dangerous, which is what happened but after he had time to process everything he realized the error of his ways. While Cass's just felt so superficial and her motivation after the betrayal is pretty vague. Topping it off with a her dying out of no where as redemption, that's such a cop out. There was seriously no set up for Cass dying, like at least show that the stone made her sick after it was removed or something.
Also Cass’s whole “I’m always second to you, people care about you more than me” shtick. Like NO DUH Rapunzel is literally the only child and heir to the throne of Corona that had been missing for 18 years….she’s literally royalty and you’re the adopted daughter of the captain if the guard who’s acting as a handmaiden aka (basically) lady in waiting to the future queen. I love Cass but that was stupid thinking, and her whole “People love you more than me and I also blame you for being kidnapped by my mother who was abusive to you!” was absolutely terrible. Her lack of a true redemption arc was also a travesty (Varian was also a victim of the skipped redemption part of his arc) I also feel as though she should have been the villain for half the season and than been on redemption and helping the other for the other half.
honestly Cass didn't deserve forgiveness. lets think back to how no one wanted to forgive the kid who litteraly was a kid and no one helped him get his father back and he got mad but never wanted to hurt anyone. AND no one forgave him until he stopped the destruction. meanwhile Cass made efforts to hurt Corona and everyone in it in everyway but Repunzel was like "she's hurt and she's my best friend" GIRL she isn't the one who's father was frozen in ice bc u didn't help him. it was literally such a screw u to Varian...
Ikr? I personally headcanon that Varian was actually pissed (or at least bitter) about that, but didn’t want to start anything, and even if he did, he didn’t think he’d be listened to.
Ikr!! I think if she was forgiven at all it should have been a gradual thing that made sense, I always felt bad for varían and wished they spent time on the interesting world and character building then the filler episodes that didn’t make sense half the time
I still wanted to see Cass get redemption, but I wanted the writers to have the guts, to have Rapunzel actually take a dark turn and threaten to do whatever it takes to take out Cass, rather than just the whole, "I dont want to fight her, because she's my friend, and friends never give up on each other".
Varian: *Just wants his father to be proud of him so he did everything to save his dad. Cass: *Adopted by a guard who's always proud of her, and have friends that loves her. Also Cass: *Listens to a ghost.*
Cassandra was an interesting character when the writters didn’t make her into gothel jr also we were all robbed of a varían and Cassandra villain team up cause them working together as villains would’ve been interesting
better idea: have Varian act as a villain working alongside the demon person whose name I can't spell. Have her use him for her plans while promising to help him solve all the problems in the world.
Yeah but now Rapunzel's parents are the horrible ones and mother gothel is not because in the book well once was mine Rapunzel's parents gave it to mother gothel so yeah now her parent was a horrible and Cassandra's parent is not evil
@@tkyng2885 I was hoping that the ghost was really Mother Gothel manipulating Cass to do her bidding and get revenge or something like that. It would have tied in great to how both she and Rapunzel were abused by her and technically sisters, and the effects of that abuse can manifest in different ways with different family members.
I would have prefered it if they had scraped the "Eugene is the lost prince of the dark kingdom" storyline. The series kept bringing up destiny and such but I liked the way the movie did it, that Eugene met Rapunzel by accident and that he was just an orphaned thief. He was interesting and important enough without being a prince for no reason. I thought it was too cliche so at first I wondered if they were gonna reveal that Eugene wasn't the kings son and that the king only believed that Eugene was his son because they looked alike, but then he could have adopted him or something. And wouldn't it have been kind of funny if it turned out that Eugene's doppelganger (don't know if I spelled that correctly) was the real prince? 😅
Not a fan of it either, and it's not like they even did much with it (other than working as a red-herring with "who is gonna betray rapunzel? noo it's totally not cass see eugene is the prince of the dark kingdom time to have an identity crisis because destiny blah blah"...maybe if they actually did more with the plot it could have beengood but I think they could have found other ways to give eugene stuff to do
I agree, for me not every Character needs an interesting backstory. Heck some don't need one at all. My reason for this is because it what makes the character more interesting. Fans will create theories that will never get confirmed. But having a cliche backstory makes you wish that you never knew the story of the character in the first place.
Saw a comment saying Cassandra should have been the princess to the dark kingdom to give her more claim to the moon stone and to put more weight into her feelings that she waiting for greatest when she was originally suppose to be inherit a kingdom
Tbh alot of the Eugene being sidelined made me frustrated considering he was a main character in the movie. Its especially annoying when they downgrade his character quite a bit. And this really showed in the worst fear episode where most of the main cast got serious fears but Eugene's was a cowlick??? Not rapunzel heing hurt not the time he died but a cowlick. Rapunzels character seemed off as well and they just kind of chopped it up to her being locked away for years.
What makes me feel worse about this is that I listened to the Tangled Songs and Story CD and there the narrator literally says at the end that Flynn mattered more to Rapunzel than anything which is true in the movie but definitely false in this stupid series.
Afaik the issue with Cass was that they swapped out her motivation for betrayal with season 3, her whole issue before then was being stuck as a sidekick who has her entire life decided by other people like almost getting sent to a nunnery at the end of season 1. She even got a song about it with Waiting in the Wings and got an entire season of conflict with Rapunzel ignoring her suggestions once Adira showed up and increasing amount of super powers making her job as a bodyguard completely for show.
I think the direction they wanted to go in was Cassandra wanting to be in the center stage and that ghost child (Whatever their name was) telling Cass the stones were meant to be hers was basically giving Cass the validation she wanted. But that's not the direction they wanted up taking, and honestly, it would have made Cass's motivations so much worse. Instead of "I'm upset because my mom picked you over me," it'd end up as "I'm mad because I'm a bratty child who's not the center of attention."
Yeah, they gave her a lot of buildup to it, but the problem is the catalyst (i think that’s the word for it). Instead of her being mad that Raps was abused and she wasn’t, she should have been a lost princess of the dark kingdom (since they really didn’t do anything good with Eugene’s backstory). Then she would feel like she ACTUALLY had a destiny that would be stolen by Rapunzel. After all, she saw how badly Raps was hurt by Gothel.
Hezuneutral: Pascals an iguana! Kristoff: I’m gonna tell her. Anna: Don’t you dare! Edit: I’m just saying, he’s a chameleon not an iguana, scary stories couldn’t get away with it and neither will you.

@@visko6203 Well, I guess when looking at the map, it does look more like the moon and sun stone are shooting from France. But every Disney source says that Corona is in Germany.
I actually hated the “dark prince” plot point, so I was happy they glossed over it. It felt forced, cheesy, and sort of took away a lot of what makes Flynn cool as a Disney male love interest.
I just read a long post about all the crazy shit that happened with the creator of the Tangled series. Certain things make more sense now. At some point the creator was getting into fights with fans online, saying that Varian fans aren't "real" fans and being salty about how popular Varian got, weirdly fixating on Cassandra and saying she was based on his crush, etc. I went through a phase of being really into this show, but I didn't know things went that far 💀
Whoa. Weird. Honestly, because of the way Varian & Cassandra were handled, this TV series is... kind of a clusterfuck. The two main conflicts - Rapunzel vs. Varian and Rapunzel vs. Cassandra - feel weirdly forced and inorganic. These kind of friend vs. friend conflicts work better when one friend is doing the wrong thing for the right reasons. Not when one friend is selfish or over-the-top vengeful.
Was the post called "Tangled Salt review" or something else? There are many problems with this show, especially how Rapunzel neglects Varian because she just loves to sit around and mope and only be concerned how she feels
I feel like Cassandra probably would have ended up with Rapunzel if they made it for a bit older kids like you were thinking about. And if Rapunzel and Eugene weren't made for each other(literally) in the movie. But in the show they literally gave his role to Cassandra. Am I the only one who saw the wink Rapunzel gave her? If they wanted to prevent Rapunzel and Cassandra ships they would have given Eugene more of a prominent role instead of making him a sidekick and like I wrote not giving his part to Cassandra.
Rapunzel & Cassandra's friendship was a rollercoaster. First they get along, then Cassandra betrays Rapunzel, the two girls fight each other, then they team up to defeat Zhan Tiri and they are friends again!
For Varian's hair stripe, there was suppose to be a Varian spinoff which was suppose to be his journey to complete something his mother started but didn't come back from and his mothers backstory and I think it would have explained his stripe a little but I think Isaac Carlson's theory was pretty accurate, but we won't get that spinoff because Disney didn't think it would be popular and dropped it.
Honestly I thought it would have been more interesting if Eugene had been the one to grab the moonstone and had to face Zhan Tiri in an attempt to protect Rapunzel after learning about what happened to his mother from King Edmund. Cassandra as she was written was awful, I’ve seen people online come up with better story arcs than the one the show gave her.
@@gazelle_diamond9768 This comment is over two years old, and I’ve moved on to different things since then, but I’m here to say that I stand by my comment. The show itself is poorly written, not just Cassandra. But let’s focus on Cassandra for a moment. Cassandra was written as the biological daughter of Gothel, whom the Captain of the Guards had adopted. She’s a few years older than Rapunzel and rough around the edges. She’s goal-oriented, and although she is a Lady-in-Waiting, Cassandra is dissatisfied with that life and wishes to become a guard member. However, she fulfils her duties, takes care of Rapunzel, and has a bit of a frenemy situation with Eugene. So, that’s her most basic characterisation covered. All in all, an interesting character. My dissatisfaction begins when we learn that she’s Gothel’s daughter because the narrative did Cassandra dirty. I honestly saw the twist that Cassandra was Gothel’s daughter coming from the first episode, but I digress. Throughout the show, from the beginning, it’s evident that Cassandra is dissatisfied with her position in life. She knew she could do more and felt like the world was holding her back - which it did. She gave up opportunities to help Rapunzel, but she was also shown to be intelligent. And that’s the thing: Cassandra was smart. Although she was often annoyed at Rapunzel’s naïveity, she knew she had been kept hidden, isolated, and imprisoned. Because of that trauma, Cassandra would have known that Rapunzel had nightmares about Gothel. When she reaches the Moondrop after learning about her and Gothel’s relationship, Cassandra turns around and directs her rage… towards Rapunzel and the Kingdom of Corona. And why? To me, it made no sense that she'd do this. Cassandra wasn't shown to have a bad life. The captain of the guards raised her, and although she’s dissatisfied with her position in life, she’s still well-loved. Cassandra's anger was so out of character that it threw me off completely. I remembered talking to a friend about it at the time (I’m no longer friends with her because she was toxic), but she tried to claim that it made sense because “Gothel loved Rapunzel more than Cassandra.” But Gothel didn’t love Rapunzel more than Cassandra. She didn’t love either of them. Cassandra would have been smart enough to understand that. Let’s put it into a modern perspective for a moment. Imagine a woman abducting a baby girl and imprisoning her in her basement. She has a daughter of her own that she doesn’t love but at least takes time to at least feed. The daughter is eventually taken away due to neglect, and eighteen years later, the baby girl is found and rescued. The two of them meet, and the daughter starts attacking the girl and yelling at her because she "stole her mother's love". No one in their right mind would see that as a rational reaction. But that’s how the narrative portrays Cassandra and Rapunzel. I don’t have a problem with Cassandra being Gothel’s daughter or her becoming a villain, but I do have a problem with how the narrative victim-blames Rapunzel for Cassandra’s trauma. Cassandra’s arc was poorly written, and her redemption was unsatisfactory.
@@cthonisprincess4011 Gee, I wonder why the emotionally manipulated Cassandra would turn her rage against the people who, ultimately, are responsible for her never getting to fulfill her dreams. Do you think Cassandra wanted to spend the rest of her life as a royal handmaiden? When her dissatisfaction with that position have been evident since the beginning of season 1? Are you actually fucking serious?! Rapunzel, Cass' father and the kingdom of Corona are the ones who never allowed her to choose her own path. So now, she finally GETS to choose. This was her chance, her ONLY chance, at least from her perspective. And she knew that this would mean she'd have to stand against Rapunzel and Corona, because how could she not after taking the power of the Moonstone? This entire argument just makes no sense when you actually watch the freaking show and pay attention. It's literally right there in "Waiting in the Wings" and "Crossing the Line". Just... fucking... use your ears and brain!
I hated how in the finale, the only reason Cassandra and Rapunzel became “friends” again was cause Zhan Tiri took the sun drop and the moonstone. If Cass showed remorse before she lost her power than her redemtion would have worked a LOT better. But instead Cassandra only apologized cause she got caught. I also really hated how they sidelined Eugene. He was the main character of the movie, he had a lot of potential and fans already loved him. But instead the create a completely new character to replace Eugene. Eugene was done dirty this whole series and that fact honestly makes me not like Cassandra.
Exactly, Cassandra didn't finally made a choice to be good again, it's just that her powers to be a villain got stolen in a very stupid way (Did Cassandra really expect someone like Zhan Tiri to be hold back by a few black stones? She did a lot of dumb things in the last season but that one took the cake for me). Cass and Rap never had a real talk about why Cass did what she did, why Gothel didn't value any of them and she shouldn't be missed, why Cass already has a family in her father and friends, why Cass isn't just Rap's shadow, how Rap could treat her friends better and like her true equals etc. But no, just have Cass cry after she loses her power and help Rap destroy the villain who is obviously everybody's enemy. That will fix all the hearthbreak between the two of them and Cass' trauma, right? And I hate how the show tried to prove it as "See, if you don't give up on your friends they eventually turn around!". That's an unfair and toxic mindset. Giving up on people can be the right choice and that isn't something selfish or pessimistic. You just can't help people who don't want to help themselves or who won't communicate with you. I had a close friendship in which i was like Rap and my friend was like Cass. Spoiler alert, my Cass didn't turn around, she just chose the friends that were supporting her unhealthy choices and blocked me out of nowhere without any explanation, even after I told her to just tell me if she wants to end the friendship and why and I'll respect her wish. Sometimes good people choose a bad path in life and there's nothing you can do about it aside from removing yourself from the situation before you get sucked into bad stuff yourself. Yeah, it's good to try a few times to help someone, but once you or the people around you start getting hurt, fuck that. You can keep the door open in case that friend turns around, but you need to set healthy boundaries for yourself and keep emotional distance.
@@vuivraalbastra Right! The show was legit like “wow she almost killed my whole kingdom, my family, my friends... We should save her! She still has good inside!” Like what?! That’s not how it works! I hate shows now portray toxic friendships. The same thing happens in Raya, She ra and probably other movies/shows too.You don’t need to befriend your abuser. It’s teaching wrong lessons.
@@vuivraalbastra Eh, to be fair Zhan Tiri was completely powerless, and it was only through dumb luck that she happened across Varien's chemicals when Cass wasn't looking. I'd understand Cass believing that trapping her in unbreakable rocks would be enough to keep her contained... Zhan Tiri probably wouldve never escaped if Cass had just suspended the cage a little above ground lol
@@skye4942 tbf, Adora didn’t expect Catra to turn around and sort of gave up on her for a while until Catra did something to help. this. eugene was a much more likable and interesting character and i didn’t dislike cass (i actually liked her) until the end of season 2 when she got so one note and lame
3:10 That's not fair comparing Tangled the Series to the Prince of Egypt because The Prince of Egypt is literally the greatest animated movie of all time.
The main issue is that the review doesn't mention Frozen or Wicked, which are more direct inspirations for Tangled: The Series (Like Idina Menzel and many of the actresses who have played Elsa in the stage version, Cassandra's Voice Actress has played Elphaba in Wicked). If you want to accuse "Nothing Left To Lose" of not being edgy enough, why not compare it to "No Good Deed" or "Monster"? Why not compare "Crossing the Line" to "Defying Gravity"?
I loved that movie. Showing history as it should be presented. Too bad people just see missionaries anymore as people shoving "religion" into peoples faces :/
Not to mantion these two shows have COMPLETELY different tones. This lady was just too dumb to undertand the meanings of the songs. She might think she knows something about musical theather but clearly she doesn't
I think it would be a much better storyline if Cassandra found out about her mother being Gothel and fell into a deep state of guilt and anguish. Finding out her mother was Rapunzel’s abuser and the reason she didn’t meet her parents would break her, leading to her stealing the moonstone out of fear of Rapunzel possibly dying or losing herself and causing more pain, especially since she didn’t know she was the daughter of the person who killed her love interest. If Cassandra stole the moonstone to protect Rapunzel, the moment would be much more emotional, also presenting the opportunity for a heartbreaking scene as she fuses with the stone, losing her mind. This guilt and vulnerability will make her a perfect target for the main villain to manipulate her and make her think her actions are helping Rapunzel. Any slip up could cause her to think she’s becoming more like her mother, and this would make the manipulation much more powerful and logical: afraid to lose herself and become the abusive person her mother was, Cassandra is lost in the pattern of hurting others and following Zahn Tere (sorry forgot how to spell their name) in order to prevent becoming her mother. Cassandra becomes so lost, and Rapunzel would be more moved to help her and show her the reality of Zhan Tere’s lies. This would make more sense, since her ‘destiny’ was never connected to the moonstone, it is clear she always wanted to be the hero of her own story, never second best, and her sole purpose aside from this is to protect Rapunzel. THIS is Cassandra’s destiny, showing her dedication to Rapunzel, but also her vulnerability and how Gothel’s behavior affected her as well. Plus, it would leave some bonding room for Eugene and Cassandra, since they share a common interest in keeping Rapunzel safe. It would also provide more logic behind Zhan Tere easily influencing her emotions- kidnapping Varian because of what he did to Rapunzel and her mother, and following along with Zhan Tere’s plan. She would become dependent on Zhan Tere to reassure her that she was being a good person, helping Rapunzel, and straying far from her mother’s path. This would allow Eugene’s destiny to be explored, since he is the most connected to the moonstone apart from his father, and he could be the one to help Rapunzel reunite the stones, since they are together. One idea for a positive incantation for the moonstone would be mental healing or repair, considering the sunstone can physically heal and destroy surrounding beings, plus, the moonstone has been shown to drive others mad and this power could reflect Cassandra’s state of mind when under the influence of Zhan Tere. This would further prove that the stones are indeed opposites, healing and destroying different parts of a being. Sorry this was long, MASSIVE props to anyone who read this far, I just really enjoyed this idea rather than the repetitive and exhausting plot we did get. Great show!
I actually came up with an idea. If the story was changed to have Cassandra take the Moonstone to protect Rapunzel then in the series final I think Cassandra demanding that Rapunzel gives her the Sundrop would stay but Cassandra wants the Sundrop so she can unite the stones instead of having Rapunzel do it because she wants to protect her.
I agree, Eugene was just there as a comedian in the whole series and because of his less screen time,we never got to notice his personality development. Like few episodes back he is stupid/dumb and suddenly he is serious. And the fact there was no tension like in tangled movie, the storyline of the series was just to messed up.Edmund ,Varians family ,the dark kingdom, the past of the stones ,aghh there are sooo many good stories unexplored😢
(rant in-coming) The FRUSTRATION of seeing Rapunzel just... never even bother to go check on Varian after the storm passed?? Rapunzel from the movie would have legged it there on her own the moment she knew her parents were fine. Why is this one so negligent of her friends who mean so much to her?? The monologue you had Rapunzel give Cass after her betrayal is all I would have ever wanted her to say in the show. And Cass literally left her father to die at some point, left Rapunzel to die once or twice, and also in one episode slashed her sword at a table KNOWING Varian was behind and that she could have easily killed him. She went full crazy and then they just.... let her get away with it because she felt sorry AFTER she lost everything. If you only apologize once you have nothing left to lose, do you even really mean it? Cass literally got everything handed to her, a loving father, great education, and a chance to have a stable future, and she's jealous of the abuse victim for having powers again briefly. Amazing. I actually really hated the parallels between movie!Eugene and show!Cass at the end, Eugene was a great character in the movie and Cass does not deserve to get the same great scenes as him just to tug at the viewers' heartstrings.
Rapunzel was AWFUL herself at times. She had anger issues and berated anyone she saw as challenging her or not doing what she personally wanted. IIRC she told a guy whistling annoyingly that "if you don't stop, I swear I will THROTTLE you!" Holy goodness, this is the show's heroine?!
@@thunderbird1921 you can at least excuse rapunzel's anger by saying its from her trauma. Cass has no excuse for any of her behaviors, she has no long lasting childhood trauma to my knowledge. She was not raised in an abusive home, her mother abandoned her, but she did not go through any sustained long term abuse.

I totally agree. I think it is because of the way tv show music is written. Generally the composers only have a few days to write music and are generally only given a basic plot of the episode and may not even see the script. My guess is that they just misunderstood or didn’t have enough information to understand the scene properly. I could easily be wrong though and the song might just be light and fun because they want to keep little kids interested.

I really cannot understand this show's pacing with villain arcs. I didn't think it was handled well when Varian became a villain who revelled in acting like a villain. I felt like it was like a switch flip.... BUT BOY did it fell 10x worse when it happened with Cassandra. She was my favorite character before the Moonstone drama and the Gothel reveal. She went from great friend to traitorous arch-villain with no buildup to it. It made her go from a favorite character of mine to a character I struggle to find myself enjoying when rewatching the series. It was so stupid. I also hated that the show felt the need to make Eugene a royal. It felt stupid and needless and I didn't like his dad or his goofy shenanigans. I liked Eugene in this series for the fact that he showed a LOT of growth as a character with wanting to atone for his criminal past and to be good for Rapunzel and to be responsible. I liked that a lot, but the sad downside is that he really got turned into a comic-relief side character in the narrative a lot of the time. I also wanted Rapunzel and Eugene to adopt Red and Angry since the idea of the adopting twins would fit the fairytale where Rapunzel births twins.
Indeed. The whole "revelling" thing is quite tricky. You should avoid it if you want the audience to think the antagonist has some good inside. I mean, did Zuko ever revel in hurting people when he was burning down villages and hunting down the Avatar? Nope. If he did, it would be way harder to sympathise with him. On the other hand, Azula & Ozai WERE psychos. They enjoyed being evil. And they DIDN'T get redemption arc. Writers just gotta be careful with extreme emotions. A little psychotic break here or there could work even if they want the antagonist to get a redemption. Like, they laugh maniacally because they think they finally won but a few seconds later they start crying because they're lost and all this violence didn't bring them any closure. But actually ENJOYING being evil? Feeling glee while hurting others? That's a big no-no for antagonists. That's pure, irredeemable villainy.
@@ThePreciseClimber the reveling thing I can sort of understand since I feel Varian thought since he has been treated like the bad guy in his life that now that his life is crashing down around him he will embrace the part willingly. That being said though they took it too far. It's like the writers were trying to imply that this ( being evil) was his true nature which is stupid and unfair to his character because he was shown to be a genuinely good person by nature and tried to do the right thing even if he sometimes failed at it and caused problems. Nothing suggested that his sweet, kind hearted ways were all an act and showed to be averse to violence. Certainly not reveling in it and relishing being cruel to others. His villain arc pissed me off.
I think you shorten Cassandra's problem if you look at her reasons for taking the moonstone ... They're not that stupid after all. Cassandra has always felt undervalued, second-rate, meant to stand somewhere aside while others shine. This has been highlighted several times on the show. Everyone thought she was worse, that as a girl, she wasn't made to be a guard. In season 2, Cassandra goes on a journey with a friend, but suddenly it turns out that their friendship is not so sweet. Cassandra is afraid that Rapunzel no longer trusts her, and later her friend literally burns her hand. Later, the manipulating spirit shows her a possibly traumatic memory (the loss of her mother, who seemed like a good person to Cassandra). Cassandra must have been feeling hesitant, but I don't think she had yet made the decision to take the moonstone back then. She probably took it after learning that Rapunzel could die by touching a stone. This is where my little theory comes in. I believe that Sundrop, as the sun (positives, happiness, optimism) automatically makes you optimistic Mary Sue with a golden heart, and Moondrop, as the moon (dark, evil, pessimism, trauma) automatically makes you worse. This theory is very plausible. How else to explain Rapunzel's ideality and the sudden change in Cassandra's character and the fact that Cassandra had an old character right after losing the stone? Continuing, however, the moondrope did not fully control Cassandra. When she heard "listen" - she listened. But the moondrop, reminding of the harm done, causing the urge to revenge, reacted to the "wait" - Cassandra did not want to wait, and the moonstone strengthened her hatred (proof: after the words "wait" moonlights flashed around Cassandra). In the following episodes, Cassandra was alternately herself and alternately a moondrope. The presence of Zhan-thiri strengthened the moondrope's reign over Cassandra. I think Cassandra didn't want to admit how many reasons she had for cheating on Rapunzel, and she found the argument about the mother the best as it was emotional. Cass's betrayal wasn't meaningless. It was a combination of emotion, trauma, distrust, loss of mother, waiting in the shadows, manipulation and the magic of the stone. And yes, I know there were characters who were worse off than Cass, but a human is an individual, everyone will react differently to the harm done. I'm not saying that what Cassandra did is good. I'm saying she had reasons. * * * Sorry for my bad English.
Eugene wasn’t a good character in this show. He was completely ruined by becoming a comic relief character. I do agree through that him being a prince is unless. however I also think that Eugene being a prince is worse then people think it is. Besides Mulan, Rapuznel was one of the first princesses to fall in love with a man who wasn’t a prince. Eugene was far from one. He went from a selfish thief to a caring man who is changing his ways. Ever since Tangled there hasn’t been a long term prince love interest (like a prince who the Princess ended up with).
I'm curious about Varian, that's why I've listened to how you talk about him. At first I was totally confused by this drastic change of character, from a sweet little boy to an evil genius. It took me a while to understand that he was young and how horribly he had been treated. When the subject comes and begs for help because his dad is literally dying right now, you probably don't throw him out of the castle and have him run through this snowstorm again to watch his dad die! Come on, it's not wise! All this royal family is one great disappointment. I remember very well the scene in which the whole family hugged after the whole incident and poor Varian was looking at it, standing next to his father enclosed in amber. I just have no words. I liked him as a villain because he had at least some motives. It only annoyed me that he missed the entire second season, only to show up in the third, where he was only doing a minor supporting character. He has too much plot power to be pushed to the background. Overall, there was not enough of it. His transformation into a villain would be much more endearing if the recipient had the chance to get to know him more. Before his dad case, he only appeared in two episodes, which is a bit frustrating. I give applause for the entire visual design of this character. While they could do some explanation for this turquoise strand of hair, it looks wonderful as a whole. It has a bit of steam punk energy, especially in season three. It has its own characteristics that give it a lot of charm. Those rabbit teeth, big blue eyes and upturned nose ... Big compliments. Until it begs to cosplay!
he should have been in season two and he should have been seen more in season 1 before his turn toward villainy. I also like his character design. Never cared for his hair stripe though.
yess his character design is literally so awesome I love it and I love the little details i do wanna say that varian is considered a main character in season 3 though, along with rapunzel, eugene, lance, cass, catalina and kiera- i just googled it and the amber scene was so sad. rapunzel might have been happy to have her mother back but there is literally a betrayed 14 year old watching and his father is literally encased in amber, not to mention varian pretty much has a panic attack right in front of rapunzel and she does nothing about it.. smh
48:17 Fun fact: When i first saw Destinies Collides i wasn't still fan of the show and thought Cassandra *was* protecting Rapunzel from the the moonstone. Reforced by the line: "I'm fulfilling my destiny" as her destiny and purpose is to protect Rapunzel at all cost. (Also the show airs at 7 am here so i wasn't fully awake to understand anything)
That would've been such a better twist! Hell You could even keep Gothel as her mom, thats why Dad is so hard on her, why hes afraid of her getting any power. Going forth with that idea since her mother is Sundrop Flower Simp #1, Cassandra knew some secret about the Moonstone that would make it dangerous for Rapunzel. But she didn't tell anyone because her Dad told her never to tell anyone that Gothel was her mother.
Yo that actually would have been so cool. Imagining Cassandra taking the moonstone and taking off with it, going "full villain" like she did in the series, but not doing anything bad to corona while she's gone, and maybe reducing the black rocks around corona, and lying to the ghost b*tch about it saying something Like "I'm concentrating + reserving the source til their guards are down so I can strike at full force when they least expect it" and have rapunzel be out constantly chasing after her, trying to understand why she's doing that/what happened, and defending cass from being smeared in corona etc, and have their big emotional moment be cass betraying the ghost b*tch and taking her out/destroying the moonstone etc. But no, we got over-dramatic, emotionally stunted stupidity instead 🙄
Okay but the biggest question I have... how did they actually extracted a sunstone from Rapunzel? Like wasn't it said she IS the sundrop? I was so confused when I saw that she had the stone on her dress like.... WHERE? HOW? WHEN... HOOOW?! Since when it was a stone?!
I literally just finished the series last night, and that annoyed me so much. Plus if the sundrop somehow is a stone now, then how come she still can't use the healing incantation?? It just doesn't make sense.
right- like she just put it on one day like? where tf did she even get that, like its not in the movie, not even mentioned in the show when it wouldnt be that hard to just add a simple line about the stone, but suddenly theres a sundrop stone? also wasnt it a drop of sunlight not a piece of the sun that was a stone-
@@martymcchicken8157 It's LITERALLY Sailor Moon all over again...."this crystal is your source of power, it's also literally the manifestation of your soul, but it's not really *you* you"
When I first saw the series I saw as like..it was holding her power like..during that day and that day only- (cause apparently it was never happened once in her life…) the sun drops power was weakened so it was held in this stone But it’s so stupid..how! If she now is the sun drop I feel like she would just be weak! No stone nothing is the moonstone got stronger then it got stronger WHY IS THERE A STONE ON HER CHEST!? IT MAKES NO SENSE 😭! (I’m 10 months late but I needed to say this)
As an avid Varian fan, villain varian is underrated, and they compressed his redemption way too much. The only thing missing from his villain arc is showing us that EVERYONE, not just Rapunzel in his moment of need, turned him away (villagers turning him away, guards positioned near his house, etc)
I think it’s really funny that the plot macguffin is called the moonstone opal because a moonstone is already a type of gem. That’s like if you named your magic gem the “quartz diamond” or if you had a magic sword and you named it “the rapier katana.”
The English dub of dragon ball called Goku's teacher Roshi "Master" Roshi. Roshi just means "master." So in the English dub he is "master master" 😅 Its redundant. I can see where you are coming from with the moon stone opal thing. It's similar.
lady, you are a genius. Everything you said was true, and honestly the favoritism towards Cassandra's character can be really frustrating! a 14 years old gets trown to jail with an adult murderer but she got no consequences for her actions? And how Eugene got sidelines... I would have loved reading your version of the show if you ever decide to write it.
Yeah I agree they could've given Eugene and Lance a lot more to do in the show then just be comic relief side characters and the whole thing about the Dark Kingdom and Eugene being a prince could've been explored more and they didn't have to make Edmond a loser.
i know the show was made for like seven year olds, but the way serious things ESPECIALLY like rapunzel's trauma, eugene's entire character, were done in the show will never fail to upset me
You hear stories about Cartoons taking big risks in their writers room. Pushing for something that they're not quite sure they're going to get the green light for, Like the Legend of Korra finale. They wanted to make one specific couple cannon and they weren't sure if they would be allowed and last minute the studio said "okay". In Infinity train season one they wanted to touch upon the topic of divorce but weren't sure if they could tackle it head on or if they were only allowed to dance around the subject until finally the studio gave them the go ahead to be all in. The reason I bring this up is because I theorize that Tangled the series really tried to do the same, but those risks didn't pay off and the studio just kept giving them 'No's' and holding them back. heavily implying at that Rapunzel has issues brought on by her rough childhood and desire to making everyone happy all the time? Give her a character arc dealing with that? Studio - No, Rapunzel is a major Disney princess. she must be portrayed as a paragon that all little girls want to live up to. She can't have a character arc. That would imply that she has major flaws to work on. At most give her little episodic lessons to learn along the way. As for any big mistakes she makes along the way, I'm sure the audience won't notice. Making a complex message with Cassandra and Rapunzel that sometimes friends split up not because either person has cruel intentions, but because futures can head in different directions and forcing yourselves to stay together isn't helping anyone? Studio - We want a big twist and a huge climactic battle between "Sisters" at the end. also we want a clear villain to point to and say "It's all their fault" I don't have any confirmation on any of this. It's just a theory. I just got that impression that they wanted to make a 'Steven Universe' type show where characters deal with complex issues that's presented in a way kids can understand but the arcs that they were trying to write just kept getting shut down and having to dance around the story that they wanted to tell.
Yeah, when animated shows have writing problems, you shouldn't try to blame the writers tbh it's not like they are allowed to do everything the way they want
I also thought Rapunzel was very mary sue in the show! Eugene really got the shaft in the series...like every opportunity he gets, he gets overshadowed.
What I want to know is why Cassandra got redeemed JUST LIKE THAT. She stole the moonstone for her own benefit because she was JEALOUS of Rapunzel? It's not Rapunzel's fault she got kidnapped, but according to Cassandra, it is. After all, Cassandra put Rapunzel through, she gets redeemed in one episode? Opposed to Varian who got ARRESTED because he was trying to help his father? I'm not saying Varian is perfect but why didn't Cassandra get arrested, why wasn't she thrown in jail? Was it JUST because she was Rapunzel's friend? It makes no sense, you throw a 14-year-old into jail, but let your best friend go even though what she said was arguably WORSE? Ok, Disney makes sense.
And then you have some people saying: Cassandra didn’t have control over herself, the moonstone and Zahn Tiri were controlling her. You’re telling me that in the entirety of season 3 and a bit of 2 she was not making ANY decisions for herself. Think about it, season 2 was leading up to her betrayal, they had frequent arguments with rapunzel then she sang a whole theater production about how she feels rapunzel outshines her and she deserves more than her. She knew exactly what she was doing. Yes, there was some manipulation with Zhan Tiri, like how she threw away the mirror fragment. Ultimately Cassandra blamed rapunzel for something she had no control over while being a grown woman. Varian was 14, Cassandra was an adult, she should have had some common sense and maturity instead she stole something because she was J E A L O U S. Disney did Varian SO dirty. Varian DID have control over himself and he was arguably mature for his age. I do agree with some of the things with Cassandra, she was being Manipulated by the Moonstone (I'm sure I heard it said somewhere) but I do think she did have more control over herself than Disney is making it to believe. Rapunzel and she were still bumping heads the whole season 2 up until her betrayal. 1. Cassandra did feel overshadowed by rapunzel, and I do believe she wanted to be held as equal, but as soon as she sang 'waiting in the wings' it was lost in translation, and for me became a song about jealousy and entitlement. 2. She was missing for a few episodes (like 2 I think, it was the one where they were trapped in the giant shell with all the mirrors and they all turned young,) That was when the manipulation happened with Zahn Tiri, we don't see what happened until season three but it was a flashback to mother Gothel kidnapping Rapunzel, THAT was the main reason for her betrayal along with many other things. She blamed Rapunzel for something she had no control over and that is my problem with Cassandra AND Varian. There are some similarities between Varian and Cassandra, the main one being they both were not thinking straight. Cassandra obviously being manipulated by Zahn Tiri and the moonstone, but Varian it may not be so obvious. I think Varian was manipulated by love, stay with me here, Love makes you do some questionable things, like how Freidrich locked Rapunzel in the tower to protect her against Varian. Varian was losing the one person he had left, and in his teenage brain it was Rapunzel's fault, (yes I’m pulling the hormone card, sorry lol) Varian was 14 at the time and the frontal lobe of his brain, the general area in which decision making is, was not fully developed. (I just looked up how old Cassandra is and according to google she's four, thanks google) Assuming Cassandra is in her early 20's she mostly thinks with her prefrontal cortex, which is fully developed by the time you're an adult. Opposed to Varian who isn't fully developed and is right around the time of puberty. (And we all know how that goes) BY NO MEANS am I saying "yeah lmao go kidnap the queen and threaten everyone" That was dumb of him. Ultimately I do think both characters are similar and should both be held accountable, we are in agreement there. My problem is this, Rapunzel jailed Varian and not Cassandra, both were in similar circumstances (somewhat) but Cassandra had absolutely no punishment and was redeemed in 2 EPISODES?! if she did have a punishment it was off-screen or not very long. I think it's unrealistic and stupid that they jail a 14-year-old and not someone quite older. It ticks me off. If I made any grammatical mistakes or got any information wrong feel free to tell me :)
I don’t think its canon but people have suggested that in S1 Varian is 14 (we know this) and Cassandra is 22. I don’t know how long each season is time-wise I personally go with each season=one year putting Varian and Cassandra at 16 and 24 respectively at the end of the series, though some people think Varian is 18 by the end of the series making Cassandra 26. I have seen official character designs for the cancelled Varian spin-off and that shows that he has grown taller and a little broader since S3 so I generally think that he’s 16 by the end of the series as most men stop growing at about 16-18. Wow. That went on for a while, hope it helped with some thoughts and conclusions you came up with.
Well varying and did lose his mind but we understand why but still no skills but Cassandra I do agree she should have went to jail too and her motives were just dumb not saying motives excuses it now I just did not understand it like why would you just and I agree she should have face consequences
I don't think you need to pull all that hormone thing, Varian was angry because Rapunzel broke her promise to help him and everyone abandoned him and his father (also it WAS fault of the king if the black rocks invaded the village, and for the end of first season he figured out that, saying they were lying to people to hide their mistake), so he didn't care about royal family and Corona's people. And yeah, he was feeling guilty and desperate to pin the blame on someone else to escape his feelings. But, why Cassandra was so angry with Corona that she wanted to destroy, that makes no sense... because she thought to be oh so great and people didn't give her the attention she deserved? Seems literally she tried to cope her abandonment trauma with a ridiculous ambition, she looked just so egocentric...
They did Cassandra so dirty in this show. I would have loved if Cass had told Raps about the whole thing with mother gothel sooner and they used it more as a bonding experience. I totally agree that Cassandra taking it should have been to protect Raps rather than hurt her. She might have left to keep Raps away from the power so she couldnt be hurt. Cassandra could be on her own trying to fight until it breaks free the after seeing Raps again
It's shown that Gothel needed to use the Sun drop's power at least every few days or she starts to drastically age. A non magical pregnancy is difficult enough and it's not always pretty, but imagine what Gothel would have to do to have a healthy birth. The fact that Gothel had a kid at all doesn't seem like something she would do since it wouldn't serve her self interests. Change the story so that Gothel has a descendant that came from a daughter she had and abandoned before she got into magic.
Not to mention I doubt she socialized with many people. She seems like she wouldn’t talk to people unless she needed them for something. Her having a spouse is random to me lol
Honestly, I’d axe Cassandra’s backstory for Eugene’s. At least if Cass was a lost princess of the Dark Kingdom, she’d feel like she actually had a destiny stolen by Rapunzel instead of “boohoo she abused raps not me”
Oh my gosh, literally thank you for reviewing the series. It’s kinda underrated. I’ve been waiting for someone on here to talk about Cassandra. I hated her so much when she betrayed Rapunzel, and that kinda made me *cough* not want to ship them anymore- But if the writing went the way you fixed it, she would literally be one of my favorite characters in a cartoon.
I don’t know if I’m the only one who thinks this but “Let Me Make You Proud” shows how certain Varian is that Rapunzle will help him which makes her turning him down even worse.
Yeah, I honestly stopped watching the series (i didnt realize i'd stopped on the second to last episode) because I just. I was so confused by Cas' motivations and constant back and forth, and it frustrated me to the point where I couldn't finish it so I am SO GLAD THAT YOU VINDICATED MY CONFUSION LMAO i honestly felt like I was going crazy good to see another video!! love your stuff!!
They do mention that the moonstone strongly affects those who hold it, which can explain why Cass seems to change too much in a short amount of time and becomes good right after she loses the moonstone. It also explains why her actions don’t seem to be going anywhere and why she trusts Zhan Tiri too much.
I understand a montage to a song is better, but not every song need one. And in my opinion I don't think the songs in this series needed montages. When cassandra was singing about her jealousy of rapunzel having found her happily ever after and her not, that was already emotional enough. Granted a montage would be a cool thing to add to it, but it didn't need a montage. Again I understand what you mean though, montages do make songs more impactful and pull you in more. But I think this song and all of them still did a good job of doing so.
Varian should've been the one to take the Moondrop Opal, not Cassandra! He 100% would've stolen it to free his Dad after seeing Rapunzel sing the Moon Incantation! That would've been a way better Plotline and Varian could've had an Opportunity to talk to Rapunzel about her being an awful Friend with them on equal footing!
I would have loved to see that in the show If it makes you feel any better, that story idea was done in "On My Honor" on Archive of Our Own (I'm not the author, just recommending a good story to read)
If he did take the moonstone I wouldn’t make him all villain more like just going to free my dad and use to expose Fredrick’s crimes from season 1 and the prison system because it’s shit. I wouldn’t make the arc long it’d be redundant.
@@bloxworld6593I’m a varian fan and most of the varian fans are apologists and would probably prefer another villain varian arc. Most of us end up justifying it anyways-
I know this is old but I want to point this out. I understand Cass in a way as Gothel is very much my own mother. My own mom is very manipulative, I made excuses for her, wanted her to love me because she was my mom. I wanted her to be proud of me but I never could. My younger sister got that spot & I resented her slowly more & more as I grew up. When I moved out I cut contact with my sister but not my mom. It wasn't until I got therapy & realized that my mom was the problem, not my sis, I cut my mom off then reconciled with my sister. My mom still tries to contact me & bring me back in but I won't let her control me anymore. So I get it, I get why the betrayal seemed out of nowhere.
Thank you for telling your story. Breaking up contact with a relative is not an easy thing to do, and definitely not something a lot of people will understand. I have been there myself, which is one reason why I can relate to Cass so much. I wish you all the power you need to continuing keeping the people who harm you out of your life.
Varian could have been like Vigor's reincarnation. Maybe after Vigor died he got reincarnated into Varian with little to no memory of his past life. But he has small bits and passing memory of having done this all before, thats why Varian is so fascinated by science. Why he wants to know more of Vigor's work, he had done the work before and he feels drawn to it for some unknown reason. Id pay money for that to be the case.
38:00 Considering how many men Gothel raves about ogling her, I think Cass is the result of a one-night stand and Gothel kept her to do all the housework.
I also think the show ruined Rapunzel! She’s just kind of selfish and never really learns her lesson at all. I know she was kept in a tower her entire life, but Rapunzel in the movie definitely cared about everyone around her. This Rapunzel only cares about what’s doing best for her. Even when she hurts other people or makes mistakes, it’s like “oh well” because she’s the princess! That’s why I like Cassandra. She reminded Rapunzel that she just can’t be so positive all the time, or that she has to respect other people’s feelings. The only issue with Cassandra and Rapunzel’s relationship was that they were polar opposites, so they never saw eye to eye.
Fully agree on the thing about Cass’ behavior and actions. Her blaming Rapunzel because Gothel “chose her” over her when Raps was a literal infant and was mistreated and isolated her entire life while Cass was raised by a loving father presumably on the castle grounds is straight up victim blaming. Not to mention Cass constantly gaslit, verbally put down, and weaponized Rapunzel’s trauma (i.e. her threatening Eugene when she knows Raps has trauma over Euegene dying) A lot of people like to say “but zhan tiri manipulated her!” Listen, a grown woman should not be this easily manipulated by a ghost child she just met. Cass is usually the skeptical, distrusting one, and then she trusts ZT no problem? Also the fact she literally kidnapped Varian and proceeded to drug him while unconscious, then hold him hostage. This grown woman kidnapped and drugged a literal child and the worst thing is Varian acts more reasonable and mature than Cassandra ever did during Nothing Left To Lose. Lastly, Rapunzel extended multiple olive branches, politely asking if not begging for Cass to stop and work things out, all of which Cass rejected every single time without fail. The point where she does start to have doubts, where she realize she’s part of a bigger scheme, it’s far too late for a deserving redemption after denying it for so long. The second the words “you want me to be the bad guy? Fine, I’m the bad guy.” Quoting her mother, the person who tormented Rapunzel all those years, the villain of the original movie, threw any chance of a decent redemption out the window. Cassandra is Rapunzel’s best friend, she knows the trauma she endured from Gothel yet shoves all that aside and traumatizes Raps even further all because Rapunzel was too naive or condescending for her taste a couple times. That’s my final thoughts, but don’t even get me started on Varian’s mistreatment both in the show itself and in the production of the show (there’s a basically confirmed rumor that Varian did have a bigger role in season 2 but the creator of the show was so mad Varian was “too popular” that they axed the story he had in season 2 entirely and replaced whatever good character/story development we could’ve had for Varian for useless filler and had to scramble to speedrun a redemption for Varian in the season 3 premiere)
It never would have happened if Rapunzel was always trying to play victim for every bad situation instead of owning up to what she did, and tried to make Cass look like the bad guy after not listening to her warnings or even being more considerate, showing she doesn't know Cass like she thinks she does, otherwise she would not have acted all condescending every time.
@@Disneyfan82 Yeah, Rapunzel was NOT a good friend and never apologized to Cass for any of her misdeeds. For God's sake, she literally kicked Cass into mud in the Contest of the 7 kingdoms and doesn't even say "I'm sorry" to Cass.
I humbly disagree on nothing left to lose and crossing the line, as they are my favorite in the show and I think they work well. I love that crossing the line turns triumphant after the initial confrontation because the whole point of cass is that she doesn’t believe herself to be the villain. So in her mind, crossing the line isn’t her villainous turn but her go the distance moment so I really like it, but I get the problems you have. All your critiques make sense but I enjoy all those quirks
One thing that never sat right with me about Eugene's character in the series is that they either completely ignore the fact that he literally died for Rapunzel or they play it off as a joke. In the two separate episodes where they return to the tower they joke about it. The first time Eugene ends up staying outside and says "I have a rule about dying in the same place twice" then in the second episode Eugene is in the tower giving Max a tour (completely ignoring the impossibility that is a whole freaking horse even existing in that tinny tower) and he said "oh watch out that's where I died. And there's one point in season one "Painters Block" where Rapunzel is distressed after having to make so many tough decisions in a short period of time and is acting not like herself and Eugene tries to comfort her and she says "tell you what, Eugene the day you have to choose whether to put the entire fate of a kingdom in the hands of a fairytale is the day we can chat about difficult choices" THE MAN LITERALLY CHOSE TO DIE RATHER THAN LET THE LOVE OF HIS LIFE BE HELD CAPTIVE BY A MANIPULATIVE AND ABUSIVE WOMAN!!!!! But yeah sure Eugene totally doesn't know that it's like to make tough choices They act as if his death was as simple as him breaking a leg or deciding to not comb his hair for a single day. They do my man dirty they really do.
And just imagine the roles were switched, imagine a guy would let his best friend constantly insult his girlfriend, keep secrets from her, draw her face on a punching bag just for his best friend and even reject her marriage proposal, then everyone would call it sexist and misogynistic and a toxic relationship. But when a guy is treated like that, it’s alright! It’s such a double standard and it’s ridiculous! Ugh, I hate modern feminism!
Ok, so Pascal and Eugene are both Rapunzel's best friends. And pascal has had near death experiences TWICE. And Rapunzel cried in lot. But that one time when Eugene was fighting with Edmund and that Gondolla or whatever it's called fell down, she just sulked, got up and said "This is not how our story ends." Like that sounds a little weird to me.
17:24 oh boy, THAT scene.. I'm surprised you didn't brought up the "fan art" that scene inspired with the heavy blushing among certain sites. Granted the art style was already liked by some artists but THAT scene might as well been fan service to those people.
Crossing the line's tone was similar in execution with let it go. It isn't "oh happy birthday lol" but the character intentionally getting energetic to 'let go' of something that she thinks was holding her back. That's being consistent with the character's motivation. Both Cass and Elsa are trying to forget or ignore the bad stuff going on. It's a false happy tone.
you calling raps a mary sue really does fit lol, i was so bothered the ENTIRE time how perfect she kinda was in the show. i mean, she spent 18 years isolated in a tower with the only person she knew being a manipulative horrible mother figure. she should not be that well adjusted!! or any of that!! i get its a disney show and they would not have gone there but oh my gosh the complete lack of taking into account even basic psychology knowledge just.....oh my gosh it hurt and yea pointing out the flaws in cass' whole thing at the last season really does shove it down like a jenga tower. i completely ignored how ridiculous it was cause honestly? i related to her. it was totally the waiting in the wings song that captured me lol
I loved Varian's character arc. He was a kid who loves science, but made a mistake that ended in his dad getting into a dangerous situation. When he goes to his friend who he trusts, she turns him away. He needed help, and was confused, and he's a kid, and he was mad. He acted out, and was actually very powerful. He payed for his mistakes, and Rapunzel had no punishment for making his friend turn out that way. He comes back in season three, and he feels guilty that he hurt people, and was scared that people won't forgive him, so again, being a child who doesn't know better, tries to erase his mistakes and make people forget, but he realizes that's wrong and tries to fix it again. Then Raps have him a job which no where near shows the intelligence he has. He accepts that, and tries to help as much as he can while having fun. And then cas kidnapped and drugged him and tried to get information. He tells her (through a really boring song that doesn't go with what's on screen) that he went through the same thing, and that it's stupid and if she apologizes, then it's not too late to redeem herself. I think this gave him the build up to be a really powerful hero, but they just stick him in another dimension, and break all of his inventions.
I think Eugene could’ve been the glue and the protector of the sun and moon stone. That way, he wouldn’t have magic, but he would be more physical with equal power to the stones. Therefore the stones wouldn’t be crowded and Eugene will still have a purpose.
What bothers me is that people who worked on this show admitted to coding cassandra as a lesbian and wanting to show that with her interactions with rapunzel, but then it just started getting weird when they made their relationship more of a sisterhood. It's just this weird back and forth between sisters and implied unrequited crush that honestly gets kind of uncomfortable.
@@hezureviews I have something interesting that you can do a sequel video on to this video which is the book what once was mine which is about to Rapunzel's mother drinking the Moon flower giving Rapunzel destructive powers and if this book ends up being reaited to the series and also the series is very interesting to begin with the this book is in which is the twisted tale series which is basically what if something happened differently in a Disney movie in each book in the series if you want you can check it out
It made me so upset that they let Cass completely off the hook after what she did, and yet they imprisoned Varian and I'm pretty sure they were going to keep him there for life until his redemption. They were going to imprison a child for life (after they said they couldn't put children in the dungeon to Red and Angry) yet Cass, a full adult person who did worse than Varian, got off scott free
That always bothered me too it makes no sense just because she is friends with Rapanzel and works at the castle doesn’t mean she should get out the hook. She let an ancient evil that destroyed everything and killed people, she tried to kill Rapanzel multiple times I believe and she kidnapped a kid who she was friends with. She threatened the entire kingdom and had little reason to do so they should have locked her up for a while. It enraged me that she didn’t get any form of repercussions and as you said you left scoot free because of the royals biases. It teaches kids that acts don’t have consequences when you know people in power.
I haven’t seen the video yet or the show but I was told Eugene is a prince and I just went. Wtf- Him being a regular dude (in the movie) is what made it good. Idk how it’s handled in the show at all tho so maybe I’m wrong
Rapunzel in the very next episode says: "I had everything under control and had she stayed out of it..."
P.S. She doesn't apologize to Cass in the episode, Cass just says "I'll get over it" as if that fixes everything(pretty sure Cassandra knew Rapunzel wouldn't own up)
Or just replace her with an Original Character, Like a Forth Acolyte of Zhan Tiri.
Absolutely
I always laugh my ass off when Rapunzel sings “Cassandra listen-“ and Cass interrupts with D8< “I’M LISTENING!!!” Like she’s so pissed she interrupted her in song.

@@lunasspace2694 wait seriously?
The word “listen” aggravates Cassandra because she doesn’t like being told what to do. If she Rapunzel hadn’t used “wait” and “listen” maybe Cassandra would have stopped.
I MADE IT 999 LIKES
Actually cass did not Interrupt Rapunzel. She's saying " Cassandra Listen.""I'm listening" as if Rapunzel will tell cass something
Bruh
I agree!!
You guys really need to read the book Mother Knows Best Cassandra is not a gothel's daughter because she never lived in the cottage to begin with she is having to get these fake memories which some of the memories might have been Rapunzel memories from when she lived in the cottage until she got her memories changed to think she was living in the tower for her whole life
@@davidalicea6705 You do realize that book is not canon to the movie or the TV show, right? It's more like an official fanfiction.
i hate when media makes it sound like adoptive parents are inherently inferior to biological parents.
Hmm,works for me
Too bad Chris didn't care
If I recall correctly, Eugene specifically says that Cass could do something Rapunzel didn’t like to protect her. The stage was set well enough for your idea.
What could’ve worked (but sadly Chris chose not to do) would be that that was her original intention WAS that, but after taking the stone, it made her remember Gothel and THEN Cass becomes corrupted.
@sofialozano4031 that's actually a better plot and makes a lot of sense
If you pay close attention to Varian’s vocals in Ready as I’ll Ever Be you will notice that his voice occasionally waivers. On “I’m the bad guy, that’s *fine*” his voice goes a little teary on “fine”, also “and there’s only one answer *for me*” again another teary waiver. He is just a kid, at the time he’s processing grief with NO ONE CARING and then gets thrown in jail. God I’m sorry for him, I wish I could help but haha it’s fictional so I HAVE TO LIVE WITH THE SAD
The only one who actually tried to talk to him was the queen in that same song gosh damn all he needed was a visit and hug from rapunzel
Fr.
Yeah, Jeremy Jordan does this SO WELL!
When canon fails, fanfiction is the next best thing.
Yeah but now Disney hiring people to make fanfiction in The twisted tail series we shall really what if scenarios on Disney movies but what makes this very interesting is tangle books description watch once was mine which this book literally describes Rapunzel having destructive powers that comes from the Moon her parents giving her to mother gothel and the new original character with Flynn so first of all did the writer of this book need to see if he's in the side to do this based off of the series or is it just a coincidence that this just has to have Moon Palace in the book the world this book be connected to the series or not
Indeed
There's one fanfic (on Archive of Our Own) called "darkness exists to make light truly count" which is a really good read. It's basically an AU where Varian and Rapunzel grew up alongside each other in the same tower.
To be clear, I'm not the author of the story, just recommending a good story to read
Eugene after being forced into a hostile and unsafe lifestyle with no parents or home for 25 years:
Rapunzel after being raised by a neglectful and emotionally abusive captor for 18 years:
Cassandra after being raised in a loving and stable home by an adoptive father:MY LIFE IS SOOOOOO HAAAAAARD!
This comment is way too intelligent for this show. And soooo right.
Man! I've never thought of it that way.
It s genius x)
well that's about past, but both eugene and rapunzel got their very lucky moments to shine (rapunzel turned out to be a princess and eugene found her AND turned out to be a prince) which they to be honest didn't really work for..
@@АлисаБугрова-ш1н I honestly think that, if that's what the writers wanted us to understand then they should have pushed the line even harder... because we don't get to see much of her effort that often... like it's there for 2 or 3 épisodes but the rest of the show she's just seen as badass, not "underrated" (ok that because rapunzel can't be seen as a bad person but still my point is still valid)
Plus I don't like the morality behind her arc.
Like a said previously she chose to stay x)
I know it really sound like the boring "american dream" but it's not, at least I don't think of it that way (because I'm french btw if you missed my mistakes xS)

Rant about Varian:
Varian’s a kid.

Same
They should have gave her better motives
I really wish they had actually spent time building her a character instead of a ton of crappy filler episodes no one wanted
I would've loved it if she were Edmund's child instead of Eugene. In "Waiting in the Wings," she sees a phantom rider who looks like her. I thought it was all set up for her to gain her freedom in the Dark Kingdom.
what😊
In "Crossing the line" the tonal dissonance is the point.
I still enjoy the song and understand what they were going for, but I feel that adding a bit more of a darker or corrupted tone could've helped Cass feel more like she was becoming a villain that thinks she's in the right
Agreed
Don't bother, this woman is dumb as bricks.
Omg, Varian's hair stripe.
I still remember how the writers were all "Every detail MEANS something." So OF COURSE we went crazy on theories. And one day, and I am NOT KIDDING, the director of the show, legit told us "we used it because it was cool and lighted up this character"
I... I'll never be over it lmaooo, we even though it was to missdirect us but NOPE 😭
Like, if it was in a modern world, okay. In a fantasy world? Where hair colour is VERY important??? And in the color blue?? No 😭
Yeah, in a show were unusually colored hair was a sign of magic, that explanation was bull.
and LITERALLY he had it as a kid too?????? like that’s so weird just to be nothing important. the theories were way cooler than it turned out to be
I thought it was a mad scientist trope, like dr.frankenstein
@@kyra7152 my headcannon is that Varian is the true last descendant of the Dark Kingdom’s royal family. Hence the hair stripe
They really slept on Eugene and I hate it
Yeah it’s pretty much why I didn’t watch this series.
Honestly, Cass betraying Rapunzel and seizing the moonstone didn't feel out of character to me after going through two seasons of Rapunzel constantly undermining her boundaries and taking her opportunities. It was her motivations afterwards that didn't make sense.
Basically, while the Gothel thing worked as a tipping point for Cass, it shouldn't have been her motivation in season 3.
I actually disliked Rapunzel's behavior at times. It came across as selfish, arrogant and at times reckless.
@@thunderbird1921 Honestly, same. If my friend were that pushy I'd drop them.
@@CJ-zy4io How about when she nearly got Eugene arrested (and possibly herself) when they visited a kingdom that he was still wanted for crimes in?
Yup, and Rapunzel was a terrible friend to Cass, whether she meant to or not
They're not justifications, but they're EXPLANATIONS.
Frozen 2 especially made absolutely no logical sense at times.

Afaik the issue with Cass was that they swapped out her motivation for betrayal with season 3, her whole issue before then was being stuck as a sidekick who has her entire life decided by other people like almost getting sent to a nunnery at the end of season 1. She even got a song about it with Waiting in the Wings and got an entire season of conflict with Rapunzel ignoring her suggestions once Adira showed up and increasing amount of super powers making her job as a bodyguard completely for show.
yeah cass felt like she was waiting in the wings

I remembered talking to a friend about it at the time (I’m no longer friends with her because she was toxic), but she tried to claim that it made sense because “Gothel loved Rapunzel more than Cassandra.”
But Gothel didn’t love Rapunzel more than Cassandra.

I KNOW TF
YES, I live in a country with a lot of iguanas and they are just so different between each other
Hes a frog. Duh
@@vuivraalbastra Eh, to be fair Zhan Tiri was completely powerless, and it was only through dumb luck that she happened across Varien's chemicals when Cass wasn't looking.
I haven’t seen that movie but from the clips I’ve seen of it, it’s great!
Your Obedient Servant is another good example of two former friends fighting in song
I like this theory. This could have been so cool plot wise
AW MANNNN I WOULDA LOVED TO SEEN THIS
i swear i sighed so heavy after reading the first few sentences, this was a great read,,,,I NEEEEED THIS
I agree, Eugene was just there as a comedian in the whole series and because of his less screen time,we never got to notice his personality development.
At least all the stuff that was unexplored makes really good fanfic fodder, and Disney can’t tell us it’s not canon anymore!
@@mariechen4375 Damn, I mean, I agree that it is stupid that Rapunzel wouldn't marry Eugene, ig she just didn't want any committed. Many things would have made sense if the show was set after the wedding short because we don't see Eugene's father or his friends or Cassandra. Also, it's not like Eugene is the kind of husband who wouldn't allow his wife to go out for an adventure.
Cross the line isn't a song about betrayal, it's Cassandra's victory song
it should still feel more like a villain song then
I’ve never watched much of the series, but the song also felt like an evil version of Let It Go to me, pretty ironic since Let It Go was meant to be a Villain Song

@@IcyDiamond I think the similarities to Let It Go could be intentional. Like "what if she was the villain after all"
@@remnants9974 I read another comment that said Wicked and Frozen were there main inspirations while making this show, so that theory is totally possible
Thanks for saying this.
OH MY GOSH! I'M NOT THE ONLY ONE WHO NOTICED CASSANDRA GOT AWAY SCOT FREE! That one scene ruined the WHOLE SHOW! Thank you!
It makes sense that she'd become angry if others don't follow what she says, she's worried that if she's not in control then they'll control her like mother gothel.
Cass has no excuse for any of her behaviors, she has no long lasting childhood trauma to my knowledge. She was not raised in an abusive home, her mother abandoned her, but she did not go through any sustained long term abuse.
THIS!! ALL OF THIS. Frankly I really didn’t like Cass after her betrayal at all. Her motivations for doing so just made me dislike even more.

That doesn´t stop the shippers, that´s for sure.. XD
Ehh not really. Cass, if anything, treated Rapunzel as a little sister. I feel like people just be reaching with this ship. Aye but that’s pretty much most shippers. They desperately find the tiniest things to justify their ship 😂
@@angelaharris9714 Little things? I do not think so. Cassandra has the type of character that is often given to lesbian in animated series. Her various gestures and glances indicate that she likes Rapunzel. Maybe it is not love above life, but temporary infatuation, but these are also not "little things"
@@Idkidc2173 it seems more like sisterly love to me. They literally refer to themselves as sisters. 😂 But whatever people going to see only what they want to see. Honestly I think almost all of the songs are amazing it's just that a lot don't fit the scenes like if they were put in a different part of the story they would slap like you said with let me make you proud
I love the songs but yeah like they do not fit the vibe for their scenes
Same
I listened to some of the songs before watching the show, and I thought make you proud was going to come way earlier.

Sorry for my bad English.

Never cared for his hair stripe though.
yess his character design is literally so awesome I love it and I love the little details
i do wanna say that varian is considered a main character in season 3 though, along with rapunzel, eugene, lance, cass, catalina and kiera- i just googled it
and the amber scene was so sad. rapunzel might have been happy to have her mother back but there is literally a betrayed 14 year old watching and his father is literally encased in amber, not to mention varian pretty much has a panic attack right in front of rapunzel and she does nothing about it..

I don't even watch the tv show but yet I agree with this.
This is my magic artifact, a cup that grants whoever drinks from it eternal youth. I call it “the goblet chalice.”
The English dub of dragon ball called Goku's teacher Roshi "Master" Roshi. Roshi just means "master." So in the English dub he is "master master" 😅 Its redundant. I can see where you are coming from with the moon stone opal thing. It's similar.
Rapier Katana sounds like a good name for an over-the-top assassin in a comedy cartoon.

Crossing the Line and Nothing to Lose are legit bangers, how dare you.
Amen!🙏

Right, like some of this critique completely misses the intent of the songs purpose. Like cmonnnnn
Bro. My exact thought!
I agree, some of the stuff she says misses the point of the songs. Maybe she should listen to the lyrics next time
I love both “nothing left to loose” and “ready as I’ll ever be” I love Varian’s voice. He sings amazingly.
i know right.!?
i know the show was made for like seven year olds, but the way serious things ESPECIALLY like rapunzel's trauma, eugene's entire character, were done in the show will never fail to upset me
You hear stories about Cartoons taking big risks in their writers room.
Studio - We want a big twist and a huge climactic battle between "Sisters" at the end. also we want a clear villain to point to and say "It's all their fault"
I don't have any confirmation on any of this. It's just a theory. I just got that impression that they wanted to make a 'Steven Universe' type show where characters deal with complex issues that's presented in a way kids can understand but the arcs that they were trying to write just kept getting shut down and having to dance around the story that they wanted to tell.
Yeah, when animated shows have writing problems, you shouldn't try to blame the writers tbh it's not like they are allowed to do everything the way they want
this is disney we're talking about so that was always my impression. the studio kept telling them no at taking any risks.
There are some similarities between Varian and Cassandra,
the main one being they both were not thinking straight.
Cassandra obviously being manipulated by Zahn Tiri and the moonstone, but Varian it may not be so obvious.
I think Varian was manipulated by love, stay with me here,
Love makes you do some questionable things, like how Freidrich locked Rapunzel in the tower to protect her against Varian.
Varian was losing the one person he had left, and in his teenage brain it was Rapunzel's fault, (yes I’m pulling the hormone card, sorry lol)
Varian was 14 at the time and the frontal lobe of his brain, the general area in which decision making is, was not fully developed.
(And we all know how that goes)
BY NO MEANS am I saying "yeah lmao go kidnap the queen and threaten everyone"
That was dumb of him.
Ultimately I do think both characters are similar and should both be held accountable, we are in agreement there.
My problem is this,
Rapunzel jailed Varian and not Cassandra,
both were in similar circumstances (somewhat) but Cassandra had absolutely no punishment and was redeemed in 2 EPISODES?! if she did have a punishment it was off-screen or not very long.
I think it's unrealistic and stupid that they jail a 14-year-old and not someone quite older. It ticks me off.
If I made any grammatical mistakes or got any information wrong feel free to tell me :)
Because the writers made Varian a plot device.
@@Potatoesop Thank you it did :)
I LITERALLY LOVE NOTHING LEFT TO LOSE WITH A BURNING PASSION
Evil Eugene would’ve inspired so many awesome fan art
"Goddammit, it's Terra from Teen Titans all over again."
I don’t know if I’m the only one who thinks this but “Let Me Make You Proud” shows how certain Varian is that Rapunzle will help him which makes her turning him down even worse.
Eugene turned from chad into jake / wolf boy / prince of the dark wolf kingdom
Yeah, I honestly stopped watching the series (i didnt realize i'd stopped on the second to last episode) because I just. I was so confused by Cas' motivations and constant back and forth, and it frustrated me to the point where I couldn't finish it so I am SO GLAD THAT YOU VINDICATED MY CONFUSION LMAO i honestly felt like I was going crazy
good to see another video!! love your stuff!!
I would have loved to see that in the show
If it makes you feel any better, that story idea was done in "On My Honor" on Archive of Our Own (I'm not the author, just recommending a good story to read)
If he did take the moonstone I wouldn’t make him all villain more like just going to free my dad and use to expose Fredrick’s crimes from season 1 and the prison system because it’s shit. I wouldn’t make the arc long it’d be redundant.
Honestly, that's a cool concept except for the fact that he had already been redeemed. It would've disappointed a lot of Varian fans.
How did gothel manage to carry Cassandra to term? The second she started aging she should have had a miscarriage. 😦
@@Passions5555
Maybe the flower healed the miscarriage? I mean, it's a magical, healing flower so why not?
Moonstone varian AU...
Welp, You've earned a sub. Those are truly some wild AU ideas.
The moonstone Varian AU was so widespread, everyone wanted it... so much fanart
One of Lance’s songs is my comfort song.
Bigger than That.
It’s so comforting to me.
Dude what are you talking about!?
@@azureaquarius4487 dude selfish staying to take care of her whole kingdom IN A BLIZZARD IS THE OPPOSITE OF SELFISH!

Tangle the series... It was absolutely amazing but... It could be better and lasted longer.
Varian being shafted makes me so mad. The creator is such a piss baby for that
It never would have happened if Rapunzel was always trying to play victim for every bad situation instead of owning up to what she did, and tried to make Cass look like the bad guy after not listening to her warnings or even being more considerate, showing she doesn't know Cass like she thinks she does, otherwise she would not have acted all condescending every time.
@@DragonGoddess18 I agree they really made rapunzel a spoiled brat in this series
@@ok.4720 Yes. Yes,she is.
I agree. Crossing the Line was definitely a victory song. The songs tend to reflect what the characters are feeling, not the circumstances they’re in.
And there's one point in season one "Painters Block" where Rapunzel is distressed after having to make so many tough decisions in a short period of time and is acting not like herself and Eugene tries to comfort her and she says "tell you what, Eugene the day you have to choose whether to put the entire fate of a kingdom in the hands of a fairytale is the day we can chat about difficult choices"
THE MAN LITERALLY CHOSE TO DIE RATHER THAN LET THE LOVE OF HIS LIFE BE HELD CAPTIVE BY A MANIPULATIVE AND ABUSIVE WOMAN!!!!! But yeah sure Eugene totally doesn't know that it's like to make tough choices
They act as if his death was as simple as him breaking a leg or deciding to not comb his hair for a single day.
They do my man dirty they really do.
Ok, so Pascal and Eugene are both Rapunzel's best friends. And pascal has had near death experiences TWICE. And Rapunzel cried in lot. But that one time when Eugene was fighting with Edmund and that Gondolla or whatever it's called
fell down, she just sulked, got up and said "This is not how our story ends." Like that sounds a little weird to me.
I kind of think the reason was she has such a close relationship with Eugene her brain wouldn’t even process him dying unless she saw definite proof.
It's a false happy tone.
you calling raps a mary sue really does fit lol, i was so bothered the ENTIRE time how perfect she kinda was in the show. i mean, she spent 18 years isolated in a tower with the only person she knew being a manipulative horrible mother figure. she should not be that well adjusted!! or any of that!! i get its a disney show and they would not have gone there but oh my gosh the complete lack of taking into account even basic psychology knowledge just.....oh my gosh it hurt
and yea pointing out the flaws in cass' whole thing at the last season really does shove it down like a jenga tower. i completely ignored how ridiculous it was cause honestly? i related to her. it was totally the waiting in the wings song that captured me lol
Your 'How do we fix it?' section reminds me of the Steven Universe episode when Peridot was on the moon base: "It could have been great"

It teaches kids that acts don’t have consequences when you know people in power.
its basically a classic case of nepotism
