Yes it was sang alongside The Star-spangled in ww2.
It was originally in 2/4 so it's a march. It was composed for the independence from Spain. Not sure about the lyrics but probably in spanish like everything else at that time. Now it's in 4/4 which is not as hyped up like 2/4 time signature. But what can we do, eh?

The French anthem has the most fiery lyrics, though! (Although the US anthem is pretty warlike as well, but not as good).
