  • This week's Ask Charlie is a bit of a different one and something that I have never done before. Sigh said, "Good luck, darling, because I think you're going to make a hash of it" which didn't fill me with much confidence, but I'm rather pleased with how it all turned out and am happy to report he has since eaten his words!
I can't tell you how excited I am to have a dressing table in the bedroom that I bought myself and painted myself. I'm so satisfied that I've done it and made a change.
I put up with my last dressing table, which was beautiful but just not practical, for 14 years. Never in our married life did I have a dressing table I could sit at!
This is going to be such a pleasure to use. It cost 40 pounds with the mirror and stool. The cost of the paint was about £20 and the fabric I already had and my friend is reupholstering. So all in all, it's come in way under 100 pounds and I'm thrilled.
My son Arch even turned around and said, "Mum, I didn't realize you were so good at DIY!" I haven't told him I did design and technology as an A-Level!
I thought I would show you how I tackled the upcycling project!

How inspiring, thank you. I am in the same boat. A neoclassical style dressing table, but I cannot sit and do my make up which sort of defeats the object. I will probably never be brave enough to get rid of it, because it's part of my bedroom set, but it need a fresh coat of paint... I had bought a mini sander to sand it down as well as other pieces, but perhaps the scouring side of the sponge might be more gentle... I did not know that. What serendipity again...

@@ask.charlie I am actually scared. I will start with the nightstands. Definitely in a great need of fresh paint. Mine were originally cream, but I am interesting in turning them into a pearly white with a tiny hint of silver and new handles. I have been staring at the sander and the samples of paint afraid to start. That's why I was so grateful to find your video.

I am a huge fan of up cycling. You did a fab transformation. I always use Frenchic chalk paint. It's super quick and easy as the wax is already built in. You may like to have a look on the Frenchic fan forum on fb❤️

It was two days in total from start to finish just letting the paint dry in between coats so it was a day work in total if that makes sense, it was much easier than I thought! Frenchi paints are the best to use!
