I'm not a Gibson guy, so I didn't even know this was how Gibson does neck binding. Personally, I like the look of frets over top the binding.
You should do that then
Hi, I enjoyed your video! I recently made a neck for a 1951 Gibson and that was why I wanted to do that. For authenticity. I was skeptical about all the stories about chisels and hot knives from so-called reliable sources. So, I went on a Gibson-video watching spree. They only want you to see simple things like sanding and stuff. They are secretive about their techniques, so I try to look at everything in the video except what they are trying to show you. So, across the room, there it was!!! I saw that they also used a pattern follower bit like you have used. So you got it right. They have the router mounted horizontal on an arm that floats it on top of the fingerboard which is also kept horizontal. So I did it that way. I used a really tiny bearing. The diameter of the bearing controls how tight the work is. My bit was 1/4" or less. And it was really close to finished afterwards. It was a nail-biter because the router bit is so close to the frets and it seems like it will hit a fret and damage the $30 bit. But it worked fine. The frets are no match for a carbide bit, so I dont think the bit will get damaged. But there were a couple of frets with a tiny scratch that needed to be sanded out. I adjusted the bit depth so that only enough blade is showing to get the binding. And I needed to angle the router a teeny bit to account for the radius. I actually hand-held the router, which was tense! I think I clamped the work to the edge of the table saw for stability.
Great video! Keep up the good work!
Sounds like you made it happen thanks for sharing your story my friend
I'm not entirely sure why I watched this because I think binding nibs are more trouble than they're worth in my own opinion. However, you've done it gracefully and made it make sense for those that wish to do so! Plus I just enjoy your vids in general lol Thanks again Matt!
Thanks for watching even if you think you will never do it... It is a technique that some people ask for
Great lesson, thank you!
Don't forget to leave plenty of tooling marks!
That is the Gibson way
Thanks for the encouragement man! I gotta admit, I’ve shied away from this just because it looks like a LOT of work (and I have zero experience). Most of the significant work I have confidence doing, I first tried on an inexpensive guitar. There aren’t many inexpensive Les Pauls in my world. 😬
Nice!
Another method that I use…
Trim majority of it with end nippers & frets puller, then scrape with razor blades.
Crowning files (toothed) can be helpful too for getting really clean around the frets.
Lots of ways to do it, that's for sure
Thanks Matt. Not my favorite style fret ends but interesting to see how it's done.
Thanks for watching. This is one of those controversial techniques for sure
I'll offer you another technique that I bet will win.
Clamp a strong board against the binding then trim the binding away with a long sharp paring chisel from the other side.
Neat fast tidy.
I'm having trouble visualizing this.
Please make a video
Cause it looks cool is ALWAYS a good answer for me! (5:20 BTW that is a distractingly good looking man in the background!)
Great demo on 'how to do it' but I'm not convinced on 'why to do it' ... I get that everybody has different style choices but binding nubs seem cruel to whoever has to re-fret in the future ...
This. Now mind you, while I fully agree Gibsons are top notch, that doesn't keep me from also being in the _"Holy crap, a $2500 instrument with a $3500 paint job for $6000? Aw, _hell_ naw"_ club.
Sweet Matt! My Hamer Studio Custom has binding over the frets. Love my Hamers as I know you do too😀
You know I love the Haner Studio
A good TT Sunday to all👋🏻
Bound Neck with Nibs 🤘
I love them too
You still don't adress the issue of how it's supposed to be refretted in the future. How are you supposed to get those frets out without damaging the binding? And how are you supposed to get every fret to fit perfectly between those bindings?
It may look cool but it's adding a lot more cost to routine maintenance for the owner.
not bitching about it, just wish gibson would offer the option of not having to get the nibs...i hate those fing things.
I think you should also contact Gibson
I like how it looks and never had any issues playing. Could lose them to refret someday but doubtfully going to be my problem. Lol
I think the frets and nubs will outlive me. At least be too old to notice I need a fret job. Lol
Again I think issues are exaggerated and never noticed a problem. To catch a nub my e-strings be bending the other way. Maybe a big ass vibrato touches it. What the hell are you people doing with the string over there? You goofy bastards. Lmao
Shit there is another weird ass playing style I have yet to learn… does anyone know if lessons available on vhs for this?
Jokes but my own truth. Don’t play much there at all ever.
With magnifying glasses it’s a long ways away but I do see a crack I could get a pube in. Lmao
Like Billy gibbons high e string. Wonder if nubs bug him? Lolol
I can see re doing it for a special collectible gibson. But really, its stupid. A properly fretted neck doesn't spew fret barbs.
Seems like your StewMac link is broken. 6/7/23 7:30 pm Cali time. Using Chrome browser windows 10. Says, "Your connection is not private." and won't take me to the page. Like every relationship I've ever had, it could be me. Just thought you might want to know. Amazon link works just fine.
we love the nibs!!!!!!
Never would've occurred to me to trim that with a flush-trim bit!
I try to give y'all some new ideas
Happy meal for you 😆🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
If you can see more of your work, you will have a better opportunity to do BETTER work. Since I got myself the Opt-Visor, ALL of my work has improved, including soldering. I used to think that I wasn't very skilled, but it turns out I was just blind.
You got that right
I am 52, so yea; i know your vision struggle. I bought something similiar for my close guitar work.
Got to be able to see right
Another great video Matt, keep them coming.
Thanks Doug
The only thing worse in Guitarland than fret nibs is relicing.
Sounds good
I've had all three of my Gibsons refretted to get rid of this stupid idea and put the frets over the top of the binding, where they should be.
I think I have a irrational concern about the string getting caught between the end of the frets and the binding...😯
I suppose that could happen.
Was I bitching about neck binding? I thought I was bitching about my wife’s cooking.
I can't help you there brother
you'd think there'd be a plek that cuts perfect binding.
You'd think
to be fair I cant see 💩 anymore either😫
0perssnly I won't own a Gibson over priced to much hype there heavy enough to fuck up your rotator cup in shoulder so then the doc say you can't 0ksy Gibson any more I wondefuf any one has sues them for mussedong or not telling the the consumer that they are heavy unaiyhgh cto. Cause dMag over time maybe they should put swarming label in them 😊😅😅😅😊
Cheers 🍻
I lost all fear of personalizing my sg SUPREME to my vision when I decided to sand off the green black fade and expose the flames maple top underneath.
I had to man.
I hate green and I hate painted necks and you couldn't even see the chatoyance underneath.
Yeah Gibson finishes are thick as a quarter and kill tone like a SONOFABITCH.
Looking back I contemplated it for months and my FAKEBOOK friends all telling me no don't.
In the end the lacquered natural was the way to go and I tung oiled the neck after I'd RESCULPTED to my feel. ALOT thinner !
I left it open pore of course.
I took a razor blade and stripped all the piss yellow lacquer and gave the binding a well worn and rolled feel.
I learned not to use an electric sander to remove the headstock lacquer because the binding started to melt ha ha.
I masked off the split diamond inlay and sprayed the overlay with a small can of BRILLIANT BLACK PEARL from O'Reilly's.
Then immediately lacquered it as soon as it flashed. It looks factory af.
Unfortunately the lacquer checks around the headstock inlay came back in time ha ha.
There's nothing Gibson does that somebody couldn't do with patience and love.
Once you do it once you've got it.
# NO FEAR.
You got to make it yours my friend
