  • Mark van de Wiel, the Philharmonia's Joint Principal Clarinet, brings his instrument to Graham de Vere White at Prozone Music. At the workshop, they look back at their 40 year relationship whilst Graham expertly works on the clarinet's maintenance. Mark is also joined by Lyndon Chapman from Buffet Wind Instruments to talk about the 50 years with his clarinet, and the Philharmonia Orchestra.
Our series, Maintaining Music highlights the relationships between Philharmonia musicians and the craftspeople who build and maintain their instruments.
As members of a world-class orchestra performing across the globe, Philharmonia musicians are no stranger to a faulty instrument. Talented and trusted craftspeople ensure that our players feel confident and comfortable with their valuable instruments.
Through this series we discover how human connections are key to a customised, working instrument.

PS. The old R13 s were great instruments. We just have to learn to play them. Jack McCaw who was with The Philharmonia years ago used to play them. Thanks Mark The Philharmonia has always had great clarinet players. Thank you and God bless you and yours. Bill. Uk

Thank you so much for this wonderful video sharing so much of your wonderful musical testimony. I bought my R13 clarinets 1970s from Pages Walk. I still love the English clarinets especially those from Peter Eaton. Have you played British instruments in your illustrations career. I think that Selmer also great clarinets which have not been used here orchestrally ! The late Ted Planas believed that Bernard Waltons unusual clarinets were originally Selmer’s, modified. I grew up as a boy listening to the Philharmonia recordings with Otto Klemperer. I still as an old man buy his cds even tough they’re in the attic on vinyl. You’re in the most amazing orchestra Mark. Thank you for dedicating your life to those clarinets. God bless you both. Bill. Uk

Thank you. Very interesting to see these little workshops maintaining the instruments and the people maintaining the crafts.
Apparently (says the enthusiast layman) the world is running out of uilleann pipe makers, and the price is skyrocketing partly as a result. These skills may be lost entirely if we're not careful.
