My favorite western. The music is perfect and from the perspective of time, nostalgic and sad. Wistful. There will never be another western like it, never.

It was a movie without flaws. It wasn't just Ladd who played well, they all did. I'll mention Brandon deWild. His portrayal of a lonely young boy in the west was very good. I grew up on the Idaho side of the Tetons. We admired guns and those that were good shots. A lot of our food came from that. I've known a lot of Shanes in my life.

I'm glad I was born in a time that I learned to hunt and fish and do things outdoors. I'm from around San Antonio, TX. One of my uncles lived outside of a town called Runge. You go about 60 miles from San Antonio to Kenedy a town of 3000 people then you take hwy72 for 11 miles in between all you have is the San Antonio River on it's way to the Gulf of Mexico, theres Runge, population 619, then go another couple of miles and you turn left on this dirt road and go another couple of miles. That's when you got to Uncle Slim and Aunt Ruby's house, nothing but miles and miles of country and it wasn't until us kids could smell Aunt Ruby's homemade bread was about ready that the grown ups would see or hear from us. I swear you could be miles from the house and up wind, but you could smell that bread when it was about ready and all the kids would be in single file line at the back door, because if you hadn't caused any trouble she would cut off a slice of bread with butter on it for each kid. Young ones now have no idea what being a kid in the country is like, wouldn't trade it for all the oil In Texas. Take a potato and your bb or pellet gun, shoot a dove, clean and gut it, dig a whole put your potato in it , throw. Some dirt on top of it build a fire on top of that , put a stick through your dove and cook it. By the time it was cooked kick the fire aside, get your potato and peel it . Top would be a little blackened but you had a lunch fit for, well for a country boy out in the country. Glad I was able to have those times, I'm sure you adapted to the ways of Idaho, but have memories that are in that line of living. Yeah, we were very fortunate, hope your time growing up was good for you

If any body came looking for money to do a remake of Shane, first we could hear the laughter coming from Hollywood in Texas. Secondly, you would get a report from TMZ about a person that was sent to a mental institution. I know that nobody is that brave in Hollywood and even there, you can't find someone that stupid. Close, but no....

I saw the movie in 1950's when I was about 10 years old. The emotionally haunting theme song which in my opinion contributes significantly to the movie's success brings back memories for people of my generation. Over time a great movie become nostalgic and even becomes a great myth in the good sense in the history of movies down through the centuries.

I did not see Shane until much later when it was available on TV. My childhood best friend saw it and always said it was a great movie. So I watched it. Had so much more meaning for me seeing it as an adult. I liked it so much that in 2006 I went to Jackson, WY and hired a man who had spent his life documenting the sites where the movie was made. Amazing how they make things so realistic. Ernie's cabin was still there then. The ranch site with the stream was there, but a huge bull buffalo was way too close for comfort. Visited cemetery hill. A trip to remember.

Yes it does, who ever came to the decision to use that music theme for the movie should get 10 Academy Awards, ever once in a while the stars align, and something comes together that is as close to perfect as it can be, the movie wouldn't be Shane without that music, that's simply one of the greatest musical scores for a movie in the history of making movies. It made a great movie a immediate legendary movie. Funny, especially from when you were young how you can hear a song 30 years later and relate it to what grade you were in and other specifics of your life when you first heard that song. Isn't anything about this movie that is not top shelf. Shane come back Shane, those days are gone, just like the character in the movie.

My wife and I were lucky to have met up with Walt since he was winding down his activities due to illness. Last I heard from him was in 2008. Easily one of the most memorable times of my life.

Am I just like other old people, who on looking back into the past feel that the old movies are better than the stuff we see today. Back then they had to have well written scripts, devoid of sex, car chases, explosions, computerized monsters, and the actors seemed to be at the tops of their craft. SHANE had everyting, George Stevens as director, Alan Ladd, Jack Palance, Jean Arthur, Ben Johnson, Ellen Corby, Nancy Kulp, and a host of other character actors that altogether created a classic. It was not just a "western," it was a story about the changing of the so-called wild west to a more civilized state (the settlers), the underlying admiration (love) theme between Ladd and Arthur, deWilde's admiration of Shane, and the hard working pioneer farmers.
All is summed up in the dialogue between Shane and Ryker, when in the gunfight in town, Shane tells Ryker that his kind of days are over (that of ruthless cattle barons pushing sodbusters off the land) , Ryker than replies "what about your days, gunfighter?" And Shane replies, that the only difference between him and Ryker is that Shane knows this fact but Ryker does not. Great lines. Great movie!

Baddest of the bad, good guy/Shane -"you are a dirty low down yankee liar", bad guy answering in the coolest tone of voice ever, "prove it". Now that's a bad guy, his picture should be next to the term" bad guy" in Webster's book of terms.
