Lazar Naumovich Berman (February 26, 1930 - February 6, 2005) was a Soviet Russian classical pianist, Honoured Artist of the RSFSR (1988). He was hailed for a huge, thunderous technique that made him a thrilling interpreter of Liszt and Rachmaninoff and a late representative of the grand school of Russian Romantic pianism. Emil Gilels described him as a "phenomenon of the musical world".

Lázar Naúmovich Berman (ruso: Лазарь Наумович Берман, Lasari Naumovič Berman) (San Petersburgo, 26 de febrero de 1930 - Florencia, 6 de febrero de 2005) fue un pianista de música clásica, discípulo de Alexander Goldenweiser. Debutó en el Conservatorio de Moscú en 1940. Debutó en Londres en 1958 y en Nueva York en 1976. Son muy apreciadas sus interpretaciones de Liszt, Schumann, Chaikovski, Skriabin y Rajmáninov.

Octaves on the left hand are easy.
Juvenal Redivius Part of the difficulty in this piece is that it is completely exhausting, and those “easy” left hand octaves don’t help.
@@ryanmanning2319 yea, the octaves themselves aren't too fast, nor difficult, it's just that they're very exhausting
My right arm hurts just looking at the consistently massive effort required to play so many forté tremolo octaves and chords.

Schuberts original version came with lyrics included. In the Liszt version here, the piano is singing the lyrics while accompanying itself which really is quite a difficult thing to do.

This is one of the most difficult pino pieces. The cool thing is that it (listening) seems like a easy piano piece. So the musician that plays it must to be very prepared. I want to learn it in five or six years from now.

It's nice to set goals like these but you really shouldn't specify a certain date. Practice and play it whenever you feel ready. It's important to challenge yourself and learn pieces you love and enjoy. Good luck!

That is a lot for two hands! Thumbs up to Mr. Berman. I wish the final recitative was not so quiet. It sounds like it cuts out before the final two chords.
It didnt really sink in just how hard this piece is until i tried just the opening right hand (which i foolishly thought looked really simple)

I saw Lazar Berman play this in recital at Severance Hall in 1978. Simply epic playing of a most difficult score !

Honestly the hardest part for me is always the erlkonig's parts. The jumps are absolutely enormous, and the voicing is really hard to get right

@@_PROCLUS ich stimme auch zu. Obwohl Transcriptionen sehr schön sein können, nehmen sie trotzdem eine Art zweiter Klasse. Das ist ganz der Fall fūr mich wenn es sich um vokale Stücke handelt. Nicht jeder kriegt es hin der Melodie treu zu sein. Vor Allem wenn es sich um Pianisten handelt, die wenig oder gar kein deutsch kennen wie mit diesem Schubert Lied. So höre ich lieber jemand wie Dietrich Fiscber-Dieskau als ein Klaviervirtuose der nicht diese Sprache gut versteht und im Grunde nur Tastenakrobatik macht. Aber Liszt ist und war gut in vieler Hinsicht. Hervorragend mit seinen Beethovensinfonientranscriptionen und eigenen Preluden und sinfonische Poems.
