- As the remnants of 19th-century Victorian ideals died out, the horrors of World War I and the rise of Hollywood played a major part in establishing what made men attractive 100 years ago. And some of it will surprise you.

Which of these things do you think is still attractive today?
Fit men with high cheekbones
Slicked back hair on men
I like the way men dressed in the 20s and 30s. It was somewhat formal without being uncomfortable and it was clean and neat. It looked like the person actually put in some effort.
I love boater hat..
Yes, and the cool hats
I think it's going to come back into style soon. I would love to see men wear their pants at their waist.
Thanks, Grunge, for telling us what was problematic in the past.
Now, can you give us a video about what women found attractive 100 years ago?
I can’t stand the nasty, dirty, very long and shaggy, unkempt beards popular now.
Informative but the title does not match the video.
A clean shaven face is very good
I really prefer it to the beard's fashion.. 🤮🤮🤮 To me beard is associated to the muslim world.
@@vajra1171 Not all Muslim men sport beards
@@jasonfoley6502 yes of course..
@@vajra1171 Then again, having a beard doesn't necessarily make you a man, even macho men have clean shaven faces
I shave everyday.
My Grandfathers had regular manicures, wore cuff links, tie pins, and signet rings. Pearls, rubies, sapphires and diamonds were not just worn by women. A watch was a symbol of their success.
A lot of the women I know love a smooth male face. Think Sean Connery as James Bond. 😂😂😂
I loved to be able to see and kiss my husband's handsome face. But after he got tired of endless shaving and grew a beard,
I learned to appreciate it too.
@@judithsixkiller5586 Same here. My hubby had a beard for nearly 20 years and it started getting sparse, so he shaved it.
My favorite: the Heidelberg scar (or dueling scar). Shorthand for young, educated, athletic, military, European, upper class and maybe even dangerous.
As a person of Hungarian descent, I concur.
C'mon! Valentino's looks enchanted countless ladies! His dreamboat looks could never be, "so called,".
If you actually watch him on film it’s clear why he was so popular. He had that it factor.
@@cleocatra9324 Absolutely!
It was a "So called exotic look". He was cast as a swarthy poc.
When I was younger, I liked a man not wearing a perfume but smelled of freshly washed clothes.
I loved "Old Spice" on a guy. No beard or even a mustache, NO tattoos or piercings. And a nice short hair cut. I like a clean and wholesome look. However the smell of freshly washed clothes would certainly be appealing as well.
I actually dislike people walking around smelling of detergent, imo it’s too much detergent if you can smell it🤷♀️
In the 'teens and twenties, the Arrow Shirt Man in full page ads everywhere was THE acme of 'the desirable male' in the era. Leyendecker was the illustrator and basically created the archetype young man: WASPY and Anglo-saxon, athletic and Yale or Princeton to the fingertips. Leyendecker was gay and the Arrow Shirt man was modeled over and over by his exceptionally attractive boyfriend. Millions of women tore the ads out and put them on the wall as an image their 'ideal mate'.
Facial hair in my opinion looks better if it’s manicured, bushy no… Clean shaven’s fine , except those with razor thin lips =smiley face 😀🙂
In your narrative you forgot to mention what women found attractive 100 years ago, so your headline is misleading. Not good.
Is there a way to reference the Movies you use in your Mini-Docs?
Some of them look interesting and watchable
Fascinating.
It's not pronounced bril in tyne. It's Brill yan-teen!
Thanks👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
The joke reference I often make when I see an older building with a big, towering structure on top of is that it looks like a radio tower from "The Starlight Room, high atop the Roosevelt Hotel" as old movies often depicted their lavish broadcasts! Haha!
The "Hitler moustache" was fairly common during and after WW1 because you could keep your moustache if you trimmed off the sides of it and still wear a gas mask. Some men continued to wear it like that as it signified you were a military/combat veteran. My grandfather wore that kind of moustache until WW2 started, and then grew the sides back out.
I don't like beards either
Beards don't like you either.
100 years ago in 1924 beards and tats were repugnant…
Technically, Valentino was Latin.
The video makers forgot one thing. Women of that time still earned less than men and were relegated only to certain jobs or to housework. For this reason they looked for men who could make a good living.
They weren't relegated, they knew their roles.
@@MrROTDWhen women's roles are being determined by men, they're being relegated. That's what relegated means.
They looked to,have families. That is a virtue.
That has nothing to do with this subject.
Hurt man feelings.
why would I be surprised?
I wonder what the haircut of Bobby Ewing was called... you know, the one that made him look like a mushroom
Lately I watched a film of that time period, and it was impossible to keep the man apart. They all looked the same to me
The first guy you see in this video looks like one of the backup dancers featured prominently in Madonna's "Vogue" & "Truth or Dare". Shorter hair; same face.
It all goes to show that beauty is subject to fashion.
Marrying because of personality???How Drowl!😜👍
It’s ‘droll’
Droll
I like facial hair though, but just a stubble ans some mustache
I love beards. It’s unfortunate that my husband can’t grow one.
does anyone know who the actor is at the 1:20 minute mark wearing the head scarf & earrings? i think it's Errol Flynn but not sure
edit* as I said originally, I wasn't sure if the man was Errol Flynn or not. 2 kind people responded letting me know it's actually Douglas Fairbanks, Sr in "The Thief of Baghdad"
Sure looks like Errol Flynn to me as well😁
I think it was Rudolph Valentino. *See 7:43-46ish 🥂 (But not sure either. 😬. ✨✨Alas, It is Douglas Fairbanks.✨✨
It was Douglas Fairbanks.
Not Errol Flynn. Definitely Douglas Fairbanks in the Thief of Bagdad (1924) as mentioned below.
@@2244ntho66 -Douglas Fairbanks it is. ✨🥂✨
Not the straw hats 😮. Straw hat wars!
That change from status to personality is fascinating to me. I'm sure it was a slow, gradual change over a generation or two, but in hindsight it must've been pretty quick. Maybe shocking and confusing to some families. Or maybe some people liked it. I can only guess how individuals must've handled it.
I honestly do not see the problem of one race portraying another. It’s Art after all.
It was racism. The public wouldn’t watch a movie with an actor who was a “real” Latino, Asian, Arab etc. They wouldn’t hire actors of the actual ethnicity they were portraying.
@@hilaryb8807you’re wrong. YOU see racism. It’s makeup to create a look
@@hilaryb8807 that was then. This is now and I think we are beyond that. After All.. Every human on earth has what you call racism hard wired into our brains.
It is a natural defense mechanism to be suspicious of people who do not look like us.
People just have to get over it and move on.
Yes. No one complains today when a straight actor plays a gay character.
It is/was a problem because when people of color were portrayed, some of their well known physical features, such as lips in people of African descent or eyes in people of Asian descent, were exaggerated, making them seem unattractive/worthy of mockery. Also, with all these white actors portraying people from other races, it didn’t allow people of those different groups to have an opportunity to get into the industry, so they were excluded. This also reinforced the idea that whiteness was the ideal and anything else was seen as less than.
A lot of this wasn't just back then 😏
He lied about his initial denial, yet when confronted with video, he claimed he was "seeking help." He's toast, whether in court or the court of public opinion.
Clean shaven or well kept scruff, I can take it or leave it.
I can't stand beards
They don't like u either
I think there is a good range of lady shavers that could be of benefit for you 👍.
lol well I have a beard and will never shave again.
I’m not much for beards either…
@@decemberjoy86 that’s because you haven’t been with a real man lol 😂 jk everyone has there preference.
Yea cause folks picking their own spouse works so well.
We'll find you a husband.
This has very little to do with what ladies found ayytactive
At least you're trying!
Women love my beard....they are always surprised with how soft it it.....
Money then money now money tomorrow
I can't stand beards too!!
Thank God I am in 2024 🙏Stubble ,manicured facial hair , big muscles ,tattoes ..etc.
*European women.
The only ones that matter.
I strongly dislike fascial hair - men look SO MUCH better without it!!!
Sorry! Just my opinion!
Now days men have more fur on the face than on the nether regions and women suffer from 5 o’clock shadow……..down there. 👀
Minge
Clean shaven or a manicured beard. I like both. I don’t like the two day growth stubble, looks lazy and unkempt. Like he couldn’t be bothered when he got up today. Personally I’d take Gene Kelly over Lawrence Olivier every time.
maybe or maybe not - perhaps you should site some actual evidence or studies

Valentino had dark olive colored skin, so he was not your run of the mill pale Caucasian..
MONEY - no change thier.
There
Who are all of you kidding they saw the same things they do today their bank accounts.
WHY THIS AWFUL AI !!!!!!!
It’s not AI 😂
Boring
Facial hair in general is not attractive.
Not on women. But some men, yes.
I LOVE facial hair on a man, especially mutton chops! Sexy!😊
1924-2024 money 💰
Offspring the most embarrassing band of the 90s
Idk there was worse. Smash Mouth, Hanson, NSYNC, ect... Offspring was ok in comparison.
bald for 35 yrs. skinhead ,thick curly red brown beard,no fat, lifelong soldier in a drug war, no alcohol or chemicals, love weed all day everyday by the..WILL
Ok.
The iconic 1930s and 40s and the Golden Age of Hollywood was an even better era for men's fashions and style! Men today for the most part dress terribly with their backwards baseball hats and especially with their pants all bunched up around their ankles! As a former retired NYC fashion illustrator who has studied the history of fashion at a fashion/art school in NYC I find that men need to pay more attention to the way they dress and look! Take note of the late greats Cary Grant, Fred Astaire , William Powell and Douglas Fairbanks Jr and how they dressed! Even when wearing casual wear they looked classy, elegant, but comfortable and stylish! They were often on Best Dressed lists! Pants should be tailored and there should be no break in the crease! Even when they wore jeans and a casual shirt they looked well put together! Hem those pants if they're too long! Either do it yourself or find a mother, girlfriend or seamstress/tailor to do it for you, otherwise you'll look sloppy!
The Italian guy playing an arab happened in 2005 in the WWE. Muhammad Assan who was 100% Italian in real life.
