It's almost like giving people a ton of reasons not to buy your console will make it decline. I've been mainly on Xbox since 2008, and they nologer have the same mentality as they used to. I don't want to see Xbox go away, but Microsoft has nobody else to blame but themselves.
I have been the editor of an Xbox site for a very long time, but I have to say I am not a fan of recent Xbox choices. Here in The Netherlands, the situation is more dire than the US for sure. It really feels like they have given up, focussing on Gamepass and software instead.
There's a difference between giving up and doing something differently (a new direction), giving up would mean they no longer produce games or hardware and slowly die out as a brand, (they're not doing that in the slightest), it's the opposite, they see the industry as a whole and want the most players and money possible, only way to do that is by going to the players, if they don't want an Xbox then Xbox will go to them, soon enough playstation will do the same, they make less money and less 1st party games than Xbox so PC is the first choice, Xbox did it first because they have the infrastructure to do so, PS gamers aren't buying games so you'll see PS going the same way in the next few years.
My take: - Microsoft refused to invest in marketing campaigns for their Xbox consoles. - Microsoft bought Activision yet refuses to market their Xbox consoles and brand with the actual Activision games. Missed opportunity to make gamers associate their brand with the massive AAA titles. This is still very important for the future of Xbox hardware imo. - Microsoft announces PS5 versions of their NEW games immediately instead of holding off a bit and even markets PS5 versions on their own channels. No chance to even start associating a game with Xbox. - Microsoft stopped trying to compete with the PS5 the year they finally have SO MANY games coming and even markets their games coming to PS5 at the cost of their own console. At the same time Sony is still trying to fight at every cornor by making 3rd patry game deals and marketing deals. Heck the Xbox games coming to PS5 still dont have the Xbox console mentioned in the trailers on Sony channels but Microsoft DOES mention PS5 on Xbox channels. - Game Pass is fantastic, but I feel like they never truely tried to launch a global marketing campaign for it across all media platforms to win people over. I hope the longterm hardware future of Xbox survives. The best days were when Xbox and PS had BIG competition. It forced both to do better and more and consumera benefitted from it. I bought an XSX and Xbox for exclusives and it feels like I could have both Xbox and PS games if I bought a PS5. Hell even I endured the early XB1 days.
My big confusion is related to how this is likely a big reason gamepass is stagnant. If console sales were higher, gamepass would likely be in a better spot
No, it wouldn't. Gamepass always needed to transcend the console space to hit its performance targets. By and large it hasn't. Gaming is much different than passive media like tv/movies, and the attempt to position it as the Netflix of gaming was shortsighted and relied on a bad analysis of the industry
@asdf_asdf948 for sure, but console IS a path for part of their goal. By backing off, they've missed on millions of subs in the current times. Seemed premature to me
Yeah, it gets really bad for Xbox today. I heard from foxy game or UK. He said that. pS5 had sold 70 million so far since the launch and Xbox isn’t anywhere near that they’ve been out selling them five to one. It’s sad. I hate to see Xbox just become a third-party seller.
This is concerning. I wouldn’t feel confident about having Xbox as my only console. They have an option to kind of have xbox next generation piggyback off of the success of windows and PCs, but nothing is for sure. I would try to move to PlayStation, Nintendo, or PC if all I had was an Xbox.
@thev3432 it's dead in the long term my friend (this vid proves it). Microsoft completely changed their business model, the ps5 is outselling the Xbox by 2 to 1, all Xbox exclusives are releasing on game pass day 1. Xbox is not dead for now but I seriously doubt that there will be a next Xbox gen.
It should be mentioned too that despite the Xbox US numbers being weak, the situation is much, much worse in Europe. I don’t know how much longer European retailers will even bother placing the console in stores.
When you're porting a good chunk of your games to the PS5 while getting nothing in return, well, there's a reason even people who aren't in love with either PS5 OR Xbox are choosing PS5 if they HAVE to pick one. I know I find the PS5 a tough sell to someone who has a PS4, but even I have to admit that if you're only going to pick PS5 or Xbox, the PS5 has just a bit more. At this point, I feel like the Series X would be my "gaming on a budget" console come the next gen if I even bother at all. I don't feel bad for not choosing the Series X. Sure, if you don't have a previous Xbox console, then it's not a bad place to start since it gives you at least a taste of every generation of Xbox. But if you have even the Xbox One, then it's far harder to justify.
I think they intend to do one of these things or both: - They shift away from exclusives but still have a big market share of the games that come out, like literally Xbox have dozens of AAA games on the verge of release, plus they see the future is in the cloud gaming and gaming services like Game pass so they're focusing of that front and they're ahead of their competition. - They wanna build back their ruined reputation of "having no games" by building up a strong line up of games and IPs and providing them to other gamers on the competitions' consoles and once they fix their reputation.... boom, now their games are exclusive.
A very informative video, it was done without any bias. Xbox hardware is going to change at some point and that leaker or predictor will be vindicated.
Non of this console wars matter anymore. They already confirmed their focus is to sale their games through everything else including their own console. They are not stopping making consoles either because they still have an audience plus gamepass on it.
I think the software leap between console generations is diminishing. The slight uptick in performance doesn't justify spending $500 on a new console. Until the games industry pulls their head out of their ass and starts making some consumer friendly quality games console sales will continue to dip. I have an One S from 2018 and zero interest in upgrading.
This has been the most pointless generation. The fact that they couldn't even be bought in stores for much of their early life just made it worse. I shifted to Steam/Bazzite on handheld and mini pc. In addition, trying to push everyone to digital - the retailers have no incentive in pushing the hardware.
Microsoft would still lose money trying to bring publishers into a dying platform. SEGA went from not releasing games on Xbox to day one releases on Game Pass and that can only be explained with trucks upon trucks filled to the brim with money. There are more examples of paid ports that would have skipped the platform if Microsoft didn't pay for it like NieR: Automata. Epic is trying desperately to take publishers into the EGS and most of them aren't too wiling even with tons of money upfront and the sales fee discount.
Bro, maybe you can do a video explaining ps plus entry level and xbox game pass core. For me the barrier of entry to play online doesn't have any sense, when f2p games are the ones that make the most money (fortnite). It made sense when f2p games didn't exist, but now that there are microtransactions on AAA games, they are only gatekeeping people from playing their favorite game online. What do you think? I would love a vid about it.
The fact if you dont back up the boot partition for your m.2 internal storage, when it dies, you will have a bricked console. Its insane, but xbox one, you could change the hdd/ssd with minimal issues. They went backwards on the hardware. The series X console itself i enjoy it! But i do much prefer my pc.
Hey, I have a solution for Xbox, how about not making everything about profit for once? How about giving us a FIXED XBOX 360 with high quality components that don't fail after a couple years? How about doing something for the love of it rather than the money. Alternatively they can just fail, and that's all right by me.
The final goal isn’t just to sell you some games on Switch, PS5 and Steam though. Ultimately, Xbox still wants to be a wall garden, they just decided that this walled garden can’t be centered around their hardware. Ideally, they want to sell their games on PC through the Microsoft store. Ideally, they want to have the GamePass service available on PlayStation, Switch and Steam. Or, in classic Microsoft fashion, they want to kill the competition by removing the need for gaming hardware entirely by providing a perfect service on phones and smart TVs. Personally, I think they’ll fail. Modern Microsoft is full of talented people but led by incompetent boomers, I think this plan cannot succeed under their current leadership. And once they realize that it’s impossible to get 100 million GamePass subscriptions, get players into streaming, etc… They’ll actually bow out and sell off all their studios. My guess would be 2035. But who knows, we’re back in a technological revolution that’ll advance us rapidly; I just think a company like Valve has shown more success in forward thinking, whereas Microsoft has failed every single time in the past decade or two.
Excellent video. The big question imo is, what happens if maintaining Xbox hardware becomes a pure cost center on Microsoft's book? Like how much spillage of gamepass subscribers to other platforms can Microsoft take? Because this spillage is happening as we speak, there is no doubt of that in my mind.
This is why they want the mobile store and cloud gaming to take off. Expand beyond consoles and turn Xbox into an experience you can play anywhere. There will always be a market for dedicated video game devices and I don't see Microsoft backing away from that. Surface would've died with Windows Phone if Microsoft had no reason for a internal hardware solution for Windows.
@JohnWelfare I think the mobile store will take a lot of doing to get going. If you're a Candy Crush person, then why do you need to move to Microsoft's store? They have a much better shot at cloud, though. I also think they will try and take some of Valve's share of PC spend.

They could just keep making series x and s for cheaper and then sell next gen as top tier and use the mobile phone strategy and keep moving faster then Sony can keep up bc eventually since Sony doesn't have a plan set up as seen on game releases and Xbox does bc they are publishers of AAA developers they bought n own in house of major franchises and plenty of smaller company's on their list mixed in to help keep their triple As scattered threwout the year then seems like Phil has taken a lot more then just selling games stuck in one console and put them on all consoles for revenue for 1 make his console still for diehards 2 keep money flow on games for new gamers and gamers coming to game pass for a large multitude of different styling of game library and 3 keep pressure on Sony whilst showing all of sonys gamers what they have on game pass that want to trade up n get a better system. Bc it's been stated series x is 4 years older then ps5pro and still is more powerful then a mid gen ps5 so that's why they arnt making a mid gen update they are going early to next gen again getting away from PS and doing their own thing instead of following a trend only time will tell
Xbox aint declining as a console its just flat out just dead. Its not loss of 60% YOY the real ugly truth is Xbox lost 60% of their consumer base AND growth is the real truth. And I know some are gonna be like but but the graph that xbox showed that hardware is flatlining. People don't buy consoles?! They don't buy "XBOX CONSOLES." Xbox as a console and brand went from king of video games to slave. And those owning an xbox are essentially free QA testers. People think 68.7 Billion dollars in a publisher acquisition was smart till you point out how many games that could have made. AAA game dev work could be as little as 60 million to 1 billion Meaning the activision acquisition ate literally as many as or as few as 343 AAA to 68 nearly AAAA projects to further give color to just how many projects that is wasted in money on the activision acquisition that would be a FULL CONSOLE GENERATIONS amount of funding.
People break switches all the time not to mention there are those who literally have like 7 switches, PlayStation has both a slim and pro version out now which drove sales up for them, then we have Xbox who have the same consoles just with a disc less version of the series x and one with bigger storage space. Let’s also not forget that the PlayStation has been out for almost a decade longer than Xbox and Nintendo has been out for like 20 years more or something like that. Both of them carved out a giant part of the industry because of them being out longer with many fanboys refusing to switch or give others a try. You can call me an Xbox fanboy if you want but I play on all 3 consoles and on pc. Xbox is just fine.
The og xbox came out at the same time as the ps2, an insane homerun that dominated that generation and xbox was 2nd in place, when the x360 came out, it straight up beat the ps3 into submission til they slashed the price in half and ended that generation as the better of the two. Now? 2024 was xbox's worst performing year EVER. xbox is not just fine.
This is incredibly dire by any standard. oh well, they own most of the western gaming industry now and will make plenty on all the most popular live service games they bought and just pumping out more games than any other publisher per year.
In the US it's over 16 million. A lot of people don't like when I say I estimate over 30 million for XBS right now ha. It should end around or slightly above 40 million.
Have never bought a Xbox and never will. I will admit i did want one in the 360 era but went with PS3 instead Sony just had more games. Today I got a PC which has pretty much all the Xbox games. PS5 and switch. There is just no need for a Xbox. It’s a shame really since Sony has become complacent and their latest gen games have been lacking.
People are acting like this is an Xbox The reason why the brand is dead . And I can bet these people will defend if PlayStation allows people to stream their game anywhere . Playstation should do the same . Since they have no exclusives .
i think the Series S is a really good bang for your buck on Xbox's part, can grab one for $80-200 and play anything, feel like too much variation has hurt Xbox tho
Don Mattrick is the one responsible for killing Xbox. His total blunder of the 8th generation was the equivalent of Xbox slitting its own wrists and jumping into a vat of acid. XB1 told the world that it was a TV box that ALSO plays games, while PlayStation said WE are THE gaming machine for the living room. And most gamers chose accordingly. Though I will argue that Xbox live, controllers, and Hardware (since 9th gen) is better than PlayStaton which is why I am still on Xbox. But unless they offer a product worth buying next gen, powerful enough to be fitting of the 10th generation of consoles I will just be moving to PC. I am willing to pay a fair price for powerful hardware, but if they are going to drop the loss leader approach that made the consoles accessible, and aren't willing to remove the paywall for basic online play then I will be out.

I typed a single word in Korean to help some guy with a misunderstanding and my comment got removed as spam too. As for your opinion, something will be lost. Remember when Sony had no competition in the 7th gen and the PS3 cost £599 compared to the sub 300 Xbox 360 and Wii? They though they had none this time and the PS5 Pro launched at the equivalent of $1000 USD outside the US again. Without someone, ANYONE at this point to keep Sony in check, they're going to keep going until gaming is a hobby reserved for the well off, where ownership of physical media is gone and only the rich will be entertained. They've made similar anti-consumer/anti-competitive moves in the past. Such as the built-in controllers on smartphones like the Xperia Play, those don't happen because Sony patented the built-in controller on smartphone concept so no one else can compete with the thing they haven't touched in over a decade. They'll only get worse if Xbox goes too, because then there's no one left to stop them from buying the AAA devs off of Nintendo and PC, making them the only option. I respect your opinion, and felt like adding mine to the mix.

No, that's why I said traditional console sales are over if this is the case.
@@JohnWelfare That's what i think too, it's the most probable option... Xbox will have to make a tough decision for the next gen
They could incorporate AI upscaling, frame gen gadgetry to sell it at a cheaper price.
AAA game dev work could be as little as 60 million to 1 billion
Meaning the activision acquisition ate literally as many as or as few as 343 AAA to 68 nearly AAAA projects to further give color to just how many projects that is wasted in money on the activision acquisition that would be a FULL CONSOLE GENERATIONS amount of funding.
Amazing that you’re making videos now!!!
Gamers play console sales
This is incredibly dire by any standard. oh well, they own most of the western gaming industry now and will make plenty on all the most popular live service games they bought and just pumping out more games than any other publisher per year.
Great video here, love the detailed and clear explanation.
Extremely good video btw.
Very informative video! If you had to estimate what are series console sales so far and what what might they end up at?
In the US it's over 16 million. A lot of people don't like when I say I estimate over 30 million for XBS right now ha. It should end around or slightly above 40 million.
Will not play on game box unless modded rbh 360 since Xbox live has gone off last yr older the better or built pc built from used computer parts
Great video
Have never bought a Xbox and never will. I will admit i did want one in the 360 era but went with PS3 instead Sony just had more games.
Today I got a PC which has pretty much all the Xbox games. PS5 and switch.
There is just no need for a Xbox. It’s a shame really since Sony has become complacent and their latest gen games have been lacking.
you should still get a 360 lot of exclusive bangers stuck on there
People are acting like this is an Xbox The reason why the brand is dead .
I shared it with my friends
I am willing to pay a fair price for powerful hardware, but if they are going to drop the loss leader approach that made the consoles accessible, and aren't willing to remove the paywall for basic online play then I will be out.
gracias por el video muy buen contenido
Bye bye fake brand nothing of value will be lost.

@@JohnWelfare Thank you I'll keep my comments peaceful but my opinions need to be respected.
@@w0nd3r6 It's youtube itself that deletes comments mostly. Try using that invisible letter thing on here for example, they'll remove the comment as spam.
