RIP James Avery. :( What I love about Uncle Phil is that he's a REALISTICALLY portrayed "scary dad"...he doesn't put up with Will's bullshit, he can be harsh and has a short temper but it is unmistakable how much he truly loves and values Will and Carlton as people. Will is basically his 3rd son. A lot of sitcoms play up the "mean dad despises the main character even if it is his own son/relative" trope too much and it's refreshing to see that Phil isn't one of those.
I know , he's technically the villain and Will is the protagonist , so it was interesting to see the duality of his feelings of affection and love for Will as well. As much as he complained from the moment Will entered his home , he looked out for him and ALWAYS treated him like one of his own children , seeing the series again there's a lot of wisdom and love in the way he parents his children and Will.
I love the "you are my son will, end of story" Nice nod to when we first see them where uncle Phil says "that's my nephew my marriage" Like the whole story of fresh Prince built up to that moment. Love it
@Lari Lazo they do it a few times in the first season or 2. Joking that will thinks he’s some number 1 selling rapper, that Will needs to learn parents don’t understand (his song), etc
Uncle Phil was more like a father to Will than Will’s own father ever was, but to hear Uncle Phil tell him “You are my son Will, end of story” had me in tears 😭😢 Uncle Phil was the best tv dad
I find it exceptional how Uncle Phil considered Will his own flesh and blood even though they’re only related by marriage, you don’t see that often. RIP Uncle Phil
Love the fact that every time Phil is angry with the family, Will ALWAYS says “since we’re not related by flesh or blood, can i leave” 😂😂 every time makes me laugh
Man... when Phil said, _"...you are my son, Wil."_ That hit me right in the ♥️. The whole series led up to that moment. And it was perfect. Not too much, nor too little. Just right. James an excellent role model of a man for a generation of young men; regardless of the color of their skin. He had excellent delivery, every time. RIP Mr Avery. You are missed.
