Thanks , Im just learning this myself too , I take you guys along for the ride ....sometimes is good sometimes its bad. but if it motivates you to try too, thats awesome ATB Bruce
Thank you for tips on sheathing. Found an old Hoosier type axe head full of rust and pits, restored it to a high shine and now,I want to protect it from the elements and traveled bumps. You are the best. Thanks🇨🇦👍🍺
In the Fire Department when we fight forest fires we aren’t allowed to walk around with a live edge on an Axe. So what some of us did was to make a Aluminum cup just a little bigger than the Axe head and 5 inches deep so when we didn’t need the Axe we just drop it head first into that cup and presto, Axe is protected and it’s close to hand if you need it. When your done for the day, put that form fitting cover on.
Nice work, thanks for the tips and design ideas. I will likely put a finger-slot window, so the blade can be drawn up with one hand. And make the bottom of the handle slot a bit wider around for easier removal
+Fat Oldman, yeah I prefer to do it like that just to give people an idea of what's involved . With a build there are plenty of vids out there to get more details on each step, better then 5 hours of film. Lol Thanks for watching Atb Bruce Thanks for watching
Not sure about the "community" but for me you got between 10 seconds and 8 minutes to capture and hold my attention. Next? Shiny, shiny..... You've proven that its possible to pack lots of good info into a watchable segment. Keep up the good work!
+Fat Oldman Yeah it's so true, 10 mins is kinda maximum length for a video before people start skipping or turn off, but with a vid like this it would be a waste of time doing it in 3 or 4 parts,.. The videos I do have a pretty low demographic (bushcraft and leather work) so I'm not in this to be a UA-cam superstar. Thank you so much for watching and commenting.. I will try and make more vids like this Atb Bruce
totally agree with fatman , and thankx for an insightful video lesson [might have to watch a few times when i start the project for a billhook using your principles]
This is a really nice design!!!! I have a couple of single bits that would look darn good with those sheath’s!!! When you where flipping the cover piece over and back before you cut your sharp to match…I was thinking that I liked the look of that folded flap being straight???? You could probably actually make a little wallet for the inside as a series of flaps with a zipper across there??? Would be kinda cool when you were going to the woods you would have your wallet and your cards and cash in the old axe sheath!!! This is a freaking fantastic video buddy!!!!
Thanks Jessie , with your spoon carving skills you should have no problem crossing over to leather work. it just takes patients , planning and a bit of artistic flare thanks for watching brother
I have been thinking on something like this for a while. I am a carpenter by trade, and I would love to carry my axe on my belt. Problem is, I dont like having the mask and the loop being separate, so I was thinking something like what you made. Might have to add a couple of pockets on the outside for essential items... :D
I just randomly stumbled across your video, great work! I enjoyed watching. I always wondered how leather was formed around different objects. I wish you would have talked a bit more about the tools you used and how/ what you soaked the leather in. Thanks again!
@@WildGingerBruce You said you'd like to see the axe sheath that I ended up making for my mate; Here it is.... ua-cam.com/video/XjxvwagGbIM/v-deo.html Many Blessings
That turned out very nice. I have a small camp hatcher that i have had since i was a small child. So that would be at least 45 years old. I vaguely remember it having a sheath and it being worn and falling apart. So watching this video has shown me the steps needed to make myself a sheath. Thank you. ::SUBBED::
May have been mentioned before but I wet leather to do the tooling. A spurge and a heavy bowl with water makes it easy to dampen as much as you need to when ever necessary.
Nice sheath! just a thought but maybe put a popper button(for got the name of it) on the flap and on the part that connects to the belt so the axe can easily be put into the sheath with out fiddling around? hope that made sense haha
I know this is an older video, and a rather different side of the leatherworking hobby, so you likely won't answer this, but do know whether I would be able to form a mask with 3 mm thick leather, It's the only piece I have and I can't find any sources for whether or not it would work. thank you.
3mm is a little thick, however you could get a skiving knife and thin it down in the areas you want to wet form. I'm always happy to answer questions Atb Bruce
@@WildGingerBruce I definitely mill! Had a full can of spray lube coat 1/2 my truck box because the axe was just laying in there bouncing around on the bumpy roads and it poked the side of the can and blowwee she was spraying everywhere…. 😂👍. Definitely need a couple of cover’s!
brilliant stuff i wasnt even tempted to skip at all, total love fest going on for the axe sheath, want one, didnt know i wanted one till i saw it hahahah really great work dear boy
I like. I didn't when I first saw it, one similar to it came with my tomahawk from Simply Rugged Holsters that I wasn't happy with. It was good work, I just didn't like that hang. But watching you make this made me like it, I may try to mimic it but with a hang I like. Thanks for the cool video!
Most axes have a sort of knob on the handle end. I noticed that you molded the leather to fit around the upper handle. How do you allow for the difference in the girth of the knob?
if you look at the final images the sheath is not stitched along the bottom so it kinda opens up as you slide in the handle, i also added a rivet so the whole axe cant fall out thanks for watching atb Bruce
You seem to work much the same way as I do, organised chaos. Though I noticed you tool your leather dry. Is there a reason for this? I found I get much better/ smoother marks when wet.Love your work. Looking forward to seeing more
