My big brother passed away in 2021. A friend of one of his sons shared a memory of coming to their house after school to find "Sugar Sugar" playing and my brother and his wife dancing to it in the living room with the kids. She said it was the moment she knew the kind of relationship she wanted when she grew up. He loved music with a passion and I know he would have loved this channel. Thanks for bringing us these great interviews Professor!

As he described the process, I thought, they can still do multitrack with singing on top of singing, but digitally. However, it seems they try to do the same trick using an exact copy which of course doesn't sound the same as a fresh "copy" recorded while listening with headphones.

I know most people sneered at"bubblegum" rock but it was so darn catchy that most normal people would sing along when their peers weren't around. I created a Bubblegum playlist to play in the office where I worked (called it Bazooka Joe). It received more requests for volume increases than any other compilation I have ever created.
People enjoyed bubblegum music far more than they admit. Ofcourse we didn't know back then that Bubblegum (and Disco) would come to dominate the 21st century Top 40.

I was "too cool" to admit that I liked bubblegum... In early middle school I liked The Monkees, but by late middle to early high school I was into the Moody Blues, The Doors, CCR, Iron Butterfly. In fact In a gadda da vida was the first album I saved up to buy, followed shortly by CCR's Green River and Proud Mary/Born on the Bayou on 45. I still have that 45. I saw John Fogerty live several months ago. And I unashamedly like bubblegum.

When I was a child, I watched The Archies Cartoon on television. That's when I first heard "Sugar Sugar". I love Bubblegum Pop. Both "Sugar Sugar" and "Tracy" are my 2 favorite songs from that genre. I knew Ron Dante was the singing voice of both The Archies and The Cuff Links but I never heard an interview with Ron until now. Nice get, Professor. Also, as a lifelong Barry Manilow fan (Barry was my mom's favorite), I'm a fan of Ron's for what he did for Barry's career. From 1973-1981, Ron produced all of Barry's albums. He also sang backup on many of Barry's most well-known songs. Great singer, songwriter, and record producer. Very enjoyable episode. "Sugar Sugar" brings back fond childhood memories.

This maybe the most fun song to sing along with ever made, simply magic. Never knew who sang it or even how it came about. Fantastic interview with a true professional vocalist Ron Dante! Amazing story told by an amazingly humble artist.I remember when I had this single cut off the back of a cereal box, not kidding Honeycomb had singles you could cut off the box made of cardboard with plastic over it. I even had The Archie's original single Bang-Shang- A-lang. Love this episode!!

This song was released just as I was finishing the final year in high school; ready to graduate in June of 1968. So it has many memories for me.
In the early 1970s, when the lady in your life decided you were not up to her standard that became a difficult time for a man. The Vietnam War was still going on and so was the draft of soldiers. Like in previous wars, you had two options:
    - Wait for the draft and get what they chose for you
    - Enlist and choose what you would like to do
I was lucky and they let me get training then off to Germany, instead of Vietnam.
The song was just as popular among the German people while I was there. It is still one my favorites for all time!

I’ve always loved this song. I first heard it at the end of an episode of the Archie Show back when it came out (I was 12 at the time), I bought the 45 right after that, and this song is just so melodically and harmonically catchy! As a musician, I also love the arrangement on the 45. It’s just a great tune that takes me back to my childhood.

Greatest “drive-by” song ever. Walk by anyone while singing it and they will start singing it too in seconds!

I enjoyed the interview very much! I was 17 in 1969, and always found "Sugar Sugar" to be such a fun song. Great interview with Ron Dante. Thank you!

I first heard this song when I was 14. I was getting ready to ride my bike, and of course, I had my transiter radio playing music. When Sugar Sugar started playing. Immediately I thought this is a hit! I absolutely loved this song. It's got a great beat and it's so easy to sing along to.❤❤🎉

My 2 favorite Archie songs... Sugar Sugar and Jingle Jangle Not sure who the female vocal was on Jingle Jangle, but she had a beautiful crystal bell quality to her vocals. : )

Great interview - I never knew who sang this... other than the Archies ... I remember cutting this 45 off the back of a cereal box (cant remember the kind) back in the day when I was maybe 7 years old and getting it to play on my older sisters 45 record player. Its wild that this thing is still popular and also wild that you could get pop music on a cereal box... I first hear dit on a Saturday morning when the Archies cartoon came on TV - in those days - Saturdays were practically dedicated to kids cartoons and shows startung early on Saturday morning and going to maybe early afternoon. In our small town, there we only receieved perhaps 3 or 4 TV stations which were the big three TV networks (NBC, CBS, ABC and maybe a PBS station). SO if you were a kid and watching TV there was a good chance you go exposed to this song on the Archies cartoon

Yes!! I think it was Super Sugar Crisp. Every cartoon video for every Archies song was exactly the same.

@@denniscarey1621 LOL - right - the animated graphics were identical - thanks for specificity - I had been wondering what the cereal was!

I had totally forgotten about the cereal box record! Now I remember begging my parents to buy that cereal so I could cut out the green plastic disc of Sugar Sugar. We were so poor at that time it was a real hardship to buy that box but somehow they did and surprised me with it. I loved that record. Thanks Mommie and Daddy! I love you!!! RIP

Hah hah, this is cool! I didn't actually hear this song until 1971 when I moved back with my grandparents and was able to watch commercial TV again, but bubblegum rock was pretty high on my playlist for a while. Pretty cool that Ron is still around to reflect on these times!😉👍👍

Ah yes, I remember Suger Suger. It was writen for the Archie Cartoon, which I remember watching in syndication as a kid in the Seventies. The "band" consisted Archie, Reggie, Jug Head, Betty and Veronica. They were directed by a dog. At least in the video segment.

I was definitely in the minority as a young kid. I KNEW who Ron Dante was, I had his first album, Ron Dante Brings You Up, and I had his picture on my wall! So glad to watch this video! 🙂

Excellent interview, man. Loved it. This is a song that I’ve known for literally decades yet never really thought too deeply about. Nice to get the background from the man himself.👍
