  • COMING UP, the story behind an absolute classic of Rock told by its iconic singer. Joy to the World by Three Dog Night became the #1 song of 1971. Chuck Negron who was one of their singers at the time sang those perfect opening lyrics….4 words that would change everything. Jeremiah was a bullfrog. and the rest is history. The song was actually a discarded song from a silly kid’s show that failed. In fact, the band wanted nothing to do with it and turned the song down several times before Chuck Negron finally got it. It’s probably the most familiar and beloved four words ever sung in a pop record This story is one you have to hear to believe, It was written by an actor who was in one of the 80s big movies. In fact, this actor’s mother also wrote a number one hit, the 1st #1 hit for Elvis Presley. the only mother-son to accomplish that in history. Both Danny Hutton the last remains original active member of Three Dog Night and Chuck Negron who sang the original recording share their takes in an exclusive interview. Next on Professor of. Rock.

In many of the interviews I’ve done with legendary artists and groups, they always emphasize the importance of the opening chords or lyrics. To grab a listener and never let them go. Well of the eons of songs that have been written over the last 100 years I think this song might have the best first four-word hook in history.
Jeremiah was a bullfrog. You have to have been living underneath a rock for the last 60 years if you don’t recognize that riveting opening of one of the all-time staples of classic rock and roll by the multi-platinum marauders known as Three Dog Night.
Three Dog Night had a collection of some of the best musicians in the game including Jimmy Greenspoon on keys, Joe Schermie on Bass, Michael Allsup on guitar, and Floyd Sneed on drums.
When they are one of the biggest bands in America selling out live shows nationwide. In fact, they were one of America’s first stadium bands. Led at their peak by the three-force singing trio of Corey Wells, Danny Hutton, and Joy to the World’s lead Chuck Negron. They had 21 top 40 hits from the late 60s into the 70s including One, Shambala, An Old Fashioned Love song, Black and White, Easy to be Hard, Mama Told Me Not to Come and their signature song: Joy to the World.
With a plethora of great material from some of the best songwriters of the time, including Paul Williams, Laura Nyro, and Hoyt Axton. Hoyt Axton was in the 1984 blockbuster Gremlins. He also wrote Joy to the world. Will get more into that in the video. Actually, Thee Dog Night recorded Elton John’s Your Song and released it before Elton’s version. Three Dog Night was a force to be reckoned with back in their peak. Their music is not only timeless but in a six-year period from 1969 to 1974, The group pretty much never left the charts.

A New Orleans DJ asked people to call in and tell stories of being embarrassed by their kids. A lady said she brought her 3 year old son to mass for the first time and at one point the priest said, turn your book to x page our next hymn will be Joy To The World. The 3 year old stood up and screamed at the top of his lungs, Jeremiah was a bullfrog! 😂

One time we were watching Little House on the Prairie and the reverend asked the church to sing Joy to the World and when they sang the gospel, I asked my mom why they didn't start with Jeremiah Was a Bullfrog. There was massive laughter in the house 😅

I became a die hard Three Dog Night fan the minute I heard their song, "One" in 1969 when I was 15. I couldn't believe my ears when Joy to the World was released later in 1970. It was a joy (no pun intended) to listen to because it just raised your spirits every time you heard it. But there's another Three Dog Night song that holds a special place in my heart to this day, Eli's Coming. Before the end of my sophomore year in high school in 1971, I got an offer to go pick pineapples on the island of Lanai in Hawaii. Most kids that went there were forced to because they were troubled kids who needed to learn some discipline. I went because an Elder in my Mormon ward had gotten a job to be a crew chief by Dole Pineapple, the company that believe it or not actually owned the island of Lanai at the time. From the moment we arrived in Lanai City, I immediately became homesick because it was the first time I'd ever been away from home. In 1971, Lanai City was a run down little town with most of the buildings looking like they'd collapse if someone were to slam the front door. I remember going to the one and only theater in town with my other two Mormon friends that decided to go pick pineapples too. The theater was dark and gloomy and literally reeked of age. The little Hawaiian man sitting in the row in front of me had this huge dark spot on his shoulder and during the movie, I swear I kept seeing that spot move. All of a sudden, that dark spot moved to the top of his shoulder so I warned him. He took one look at it and then brushed off the largest cockroach in history from his shoulder as if it happened everyday! Anyway, to make a long story short, sort of as I look at what I've already written, at the height of my homesickness, we walked into this little store in town that actually had a 4 lane bowling ally. We went bowling there a few times but it didn't last long as the ball return kept breaking and we'd have to wait for someone to go retrieve our bowling balls. The store had a little diner that served pretty good hamburgers so we ate there quite often. They also had a juke box that was full of forgettable songs, except one, Eli's Coming by Three Dog Night. That little diner and listening to Eli's Coming kept my spirits high and I made it through the summer of 1971. Thanks again Adam for another amazing video!
PS: A fun fact. I was nervous about asking my Dad for the money to pay for the round trip ticket to Hawaii which was, get ready, $172. He looked at me and gave me this weird grin and said "Sure!" He knew that picking pineapples in Hawaii would be the hardest job of my life, and he was right! Every job I had afterwards was a cinch! Thanks Dad, may you rest in peace until we meet again!

When we went to Yakima one summer, when the fruit was in season, I decided my family was too old and stodgy, (No kids my age), so, I went and picked cherries with the Migrant Workers.
My dad was utterly stunned when he saw what my share of the pickings were.
Pineapples were easy in comparison, my Senior year of Riding Surf. Mind, I had a few more inches and almost double the mass...
But I still had the Work Ethic my dad taught me.
I still WANT to, but my back said, "That's it, we're done."

Fun story. Three Dog Night was one of my dad's favorites bands. He'd play along with his guitar while the 6 of us kids danced. Every year at Christmas he played his guitar and we'd sing Christmas carols. Whenever Joy to the World was suggested, he ALWAYS played this one. We all knew every word. ;) He passed unexpectedly at age 46 in 2009. A few years later, we were all back in Idaho, where he's buried, for Christmas. Since it wasn't likely to happen again soon, we decided to go visit his grave all together. My mom suggested that maybe we should sing some Christmas songs (since that's a tradition). With no prior discussion, we looked at each other and all burst out with, "Jeremiah was a bullfrog!" and sang the entire thing a cappella, with harmonies add the ad libs and everything. It was ridiculous enough to be magical, and really, just what we needed. We also sang the Christmas carol, but realized we didn't actually know all the verses very well. ;)
I never hear the Christmas carol without thinking about this one, and I never hear this one without thinking about my dad. Sweet memories. ❤

I've been a huge fan since I was a boy. I had a ticket to one of his concerts back in the early 80s, but I ended up having to miss it. That same thing happened two more times. I finally got to actually attend one in 1982. It was such a great show.
Coming out afterwards, I had to walk around his tour bus, the Honeysuckle Rose, to get to my truck. So I figured what the hell, I'll never be this close again, and I knocked on the bus door. To my complete surprise, it opened, and there stood his fiddle player.
I asked him "could you please tell Hoyt thank you for me? Tell him I said thank you for all the music?". He said no. "But YOU can", and he stepped aside.
Dream. Come. True. I was directly across a card table from Hoyt freakin' Axton, and I sat there talking to him for nearly two hours. He was just a big ol' bear of a man, even bigger than you'd guess from seeing him in a movie, and just as down to earth nice and friendly as I hoped he'd be.
I've done a LOT of cool stuff in my life, but that night will always be in my Top 2 Favorites.

During one game we were playing at a group outing, he scored a point. To celebrate his amazing play, I belted, "Jeremiah was a bullfrog." He paused, walked up to me looking confused and said, "How do you MY song?" Obviously, someone had sung that to him and he never knew of Three Dog Night or the popularity of this song.

The opening to "Joy to the World" is as recognizable as the opening to "Smoke on the Water" and "Iron Man". Three Dog Night had so much air time back in the 70s that I've forgotten just how many tunes that had that were on the charts and got a lot of air time. Another band not in the Rock Hall that should be. One could argue that they had too many changes in the lineup over the years, but no one can argue that the "classic" lineup should be recognized.

When I was a teenager, I played this album a lot. I taught my nieces the words to this song and they sang it for the crowd at the local skating rink, they were a big hit. Years later, my daughter gave birth to my first grandbaby, who was born with a very severe form of OI, she named him Jeremiah. He wasn't expected to survive, but against all odds, he made it. When she brought him home there were a lot of people waiting to greet him, including my nieces. A fiend of one of my nieces asked my daughter what she named him, and instantly, my nieces and sister all, simultaneously, belted out "JEREMIAH WAS A BULLFROG...!" Their friends were all taken aback by the impromptu concert. Lol! Now that he's older, I sing the words and my sweet Jeremiah sings the music. Everyone who meets my outgoing, spirited and tough little man, immediately fall in love with him. He has certainly brought joy to my world, as well as to any who know him. This song will always be special to me. I'm so glad that TDN shared this with the world.

Three Dog Night, to me, IS the sound of the 70’s, (even though they were the late 60’s as well). Whenever I hear one of their songs, it takes me back to my early childhood! Jeremiah Was A Bullfrog is the first song I knew all the words to and can still sing it word for word to this day! We would listen to TDN when my two older sisters and our three neighbor brothers, Rodney, Gerold, and Eric, would play “Beauty Pageant”. Gerold was the MC and he cut a kiddie pool so he could wear it as a skirt 🤪🤣 We moved from the neighborhood when I was 8 but most of the best memories I have are from the ol’ neighborhood!

Chuck Negron! What a champion! Brilliant to see The Professor of Rock bring out his sheer delight. I loved that interaction. Two great fellas, Worlds apart in their life journey, yet reminiscing about the same magical moment(s) in music history. Thanks guys! djh 🎶

@@jamesbowman6925 Hey James. I thought you were having a lend of me, so I searched him! You could have knocked me over with a feather! So he's older than Mick Jagger! Wow! (all these exclamation points!). Chuck doesn't look to be in his 70's let alone 80's! I'd love to know his diet ... Rock on! djh 🎶

After christmas mass the choir (I was a part of and my Mother was piano player/leader of) was playing christmas carols as unusually large attendees departed slowly. Someone requested joy to the world and my mother instantly started the 3 Dog Night song. This was her sense of humor. The 15 person choir jumped in instantly as if it had been planned. I assure you it was not. What happened next was the real shock. People stopped leaving the church and the everyone began singing.

Now, I know why I love that song so much. I was 11 years old when I first heard it and fell in love with it instantly. Catchy as hell. Can actually place myself back in time when I hgear it. Still love it today. So amazing that a song that I first heard as an 11 year old, still brings so much pleasure to this 63 year old man.

When my sister and I were kids, to entertain ourselves on car rides, we’d sing, no such thing as video games then. Joy to the World was always epic. I’m glad our parents put up with us and our singing.

My Granny loved this song! 💕 She had a frog collection because people heard her singing it and would give her frog figurines. I always think of her when I see frogs because of this song! 💚🐸 She would sing it to me when I was little. I remember jamming out to Mom and Dad’s Three Dog Night records too.

Jeremiah is still one of my top 10 songs of all times and when I saw the teaser on this video, I KNEW it would be Jeremiah. I probably first heard Joy to the World on the way to school (riding with my mom) when I was in the 9th grade. The music from 1965-1974 was simply amazing and I'm very proud to have been there even though it means I'm officially old. I still have Harmony and Golden Bisquits on vinyl.

Three dog night was touring with Steppenwolf back in the early 90s, that was my first concert, though I was too young to understand the importance of who each band was at around 10 or 11 years old, I will forever remember this song and all the others that were forming my love of music I share with my kids every day. Music can truly impact your life in ways you never imagined many years after you first hear a song, if you embrace it and pass that impactful moment on to the next generation they too can share in bringing joy to the world.
