Good analysis and breakdown, shows how much the pros prepare for nutrition beforehand. It'd be interesting to compare to a domestique who's looking to peak mid race and doesn't need to worry about the last few hours
I think those cirkles could be some sort of rice cakes, sticking with the theme of solid food at the start of the race, however that would mean hes getting in close to 100g per hour for the first 100k on just solid food. Therefore the yellow and brown bottles might be non carb mixes. Could be a bit overkill on the solids at the start of the race, but maybe it helps him to keep his stomach settled for when he fully fuels on gels and carb bottles.
good pickup, could be for sure. Maybe he splits the bars in half, so it's half energy bar, half rice cake for a "serving" of solid food. Would make more sense with the serving sizes that way.
One thing to take into consideration also: given how I struggle to squeeze 100% of the gels out and I'm not even racing, I strongly doubt pros can do it mid 350W NP race, especially given how quick it looks on TV. So they are probably only consuming 80 to 90% of the amount that is written on the packet.
@@vladfromfrance Not just with the gels either, with the bidons you often see them discard half-empty bidons, squirt some out of the top to flush out dirt, or snatch a mouthful of carb bar and ditch the rest. Plus sometimes despite race notes they just skip certain gels/bars in the heat of the moment if there's an attack going on etc. I wouldn't be surprised if they're only taking onboard something like 50-75% of what they're meant to/carded up for and probably "over-prescribe" because of this
Thanks for that. I’m always confused when you hear about how much these guys eat/drink but on the coverage it seems you hardly see them taking in anything. But when you explain it like this I can see how it works. I did notice he was regularly drinking at the end.
yeh it can be hard to see them eat on the coverage because they are constantly cutting away, and usually don't eat when they are on the front anyway. But for sure they are!
I've just gone back and watched some of the race and with 20km to go Mathieu Van Der Poel dropped back to his team car and took a small palm sized bottle.. Really nice breakdown of what was an epic race Jesse. A special mention to Fred Wright, only 22 yrs old and had a race to remember..
I agree with your analysis, I think the one variable is that the pros in races don't eat the entire serving. When you watch them on TV they just squeeze a gel real quick into their mouth, they are not consuming all the contents. They are probably also not finishing their entire bottles, they just take small sips and then might be tossing them half full and grab fresh ones. So he may have effectively consumed 10-20% less than 100 grams of carbs per hour. Quality content though. Way to spot that sticker!
Looks like you were bang on mate. "As CyclingTips understands it, the filled-in circles are rice cakes, the rectangles are energy bars, the gel-like graphics are, well, gels, and the bottles are bottles of energy drink. The smiley face emoji visible at the 200 km mark - shortly before the penultimate ascent of the Oude Kwaremont - represents a caffeine gel. Within each fueling method, different colors represent different options."
These guys just don't seem to slow down. Just shows how incredibly efficient these guys are, that they can keep churning out the watts for well over 5hrs no probs, as long as they keep up the carbs etc . My muscles as an average person get so much less efficient after a few hrs racing, no matter how well I fuel.
Very interesting and informative. Fuelling isn't rocket science after all, still so many people f it up repeatedly... I'd say put this video on repeat until you get it right.
Carb is carb.. as long as its two parts Maltodextin/normal Sugar for one part Lactose its all good. The more fancy stuff is included the less the body can actually adsorb it. You will just have expensive piss
I wonder why MVP wouldn't sit down and explain it. If he is an owner/investor in the company, it's nothing but good for him. Doesn't seem like a secretive guy with all his data up on Strava. Maybe no one has asked him. Jesse, reach out and do a video with him :)
Eating a lot from the start makes sense. He wants to save as much glycogen as possible and solid foods like rice cakes, some pastry and bars they will fuel him even hours later until it's fully digested.. After that when he goes full gas he can stomach only liquid/gel energy and I think that they use ketones as well. So they have two sources of energy ketones and glucose..
These riders do sugar free. Keto FTW! Body has no need for sugar. You get a spike then crash. Keto is best. Starting the race with no glycogen for Max power.
100% bungled it, but if he wanted to win, that's what he needed to do. If he jumped when MVDP kicked he would have lost anyway, he needed to be in the draft of MVDP and then try to come around. But that mean't he got boxed in... so from purely a win or nothing mentality he was screwed either way, well played by VDP
When he didnt drop VDP on the last "climb" he had already lost and should just hold down steady power to get 2. But a second place doesnt mean anything for pogachar so he wanted to take a big risk to maby win, if super lucky.
I don't know...why would he hide fueling plan? It's quite personal thing how your body is fueled for the best result. Every single one of pro tour athletes have the best possible knowledge available for their diet planning and you can't just copy others plans. I think he already shares he's rides to strava so race diet shouldn't be biggie if someone has a way to ask it from him
Very good video. Unfortunately this nutrition strategy is for winning races at an early age rather than being healthy. This is shoking your body to beyond limits. As you age, you need to adjust your strategy with a different strategy. No wonder many have health issues.
It's the only way for glucose to do its job and for that great insulin stimulation with its powerful inotropic effect to help the heart, tips 🤫 That’s real reason 😉👨⚕️

Agree - rice cake I reckon
Or maybe a stroopwaffle

I was also wondering what that could be. My first thought was ketones esters, but I think they'd make more sense early (assuming they work).

bc they're genetic freaks + ped's
Its genetics aswell, sure other wt pros cant even keep up lol
@@IJoAnZI Genetics for sure, but also gut training to be able to absorb carbs fast and not run into gut issues mid race.
When I used to race in Italy that smiley face was code for a line of coke, I always had 3 smiles on my stem.
Mario Cipollini approves
Imagining that van der Poel does my sweet spot as active recovery is just mindblowing.
Great content Jesse. Interesting to hear what you can understand just from stem notes.

Brilliant breakdown of race fueling. Can we get a race tactics review for the final 1k?
Great investigative work (and explanation)… 😎… You gonna review the 4Gold stuff in the future??

nice breakdown (would be interesting what the circles and the smiley really are)
THE JUICE BAR! LITERALLY
Brilliant breakdown , shows how fanatic the pros about there carb intake , and no wonder with those power number ,

Thanks for the breakdown!
This is very very helpful
Nice analysis and explanation.
I’m one of those that f it up. On Saturday 100k mixed surface I blew up about 70k. Carbs per hour
My thought would be the circles are stroopwaffles
Ricepap is also a classic.
All those dry as hell energy bars at the start of the race...could those blue circles be as simple as straight water?
Awesome. Very interesting thanks
Mathieu is amazing. I just hope he is clean. I will be very disillusioned if not.

Blue circles at start will be rice cakes so likely 120g per hour throughout
Quality content!

It was an awesome race. Pogachar kinda messed up a little. he should've got second place.

He figured it out in 2023.
Interesting!
You might have to ask jay what the items are in the first 100k
😊FINISHING BOTTLE 72 TO GO , nothing like pain killers to bring ya back BRAND NEW ,😊
Circle could be caffeine tabs?
Maybe rice cakes??
Too early in the race for caffeine.. would taking 1h30min to the last hour for caffeine, to get the best performance of it .
The blue dot could be water maybe?

I'm guessing a bidon with Natrium Bicarbonate but could be something else
It’s amazing how pros eat this and don’t get fat, every time I eat like this I gain 7-10 lb in 1 day
Bi carb soda?
good
What are those extra sections you have on the Strava site with NP and FTP?
Sauce for Strava m8
I would imagine his carb bottles are closer to 60-80 grams, not 45
don't forget the pre race PEDs cycle
Circles are sugar. U would want to start with this along with carbs
sugars are carbs :P
Circles for Rice cakes?
Yep
I wish journalists could ask MVDP and cyclists about these, far more interesting than the standard questions
Not allowed to say the word sugar on live TV. Look how rarely you hear that word on TV etc. They say "nutrition" lol.
Smiley face , thats easy it's the Nutella sandwich 😁
Maybe maybe maybe maybe maybe maybe

No pidginwraps 🤫

Yellow bottle obviously means urine.
Without a doubt
thats a lot of bar, feeling full just to think of it..
round maby rice cake
200 km mark, ecstasy pill and "Jesus loves the acid" in the earphones, the win is guaranteed
The blue crikels are hamburgers, he loves hamburgers. Just 3 of them will be just enough for the whole race. 🍔🍔🍔 🙈
Pill of ecstasy at the 200th kilometre…. Nice
Circles = pizzas, yeah?
The blue cirkles are burgers......hahaha
During and after the race......
I dunno, consuming all those carbs will lead him to obesity and diabetes.
🤡
stupid comment
The fat in the carbs are what would be bad for him not to mention all that caffeine.

yeah ofcourse he is burning almost 8000 or more kcals a day
