- Memorial Day Weekend 2017 - the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia hosted an old patron for a total of six excursions. Norfolk and Western 611 closes out her third operating season in the 21st Century with trips over home rails between her birthplace in Roanoke, Lynchburg in the east, and Walton in the west. Whether it was trackside or within the dome car, the occasion was not to be missed.

It's sad that N&W A class 2-6-6-4 #1218 missed out on the 2017 NS Steam Excursion with N&W J class 4-8-4 #611. Just like the glory days of the NS Steam Program 25 years earlier.
Mabry Anderson The old program would run 30 trips a year, sometimes two in a different location each weekend. Now it's a group running eight trips a year. There's no reason to spend another million dollars on another engine when there's things like insurance and proper housing for 611 to spend on instead. Restoring a second engine does not double your ticket sales, it only doubles the expense.
Sure is a shame, my friend... Maybe someday the opportunity will arise for 1218 to be put back into service as well!
Any chance of 611 coming north to ohio next season?
