- Billy Joel sings "Summer, Highland Falls" at Farm Aid in Champaign, Illinois on September 22, 1985.
A performance from the first Farm Aid benefit concert. Willie Nelson, Neil Young and John Mellencamp founded Farm Aid and serve on the board of directors. The three agreed that family farmers were in dire need of assistance and decided to plan a concert for America. The show was put together in six weeks and was held on September 22, 1985 in Champaign, Illinois before a crowd of 80,000 people. It raised over $9 million for America's family farmers. Performers included Bob Dylan, Billy Joel, B.B. King, Loretta Lynn, Roy Orbison, Tom Petty and many more.
Dave Matthews joined Farm Aid's Board of Directors in 2001 to help further Farm Aid's mission of keeping family farmers on their land.

Thank you Billy Joel for supporting the American farmers
I just found this song I had never heard this one ever but I'm currently obsessed
You do know Highland Falls is a real town. Billy wrote it one summer, before he had any fame
It's on the album "Turnstiles," which most of his fans consider his best album overall (though not as famous as "Stranger" or even "Piano Man."
If you like this, you should check out the rest of the songs from the album.
I love Billy’s music so much rn, he is definitely the best singer
Amazing, he doesn't even need to look at the damn keys once lol master
Neither does Stevie Wonder it's called muscle memory
@@JerryT21 Stevie Wonder never looked at those keys
@@matteorotelli4693 What stevie has accomplished without ever looking at the keys is incredible, truly a master at what he does
BJ at the height of his vocal prowess. Good stuff.
With all due respect I disagree. He was a more pure tenor at this point but I think he was at his vocal heights in 90s-early 2000s. He still had the vocal range he exhibits here PLUS an emotional pain in his voice that only the greatest of singers had (Ray Charles, Judy Garland, Edith Piaf). ALL ABOUT SOUL is one of the top 10 vocal performances ever recorded, imo. Technique combined with feeling.
Lynn Turman hey Lynn sorry I’m late. I’m going to have to agree and agree. I think he was his best vocals when he made songs in the attic. But yes the mid to late 90s were when he really got his raspiness and experience in his voice that I just love. River of dreams also just such good singing
I’ve always felt that his singing voice was SEVERELY underrated
@@lynnturman8157 I’m even more late, but this is NOT a pure tenor Billy Joel as you just said, his voice was clearer and more tenor-esque earlier in his carrer in the 70s and his throat didn’t get strained nor closed when he tried to reach higher notes
I like his strong vocals in the storm front album.
Such an underrated song.
This is when America wasn't Red or Blue. It was red, white, and blue. Sadly, we'll never get that back.
Keep the faith and if you can’t share it…
I was 17 then and had No idea how good things were
Same.
Same here ❤️✌🏻
A timeless song that shines with the depth of it's wisdom on the human condition. "It's either sadness or euphoria."
He still had that young voice in 1985.
before the drinking started in 90s
I'm gonna go out on a limb here and suggest it started quite a bit earlier than that. :)
that kermit the frog voice
@@ukno918 huh? He has a great voice when younger
He still has a great voice
Wow, FarmAid. Remember watching this as a kid.
Billy's expressions are hilarious 😂. I've seen him live and he's fantastic ❤
His voice sounds really good here. Without looking at the video, it sounds like this was recorded live back in the mid-70's.
You were about 10 years off. 1985
My very favorite Billy song.
He always looks out to look on his audience. Always connecting.
Yeah, people are actually "talking to" a sound guy who mixed this 28 years ago, hoping he'll go back and balance out the mix.
In fairness 28 years is plenty of time to get it done lol.
Awesome vocal. Unpretentious stuff.
Oh my gosh, thanx so much for uploading this. One of my very fav BJ songs. His voice was stellar.
one of my favorite Billy Joel songs
Big Billy Joel fan and just loved this song
Thank you
His voice was fantastic in every era. Almost angelic in his youth. Opinion varies on the best era.
Can we agree that this might have been his best era for hair?
Cold Spring Harbor's was his best hair era, in my opinion. Though there's so little documentation it's hard to confidently say.
I SOOO miss Liberty at the drums. He was a huge part of what made those recordings great. Makes me very sad (and bitter) that they haven't found a way to reunite.
They made up, thankfully. I wish he was playing for him again though.
Billy at his finest - incredible song and one of my faves!
absolutely a fantastic song. It amazes me how easy it seems, play the piano and singing at the same time cause thats highclass stuff. His voice sounds great and spot on
Such a clean voice.
What an amazing song this is and still relevant to our struggle for our humanity.
My favorite tune of his
Hard to sing this one - even for the composer and stellar COMPETENCY OF THE MAN HIMSELF ..... strident pace and runs on the keyboard as well as touch on the vocal !!! Love this song above all his others !!! GBjj
Brilliant songwriting! Billy is destined to be the next Great American Songbook!
Dude. Willy introing Billy?! Legendary.
I was there. It was an awesome 12 hours. You just needed to survive the rain. The only bad part was how Joni Mitchell was disrespected by the audience who were too young to know who she was.
a legend introducing a legend!!! massively good stuff!
love the song
LOOOOOOVE the song. It is brilliant.
Yes actually the whole album is brilliant
I. Love. This. Song.
And you can barely hear the piano b/c the Farm Aid sound guys could give a fuck about the piano. It's all about guitar, bass & drums. Love how the piano is always an afterthought, yet every band always wants a keys player to do the fancy shit a guitar player can't do. Glad we're good for something.
he is the best.
Sign of the times
So depressing to see what live popular music has become today compared to this
Amen! Music today can't hold a candle to this!
i remember this in middle school... wow
Il migliore anche questa volta .....
wow i had this vhs my old man record country western off fm radio record video from vhs,
Your music is still hot and can be heard
Fantástico. Genial
Brilliance
yeah make sure the mix has billys piano really really low.
Bravo !
"..... it's either sadness or euphoria " . I saw the first episode of " Black Box " - it was pretty cool . I was also very happy that it's not a carbon copy of another two of my favorite shows , " Monk " and " Perception " . It's worth checking out ( the graphics of the Dr.'s hallucinations are really pretty ) .
0:02 Willie Neslooooooooooooonnnnnnnn .....=))))))
I'm just here because of a HONY story and I couldn't remember this song even though I'm from the era
Same
Yiu can see Billy is not sure about his From the Heart piano ballad with that fest croud. But I appreciate it!!!
Bad Mix, you can't hear Billy's piano and the bass is too dominant, more piano, less bass bro
Best
BJ channels Jackson Browne’s “These Days” in all it’s melancholy.
More cowbell!!! Was BJ actually playing piano?!?! Hello, we should be able to hear it I’m thinking, in certain
oh my God...
I think you are referring to the higher notes that you do not see him playing...that's because he's using his RIGHT hand. And it's not in the shot. SO yes, he IS playing.
@RayRoyRandrew He's always been one of my favorites. Him and Billy need to make up and get on with making some new material.
Is this available in HQ stereo sound? I'll bet it sounds way better in stereo. If it's not available in stereo, this source will be perfect to digitally remaster to dolby 5.1 surround sound and undo the distortions in the sound
It's so poignant right now in 2020.
Could someone please pull up the keyboards?
This was before his voice began to fail him
What are you talking about? Up to his final album, his voice developed maturely, just like his music.
@@howtodoitdude1662 I don’t know how to explain it but the clearness on his voice started to fade away and his voice somehow sounded strained or something, it’s hard to explain
Can barely hear his piano
He’s about half drunk. Still sounds pretty good though…
what do you mean, "he's not playing"?
wow he was cute back then.. looks like billie joe armstrong.. i wanted to marry him back then and was very upset when he married christie brinkley.. haha.. now there is another rock star i want to marry.. but that's a secret..
Hands up everyone here because of Santa?
he looks like he's either really bored or half drunk. Still sounds good, either way
He's probably looking around for someone because he can't hear himself.
I think he probably felt a bit self-conscious and out of place under the circumstances and just did it as a favour to John Mellencamp, but probably went a bit OTT in the modesty stakes.
@@amazed66 also back then he was getting ripped off left right and centre. He was supposed to be rich but wasn't yet.
Great track.
Does anyone know who the drummer is?
Previously long-time band member Liberty Devitto, although he's not in Billy's current band now though.
He's a great drummer
Somebody fire the sound man.
Billy is a solo artist. He only tolerates the band around him. This video makes that obvious.
Well many of them on stage with him here, he "tolerated" for 25 to 30 years.
Great song...but a bit awkward choice in a stadium.... quiet, low key...and the sound didn't help much either. Great song though.
For this occasion it’s a little bit of an odd choice. It sounds amazing live but there’s certainly other ones that would’ve fit a little better
@jonathanbirch2022 I guess because singing about the plight of unemployed Steel workers in Pennsylvania kinda takes away from the focus of what they were there raising money for...farmers who were losing they're farms and homes.
@jonathanbirch2022 I dont know....At Live Aid, Dylan, while on stage, suggested giving some of the money they raised to the American farmers who were struggling in addition to famine relief in Africa and was roumdly criticized for it...that statement by Bob actually spearheaded the idea for Farm Aid....Billy probably didn't want to highlight one issue (unemployed Steel workers) by playing "Allentown" at the expense of taking away the focus of what they were trying to do that night for farmers in America, that's my guess.
Song name?
Summer, Highland Falls
Corona mixtape
Too fast
So much truth to this song. Such a horrible sound man, though.
Is it ok if I say God bless UA-cam?
