Well done for rescuing the photo albums. I too think it so sad that these photos are no longer with their families. Having done some family history research myself I know that having photos to put with the names is wonderful.
Thank you again my friend for another fascinating adventure. I have been in hospital for five months, and your videos have been a constant comfort for which I am vey grateful.
I love the way you include clips of ducks, geese, swans, and gulls. I always enjoy your videos. The history lessons are delightful and your materials and comfortable presentation before the camera keep bringing me back for more. I hope your Easter was happy!
Hi Nicola, what a splendid toque! Loved the little dove ring, and as always, loved seeing you and one of your excellent videos. Your efforts in producing them are greatly appreciated. It's been 6 months since my heart attacks and stroke, I'm going to celebrate my progressive recovery by spending some time out in the sunshine, with my bonsai trees. Thanks for getting my day off to an inspiring start! Love and hugs from Vancouver Island ❤
Hello Pamela, I'm so glad that you are recovering well. yes, get outside in the sunshine and spoil yourself with a nice cake and tea whilst watching the world go by! Sending you love and hugs. Nicola
i sometimes ask about things if they are really old or have a history i am interested in even if i don't buy them. it's just fun to hear about them. my mom once got me a 1950's doll from a guy who's wife used to own it before she passed away. he didn't know much other than the type of doll and what year it was made.
I've been rescuing old albums for 20 years now Nicola! So glad to hear you did that. I find the families descendants on my ancestry account. I also add the photos on Find-A-Grave.
i have a family member that collects them and records the history of the family in them then logs them in a room she has in her home like they are books. some people donate them to her and tell her everything they know about the family in the photos. she collects the ones from local families to keep up with the history. it was how i found out i was related to one of the first families to settle in my town i currently live in and that i have a really distant family member from way back then with the same last name as my friend's who's entire family is from this town. there's a chance i am very distantly related to himin some way which would mean my other friend who's his distant cousin could also be related to me in some way. rescuing old albums is why a lot of families find new family members they didn't know they had or could possibly have.
Well Nicola, I am not so sure about those doll heads! They scare me. I never had a doll growing up. It's funny because my two older sisters had dolls and clothes and their own carrying cases and once I, the third daughter came along, no more dolls. But I loved the clay pipes overload - that had me tickled pink along with your pottery shards! What a great day out! I loved seeing your daughter Grace. She is beautiful, just like your son! 🐥♥️🐤
Nicola thank and thank Simon for this wonderful video. When the two of you work together you always find some great historic treasures. By showing them and explaining what they are and how they were used is very informative. I'm older than you, but I'm still learning new things every day, and with your help you provide a venue of expansive intelligence. Cheers!
I just want to drope a note from the US. I am recovering from lukemia and a bone marrow transplant, which means alot of tv. I stumbled on your page, and im hooked, and the water sounds and birds. It is very calming.. now then, thank you for putting this out.. i have learned so much!!
Always fascinated by the pipes, seals, jewelry and bits & bobs that catch your eye -- and at the same time my eye is caught by the more industrial items (chains, tools, etc.) that you normally don't pick up. If I were there I could probably spend hours in a 6-foot by 6-foot square!!! And of course great to see you with Simon!
Your daughter is lovely!! You are much too young having children that have a little age on them! And I know you have a much older son. Such a lovely visit to the foreshore. Always love an episode when you and Si Finds collaborate. Oh, you're going to Chicago! I grew up near there and it is, for the most part, a lovely city. Wonderful museums. Fabulous restaurants, especially Italian. The lake is phenomenal and very cold. I never found bottles or other things in it, but I did find fossil remnants of coral, Petoskey stones, and circular remnants of crinoids we used to call wampum (it wasn't truly wampum). I did live across the street from an old home where the occupants threw their trash on the side of a hill. I had a good time sorting through that, but I think it was a bit dangerous, rusty tin cans and all. The woman who lived in the house would fuss at me if she caught me but I didn't care!
I absolutely adore old photographs. Just imagining the lives the people were living and what they were up to. Loved your dolls head and all you other finds. Thank you.
Thank you and happy Easter to you. I enjoyed the doll head, when she came out of the mud, I thought she looked angry with mud. And at the end when she got all clean and spooky-loved, she looked fulfilled at last.
Fab video Nicola. So kind of Sci to give you That gorgeous bowl. I can imagine hyacinths in it. That doll ! Yes please research those pics, I totally understand why you want to research those stories. I have my grandparents pics of their time in Egypt in the 30's and they are fascinating! Grace is as beautiful as her mother, it's so good to spend time with our student children. Belated Happy Easter x
Love the ring. Please do share the meet-up details if you do one. I'll probably never make it to the Thames, but would love to hear stories from you in person.
Happy Easter!!! YES!!! URBAN MUDLARKING!! I enjoy a channel called Paper and Moose, and she does rescue many old photo albums and researches who they are and what they did. She especially loves WWII Era stories. She would love your creepy doll lamp, as she loves Halloween, clowns, and has a group of "Isle of Lost Toys" she can't leave behind at auctions! She(Renee ) could be your sister in spirit!! Stay well!!🥰🥰🥰
Lovely to see Grace again & that you and Si had a grat mudlarking. Funny that you also bought photographs at the Deptford flea market - so did I and I've been looking for the lady in my English photographs ever since - tried Flikr, no luck.... ps I 💗 your dolls head lamp - you should see the ones they have at Cafe Bankeråt in Copenhagen (I'll send you a photo)😂
Thank you Nicola for a great video on your recent finds. I would have loved doing that many many years ago. To see the River Thames again is a great memory of all those years ago. I left London in 1971 and have lived in Australia since then. If only we could start again, you😊 seem to have a great life, Thankyou once again Nicole and enjoy your time in Dorset.
Hi Nicola Happy Easter your looking Gorgeous Today and nice to see Si and your Daughter Grace, Your Urban Mudlarking is a great idea and i would like to see what you find also it is nice to have some history to go with your finds. I know Deptford well i used to live there until i was 8 yrs old then ventured east to Greenwich, Deptford high street was my favourite Saturday shopping day i went with my nan helped carry bags then Goddards Pie n Mash shop occasionally to Manzes Pie n Mash n Liquor Jellied eel's Those were the day's LOL .I look forward to your Urban Mudlarking video's i like Old things and the history behind them it's a never ending reality but i dont think in the next 100 yrs it will be as interesting as most things found then will be Plastic, Glass not as unusual lots of the same, Pottery is sort of the same Chugging out of factory's by the Thousands not as interesting, Nowadays as a lot of old pottery is by hand and designs painted on or crafted is so much more satisfying to hold and see craftsmanship of years gone by. Sorry for the book Nicola wishing you and your Daughter and Si a Happy Easter to you all take care God Bless. Gerry
Happy Easter, Nicola! I hope you enjoyed a lovely holiday visiting with Grace. I remember her being a teenager just a few years ago, and now she's a lovely young woman, even if a cheeky one! As always, some brilliant finds and great seeing you out with Simon. Enjoy your trip to Chicago in a few weeks. Pity it's almost 2 000 kms away, or I'd defnitely be up for a meet-up. Please travel safely.
Hello from Brisbane Nicola. Thanks for another great video. I share your obsession for old photo albums and purchased quite a few from my local flea market when I lived in Tokyo. My favourite contained many 'artistic' shots of people, villages and the countryside. In a few, a shadow gave me a hint of the photographers identity. Near the end I discovered a wonderful photo of a young boy standing proudly next to his camera mounted on a tripod. He was wearing western clothing which along with the camera suggest the album was from the 1920s.
I know I've said it before but Grace is an absolute beauty!!! I love the photo albums you rescued! Wish I lived closer to Chicago, would be awesome to meet you!❤
Hi Nicola, from Rockhampton Queensland! I do very much enjoy your content! April 1st '24 My great great great grandmother was from London, emigrating with her German husband, to South Australia in the 1830's; she may have been a mudlarker in her childhood days!
Thank you. You find the dove ring was perfect as I'm watching this on Easter, I really needed that sign. My oldest son was one in the hospital at Easter and a dove flew on the window casing, I really needed that sign.
I’m always so sad when I see old photo albums for sale. My husband has put copies of ours on a hard drive and given them to family in case our albums get sold after our passing. I learn so much history from you and Si. Happy Easter.
Happy Easter, Nicola and Grace! Great finds with Si Finds! So many pipes in one spot! Wow!! I feel the same about the photos. It is a shame there was no one to pass them on to!
Lovely video, as always, Nicola - thank you! I was secretly hoping for a visit from Mr. Squirrel, but Grace filled in nicely for him. Good thing you keep Easter eggs as well as nuts on hand... 😁 It's always fun to see Si join you on the Thames. That little clay pipe cache he found was amazing! I hope your Easter was wonderful. 🐣🐰 Thanks again!
Would love to see urban mudlarking videos. Have you ever checked out Paper and Moose she loves picking up paper ephemera and researching the history of the people in pictures she finds.
You know, I think I could watch that trowel scraping around on the foreshore for hours, even if you never found a thing! In fact, a trowel scraping video would be nice to have for meditation, or even relaxing into sleep. I wonder if the searching works that way for you. I hope so. Not to slight the finds or the repurposing or the history or the chocolate eggs or the smiles or the cheerful wishes, and now and then a stray relative or squirrel. Good wishes right back to you.
Happy Easter hunny bunny 😂 Thank you for the wonderful video. You two (Si and Nic) seem to have such a nice and easy friendship. It is good to see in these stressful times. ❤️
The large egg actually sounds to me like a small aerosol can of paint that has a metal bead inside to facilitate mixing. Here in the US some call them rattle cans.
Happy Easter from Milwaukie , Oregon USA. Lovely show and fun to see your beautiful daughter! I do enjoy your shows, especially when you have your great mudlarking friends on
just this morning I was wondering when U & Si would have another lark together. great finds. i enjoy the shard's w/stories too. please share your urban larks. thanx
Hi I was watching you & Mud Bagger & lusting after the glass everywhere! You both stepped over a couple pieces of red I would love to find! We have some of you delightful “found” glass fish & have been collecting similar glass along the shores of Lake Superior but, the reds are nearly impossible to find… so we use agate chips & watch your scavenging! Keep up the good work!
It's always interesting to see what you find on the foreshore. I like doing searches to see if I can find more about some of your unidentified finds. I appreciate the transferware pictures on a neutral background, it makes it much easier to do a reverse image search. Sadly, I wasn't able to find either this time. The red looks very similar to a Masons ironstone pattern called Vista, but not quite. The blue had so many different makers with similar patterns. Maybe next time 😉
Well done Nicola for collecting the photo albums. I also have picked up a couple, years ago. The children's photos tell us so much about their lives and the social history of the time. one album of mine has the babies with a nursing nanny and young children with a different Nanny. There maybe something to go by to research but i think there are only Christian names . It is sad that these photos are no longer with their families. i have photos of my family taken from 1883. I love it. in Multi picture frames in my hall. Thank you , I just love watching you and SI as i am not very mobile. Marie from Bournemouth,
Always a pleasure to mudlark with you mud buddy! 👍🏻🐾🧡
love when you two get together. mind you that doll lamp is the stuff of nightmares
I want to ask you guys a question, what do you do with your finds?
Muddy Buddy❤
I get very exciting when you and Si are together. You guys have great chemistry together!
Well done for rescuing the photo albums. I too think it so sad that these photos are no longer with their families. Having done some family history research myself I know that having photos to put with the names is wonderful.
I agree I have gone back to 1400 on my husband’s side and the 1600 on my father’s side family is everything to me.

Marie from Bournemouth,
Thank you. Im so glad you enjoy the videos. Much love, Nicola
