    The helicopter at 20:00 was New York Airways, providing passenger chopper service between various NY airports & Manhattan, we flew on them in late 1960s.

    Travelled San Francisco to Nadi (Fiji) on a BA 707 in late December 67.
    Remember those noise suppressors on the engines. Was nice to see RR on the nacelles after 3 weeks of Pratt and Whitney.
    Doubt I'd feel the same way now with the dodgy engineering on RR kit.
    Ice blockage in fuel system on BA at LHR and burst oil pipe just out of S'pore on Aantas.

      The term most often used when I was flying frequently was COACH. Even so, it was not like today. Depending on the airlines, you could compare it to first class today, and you were never treated badly. Food was good, things like a soda was free, as was carry-on. Though back then most people just carried the small airline branded, carryall bag, or a grip for men and an overnight bag for ladies.

    Great footage with very exciting video with real jetliners... No doubt a far more enjoyable era, for today a simple good morning and a touch on the shoulder could easily land you in a sexual harassment lawsuit with one of the modern pimp lawyers and the today's radical feminist sexual harassment lawsuit payoff predators.

    The Vickers VC10 was my favourite airliner when I was a kid...Great to see, even if it was a gas guzzler, I love the Johnny Dankworth score too!

    I flew VC-10s on EAST AFRICAN AIRWAYS From Heathrow to Nairobi several times, with a plane full of expats. Marvellous plane. Before that, I flew on a Comet 4 (Sept 1 1963) to Nairobi.

    Wonderful video, and a pleasent trip down the corridors of fond memories. I flew BOAC more often then not, followed by PANAM and a smattering of other airlines. All types of aircraft, from prop, turbo prop, and the full range of Boeing jets, with BEA's Tridents, and Caravelles of SAS, and the best of all them was the VC-10, and SUPER VC-10 of BOAC.

    I remember these flying out of Chicago O'Hare for London in the late 60's. Man, those planes engines would really scream on takeoff. You knew what it was before you even saw it!

    I worked at JFK back then and I remember thewonderful crackle of the Super VC-10 leaving BOAC was right next to us...VARIG... so it was a familiar bird. It could get off using less runway then theDC-8s and 707s. I dont know its cruise sped but I saw Mach .83 in a BOAC 707 while sitting in its right seat. At the time I was with a 3rd level scheduled air taxi.We flew De Havilland Doves from varoius New England cities to LGA. Got invited up front. Things were different ,AND BETTER,back then.

      There used to be a lot of high quality capital locked up in the airline system 50 years ago. But, TPTB planned out how to strip out everything and leave just enough to move the cattle about. The balance of the stolen capital was sent to Wall Street, City of London, and the usual suspects.

      All the security and wasted hours exists purely to show dominance. Plus, so much propaganda and political capital is locked up in the terrorist narrative that TPTB cannot back out from it. Give the American slaves some of their freedom back and the Sheeple will demand more freedoms to be restored.
      TPTB have spend decades getting us accustomed to this degraded and degenerate state and they are not about to give our freedoms and status back. .................. not until wholesale summary executions of our ruling and financial elites takes place.

      Relaxed? Nah, it was still very formal & only upper & middle classes flew then as it was still a luxury & out of the pocket for Fred Smith. In the 1970s I flew on the RAF Vicky's being in the Army & my very first flying was 1971 Brize Norton in a VC10. I flew my first easyJet & it was awful, terrible landings & take offs & more room on a town bus.

    Ah the Boeing only aircraft company, they fully specified rxactly what they wanted the VC 10 to be, then when it was delivered didnt want it, placed no more orders.
    Apparently the ten was a superb aircraft, quiet, powerful, huge lift from those swept back wings, but expensive to operate .

    In 1960, The British Regulator refused to register new BOAC s 707-400s unless certain handling modifications were made. (Including the well-known ventral fin)
    Boeing made the modifications and continued with the modifications on non-BOAC 707-400s including retrofitting ones already in service.

    2024: * Sat in a very small seat, hungry, bankrupt by the cost of his ticket, waiting for the „Personal device and WiFi” light to come on… * 📱💸🙃
    But out of curiosity (And to those who flew with BOAC): Were cigarettes a mostly complimentary item back in those days, or would they still have to be paid for separately? (As would be the case today, if smoking was still allowed on board. 😇)

      Today's economy class should be put in travel cages before loading them onboard. The higher classes are potty trained (usually) and don't need to be in cages.

    The VC10 was also fast but thirsty. I remember flying to the States 20 years ago from Brize to Washington and the captain said if you look out of the window now you'll notice how slow that Airbus is travelling. ;-)

    To Tokio via Frankfurt and other places but we see the Coliseum of Rome - the Victoria Falls and Rangoon gets a mention too.
    I suspect errors on the cutting room floor or very poor navigation.

    This all so twee and charming. Everyone so polite and well-dressed. Nowadays, it's drunken, tattooed, overweight chavs in cheap sports leisurewear throwing their considerable weight around and entitled Karens causing flights to be de-boarded, as tired and frustrated ground and flight crews quit in their hundreds. The Friendly Skies. Riiight...

      sure, all tail-engined planes are noisy near the engines, mainly because of the gears inside, whose vibrations transmit right into the cabin.

    The Speys used on the BAC 1-11 were definitely louder than the Conways of the VC-10. However, the VC-10 had four engines and the 1-11 only had two.
    However, the Trident had THREE Speys and I always think that the Trident was perhaps the loudest subsonic airliner of its day.

    The gorgeous British VC-10 I can see where Gerry Anderson got his idea for fireflash ,why did BOAC publicly harm the aircraft it could of found a market along side the 707 and in the design stage was a double deck VC-10 imagine that

      The VC10 harmed itself. It had an excellent short field performance because when it was specified, BOAC slated it for use at hot and high airports on their African routes. Some of those airports had fairly short runways so the VC10 was designed to be able to get in and out of those airports. What BOAC and Vickers didn't expect was that those airports would be modified to accept the more "normal" performing 707s and DC-8s so all that extra performance was not really needed. And the great take off performance came at a cost in economics of operation.

    Pilots I spoke with had good things to say about the VC-10. Unfortunately I never got to fly on one myself. If I remember correctly, the VC-10 was the very first airliner to be landed automatically by a remote control system in 1969.

    That VC-10 was among the loudest, perhaps the loudest, aircraft ever put into commercial service.
    The BAC 1-11 was another plane with that crackling, very deafening roar of a jet noise.
    However, the noise of a 707 taking off is something I could bear. Definitely not as loud as the other two.
    I miss all of these aircraft though.

      What you probably don't know -no offence to you meant- is that both the VC10, the Trident and the BAC 1-11 were exceedingly quiet INSIDE. Which really did matter to passengers and made a world of difference, esp. when flying long distance. Yes, granted, they were super noisy outside, but so were ALL jets back then. The B707, however classy and gracious, was not only noisy outside, but also inside!!..ohh, those rattly Boeing panels... anyone remembers those?? British built jets felt so solid and rattle free instead...

      I flew on one in 1972 from new York to London and I don't recall it being loud.
      I find Boeing 777s loud.

    I flew a hushkitted BOAC B707 from San Francisco to Fiji in December 1967. I recall many British schoolchildren on board going to join families for Christmas in Fiji. Don't recall it being that formal.

    Loved flying First Class back then (still do but certainly not even close to the same except Internationally). My favorite aircraft to fly on was the 707. It still maintains a special place in my heart. My favorite to fly today is the 747 and so happy that Lufthansa still flys them. Sadly, though, BA inflight service has taken a nose dive and IMHO, I’ve come to think of BA as ... Best Avoided. 😕

      They also loaded an elephant at 5:15-25! (The crate looked very small but you can't have an elephant moving and shifting weight in cargo. Hope they restrained the crate well. -- Also hope it wasn't too long a flight for that elephant!

    That makes sense, sort of like the old DC-9 except bigger ,faster more fun to watch...lol Worst airliner I ever rode in was was Vickers VANGUARD. noisy,vibrating buzzy. set yer teeth on edge . It was on Air Canada Montreal to N.Y. So different than the Vicount which was none of those things.

      They (VC10) flew with the RAF untill only a few years ago, around 40yrs... That is a testimonial to British engineering!

    Later they discovered problems with the fan blades and when one engine went it would take the other with it being in close proximity along with the hydraulics. It spelled doom for the future of the VC10.

    Flew on BOAC VC-10 New York to London and 707 Montreal to Manchester via Prestwick. Still remember the delicious strawberry tart in the early 70s.

    Good ole BOAC, and the 707 as a young child I'd fly alone to spend the summer with my father in London, and I used to take BOAC 707 jet service and was treated like a king flying alone, the air hostess as they were called looked after me as if I was one of thier children.

    The Rolls-Royce Conway was the world's first bypass turbofan engine. Not only did BOAC use it on its 707s and VC-10s, but Air Canada and Canadian Pacific Airlines used it on their Douglas DC-8s.

      @@barracuda7018 The Conway was the first bypass jet to be used on an airliner. As has been said, it was a low bypass engine. The Pratt and Whitney JT3D used on most 707s and DC-8s were also low bypass.

      @@barracuda7018 That was a later generation. GE and PW developed their high bypass turbofans as part of the bid for the USAF large military transport - which became the C5 Galaxy. Rolls Royce didn't have the luxury of a large military contract to help fund their development of large high bypass turbofans so they were operating on a slower time line. They also hampered themselves by trying to use carbon fibre for the fan blades, which nearly put them under. However, their engine, the RB211 eventually turned out to be an excellent engine and both Boeing, Douglas and Lockheed all offered the RB211 as an engine option on their wide bodies.
      The Conway was used on the VC-10, 707, DC-8, Nimrod and Victor so it was a successful and good engine in its own right. However, its roots dated back to the late 1940s so was a very early jet which, by the mid 1960s, was being outperformed by later designs.

      That was a 747, Japan Airlines Flight 123.JAL never operated the 707 aircraft.

      It was a BOAC flight 911. The James Bond film crew missed that flight because they wanted to see some Ninja fight or something else. It crashed on the fifth of March 1966.
      It was registered G-APFE
      The 747 crashed in the 90s if my memory serves me right.

      Cheap flights gives you a cheap standard. Ive flew easyJet Edinburgh - Bristol for £44 return, but 55mins was too long in cramped seating. Can't imagine doing 3 hours or more.

    I'm amazed that BOAC wasted so much time and money on those obsolete old British jets. The damn things were out of date when they were rolling off the assembly line.

      The problem with the VC-10 was not that it was obsolete. In fact, it's performance exceeded the 707 and DC-8 in many areas. However, the great performance meant its seat per mile costs were higher, making it less attractive commercially. Technically, it was very advanced for its time.

      You are obviously miss informed, or should I say.. Talking shit. The VC (after concorde) was the fasted Airliner in the world and far ahead of its time. It was still flying with the Royal airforce until around 2010.

    I remember being fascinated by the daisy shaped exhaust of the BOAC 707 as a child. I remember getting off the plane as a child and I wanted to run behind the engine to check it out, but of course they wouldn't let me.

      I was 14 on my first 707-138 flight. Point of interest was the Pratt decal on the nacelle “Dependable Aircraft Engines” under the eagle. And the blue fug of ciggy haze down the cabin. And Qantas service way, way back in the day. Attractive stewardesses loving their job.

      The VC-10 had a serious range problem in addition to the incredible fuel usage. It was an excellent aircraft for trips to the commonwealth countries in Africa. It could use non concrete/asphalt runways, it was fine for some African hot and high airports, but it didn't sell very well because it wasn't as large as it's competition (DC-8, 707) and in many cases it was considered underpowered. Later on the three engine aircraft had superior range and fuel economy, like the L-1011 and DC-10.
      It was indeed LOUD, and that appeals to aviation nuts like myself, the roar sounds cool to me.

      Bobby Paluga As you say, the VC-10 was designed primarily with one customer in mind (BOAC,) to fulfill their order to fly from hot and high airports. I don't think it was underpowered; the problem was it was was too thirsty. By the time it was delivered, many of the airports that it was designed specially for (typically in Africa) had further developed their airports and having "hot and high" specialized aircraft was redundant when the B707 and DC-8 could now operate without restrictions thanks to longer and improved runways, etc. Unlike the B707, the VC-10 was limited in the improvements that could be made to the airframe and engines, and without sales, of course, further development meant improvements required resources that Vickers didn't have. BUT...by all accounts, the VC-10 was a passenger-friendly and comfortable airliner, if nothing else because of the engines being at the tail. My father flew a VC-10 from Manchester to New York/JFK as late as 1977, certainly toward the end of the VC-10 in their BOAC/British Airways career. He has fond memories of that experience! Certainly there are not many aircraft as elegant as the VC-10, but unfortunately those qualities didn't equate to sales.

      I 've also heard that their engines were fixed near the tail so they used to develop cracks, is that correct ??
