@@orochifire You reminded me, thanks. It is possible to make V read multiple passages by holding the button as he finishes reciting the previous poem (up to 2 poems I believe before he closes the book). I switched Nero's DT with Break Away and switched Devil Bringer with Devil Breaker. DMC4 was the first DMC game I really played, so I prefer the old controls to the new ones.
Man, its been years since I watched this video of yours for the first time and even now, I'm still using your control scheme for Nero and V. Great stuff this is. I did have to switch Dante's control scheme to default (but with Left/Right trigger swapped with Left/Right bumper) and learn claw gripping due to how complex Dante's kit was tho XD
Tried each of these and while they feel a bit weird, already I feel more comfortable with the customizations than even the changes I thought worked for me. I think changing them to match yours will help encourage me to become more skilled at the game, so thank you for that!

Not related to the video in general, but thank you for all these tips, I just cleared my first Bloody Palace with Nero, you’ve been a great help on my understanding of the enemies. Thank you.
Even since DMC4 I put the gun button for Nero on L1(DT on square), because it's a lot easier to hold it down for charged shots while combo-ing, while the DT activation burst I only used to avoid damage and it made more sense to me to put it on a 'panic button'
Oh Man Alan... You Are The Man ! ! ! I had a couple of buttons the same... Melee, Gun, Jump, Break Away & Lock-On but I can't wait to try ur setup, maybe I'll have an easier time...?!? Thank You So Freaking Much!!!
Dude this video is amazing! Never thought to put Trickster and Swordmaster on the buttons you did, feels so much better for the way I play. I used claw for a bit with my left hand on DMC4 but with inertia and guard-flying not being as much of a thing in past games, I wanted to ditch it (plus it hurt like hell after a while of playing haha). The Nero setup is really great, too! I've never been great at Ex/Max-Act'ing so placing it there and approaching it like a rhythm game as you pointed out has helped a bit (especially with your MAX-Act Tutorial vid which is godly btw :)) I enjoy your text videos but you have a good voice and it'd be cool if you went that way in future vids.
Your voice is cool so maybe mix with your witty text for maximer effect. Also I now realize my controls need some slight reworking because I'm not making the most of the face buttons.
There isn't a game that benefits so much from mapping the bumpers and triggers for certain moves, also fuck break-away. You don't seem to use the claw grip technique, interesting to see the optimization on the buttons to compensate
I play DMC5 on a PS4 controller w/ a Back Button Attachment. It adds an extra two buttons which will henceforth be known as LB/Left Back and RB/Right Back. R2 = Lock-on: I find it more comfortable than R1. R1 = Devil Trigger L2 = Gun: to comfortably charge everyone's ranged attacks. L1 = Exceed/Change Gun/Charge DT/Change Weapon (Left) Square = Devil Bringer/Change Sword/Change Weapon (Right) I keep 'Break Away' and 'Auto Attack' on on the D-pad. The back buttons are where things get more interesting.... - Nero - LB = Exceed: improves my timing immensely without cramping my hands from claw gripping the controller. RB = Devil Bringer: largely for holding enemies. - Dante - LB = Trickster RB = Swordmaster My go-to styles that can be switched to efficiently. - V - LB = Charge DT RB = Cane: largely to make the controlling of V's 3 demons as smoothly as possible. I don't use back buttons for Vergil. I haven't found any benefits in doing so. It's a rite of passage for experienced DMC players to customize their own control layout, I believe. Here's hoping future OFFICIAL controllers get built-in back buttons for game devs to take advantage of. Cause a game like DMC greatly benefits from those extra buttons.
4:19 That's exactly why I'm learning to claw grip the controller. It's uncomfortable as hell at first after playing games a certain way for 23 years, but being able to use all buttons freely without having to take any fingers off of the sticks makes it SO much easier. Been practicing for 2-3 months running through the BP with Nero/Dante and it feels natural at this point.
This is exactly why I have no regrets buying Razer Wildcat. underneath the controller, for easy hold: Bottom left trigger (M3) for extra devil bringer access Bottom right trigger (M4) for extra shoot extra bumpers, for easier mashing: left (M1) - another devil bringer access right (M2) - extra devil breaker access

Doing all mission with a S isn’t easy at all but thanks god i love that game so much that I can play hours restarting mission and trying to get that s in every mission. I keep Dante on default. For Nero, I switched Blue Rose to the right trigger, put the Devil Buster back on circle like it was in 4, and moved the breaker to square. Having done that, I can now bind Devil Trigger to L1 to have consistency with Dante, and put Nero's breakage moves down on the D-Pad, sorta treating it like Nero's own version of style switching. The rest is the same as default. For V, I've got Griffon and Shadow on the triggers. His cane is on triangle for consistency with Dante and Nero's melee attacks, and I've got auto attack on circle with the "read edgy poetry" button on square. The rest is unchanged.
I liked your control scheme, it just feels a bit weird for me given I've gotten used to the regular controls and quick finger movement on the xbox one controller lol Amazing video as always, and you sound real nice
Yeah I hear that. Ive luckly haven't been playing dmc for too long, but I imagine people that have been playing 4 actively for years now would find it impossibly hard to switch.
@@conqvistguides7313 i actually only started doing index switching in 5. i got used to it because i have like 500 hours in this game probably. i sucked with dante in 4. btw, showdown and max bet on your controls is r2 + triangle. is that move hard to pull off for you?
@@TheComedicPCGamer nope, I just think of it as gripping the controller tightly and squeezing them together. I usually plan it ahead of time so i'll try to do it during the end frames of my last action and do a double input to make sure it comes out.
I like trickster and SM being more accessible, but I feel the weapon switch (wich is also a cancel in dmc3) is also important (I use melee on X and weapon change on Y). I can't figure a way to have the styles and the weapon switch comfortably. Maybe mapping DT to the DPad but then it's harder to charge it.
For Nero, I have Charge shot on R2. Lock-on on R1. Exceed on L2. And Devil Bringer on L1 (that way i can do moves like Hold and Buster Punches while using the Devil Breakers/Breakage moves. Devil Trigger on Directional Buttons. And Break-Away on Square. I really wish we could configure controls for Taunts.
Agreed. I've gotten used to it now, but I was trying to find out how to move taunt day one. Its weird because I thought dmc4 let you remap taunt if I remember correctly.
I stopped using controller because I cant move and switch styles, yeah. Also once you get cerberus with all that electric combos you need to charge (hold attack while using SM style or hold style while attacking) - I just dont understand how you are supposed to do that with one finger. Placing style move on shoulders also not that comfortable. Mouse with extra buttons seems much more useful, with LMB as attack and RMB for style/Devil bringer (helps with bringer knuckle timing) and side buttons to shoot.
I use mostly default keyboard controls for all the characters, other then Devil Breaker being on a side button same with Dante's style action. I have the same issue as Alan with the springs in the controller, except its my mouse & keyboard response. I doubt its true, but I believe that keyboard's response is quicker.
I never even considered changing the style buttons. Being able to charge DT is more useful than I initially thought though, ill probably switch change gun with that. I wish guns were more useful and I'd put them on a separate finger to charge but it's never worth it on Dante.
To add to the controversial control schemes, be warned. - Nero - Red Queen: R1 Exeed: L2 Devil Bringer: R2 Devil Breaker: Circle Break Away: D-Pad + Circle DT: Triangle Blue Rose: Square/Left Back Button Jump: Cross Lock-On: L/Right Back Button Breaker Switcher: D-Pad
I'd like to think you made this video cuz I bugged you about your controls :P. But jokes aside, your Dante controls are really more optimal, and I'm getting used to them. Btw, you have the voice skills so don't be shy if you feel like making another commentary video.
I know most people don't want to have to buy special peripherals just for a game, but having the Razer Wildcat controller makes playing this game, especially Dante, so much easier.
Your Nero controls are pretty similar to mine. I have Exceed on L2, DT on R2 and Breaker on O. I might move my DTs to L2 and set up my Dante like yours. Your set up seems to make Trickster and Swordmaster easier to use.
About Nero, it is pretty much the usual: X: Jump O: Devil Breaker (It is not that difficult for me to hold it) Δ: Melee ▢: Devil Trigger R1: Lock-on L1: Shoot R2: Devil Bringer L2: Exceed D-pad: Break Away For V, it is a little bit less common: X: Jump O: Cane Δ: Nightmare ▢: Auto-Attack R1: Lock-on L1: Griffon R2: Shadow (nope, I do not feel awkward about this) L2: Poetry Time Now, for Dante, I seriously messed up. First, I took your controls BUT added something that I started doing in DMC3 and DMC4: X: Trickster (Easy to dash or air trick along side with square) O: Swordmaster Δ: Melee ▢: Style R1: Jump L1: Shoot (I wanted to have DT, but it became difficult to Judgment with L2. Although it seems like it is difficult to me,, probably because I get antsy when I am running out of time) R2: Lock-on L2: Devil Trigger For the D-pad, same as the video. Now, why I use R1 for jumping? Because it is easier for me to JC like this. It is something that I started in DMC4, and back in those days I used to switch styles by using my index, so I did not have to take my thumb off of the left stick.
I'm so deep into the game now using the default controls that I've basically learned how to claw my way around the remote to do complex combos but it is still interesting to see what you've got going on not going to lie it seemed doable at first with Nero but once you switched to Dante I was like nawww I can't I'm too deep into being comfortable with default 🤣
I like your voice a lot! And all of your videos on dmc 5 are godsend to say the least. However, if you can make a video explaining the style system at some point, that will be more than great. By style system I mean the points you get at the end of fights. It seems like mission 10, 12, 18 on dmd are a bitch to S rank with a good score, I know it took me a lot of time, I want to S rank every forced fight, and when I get 7000pts in a fight only ti be reduced to 5000pts the next fight is flat out frustrating.
I suppose the best way to switch stykes on dante is to use something like additional xbox elite buttons. It is very pity (for me) that on next generation controlers they can't be found(
Mine Nero : X = DT Y = Attack A = Jump B= Devil Bringer RT = Gun LT = Devil Breaker RB = Lock on LT = Exced Dante : X = DT Y = Attack A = Jump B = Style RT= Gun LT = Change Gun RB = Lock on LB = Change Sword I've been used this since DMC4
I have default controls for Dante and have V's attacks on triggers. For Nero I have default lock on, Break Away, and Melee. I have DT on Square and Breaker button on R2 since it's easier to charge while attacking. I have gun on L2 so I can charge shot easier. Buster is on Circle. Lastly I have exceed on Dpad. Yeah, I know, it's weird. But I'm not usually moving when ex acting or Max Acting. So it's easy to get a charge out of it.
Watching Nero: Ey, nearly the same.
Watching Dante: wat

@@TheComedicPCGamer nope, I just think of it as gripping the controller tightly and squeezing them together. I usually plan it ahead of time so i'll try to do it during the end frames of my last action and do a double input to make sure it comes out.
I like trickster and SM being more accessible, but I feel the weapon switch (wich is also a cancel in dmc3) is also important (I use melee on X and weapon change on Y). I can't figure a way to have the styles and the weapon switch comfortably. Maybe mapping DT to the DPad but then it's harder to charge it.
Is that Viewtuful Joe OST I hear in the background? Great video!
"And so, Joe devotes himself with all his soul to his training regimen."
(When you've had enough, press the z button)
Thats actually pretty smart yoir loadout for dante and nero
I doubt its true, but I believe that keyboard's response is quicker.
well i play with keyboard and mouse, only change i made is moving the style action/devil breaker/cane from mouse3 to mouse5.
I play with Default Keyboard and Mouse controls
@@iroquoiskaram8639 i just found it uncomfortable to hit mouse3 multiple times for combos or Royalguard with it
@@karlkarlson875 I got used to it
I never even considered changing the style buttons. Being able to charge DT is more useful than I initially thought though, ill probably switch change gun with that. I wish guns were more useful and I'd put them on a separate finger to charge but it's never worth it on Dante.
To add to the controversial control schemes, be warned.
- Nero -
Red Queen: R1
Exeed: L2
Devil Bringer: R2
Devil Breaker: Circle
Break Away: D-Pad + Circle
DT: Triangle
Blue Rose: Square/Left Back Button
Jump: Cross
Lock-On: L/Right Back Button
Breaker Switcher: D-Pad
I'd like to think you made this video cuz I bugged you about your controls :P. But jokes aside, your Dante controls are really more optimal, and I'm getting used to them.
Btw, you have the voice skills so don't be shy if you feel like making another commentary video.
I know most people don't want to have to buy special peripherals just for a game, but having the Razer Wildcat controller makes playing this game, especially Dante, so much easier.
You just exposed the secret of top players of Dante
Wow, WOW!
I only moved Nero's grab to circle and devil breakers to R2~
Your Nero controls are pretty similar to mine. I have Exceed on L2, DT on R2 and Breaker on O. I might move my DTs to L2 and set up my Dante like yours. Your set up seems to make Trickster and Swordmaster easier to use.
About Nero, it is pretty much the usual:
X: Jump
O: Devil Breaker (It is not that difficult for me to hold it)
Δ: Melee
▢: Devil Trigger
R1: Lock-on
L1: Shoot
R2: Devil Bringer
L2: Exceed
D-pad: Break Away
For V, it is a little bit less common:
X: Jump
O: Cane
Δ: Nightmare
▢: Auto-Attack
R1: Lock-on
L1: Griffon
R2: Shadow (nope, I do not feel awkward about this)
L2: Poetry Time
Now, for Dante, I seriously messed up. First, I took your controls BUT added something that I started doing in DMC3 and DMC4:
X: Trickster (Easy to dash or air trick along side with square)
O: Swordmaster
Δ: Melee
▢: Style
R1: Jump
L1: Shoot (I wanted to have DT, but it became difficult to Judgment with L2. Although it seems like it is difficult to me,, probably because I get antsy when I am running out of time)
R2: Lock-on
L2: Devil Trigger
For the D-pad, same as the video.
Now, why I use R1 for jumping? Because it is easier for me to JC like this. It is something that I started in DMC4, and back in those days I used to switch styles by using my index, so I did not have to take my thumb off of the left stick.
my hands naturally evolved to claw while playing dante it jus seemed like right it does hurt sometimes tho.
Great video bro
I really like your controls for v
I changed my controls to yours and now im derping so bad at this game just smashing buttons lmao
for nero all I did was switch devil trigger button with switching arms on the depad
My buttons are exactly the same for Nero but I keep default for Dante I switch styles while the long trickster or gunslinger animation is active.
Bro your voice is cool don't worry bout it 😎
I’m gonna try this and get back to you A.C.
sounds good, let me know how it goes.
Worked out so well, he didn't stop playing to this day! Answer coming out in 4 years when he needs to stop to put in DMC 6:)
Whoops, I forgot about my comment! My fault 😅.. these worked out amazing! I still play like this til this day! Who else found this to be helpful??
I don't know why I had an issue with the controller, with me keyboard is easier
Very helpful video
I suppose the best way to switch stykes on dante is to use something like additional xbox elite buttons. It is very pity (for me) that on next generation controlers they can't be found(
Mine
Nero :
X = DT
Y = Attack
A = Jump
B= Devil Bringer
RT = Gun
LT = Devil Breaker
RB = Lock on
LT = Exced
Dante :
X = DT
Y = Attack
A = Jump
B = Style
RT= Gun
LT = Change Gun
RB = Lock on
LB = Change Sword
I've been used this since DMC4
Very cool
My control scheme is half and half... Because my roommate broke my controller
Thank you. i'm gonna need that for my Platinum run 😎✨
i trust you, so i'm gonna try this
Nice, this gives some ideas thanks.
If I can make this work with 3 and 4, I'll do it.
Very nice Dante control scheme you have, it's super efficient, and i'd say even better than stock. Have you revised it since upload?
Nope, I still use have the same control for dante and nero since this.
