    Bio:
Taishoji Taiko was founded in 1989 as a bon dance group under the direction of Yoshihumi Ono at Taishoji Soto Mission in Hilo, Hawaii. Besides Ono-sensei, the group credits their foundational skills to Faye Komogata of Hawaii Matsuri Taiko and Rev. Ryuji Tamiya of Kona Daifukuji Taiko as well as to renowned artists such as Kenny Endo and Marco Lienhard. Besides playing for Taishoji Soto Mission’s annual Bon Dance and Toro Nagashi, the group also supports the dances at several temples along the Hamakua coast.
In its 34 years, the group has developed a kumi daiko style that embraces both tradition and innovation. Besides playing traditional and open source pieces, the group often features the original compositions of artistic director Chad Nakagawa, which highlight the layering of simple rhythms into more complex and compelling patterns, often with humor and a sense of play. Taishoji Taiko has been recognized for their engaging and energetic performances at various cultural events, including Waimea’s Cherry Blossom Heritage Festival, Hilo’s Queen Lili’uokalani Festival, Honokaa’s Peace Festival, and the biennial Big Island Taiko Festival. The group represented Hawaii Island at NATC’s 2015 Taiko Ten and has had the honor of performing for cultural icons Grandmaster Sen Soshitsu XV of Urasenke and sumo legend Takamiyama.
