In the realm of petrol garden machinery, a hunting engine pertains to a situation where the engine's RPM (revolutions per minute) experiences fluctuations or "hunting," resulting in uneven performance and a wavering sound. This occurrence is commonly observed when the engine shifts between running too swiftly and too sluggishly, akin to it searching for a steady operational speed. Engine hunting can manifest in various petrol-powered equipment like lawnmowers, chainsaws, trimmers, and other garden implements.
    Potential Triggers of Engine Hunting:
    1. **Air-Fuel Mix Irregularities**: Improperly calibrated carburetor settings, obstructed fuel jets, or a soiled air filter can disrupt the balance of the air-fuel mixture, culminating in engine hunting.
    2. **Carburetor Concerns**: A malfunctioning or grimy carburetor can impede accurate fuel delivery, causing instability in engine performance.
    3. **Fuel Complications**: Stale or contaminated fuel can hinder combustion and engine operation, giving rise to the hunting phenomenon.
    4. **Spark Plug Issues**: A fouled or impaired spark plug might lead to inconsistent ignition, thereby triggering engine hunting.
    5. **Vacuum Leakages**: Any leaks in the engine's intake system can create air imbalances, leading to the hunting behavior.
    6. **Throttle Linkage Challenges**: Problems with the throttle linkage or governor mechanism can result in sudden speed shifts and engine hunting.
    7. **Exhaust Blockages**: A clogged or partially obstructed exhaust system can hamper exhaust flow and contribute to hunting.
    Possible Remedies for Engine Hunting:
    1. **Clean or Replace Air Filter**: Ensure the air filter is clean and devoid of debris. Replace it as needed.
    2. **Inspect and Adjust Carburetor**: Validate that the carburetor is precisely adjusted as per the manufacturer's specifications. Clean the carburetor and fuel jets if required.
    3. **Use Fresh Fuel**: Always opt for fresh, high-quality fuel with the correct fuel-to-oil ratio.
    4. **Evaluate and Replace Spark Plug**: Scrutinize the spark plug for fouling or damage. Replace it if necessary and ensure the gap is accurate.
    5. **Address Vacuum Leaks**: Thoroughly examine the intake system for any leaks or loose connections. Seal any vacuum leaks.
    6. **Clean Fuel System**: Regularly cleanse the fuel lines, fuel filter, and fuel tank to thwart debris accumulation.
    7. **Governor Adjustment**: Inspect the throttle linkage and governor mechanism for proper functioning, making adjustments as required.
    8. **Inspect Exhaust System**: Conduct a thorough check of the exhaust system for any blockages or hindrances. Remove any obstructions found.
    9. **Professional Servicing**: If the issue persists, consider enlisting the assistance of a professional mechanic or authorized service center for a comprehensive inspection and rectification.
Kindly note that working on petrol engines demands a certain level of mechanical know-how and safety precautions. Should you lack confidence in diagnosing or rectifying the issue independently, it is advisable to seek the expertise of a qualified technician to ensure meticulous and secure repairs. This information is intended for a UA-cam video description, offering valuable insights into addressing engine hunting in petrol garden machinery.

Thank you, Adrian. Very well explained. We have a similar engine with these symptoms at light loads. Under heavy load (it is a generator) it is okay. I'm going to try this first. Cheers.

That's great thank you, my problem is the same carb on a water blaster, but it has always done this, putting me out a bit in terms of finding the problem. God I love the internet for finding a solution to a problem, no excuse these days for being ignorant. Back to the garage now.
