I'm with Bruce on Elden Ring. I've never enjoyed a game so much, yet at the same time, been so over it.
When friends ask about it, I say, "I beat it, I loved it, and I NEVER want to touch it again." It makes me physically ill when I think about playing again, but I'd recommend it to everyone and have fond memories, haha!

I wanna say the biggest draw for Pokemon SV was that it was actually different in many capacities to nearly all of its mainline predecessors. It was on a home console than a handheld, it was a third-person adventure game than a top-down one, it offered multiple storylines, co-op multiplayer, extensive character customization, and it was coming off the heels of Arceus which was a fairly good proof of concept that GameFreak was trying new things that weren't gimmick games, remasters, or shoveling Pikachu or Eevee out the door. That's what drove me and many of my friends that hadn't touched Pokemon in several years to give it a shot.
Given the game launched in a busted state but when the last Pokemon game I touched was Omega Ruby back in 2014 and for some it was 2006's Diamond/Pearl or even 2004's FireRed/LeafGreen, SV had enough new stuff being offered to warrant trying it out.
I'm willing to bet the record-breaking sales numbers wasn't brand loyalty alone, there are other reasons that people who don't play Pokemon games gave this one a shot.

Prices going from 60 to 70 isn’t going to stop me because I’ve already stopped buying games at release. I have such a massive backlog of games I want to play that I don’t really need the new big titles. I’ll just wait for them to go on sale

Cloud gaming has actually done a lot for me. I started off with Stadia and that taught me how to buy games legitimately based on the idea that I could play anywhere. Then I used GeForce Now which taught me to legitimately build my Steam library and now I own a Steam Deck that's able to play all my purchased games.
Before that I illegally downloaded every game my hardware was capable of running, expensive software and movies alike. Those services have taught me to buy digital products legitimately in order to use them across several platforms but also to support the software itself.
And this all really started with Stadia so credit to them, they even fully refunded ALL software and hardware I purchased from them and even got to keep their Chromecast and controller. No bad experiences

with my country's Dollar being lower from the US', the average price for a game has gone up to about 120 dollars for a new release. At the moment, i am happily content with catching up on a lot of releases i have missed out on previously, like the Bio-shock series, Fallen Order, just to list a few examples.

On the subject of Scarlet and Violet, AustinJohn Plays put out a video today that talked about how an overclocked Switch could in fact run the game very smoothly, but suspects that the game runs poorly is because the developer underclocked it in order to allow all Switches, including first gen original Switches, to run the game. There are things in the game that suggest the game was designed with a more advanced Switch Pro in mind, but because it’s not ready, the game was underclocked to work on current hardware. This may also explain why Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom was pushed back from holiday 2022 to its current release date (to coincide with the release of the Switch Pro) and why Pokémon was moved up to fill the vacant holiday release space.
Regardless, what remains true is that, on optimized hardware, the games run well, so not optimizing performance, even with the aforementioned challenges and circumstances, is inexcusable.

When I started buying my own games they were $50 each. I could fill up the gas tank in my Plymouth Neon for $20, I went to the $1 theater every weekend with my friends, and I could get a can of Surge for 75 cents. While I hate the price increase to $70, the unfortunate truth is $70 isn't bad in comparison.

While I think I will eventually have to pay the $70 price tag, I am still against doing so for the time being. Haven't bought anything at that price tag yet. Even the $60 price tag gives me hesitation, but I'd pay it for titles I really want, which there was only like 1 or 2 of in the last couple years. Everything else is sale prices only. While unlikely, we'll see if I don't buy them at the $70 price tag in the coming year or two.

Cloud whatever is never gonna take off in the US until we get out of this laughable crapy internet speeds that our ISP monopolies have control over. Especially in the midwest where I live most cities have at most 1 internet company where you have to pay extra to just have decent internet.
As for games and all that this year has been kinda crapy to me. But this is kinda a 3 year dry spell for me unfortunately. I know last year I got a few games that were fun like "the room" series, Middle earth: Shadow of war, Shovel Knight: Treasure Trove, Superliminal, house of da vinci 1 and 2, Control, Metro Exodus, and Carrion. Some of those were really fun games like control, shovel knight, the room games, house of da vinci games. But some were either pretty short or just not that much fun and also were already old and got them on sale.
This years christmas sale on steam is a bit of a disappointment since I was expecting slightly better discounts vs other times of the year and yet it's the same. I had been waiting for a while for some good discounts maybe. Some games that released that I was looking forward to ended up becoming somewhat a disappointment.
Shadow Warrior 3 doesn't look nearly as much fun as the one before it. Evil West looked promising at first only to see it looks like it came out a decade to late. High on life does look fun, but like some have pointed out it seems like some of the jokes go on to long (which even if you turn down the dialog some you can't skip/avoid), as well as no FOV slider is really putting people off on that game. Currently I am just kinda waiting cause doesn't really feel like it is worth full price right now.
No More Heroes 3 I had been looking forward to but still don't own a switch so didn't think I would have a chance at it until I saw it is released on PC now. Looks kinda like it will be fun, even watched a bit of Lawrence play it here or there in videos. However, it doesn't seem like it has the same feel as the 2 previous games which I enjoyed. And from some of the criticisms I have heard about it has put me off from getting it yet. Maybe some day.
Dying Light 2 had a bunch of promises and way to many people hyping it up like Alanah who was talking about how the game was gonna be revolutionary when it releases etc. Pointing out this and that it was gonna do in gameplay etc. Only for that to be a lie and a let down. I have mostly only hear people talk about how they prefer the first one over it. From what iv seen of gameplay it doesn't interest me as much as dying light 1 did when I played it.
I think the other factor these days is the fact so much of the market is being pushed towards MMO games. So many games releasing these days and the past year have mostly been aimed at people playing online matches against others. Those types of games don't interest me. I also don't find much fun in games like dark souls/elden Ring etc. Lies of P does have my curiosity and thus is on my wishlist but I haven't seen much from the game so when it does release I might not be interested in it unfortunately if it's to much like a dark souls game.
Then there is the fact of not having the newest consoles is also hurting my gaming. But the newest consoles have put me off from getting them. From the joystick drift the switch controllers are suffering with A LOT, to ifixit doing a tear down of the PS5 controller and basically saying "these will inevitably suffer from joystick drift eventually" for a controller that costs so much money and wont last. I still have my very old, old school game consoles that still work to this day. Granted N64 joystick was crapy out of the gate but you can buy retro controllers that work with it that have a better joystick that wont suffer from that.
When I buy a console or something I want something that will last, especially if I have to fork over so much money for it. If they aren't gonna last or they want to push me onto some stupid subscription model to be able to play certain games or consoles I lose all interest in said stuff.
Also screw Nintendo they have turned into such an awful company over the years where they care more and more about profits. They used to have it where if your gameboy would break or something you could send it in and they would fix it for you, even long after the fact. Nowadays you get a controller that suffers from joystick drift and have to jump through hoops to get it fixed or replaced. Sometimes getting the same controller back that is still suffering from the problem you sent it in for. And their games staying full price for a decade after they released is also a joke. Last first party nintendo game I got was way back for the Wii and it was Mario Bros Wii which I was excited for since it finally dropped down to like $20-30. After I got it and played it for a half an hour I realized it was just the same old mario brothers levels just with better graphics really. If I wanted that, I could have just played some old mario brothers games.
Same with them pushing mario brothers all stars and making it artificially scarce by only releasing it for a short time. Or those mini retro consoles they released for a short time. And not to mention flagging or taking monetization from people making any type of video on Nintendo stuff on youtube a while back.
Right now I am wanting some fun new games that interest me but I am having a very hard time finding them since the gaming climate these days is mostly pushed towards subscriptions, or always online junk, mmo type games, or having to buy an expensive console that is still hard to find cause of scalpers. It is depressing, I miss just having a fun game that I can play without having to jump through hoops etc.

I will not buy £70 games. There will be maybe one or two games a year that I might consider it for. But I will be trying my hardest to not give in. I have such a back log anyway that I can basically live in the sales at this point, so that’s what I’ll do.
Basically, them upping the cost means they will get considerably less money from me as I will be waiting for discounts. So it will have the opposite effect that they want. I’d urge all gamers to take the same approach and they will lose money, not make it. While we still get to play the games we love for like half the price or more. Why give all that money to Microsoft when you can wait 3-6 months and effectively keep half the money for yourself? At a certain point it becomes an issue of self respect.

Over the last few years I’ve gotten in the habit of waiting for game sales anyway so the 70$ tag hasn’t changed my buying decisions. I only just now bought FF7 intergrade this week because it dropped to 40$ on the winter Steam sale.
My backlog’s way too stuffed to grab everything on day one.

I got a Steam Deck about a month ago! I’ve always enjoyed playing games, but the accessibility was tough since I work a ton. Having a mobile, handheld, powerful gaming device I can throw nearly anything at is absolutely welcome. However, battery life and resolution are my biggest gripes. I do understand that the device is SMALL so, asking for consistent 1080p and great battery life is asking a lot. 🤷🏻

It's a funny notion to me that because Elden Ring came out this year it couldn't be a bad year for gaming. Newsflash: not everyone liked Elden Ring. I didn't touch the game, it's not my type of game and I knew that before it came out because I tried out Dark Souls and Elden Ring is more of the same. And that counts for a lot of people. So you get a survivorship bias where only the people who like these games play them and they are the ones commenting on it and the whole portion of the gaming sphere that doesn't care one iota about Elden Ring is simply quiet and thus not counted.
If there are just two games that come out that are both a very specific and similar type of game for a very specific and similar part of the gaming audience that are considered great (Elden Ring and GoW: Ragnarok), it's a bad year for games.

Nintendo made what was to me a rare apology for Pokemon S&V. I just don't think the first update that came with the apology did anything to my game lol
I was so excited for the game, but ngl, It felt like a step back from Pokemon Arceus, or at least to me it does. My scarlett download is now collecting digital dust in my switch since playing it feels like a drag to me.
I don't think games this year were that good. Not even Elder Ring, which bored me to death. I spent more time creating my character than playing the game... I've never played Dark Souls or Sekiro however, meaning that I am brand new to these type of games, so maybe that's why.
So no more $64.94 dollar big tittle games? I think some are worth the money such as Rockstar titles, but the $10 difference will definitely make think twice about purchasing new games.
Btw, is VR still a thing? Were there any new games released for VR or are people still playing beatsaber? I need to take out my Quest 2 and check out what's new.
I rarely make long🐴 comments, but y'all's channel really got me going lol

Everyone needs to play Signalis! So good

Putting CoD on Switch is one of the most laughable things said this year. The moment MS said that just makes me think the MS intends to make CoD exclusive just because it's so laughable to put CoD on Switch. You might as well put Cyberpunk on Switch.
Also the price hike to $70 isn't a surprise. If you went shopping lately, everything has gone up in price. Some things went up by 30%+ over the past year so complaining about the prices increasing to $70 is basically complaining when games increased from $50 to $60, seems really bad st first but then becomes to norm and no one will really care after a couple years. Inflation is inevitable.

2022 at least for me didn't really have a lot to offer, but what it did have to offer despite how little it was... was all amazing. Elden Ring, God of War and Horizon all amazing and they all lasted for quite a while. All in all one thing will never change, Fuck blizzard and may GTA 6 finally release one day.

2022 was not only the worst year in gaming. Not to mention inflation and major gas prices. But nice to see part of the original cast post a video during the Holidays.

boo hoo on the $70 price tag of games in the US, prices in Canada are worse and even with the conversion rate our cost of living is about the same if not worse. I haven't paid $80-$100 for a game since the Nintendo 64 days in the 90's. :(

I mean the pokemon games sell well regardless, but also these games (content wise) are very high quality compared to the past several generations. Its pretty well agreed upon with people who have actually plaued the games that the Story is actually enjoyable, character designs are interesting, the pokemon themselves are very well favored by many people, and the open world design actually works great for the gameplay loop.
You say here that fans of the games will buy them (almost) no matter what, and that's true... but they are actually enjoying playing this game, quite thoroughly from the general consensus. So yeah they are selling well because the people who actually like the games are actually having a lot of fun with them

I definetly wont be impulse buying brand new games anymore if they all shift to $70
I genuinely wasn't ever planning to play elden ring, and I played Ds2/Ds3/Sekiro. I just didnt plan to buy it, but on release i saw it on the front page of steam and i couldnt pass it up. For $70 I probably would have just stuck to watching content creators play it.

i feel like $70 is where i'm pretty much waiting on a sale for anything that i'm not highly anticipating. i wonder if they used $65 as a stopgap on their way to 70 if it would even seem like a problem to me, even in my brain now i'm kinda waving off $5 as opposed to double that. either way, see ya on the Wario64 posts ✌

I get the statement of "If you don't like the game don't buy it and they won't make it" but that's a very... Vegetarian method lol. One person not buying meat isn't going to change a thing. Cows still gonna die. I.e. A game is still going to get made even if you don't buy it. Takes millions of people not buying a game for it to have any big impact.
I think you should just not buy a game for the sake of not enjoying it. Issue there is that games LOOK interesting and fun but in playing them, they can be a let down. Sure "Wait for reviews" but man, that's a hit or miss method as well. I've enjoyed plenty of games who have bad reviews. Most of the time its from a bad launch but the game gets damn near perfect after 2-4 weeks of patches.
BF2042 is the most recent example. Game had me hyped up and I was super excited only to be let down in a HUGE way. I hated that god forsaken game at launch. Felt like the worst launch in BF herstory and I've been there for every launch since BC2. Fast forward to 2022 and I actually do enjoy playing it.

I agree that you can just go play something else. It's not infuriating as much as it is disappointment. With Diablo Immortal, I wanted it to be everything they said because I had LOVED the franchise up to that point. So it really sucked seeing something I loved and was excited for to be ruined all for a quick cash grab.
