You covered everything I would see and I am now more confident in the esim installation this time. Hey Rose! Lots of luck for your trip. As long as you have data roaming toggled off on your primary SIM and Allow Mobile Data Switching toggled off on your eSIM then your carrier shouldn't charge you any roaming fees. If they still do, then let me know as I will personally visit their houses and throws eggs at them, because that's entirely unfair. All the best! ^Jonny
Sorry to read that@@brettmccabe750 Unfortunately that can happen if you don't turn data roaming off on your primary SIM, but that isn't a fault of Airalo. ^Jonny

Such a great video and set my mind at ease! Just downloaded/activated my eSIM for Sri Lanka - I won’t be going for a few days yet though. Can I toggle off ‘turn off this line’ until I arrive?
Yes, that's always a good idea. Have a great trip to Sri Lanka, I've always wanted to visit, it looks beautiful. Feel free to drop me a comment when you get back, I'd love to hear about the trip. Cheers. ^Jonny

Honestly, that's so awesome to read because it's precisely what I wanted from this video, I wanted people to feel more comfortable with eSIMs. All the best with your trip to China. ^Jonny
Hi, it’s the best tutorial I’ve seen here on UA-cam. I have question, if I already arrived in the destination can I still buy the esim? Thanks in advance
Great question! Yes you can, you would be activating and installing immediately, so the only potential issue is that you need a reliable internet connection, but hopefully you can find one at a coffee shop, hotel etc. Glad you found the video useful. ^Jonny
A very good explanation. A lot of information covered and very clear. However, the information about adding the widget was far too fast for me. Still no idea how to do this.
Monito, I was hoping you could help with a question. Once we are in the country we are visiting, and we have activated our Airalo eSIM, and turned data roaming on for the eSIM, and turned data roaming off for our primary/home country cellular provider, SIM; should we also toggle, "Turn on This Line" to "off" for our primary/home country cellular SIM? Hope that makes sense. And thanks again for the awesome video. I watched a few others, and yours is by far the best I found.
It isn't necessary, but you could toggle Turn on This Line to off as a means of peace of mind. If data roaming is set to on for your eSIM, and Mobile Data in Settings is also set to your new eSIM with Allow Mobile Data Switching toggle off then you wouldn't need to turn your Primary SIM off entirely, but again, it can provide peace of mind. Just remember if you switch it off you obviously won't be able to receive or make calls and texts. Hope that helps.^Jonny
I’m in Europe now in the middle of the big cellular network outage now so I might be looking at giving this a try. Is it hard to change back to original SIM after done using it? Thanks for posting this 👍🏼
QUESTION: Thank you for your video. I have saved it and downloaded the app to use when I travel out of the country. I do have a question. Would you say this is beneficial to use as your total phone plan?
I don't think it would be cost-effective as I'm assuming you'll need calls and texts? And those eSIMs cost more money, you would probably be better off getting a SIM card from a local network/carrier. ^Jonny
i accidentally activated my eSim in my home country (following your tutorial till the end without thinking) and received a message “we wish you a pleasant stay in ‘home country'”. the sim now won’t work in my actual destination right? should i delete the sim, get a new one and wait with the activation until i arrive at my actual destination or did i get it wrong and the sim might still work? cheers
This is a great video, but I have a question... at 7:10 you indicate that for iMessage you should select "Primary" to use your regular plan for messages and facetime. If you do that will you not incur data charges while traveling? I would think you would want to select 'personal' for the eSim plan here. If you select Primary because you aren't traveling YET how do you get back to this option to select the eSim plan for your trip?
Hey! Yeah that's actually what Airalo recommends, you select iMessage as Primary so you can still receive iMessages and FaceTime calls, but it won't use your data because your Mobile Data will be set to your eSIM. ^Jonny
Thanks for the video! So im going to new york (from UK), for 3 days, then cruising from there to the Bahamas for a week (I intend on buying the ships wifi package for onboard the ship 😢💸💸) after the cruise im going back to newyork for another day and a half. My question is - do I purchase the whole vacation amount of days for an eSIM, or buy say 3 days worth for start of trip then top it up when i get back to newyork after cruise? Hope this makes sense! Also need the phone calls package just so i can call family back home, as my father doesn't do whatsapp etc. I am not a heavy data user. Thanks so much for your help if you can give me any advice 😊
Thanks for the video it was really well done! I would just like to ask do I need to turn off my primary SIM card once I arrive to avoid the charges I might get with my original phone carrier. Thanks
No you don't need to turn it off entirely, you could just toggle Data Roaming to off on your primary SIM. I demonstrated this here: ua-cam.com/video/O2hGwPV4K_s/v-deo.htmlsi=aZllwFQpTIGaTZ-U&t=573 - That will prevent any roaming charges. Just make sure that you do that on your primary SIM. Let me know if you have any more questions. ^J
This is so helpful! Question! In keeping your default line primary, that ensures we can call out in case of emergency right? I’m boarding my pets & want to be able to call the vet for updates. (So much to think about when traveling abroad 😂)
Yes exactly 🙂 Keep your primary SIM as the default line, that way you can still receive and make calls and you'll be able to contact the vets. Safe travels and I hope it isn't too stressful! ^Jonny
Thank you. My one advice would be to activate the SIM the minute you land otherwise it might not be active by the time you reach immigration and need to show the QR code in the case of Japan. It took almost 30 minutes for it to work so it messed things up that otherwise had been well planned.
Thank you for all of the instructions. It is very helpful. So, now it is set to go, and when I land, it should automatically connect and work, yes? Thank you!
Yes, I would recommend activating before your flight, possibly at home and on a stable WiFi connection. It's important that you're on a solid connection during activation. Cheers. ^Jonny
Question : Can you also use this to connect multiple devices via hotspot when travelling outside home country? I’m torn between try using this or the portable pocket WiFi.
Yes you can, I mentioned this briefly in another Airalo video (ua-cam.com/video/EDD-zI6KGO4/v-deo.htmlsi=k1ft1wXCkkd29hlT&t=408), I've time stamped the video link. ^Jonny
Thank you. This was so helpful. Just to absolutely clarify - I don't have international roaming on my phone plan. I don't need it at all - right? The Airalo esim covers it all?
Hey! Yes, that's correct, with the Airalo eSIM activated you would be able to use that as your roaming data, so there wouldn't be a need to have international roaming on your main phone plan. Let me know if you have any more questions. ^Jonny
Nice explainer vid, Would you be able to receive sms calls on the esim designated number before arrival to destination country? For OTP services that require a "local" number?
Thank you! That's a great question. I believe you would still need to be at your destination country, as for a Discover+ eSIM to receive texts it would need to be activated and connected to one of its available networks. ^Jonny
The BEST video 'Monito'! I only wished there is a video on Android (google Pixel exactly). I am beginning to be a world traveler as I am retired. Also I see that you have lots of travel recommendation on how to transfer fund but most of them requires local contact in the country where I setting foot at. Is there anything where I can send to Google Wallet or anywhere that does not require local address or bank info?
You could get a bank account or card issued in your native country that's good for spending internationally and in a foreign currency and always use that for your travels abroad. If you'd like, feel free to share your country of residence and I'll try to make a recommendation. ^Jonny
Great video. Thanks for sharing.I didn’t understand was why to leave iMessage and FaceTime set to primary. Wouldn’t you want that set to the eSIM? Thanks
You're welcome! No, if you still want to receive iMessage and FaceTime then leave this set to Primary, but don't worry your phone will use your new eSIM for data. Just make sure the eSIM is set to data roaming. Let me know if you have further questions. ^Jonny
No worries and yes it will use your eSIM because you will have selected that one for data roaming during the setup process. So if you want to receive iMessage and FaceTime then leave this as your Primary SIM. ^Jonny
Very informative video. I think I have the confidence to give this a go. When the eSim is installed and working in the designated country (in my instance Canada), can I use Whatsapp Calling to make phone calls without incurring additional charges? TIA
Yes you can, as long as Mobile/Celluar Data (in your phone settings) is set to your Airalo eSIM then your phone will use that for data and not your regular SIM. You got this! Let me know if you have any more questions. ^Jonny
On a previous trip to Germany and the UK I had to buy different SIM cards, which was 😢frankly tedious. My roaming for my Australian home number was also not working, which I needed for 2factor authentication. WhatsApp worked well for messaging and web based phone calls. Can I switch my home Sim on for What’s App calls and how do I do that?
Is it normal for a message box to appear asking to 'allow' or 'dont allow' new esim from service provider? Also is it normal for the message to display a name which is not Airalo at time of activation? At 6:32 it notes esim from "Plus"
Yes it is normal, and the name could be Secondary, Travel, Plus, Business, just remember that Primary is your normal carrier and anything else during installation is your Airalo eSIM. ^Jonny
Regarding the activation when you arrive at your destination: do you have switch from primary to e-sim for ‘Mobile Data’ (the first option in the very top) and for ‘default voice line’?
Yeah switch Mobile or Cellular Data to your Airalo eSIM and turn of Allow Mobile Data Switching to off. Default voice line could remain as your primary SIM IF you want to still receive and make calls, but if not just switch it to your new eSIM. Of course if you don't have one with text and calls then you won't be able to use it for that. ^Jonny
Yes you can! But just make sure when you arrive that data roaming is turned off on your primary eSIM, and double check Mobile Data within phone's settings is set to your Airalo eSIM. ^Jonny
Found this video and saw your responds of your comments, so: Will be traveling to Japan, Singapore, and Indonesia. Can I just get 1 global e-sim for those country? Do I need to do something when I leave the country and when I arrive to new destination, or is automatic re connect to new destination(country)?
Hello Susan, I think in your case a regional eSIM would be the best choice, possibly this one (depending on your usage) www.airalo.com/asia-esim/asialink-30days-10gb. You would just need to install and activate it, once that's done it'll work when you move across from Japan to Singapore and into Indonesia. It is automatic, you don't need to do anything :) Let me know if you have any further questions, and make sure to use MONITO15 to get 15% off. ^Jonny
I haven't been able to, but I'm tempted to update my phone to a Google Pixel 9 to start making Android tutorials (it also looks like a great phone!). ^Jonny
That's up to you, you want to make sure data roaming is toggled off on your primary line, but if you want extra peace of mine and you don't need to receive calls or texts to your primary line then Toggle Turn This Line to off. This isn't essential for the Airalo eSIM to work, but it does provide greater peace of mind and assurance that your primary SIM won't roam. ^Jonny
Mate love this video, set mine up with no fuss...funnily enough the only issue I had was setting up the widget, when you long click it the widget it comes up with an option to choose which eSim you want to monitor but when I click the choose option it takes me no further. Weirdly I got it to work on the Mrs mobile??? Seen that before by any chance?
Cheers mate! Thats strange and the first time I’ve heard someone tell me that, I just checked on my iPhone and the widget is working normally. Is your iOS up to date? ^Jonny
Really useful, thank you. To be clear, we’re going Barbados and I don’t want stupid charges. What do I toggle to ensure I don’t make non data calls or receive them?
Just toggle your Primary SIM off. Do this by switching Turn On This Line to OFF. That way your normal primary SIM will be totally shut off for your trip.
Hello, can I install my e-SIM, activate it and then physically remove my main SIM from my phone? The e-SIM will still work? Or in order to work it needs my original SIM inserted in my phone?
You would still be able to use your phone, but certain things won't work. You won't receive phone calls or be able to make them or receive/make SMS messages with your home cellular number, although you could get an eSIM with calls and texts and use that instead. I don't think it's necessary to take out the SIM, you could just turn it off, or toggle data roaming off. ^Jonny
@@Monitodotcom Thank you! It's just because I am almost certain that I won't do the whole thing 100% correctly lol and it's ok not using my phone for anything else other then the data, cause it's only a 5-day trip vacation to the US :) (I'm from Canada)
I totally understand, in that case just remove the SIM so you can travel with absolute peace of mind and feel relaxed about it. Let me know how it goes :) Safe travels. ^Jonny
There's just one thing. As Airalo's esim is only for data transmission, you can't make or receive phone calls. Which, in principle, wouldn't be a problem since nowadays everything is done via the internet, right? Until the day my car rented by SIXT broke down in the interior of Spain, in the middle of nowhere, and the only way to contact the rental company was BY PHONE CALL! It is serious. There was no WhatsApp number or anything on the rental papers. Only one telephone number to contact in case of an accident or vehicle breakdown. A good-natured Spaniard who was passing by on the road stopped and was kind enough to make the call. Here's a tip.
Hey! If you go to Mobile/Cellular Service then select the top option Mobile/Cellular Data. There you can change it. Let me know if you have any more questions. ^Jonny
@@Monitodotcom ohh alright, I accidentally exited during the installation process and was unable to choose one of the two for cellular data. Is it fine that I “skipped” it as long as I opt for personal/secondary on cellular data in settings once I arrive at my destination? thank you!
Hey I came across this video after i installed the sim and have a question. So I installed the e-Sim on my main provider line where I also have my main cellular data plan. Is this a problem? As long as I make sure it’s using my data from the sim I should be okay right?
That’s no problem at all, as long as your main SIM remains turned on you’ll still receive calls and text. If you want to make a call then you’ll need to select your primary SIM as your phone will default to your new eSIM. ^Jonny
Great video! Can you please address Installation using the ‘Personal’ option for those interested in not Data Only, but for texts, phone calls and data? Thanks!
Hi Jonny Great video, thank you! Was wondering, if I didn’t choose Primary for iMessage and FaceTime during setup can I still fix that? Can I just make sure my phone number is still chosen in iMessage settings to fix the issue? My friends and family will use my phone number to contact me through iMessage and if I have my phone number turned off in iMessage I’m assuming they won’t be able to contact me unless I turn my phone number back on as a contact method in iMessage? Hope this makes sense….
Hi there! Thanks so much for watching and for your kind comment 😊. Yes, you can absolutely fix this! If you didn’t select “Primary” for iMessage and FaceTime during the setup, here’s how you can make sure your phone number is correctly set up: Go to Settings on your iPhone. Scroll down and tap on Messages, then tap Send & Receive. Under “You can receive iMessages to and reply from,” make sure your phone number is checked. For FaceTime: Go to Settings > FaceTime. Make sure your phone number is checked under “You can be reached by FaceTime at.” Once your phone number is selected in both places, your friends and family will be able to contact you through iMessage and FaceTime using your phone number. Hope this clears everything up-let me know if you have any other questions! ^Jonny
Yes turn data roaming off, and also check Mobile data within mobile service is switched to the Airalo eSIM and allow mobile data switching is toggled off.
Question - So, I can purchase an eSIM now whilst at home and can save it for a later time to use/activate? Does it expiry between purchase and being activated? Also, when I want to activate the eSIM… do I need connection to activate it if I have already purchased it? Thank you
Hey! There are some eSIMs that activate immediately after purchase, but most don’t. Most won’t activate until you connect to a network at your travel destination. Check the Activation Policy for more information, as this will tell you. Hope that helps. ^Jonny
Hey mate! Unfortunately, eSIMs can only be installed once and onto a single device - so your only option would be to tether or use one of the phones as a hotspot. Not ideal but this could be adequate just for low data usage. If you do choose this option, make sure to look for an eSIM that allows hotspotting. Cheers. ^Jonny
Yeah for sure! The validity and data won't begin until the eSIM connects to a network at your travel destination. So while you're at home, you're all good. ^Jonny
great video. unfortunately I had dreadful problems installing the airlo eSim. I spent 3 hours on chat support, first they mistook another of my sims for theirs, then none of 3 install methods worked. eventually worked out it was because I was on work wifi, switched wifi off and used 4G network and it installed straight away. also asked me which of my current plans (I have 2 existing sims) I wanted to switch off....? - would be useful to add details around those for others trouble shooting, in your great vid.
To avoid any roaming charges what should I do with the set up? Primary or personal? Still a bit confused with default line? If I press personal what will happen and can I do primary for the rest like mobile data and imsg+facetime
When it comes to the Default Line, if you want to continue receiving calls and texts then keep this as primary, for mobile data you want to select your Airalo eSIM and for FaceTime & iMessages you want to keep this as primary. That way you will still receive FaceTime/iMessages but your phone will use your Airalo eSIM for data. ^Jonny
I wish I had seen this video before I tried to set up. It’s been impossibly difficult, changing settings in my phone and I still can’t figure out know if it’s working. I’ve reached out to support but no one has replied to help. Buyer beware.

Monito, I was hoping you could help with a question. It isn't necessary, but you could toggle Turn on This Line to off as a means of peace of mind. If data roaming is set to on for your eSIM, and Mobile Data in Settings is also set to your new eSIM with Allow Mobile Data Switching toggle off then you wouldn't need to turn your Primary SIM off entirely, but again, it can provide peace of mind.

i accidentally activated my eSim in my home country (following your tutorial till the end without thinking) and received a message “we wish you a pleasant stay in ‘home country'”. the sim now won’t work in my actual destination right?
should i delete the sim, get a new one and wait with the activation until i arrive at my actual destination or did i get it wrong and the sim might still work?
cheers
Hey
You have helped me with Airalo
I review this video all over the world !!! Thanks
Need talk & text next time
Awesome! Thanks so much. ^Jonny
You made this process super easy, thank you
You're welcome Stacey! ^Jonny
Excellent video, thank you a lot for the help! From Brazil
You're very welcome! I'm here if you need any further help. ^Jonny
Great video, Do you know if I can order 2 esim at the same time for my wife and me or we need to order separetely? Thanks!!
Yes you can, your wife could simply scan the QR code from your app or order confirmation to install the eSIM. ^Jonny
Fantastic video, clear and concise instructions. Thank you!
Thanks so much! Glad you found the video useful. ^Jonny
^Jonny
@@Monitodotcomawesome! Thanks!
Thank you!
Awesome video thanks.
Glad you liked it! ^Jonny
so not to sound stupid however. so do you activate it before you get on the plane to your desitination or?
Yes, I would recommend activating before your flight, possibly at home and on a stable WiFi connection. It's important that you're on a solid connection during activation. Cheers. ^Jonny
Great video with clear and top-notch step by step guide. Many Thanks
That's great to hear, glad to be of service!
^Jonny
What happens if my trip is longer than the 30 days validity period? Do I have to start another eSIM?
^Jonny
Nice explainer vid,
Would you be able to receive sms calls on the esim designated number before arrival to destination country? For OTP services that require a "local" number?
Thank you! That's a great question. I believe you would still need to be at your destination country, as for a Discover+ eSIM to receive texts it would need to be activated and connected to one of its available networks. ^Jonny
Hi great Video! Quick Question though, as soon as i land at my destination i should allow Dataroaming for the e-sim right? Thank you!
Yes exactly, visit Mobile/Cellular Service in settings and make sure your new eSIM is selected and your standard carrier is switched off.
^Jonny
thanks for the video! very helpful! Does iMessage/FaceTime use the data from the esim even though you said to leave it set as primary?
^Jonny
Thanks for the vid, can I switch the on line off until I reach the destination on my new e sim?
^Jonny
Brilliant video, ease of the purchase, set up = purchase from me. Thank you !
This is very useful. Thanks for sharing. I wil definitely try airalo.
Let me know how it goes, it would be great to hear your feedback! ^Jonny
Good presentation. Did you do a similar one for Airalo install on Android, as opposed to iPhone?
I haven't been able to, but I'm tempted to update my phone to a Google Pixel 9 to start making Android tutorials (it also looks like a great phone!). ^Jonny
Thank you I was new to E-sims and this helped me soo much
That's awesome!
Hi, do I need to switch off my primary line when I land at my destination or does this remain on, along with my Airalo eSIM line?
^Jonny
@@Monitodotcom actually if I try deleting the app would this stuff up the eSIM I already installed?
No it won’t. Let me know if it works.
Awesome! Very helpful!
No worries! Feel free to let me know if you have any questions. ^Jonny
Really useful, thank you. To be clear, we’re going Barbados and I don’t want stupid charges. What do I toggle to ensure I don’t make non data calls or receive them?
Just toggle your Primary SIM off. Do this by switching Turn On This Line to OFF. That way your normal primary SIM will be totally shut off for your trip.
very helpful, and clear, thank yo
You're welcome!
^Jonny
thank you brilliant instructions. On my settings, my sim says 'activating' , does this take some time?
Yes, that can happen. Give it a few hours and then check again.
In an emergency I would just turn on my cell phone and make the call.
Hi, excellent video on esim setup. Do you know how to transfer this existing esim to a new iphone?
Has it already been activated? ^Jonny
I would like to know if I have to take out my sim card when using airalo.
No you do not. ^Jonny
Hi, where in the settings can I change the mobile data from primary to personal/secondary (new eSIM)
Thanks!
will this conflict with my current cellphone provider i currently have. or can i switch between both, kinda confused on that part
You can have an eSIM alongside your regular SIM, as long as your phone is unlocked. Who is your carrier ^Jonny
Hi, should I turn off the primary line to be safe?
You can do, just as long as you're happy not to receive calls or texts to your normal number. ^Jonny
Once you arrive at your destination should you change the mobile data option to the esim thank you
Yes, and I would advise toggling Data Roaming off on your regular SIM. ^Jonny
Hi Jonny
Great video, thank you!
If you didn’t select “Primary” for iMessage and FaceTime during the setup, here’s how you can make sure your phone number is correctly set up:
Go to Settings on your iPhone.
Scroll down and tap on Messages, then tap Send & Receive.
Under “You can receive iMessages to and reply from,” make sure your phone number is checked.
For FaceTime:
Go to Settings > FaceTime.
Make sure your phone number is checked under “You can be reached by FaceTime at.”
Once your phone number is selected in both places, your friends and family will be able to contact you through iMessage and FaceTime using your phone number.
Hope this clears everything up-let me know if you have any other questions! ^Jonny
do you have to turn off 'Turn On This Line' in Primary or is that not needed?
Not needed. ^Jonny
@@Monitodotcom Oh okay, so in Primary you only need to turn off Data Roaming, is that right?
Yes turn data roaming off, and also check
Mobile data within mobile service is switched to the Airalo eSIM and allow mobile data switching is toggled off.
perfectly explained 👍🏻 Thank you
No worries, glad it was helpful. ^Jonny
Question -
So, I can purchase an eSIM now whilst at home and can save it for a later time to use/activate? Does it expiry between purchase and being activated?
Also, when I want to activate the eSIM… do I need connection to activate it if I have already purchased it?
Thank you
Hey! There are some eSIMs that activate immediately after purchase, but most don’t. Most won’t activate until you connect to a network at your travel destination. Check the Activation Policy for more information, as this will tell you.
Hope that helps. ^Jonny
Hey mate, can two people use the eSim while travelling? (individual device). Thanks
Hey mate! Unfortunately, eSIMs can only be installed once and onto a single device - so your only option would be to tether or use one of the phones as a hotspot. Not ideal but this could be adequate just for low data usage. If you do choose this option, make sure to look for an eSIM that allows hotspotting. Cheers. ^Jonny
Thank you!
A quick question - if the data wont kick in until the arrival at the destination, is it ok to activated while still in the home country?
Yeah for sure! The validity and data won't begin until the eSIM connects to a network at your travel destination. So while you're at home, you're all good. ^Jonny
@@Monitodotcom awesome! Thanks so much!
Excellent instructions! Best yet, and your family made it a win my books for sure!
great video. unfortunately I had dreadful problems installing the airlo eSim.
^Jonny
Question! If I were to have no SIM card in my phone could I still use Airlo?
Yes absolutely, as long as your phone is eSIM compatible. ^Jonny
I wish I had seen this video before I tried to set up. It’s been impossibly difficult, changing settings in my phone and I still can’t figure out know if it’s working. I’ve reached out to support but no one has replied to help. Buyer beware.
This is so true. I spent $40.00 USD, it never worked and customer service simply did not speak with me. So I lost my $40.00.
Can I help at all? Let me know. ^Jonny
