Its relations to symbolism in ancient religions such as hinduinsm, biblical, sumerian annunaki, frankenstein a modern day prometheus, the alchemic calender. many many things. it's a very deep and symbolic film layered with so much
The very clever thing Prometheus does is it plays like mostly any other sci-fi, we hav a story/plot, Ideas to follow just like we would Dr Who and Star Trek. Remember we follow the Alien films as in the antagonists, the Xenos just like we follow the Klingons against the Federation, or the Daleks against the good Dr, but thats what draws you in, at the heart of Prometheus are bigger Ideas, such as creation and evolution that this film then leaves us to think about.
Wen u see a director with cappuccio in hand or chomping a cigar (not literally), you know thats a great film-maker there. kinda sick of using the word but Ridley... you're a legend.
this is the best interview I have seen with Scott. funny how the laid back, no pressure interviews often encourage people to open up and be frank/honest/revealing.
Art isn't critiqued one set way. It's subjective. It doesn't matter if you judge it differently as you are unimportant in the matter. Ridley states certain things were kept vague on purpose and wanted to make this film like a treasure hunt. But assures you that it's all IN the film.
The large head is david, he did something in the past/future while everyone was in stasis or he going to do it now he's aboard the ship and he's taking riley to the homeworld with a biowarfair ship that may wipe out most of the engineers.
He doesn't speak about Blade Runner be cause he "gave everything away to be able to make it"!!! That is integrity. I really respect succesful artists. Ridley is at the top.
So wild that he can talk about Prometheus for another 2 hours and it wont be half as fascinating as him talking bout Bladerunner for 1 minute. That film is an indigestible meal that never ends.
Prometheus does have an ending. It has a classic science fiction ending that lets your imagination go wild. Take a look at message boards generating discussions far beyond anything Alien or Blade Runner could possibly offer. Prometheus is an incredible film and Prometheus goes far beyond his others taking it to the next level as Ridley Scott has stated.
I can do it. It left us wondering the full extent of the Enginner's biomech technology. The Enginners reproduction, genders, home planet, why they wanted to kill us, worship of the deacon, Shaw and David's relationship, the company, so many many things. Also Noomi, David, and Weyland were fascinating characters. I hope we see more of Peter Weyland in the film. Also all of the mains had evolution. From Holloway's self sacrifice to birth of the Deacon, whose themes ran throughout the entire film.
I agree that she was the most interesting. David was nothing like Ash really. The whole thing with Ash was he was pretending to be human, and his character climax was the reveal. David was a robot out in the open with his own fascinations, obsessions, interests. I have no idea what they will do with this character in the sequel. Also things can be plot points as well as themes, and sacrifice ties into the whole Death - Rebirth theme.
"By the end, you're just happy it's over and the guy was caught." and thats it, right there! The movie further justifies that this event is actual fact, and wen we can never really know that for sure can we.
wow great interview... its so raw and real. lighting is a bit off and camera angle is unique but i Love it. thank you for sharing. this is like the BEST interview. did you interview Tony also? I so wished you could have interviewed Tony
Ridley Scott is actually a master of ambiguity, he can make a really good straight forward movie, but every now and then if he is given a really good story, and he has that vision, he will tell it in a totally different way. Ridley has realized these days that mainstream audiences r too used to the usual movies, especially where prequels r concerned where everything is more or less explained, and very simply and neatly links up to the next, look at Lotr, and X-Men movies.
We're not talking about just design. My talk was about the flute guiding them, which is the ritual. And it was his intent with the younger and the elder and the whole sacrificial ritual. It was originally a bit longer with the salamander etc. The Alien is the Perfect organism, conceived on Christmas through a divine birth like birth, kills the "devil" Enginner meant to doom humanity, resurrecting itself in a perfected form The Deacon. It's only your mind that can't catch the subtitles.
Now, Ridley says "This is where he discovers one is alive. Infact logically, all four would be asleep right now. Somehow the other-- I dont want to get into it. The other three died." If you look carefully at this scene, or just at sum production shots of the engineers cryo pods, its shows burn-like holes arnd the chest parts of the other three pods. These holes r alot like the holes going bk on previous Alien movies, almost like xeno may hav broke out.
"So, Ridley, what do you think about all the people who didn't like Prometheus?" Answer: "Well, I couldn't care less what people think. I mean, isn't that the same thing George (Lucas) said about his prequels?"
Really admire Ridley Scott as he's responded to the fans reagrding Prometheus but Lindelof *&^%%$ it up. Without a doubt Scott is one of the best directors ever. Love his movies.
If u watch and listen to the making of, Ridley actually states who made the engineers, was "God". I think the film is about the whole Idea of God/creation, the engineers may hav split into 2 factions like Ive been hearing. 1 who rejected the Idea of God the creator of all things, either this or the engineers own Ideals and beliefs changed overtime. Maybe from the age old belief in God, to a belief that they were they're own Gods, or the Xeno bieng a incarnation of a God they chose to believe in.
so u mean Prometheus was the first solid, Alien movie in the series, since the original?? If thats what you mean I will say I do appreciate Prometheus as bieng the 1 movie that has actually atleast tried to explored the bigger picture in those "Space Jockeys," wen none of the other sequels in the series even bothered, but only more focused on the main attraction of the "Xenomorphs".
Most revealing lines in Prometheous are delivered by "David" All through the film he reveals very criptic details which are made very obvious by Ridley Scott's directing. This, to me, was incredible obvious, even on 1st view. David is the key to unraveling the mysterys so many are complaining about. The issues with the film was Ridley trying to keep Hollywood happy while still keeping open a possible sequal. Kubrick died because he upset Hollywood imo. Ridley is no fool, But he's in a snake pit?
I doubt a ancient, highly intellectually advanced race such as the engineers would failed so spectacularly like they did, without sumkind of inside interference. I gather there was either a group or a rouge engineer who thwarted thier plans, and purposefully unleashed thier vicious evolutionary bio-weapon upon that group. Becus if u listen to Ridley's own commentary on the movie he does give slight clues to go on. The scene where David activates and is admiring the star map, the end of that -
"Should they have inspected the rubble there on site? That doesn't sound efficient." No but steel beams could have been tested for evidence of explosives. girders and joists could have been analyzed for damage patterns. residue from incendiary and explosive devices could have been investigated. And all that necessary evidence was destroyed. direct violation of federal law regarding crime scene protocol, the wtc debris pile was virtually locked down and illegally cleared of all pertinent evidence
Hmm perhaps in sum parts of the world, or if ur an independent film maker yes, but in the west thats not entirely always the case Im afraid. It will always depend of what you intend to say. Like put it this way, Id luv to see a docu-style movie that explores the theories and actually tries to get as close as possible to the truth behind everything that happened to do with the tragic event of 911. But that wont happen maybe for decades
Prometheus Collector's edition is sold out on Amazon and the #1 Blu Ray percentage wise of all time dude it beat Avengers, which held the previous record of 72%
Ridley is so right here we've seen enough of the Alien Xenomorph now that we simply aren't scared of it anymore, which is why Romulus simply didn't work.
Where ZDT is concerned It needs a film that really goes deep, far bk into this history and to b honest a director like Oliver Stone to really get close to the actual truth. And we will never be told the real truths of these things until many yrs later, wen certain perpetrators and individuals are long dead.
Ridley is more clever than u know, he has carefully set up things in the film that only give out tiny little hints. Maybe the 1 main flaw with Prometheus is that it prob is abit too convoluted. Ridley tried to cram alot in there, philosophical undertones to do with self preservation against self sacrifice. Yes the engineers made us, but maybe they spilt into two sides. One that intended to either wipe us all out, or atleast use us as sum sort of great sacrifice to thier revered God.
They left a lot of room open for a sequel, so I'm sure they'll probably explain more about the Engineers in the following movies, how they died, things like that. Also, humans made the hints, those cave paintings, weren't you paying attention to the movie?
I agree I really liked it, but I luv how its a distant prequel and even how Ridley himself has missled so many people, I can see how this has annoyed many fans. In the commentary he even says at that big reveal towards the end of the Engineer taking command of that famous mysterious chair, Ridley fully intending that particular scene to make everyone go "Ohh, I see". I like that maybe 1 day wen we're all maybe more clever, opened minded in our thinking people will really able to appreciate this
Ridley hasn't ever tried to top Alien and Blade Runner though, he just makes films he feels is right and leaves it up to the audience to decide what they think and hes never cared what critics say
Im just gonna put a few little pointers out there regarding 911. How can a passenger plane change it course in US airspace and even fly towards such Important areas (especially Pentagon), without being detected in the first place, and even shot dwn after maybe bieng given warning to change course? How 1 of the tallest buildings in NYC, topple in such a way, especially being hit by a of that size with that kind of force, and still fall in the manner that it did??
Did u remove ur comment? Ahh Ive watched Documentaries and most of them only ever scratch the surface anyway. As for finding out exactly how this whole thing really started in the first place, well theres your countries "Carter Doctrine" to consider for a start, and well basically the west overall has been meddling in the mid-east for decades anyway. And yes alot of it is to do with WW1, but if we get into that, we'd then b talking about a much more bigger picture wudnt we.
How is it not fair? If you have a question, research it. Don't be ignorant. Prometheus was self contained as well. They let you know everything they wanted you to know. Also there are no issues. Every single one has been addressed on the Prometheus forums. If you have questions, ask them over at Prometheus Forums.net
I was talking with some friends about how Prometheus is Ridley Scott's first sci-fi in so many years. I made the joke that it's his first sci-fi film since GI-Jane; "A Woman out of the Kitchen? C'mon!" The evil look in the eyes of the females in the room was CHILLING.

Considering the film is based on the whole mythology of Prometheus anyway. You really shud try and watch the film, and look carefully, cus Ridley has left alot of subtle clues to go on. And he basically knows if the movies does well, its gets a sequel.
And for your information they refer to Deacon being in a Crusafix pose with They Are Perfect / Welcome to immortality in the taglines. Weyland visited that Engineer for Eternal Life my god, no wonder you hate the film. you understood nothing.
Because they would consider it as a last resort if those planes had changed course, could not be communicated with and were heading to particular areas of importance, especially cities where theres masses of people but thats just the way I look at it.
I never really found the whole sacrifice scene Idiotic one bit. This is a powerful substance the engineers had either created or found, combined with thier own DNA, which broke that engineer's body right dwn to a molecular level in seconds, to b mixed with what ever micro-organisms may hav been on primordial earth at that time. A very intriguing and perhaps even controversial Idea, of-which I can understand wud bug sum people.
lol, oh Ive educated myself on this subject, which is kind of why I hav the perspective I do on this whole Issue. All conspiracy theories can b flawed, its only certain aspects and areas many of them touch on that may hav real solidarity. Thats the point of them, to explore things that just dont make sense. Not everything that happens in history and life is part of a conspiracy we know, but also there r many things that do happen that u hav2 step bk and really think about.
Prometheus kicked ass I loved the movie sorry for those people who had different expectations. It was not supposed to be a direct prequel those of you who did not like the film.
Yeh you say that but, answers are always welcome. Lindelhoff or w/e his name is deals in vagueness and longevity of the plot. I really liked the LOST show and I think he fucked that up. It was less about the island and more about the characters, I don't think that's why people were interested in LOST to start with. Well, it was obvious that they were angry at humans for something, but they never said it. The Engineers regretted their decision to make humans, and they even say that in the movie. That's why the Engineer went psycho on everyone.
what a humble , smart and very likeable guy

Was it incidental that the camera is looking up at him and he has a golden halo emanating from his head?
Wen u see a director with cappuccio in hand or chomping a cigar (not literally), you know thats a great film-maker there. kinda sick of using the word but Ridley... you're a legend.
Prometheus is legendary!
this intrw should be on the dvd!
great stuff!
thanks for posting this!!!
THAT CAPPUCCINO IS THE STAR OF THE INTERVIEW.
this is the best interview I have seen with Scott. funny how the laid back, no pressure interviews often encourage people to open up and be frank/honest/revealing.
dear god greatest directer of this century and the last one
Art isn't critiqued one set way. It's subjective. It doesn't matter if you judge it differently as you are unimportant in the matter. Ridley states certain things were kept vague on purpose and wanted to make this film like a treasure hunt. But assures you that it's all IN the film.
The large head is david, he did something in the past/future while everyone was in stasis or he going to do it now he's aboard the ship and he's taking riley to the homeworld with a biowarfair ship that may wipe out most of the engineers.
Since he started off as a graphic artist it makes sense he always has great visuals with his movies even if the scripts are weak.
He doesn't speak about Blade Runner be cause he "gave everything away to be able to make it"!!! That is integrity. I really respect succesful artists. Ridley is at the top.
the camera is directly below him, pointing up.. that's a classic camera angle for making people look evil
They left it up to you to decipher. You should listen to his commentary. Ridley says it's all in the film.
So wild that he can talk about Prometheus for another 2 hours and it wont be half as fascinating as him talking bout Bladerunner for 1 minute. That film is an indigestible meal that never ends.
@ 10:33 was Ridley Scott making a reference to the movie " Contact." It's driving me crazy cause he actually didn't say the name
They own them and they determine exactly what is put out through the media. Just realized how much we've discussed on a video about Prometheus lol.
Yes he has. Prometheus was excellent
He is clearly a Jedi!
Prometheus does have an ending. It has a classic science fiction ending that lets your imagination go wild. Yes he was informed, but I don't know if he knew where the camera was. I didn't have much to work with! Just a coffee table in a hotel room.
Ridley makes me proud to be British
This is fucking fantastic, thank you for posting this!
I agree that she was the most interesting. David was nothing like Ash really. The whole thing with Ash was he was pretending to be human, and his character climax was the reveal. PLEASE Ridley, keep the smooth space jazz in the Blade Runner sequel!
"By the end, you're just happy it's over and the guy was caught." and thats it, right there! The movie further justifies that this event is actual fact, and wen we can never really know that for sure can we.
Adam Savage would like the Maltese falcon reference =) excellent vid
This does not mean he has not contributed to cinema. It does not mean the good films he made became bad when he made less well crafted films.
Great Interview !! Thanks alot ;)
This man is a fountain of knowledge when it comes to the craft of film. No wonder he is a master filmmaker.
wow great interview... its so raw and real. lighting is a bit off and camera angle is unique but i Love it. thank you for sharing. this is like the BEST interview. did you interview Tony also? I so wished you could have interviewed Tony
will there be a sequel to prometheous?
Ridley Scott is actually a master of ambiguity, he can make a really good straight forward movie, but every now and then if he is given a really good story, and he has that vision, he will tell it in a totally different way. it was amazing
Thanks for sharing! "everything is collapsing"...
It did match and it was not bad writing.
Also Lost was one of the best written telivision shows
ALSO Lindelof was not the primary writer.
"Should they have inspected the rubble there on site? That doesn't sound efficient." no, I mean "Fifield" (english actor Sean Harris)
did you camera spy after him?
Ridley is so right here we've seen enough of the Alien Xenomorph now that we simply aren't scared of it anymore, which is why Romulus simply didn't work.
The mans a Genius ...Come on ... Amazing talent ;).
but maybe i have to see the director´s cut to get it .... ))
Someone tell me what he is drinking
Man I just had to have a capuchino latté after watching this interview.

I appreciate this interview having seen "Prometheus" twice. Liked it but had some issues with the script. Wonderfully well made film though.
They left a lot of room open for a sequel, so I'm sure they'll probably explain more about the Engineers in the following movies, how they died, things like that. Also, humans made the hints, those cave paintings, weren't you paying attention to the movie?
One word: Visionary
No, it was the dream had by the Character Elizabeth Shaw in her sleep pod thing.
Actually I am.
I agree I really liked it, but I luv how its a distant prequel and even how Ridley himself has missled so many people, I can see how this has annoyed many fans. We're just going rnd and rnd in circle on this lol
he looks like that most umpleasant character of the film
Ridley hasn't ever tried to top Alien and Blade Runner though, he just makes films he feels is right and leaves it up to the audience to decide what they think and hes never cared what critics say
Im just gonna put a few little pointers out there regarding 911.

I love this film.. I guessed it was an Alien beginning soon as they started to get ready to leave earth..
Did u remove ur comment? Ahh Ive watched Documentaries and most of them only ever scratch the surface anyway. Ridley is the MAN!!!!
genius.
I was talking with some friends about how Prometheus is Ridley Scott's first sci-fi in so many years.
I made the joke that it's his first sci-fi film since GI-Jane; "A Woman out of the Kitchen? C'mon!"
The evil look in the eyes of the females in the room was CHILLING.
As to ur point about them leaving hints where to find them, how do we know it is a hint?? Informative, but it would have helped to have a tripod when taping an interveiw.
No I didnt ignore it, theres just different ways of looking at the theories. Giv me sum examples then
Only confusing if it's beyond you
damn he loves his coffee.
AMEN:)
And for your information they refer to Deacon being in a Crusafix pose with They Are Perfect / Welcome to immortality in the taglines.
Weyland visited that Engineer for Eternal Life
my god, no wonder you hate the film. you understood nothing.
And yet the trouble there can b, that wot if the proof itself has already been removed/destroyed??
Because they would consider it as a last resort if those planes had changed course, could not be communicated with and were heading to particular areas of importance, especially cities where theres masses of people but thats just the way I look at it.
this is a cool dude,i like him.He has a bit of Orson Welles.
It was not supposed to be a direct prequel those of you who did not like the film.
wow he so makes that latte look DELICIOUS!
Uh, this is a Prometheus video. Would people kindly stick to the subject?
I want a cappuccino now..
Yeh you say that but, answers are always welcome. Lindelhoff or w/e his name is deals in vagueness and longevity of the plot. I really liked the LOST show and I think he fucked that up. The bioweapons ARE the aliens, lol
Well, it was obvious that they were angry at humans for something, but they never said it. The Engineers regretted their decision to make humans, and they even say that in the movie. That's why the Engineer went psycho on everyone.
Theres been 4!!!!!!!,lol
