- Another gap in the collection has been filled with this incredibly rare (In the UK) Hoover Powerdrive or Dial a Matic as it’s known in the Sates. Very heavy and not a popular cleaner in the UK probably due to its price and weight.
Since filming this video, I retrobrighted the main body, front and back panels and it looks so much better. I still need to give it a proper service, but I need to recover form taking it apart as it’s an absolute nightmare to work on.
The vintage Hoover vacuum cleaners in the UK and the USA have such a rich history! It is always beautiful to see a vintage cleaner being brought back to life. Wonderful job!
Roger please please PLEASE give us an update video for this machine! I’d love to see it do a big mess or full house cleaning demo when it’s restored to its former glory!
Date code 509 is Month 9 of 1975. Hoover dating system used 01 to 12 following the year digit, signifying the month, rather than the week, from 1967 up until about 1997 when the Hoover Candy dating system started, after which they did use the week of the year 01 - 53 rather than the month of manufacture.
It looks very familiar and posh a vintage vacuum cleaner but white very nice 👍
It looks very familiar a vintage vacuum cleaner but in green very nice roger 👍
My favorite Dial-A-Matic model
Great Video Roger , you are a insperation to us small content creators 👍
I have one like this but it's a later model from the 70's all in brown. The seller had cheap shipping on it for being so heavy so it was a great deal. Also the reason the brushroll has a groove in it for the belt is likely because Hoover recycles parts between models to save on R&D cost.
I remember my dad bringing one home and trying out on the hall carpet. It is a pity we could not keep the cleaners he bought home.
A friend of mine found one of these and has it as his own upright. It's a different name in Canada and the US...I want to say dial-a-matic, and we had one for a short time as well until my Mom bought a brand new Rainbow D4B back in the mid-80s. The units are fantastic little (yet heavy) machines. A word to the wise, Roger parts are pretty scarce for them as my friend bought the leftover stock for his from a vac shop in the city of London, Ontario here in Canada.
Happy new year
Love these Hoover’s too
I have the US Dial-A-Matic U6039 Version, it's quite a tank, and quite an interesting piece of vacuum history.
Well you cleaned the first clean air upright with the best clean air upright.
I would have been only 6 years old when this vacuum cleaner was made. You wont see many modern vacuum cleaners around in 50 or so years except maybe a Henry
I don't think the agitator is a replacement or the brushes. Mine has the same. By that time Hoover was using the stiffer red brushes. The agitator will not interchange with a American convertible. The gap for the belt is larger on the convertibles. Also, the agitator on the non self propelled DAMS is smaller. I have the similar US model. It's my only DAM. Good solid unit there!
Wow that is so cool
I'm not sure if you guys can buy it in the UK, but if you can try CLO2 (liquified chlorine dioxide) to retrobrite in lieu of 20vol peroxide. I'm a professional carpet/tile&grout cleaner and I find CL02 is a little more predictable on plastic surfaces. I usually mix 8oz/gal of water.
I can imagine the Leadbetters having one of those in The Good Life
Margo had an Electrolux cylinder.
Good video I got a Henry desk vacuum
Hi roger I love your videos❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
I don't know which I prefer more, the suction power of a machine or the agitation 🤔
You can 'retrobright' the plastic by sun brightening it Roger, far easier and less risky than using chemicals 😀
I retrobrighted it using an oxygen based stain remover powder and soaked the parts in it for a few hours. The yellow bits are now white and the front and back are more blue than green.
Question how is it the same but differences to a concept one
I have the Hoover convertible and it looks simmiler

This machine was made in the 1970’s so spare parts are very hard to get. You can find bags and sometimes belts and brushes on eBay.
