- The Hoover Junior in its may guises was a very popular vacuum cleaner in the UK and one of the most recognisable. People either owned one or knew someone that owned one as it was a budget priced vacuum with a decent performance, if you exclude hard floor cleaning that is.
This model looked quite clean in the eBay listing, but it was in far better condition than I could have hoped for and is currently my daily driver. I just need to dig out a set of cleaning tools so I can tackle above the floor cleaning.
The fact that there a still so many of these old Hoover Juniors on Ebay shows how well made they are.
Roger, I can't resist but when you said, "Fresh as a daisy" I was thinking, fresh as your dog.
This was mine, I got it a while back, restored it all, new cable, full strip, wash, polish, painted the brushroll really went to town on this one. I didn’t bypass the suppressor though, whoever bought it off me must of done that, I always leave them as they are.
The point of this message is the reason it is so immaculate is because it was mine. I spend too long on machines, it is ridiculous, one clearly has nothing better to do, lol.
I checked the photos of the U1012 I sold... The serial numbers are identical, even certain things like the sealant around the fan casing that was blobbed slightly was the same on the photos of mine, now that would be too much of a coincidence.
I don’t really know where I am going with this, lol, non of this really matters. Anyway, I enjoyed, good video, thanks as always.
What does it mean to bypass a suppressor?

@@Leoturner2009 They are still wise to have. They do still help. They are better to be replaced than bypassed. They only blow up if they are very old and or badly stored.
The Hoover growl- a real sound of the 70s!! Mum would know if you had Hoovered or not by the track marks it left. Happy days!!😀😀

Roger please read henene4's comment below - the suppressor bypass work is VERY dangerous and you could get electrocuted, or the wiring could short out and blow a fuse. Please dont use the machine until this totally dangerous bodge job has been properly insulated. BTW - you are right about the date code - 604 is indeed 4th month of 1976, April 1976 - quite a hot summer followed later that year!

I very rarely buy something after watching a review, or someone discussing something on youtube, as most people really are doing vids for all sorts of purposes, and just because they have a channel does not make them someone to listen too.
But after quite a few of your vids, i saw you have quite a bit of experience and are in a decent position to make reviews on the things like vacuums and carpet cleaners.
So cheers, thx for making the vids you did, they helped me buy two items, i probably would not of brought without your channel, pointing me, and others in that direction.
Normally i look at reviews of any product i buy after i brought them, as i prefer not to be swayed by reviews of things, and you never know who or why a person on youtube is making such vids. Most people are making reviews for all sorts of reasons, and most are not really qualified really to make such judgements on the products.
Glad to see, that taking a chance on your vids, your reviews overall have quite a honesty about them, and i am grateful for that. But i am glad, i deciding in your case, i will listen to your advice on vacuums, and carpet cleaners, and you were right in both cases, for the items i brought.
So thanks again for your vids. I am sure you must help a load of others pick and choose what may be best for them.

Thanks Roger! Just goes to show you, you really don’t need more than a 5amp (600 watt) motor in a traditional fan-first upright to get your carpets deep cleaned. The work is mostly done by the brush roll agitator, not high suction. Rolo chocolates!!! In honour of the old Hoover Juniors, I’ll have to stock up on those!!!!😋

Great video Roger, gotta love a retro Hoover, it's amazing to think that what James Spangler made from the bits he could find in the wardrobe(closet) of the department store he was a cleaner at, still remains the best way to get a carpet perfectly clean 203 years later 😁
Dirty fan type vacuums with beater bars should make a comeback in my opinion in modern form 👌
Who knows, had the Hepa flow bags that we have today existed when Sir James Dyson had a Hoover junior, the dual or multi Cyclonic vacs we have today may never have existed.
I use both a Numatic James(bagged vac) and a Dyson DC40 animal MK2 and like yourself I much prefer the bagged vac, cos it has more raw cleaning performance in my experience, far more airflow and suction 👍
I’ve been thinking about picking some form of vacuum up, I used to be obsessed but i’ve passed on to other things. Maybe i’ll get one of these some day just as a throwback :)
I found one of these on eBay and I wasn’t sure if I was going to get it but this made me want it again so I’ll leave now to go bid on it 😂

You ought to demonstrate the tools for this machine and do some above floor cleaning and watching the camera angle of the floor is so satisfying to watch the grit being beaten out. Good job and look forward to seeing more vintage Hoover’s.
Quick thing: Those parts of clear plastic over that surpressor bypass work are probably heat shrink that wasn't shrunk around the connectors.
Even if it isn't please properly insulate the connectors on there.
If they touch that would be a bad short and with plasti loose around them during vacuuming that could easily happen.
Would be a shame to see that beautiy blow up...
Yes you are right - that suppressor bypass wiring with exposed spade connectors under that loose fitting clear plastic sleeve, that falls off the connectors so easily is very bad indeed, and very likely that the metal connectors could short out. Hopefully if it does happen and there is a short from Live to Neutral, the fuse would blow in the plug instantly, with no more damage other than black scorch marks near where the connectors shorted out - BUT, if the live connector touches the metalwork of the handle bail then the whole handle could become live at 240V and Roger could be liable to be electrocuted if his hand touched the handle. OK there is a plastic handle at the top and the handle is metal but painted, so the risk is not as great as if the handle was bare metal, but the bypass wires and their exposed spade connectors need to be properly insulated against touching parts of the vacuum cleaner that could cause serious damage.

I felt I should just correct you on the (ticking Time Bonb) you do harp on about. Firstly ,yes you are correct that a suppressor is there to reduce sparking from the carbon brushes that contact the armature. However a sweet running and aligned armature,rarely would spark much ,so the effectiveness of the suppressor normally would make little difference, however they were fitted primarily so that the cleaners would pass radio interference requirements. I have repaired 100 of these in my job ,and VERY rarely do the give any trouble. So the (Ticking Time Bomb) is just a overreaction and if fitted should be left fitted.
Secondly suppressors are still fitted to most electrical equipment today .food mixers,drills,saws, hedge Trimmers,vacuums,strimmers ,and again this is to suppress sparking from the armature so that it complies with current radio interference regulations.
Finally unsuppressed equipment will still cause many issues with digital TVs ,such as freezing of picture,picture drop out and pixilation and breaking up of image.
So all equipment manufactured today that contain a brushed motor will have these,they might be a lot smaller and not the metal can style that was fitted in the past.
The Hoover junior 1036/1104/1108 still had suppressors fitted,they were of a inductive type and had red and blue sieving over them.
If you feel safer removing the suppressors,that’s you’re choice,but bare in mind that if you sell stuff on it might fall when PAT tested and won’t confirm to the radio interference regulators as intended.
Hi Roger, Beautiful Junior, The only concern I have is those wires that have been connected together from the suppressor, If those little sleeves move and the wires touch you will get a nasty bang and it will probably kill the motor, They need taping or heat shrinking, I would hate for it to happen!, Thanks Dylan.

As with nearly everything '70s, standard colors were shit brown(as shown here), piss yellow(the color of my family's Hoover used into the '80s), snot green, and puke orange.

I like this. I looked on eBay to see if one is available in the USA. There is one from Scotland, but that probably would not work on our AC current. I am wondering if maybe we did not have this model in the USA? I’m going to keep searching, but it doesn’t look promising so far.
A version of the Hoover Junior was available in the USA, but I think it’s pretty rare.

Never knew that the U1012 had a top fill tube! Confuses me that they went from the "13.." numbering system to a "U10.." system for a machine that looked so identical to its two predecessors 🤷🏼♂️Any one got any ideas ?

Those vinyl bags with the fabric backing woth the logo fused on, used between 1970 and 1980 you can wash to your hearts content and they don’t run or the logo comes off, they are really forgiving.
Suppressors weren't for reducing TV interference, they reduce the voltage and give a steady current to the motor. It's also a safety feature that stops electrical spikes and also keeps the motor from burning out.
I wonder why Hoover call them TV or TV and radio suppressors in many of the service manuals I have.

@@ibaisaic Just done some research, yes the vacuums are fitted with what's called a T.V Choke which was separate from the suppressor. However the later models used an incorporated T.V Choke which is included into today's earthed suppressors.

I believe the Hoover Junior was made in Britain because we had smaller houses than the USA and was easier to get round our smaller rooms than the larger "Senior" [I read that somewhere many years ago, also read many years ago that a "Which" test in 1962 said the junior was 75% effective ]

looks like it,s had a new mains cable fitted because of the blue and brown leads, would have been red and black back in the 70's, the bodge job on the connectors needs sorting out,but not difficult to correct
It may be a replacement cable, but the colours were changed from red and black to blue and brown in 1971.
@@ibaisaic what struck me was all the cables in the machine were red and black, loved the video, happy memories of the earlier all metal junior from my childhood, which i couldn't resist playing with as a kid

the powder on the rugs and carpet is awful for motors and fan i never use i t on my rugs if it gets in the motor it will ruin the bearing be carefull
The Sebo Duo powder is not like carpet freshening powders. I have used it for years with no problems.
