    Hey guys.
This is my longest video ever, and by far the one I've put the most time and energy into, and the only reason I can do that with an idea this weird, is the support I get on patreon, so first up, thank you to everyone who supports me, you make unreasonable projects like this possible, and second, if you liked this video and want to help support the slow decent into madness that has been this channel, you can do so at:
    www.patreon.com/Supereyepatchwolf
I'm also gonna be hosting a patron discord hang out in the near future where I talk to patrons one on one, so feel free to drop by for that (more info on my discord)
But as ever, whether you're a patron or not thanks for watching. I'm going to lie down for several days now, and spend a bit of time resting up cause I am burnt out in the next few weeks, and I hope you do the same.
Its a weird world out there, but thanks for checking out my videos, and ill see you in the new year.

The role of Jon in these always is fun to me; sometimes he’s a slave to Garfield, answering his every whim, other times, he’s the only person standing against Garfield’s omnipotence.

A thing I like about a good chunk of the Gorefield genre is the fact Jon is depicted as being brave enough to try and fight back, normally drawn with his shotgun or another type of weapon, Jon is face to face with a being beyond his understanding that wishes nothing more then to torment him, and it doesn't break his will to try and kill Garfield, the pieces that depict him as almost the last spark of humanity and existence really speak to me.

I keep coming back for The Forgiveness of Jon. Its so stupid that such an absolutely incredible piece of artwork is garfield fanart but at the same time it makes it so much better. The entire "Im sorry Jon" saga gives me "I have no mouth and I must scream" vibes. Trapped by something that has unconcievable amounts of control over you. The idea that Jon at the end not only wins, but forgives Garfield is horrifically beautiful.

It's like photoshopping the wheels off a car and going "look how shit this car is".

    • @Arrzarrina
      @Arrzarrina 2 роки тому +72

@@robotpanda77 The point is that Jon never actually hears anything from Garfield. Look at the middle step where Garfield is still present but his speech bubbles are removed. That doesn't work for Dilbert because the idea that this engineer is the only person in universe who communicates to anybody doesn't gel (especially considering that Dilbert uses a lot more dialogue).
Silent Garfield or Realistic Garfield do a much better job of getting the reader to understand Jon than the vanilla Garfield strips as they show the absolute disaster of a human being that Jon is without the intended punchline.

I can't shake the feeling that this wave of horror Garefield art, twisting something previously considered absolutely normal and inoffensive, is tied to the sociopolitical realities of today. In a sense, the post-2010s have been a time of "awakening" of society where everyone, willing or not, has been forced to confront a LOT of evils we have ignored for the past decades. Climate change being the most prominent, but also the numerous celebrity abuse scandals, the Epstein trial, the Panama Papers, the Pentagon Papers... it's the revelation of a deep rot that has always existed at the core of our society, that we have ignored for a long time.
And when so many people find out that so much of what was normal to them was hiding something dangerous and horrific that they'd been ignoring for so long... it feels very fitting to apply that frame of mind to everything. Including a comic strip about an asshole cat and his surprisingly dysfunctional owner. It's the same thing: it was there, in plain sight, for so long. And we never noticed, because it was all so normal to us...

When my Grandma moved house, she was going to get rid of the statue, but I held onto it for nostalgia's sake and it still sits on a shelf in my bedroom. • @Seeks_stuff
    @Seeks_stuff 2 роки тому +2865

The line "When you stare at something for long enough, it becomes... nothing" really hits deeper once I've finished watching this video. Rewatching the beginning, it seemed like a normal video that was going to give a little explanation about what happened to Garfield on the internet, and I would've never guessed that it would be so genuinely emotional by the end and that I would actually think of Garfield any differently from what I did before watching.
After listening and just seeing what Garfield has become, it felt more natural and real, it wouldn't have hit the same way if I just skipped to the end, I would think that is just silly and move on with my day. The video talked so much about Garfield's disturbing reality, that i've accepted that as something normal.
After we've seen something for long enough, it loses meaning. It becomes normal. We learn to live with it without any questioning. Like a 3 panel comic strip that will never stop repeating itself.

The observation is backwards, it was never nothing or everything, it's just, anything. All this stuff is just the same old, pretended to have a special meaning because Garfiield is injected into it. People looking at all of history and jsut say "it's boring", so "fandom" makes the same shit but with Garfield. Repetition is what organisms DO, and a repetitive comic strip is just the lowest common denominator of that.
The lie is that they get to be called "a fandom". They just include ONE semiotic symbol in their visual lexicon. For reference, EVERY ENGLISH WORD is such a symbol already. It's like, how many people latched onto the particle "the" and became fans of its function at making anything a noun. Suddenly Garfield is MORE original diversion because it's not The Garfield. And it easily could be, because speaking in nouns IS the most braindead way to live as a human being.
Toddlers point at things, and find the one interesting factor about it to be its name, recognizing it as a noun. "look mom, I recognize that visual, it's the Garfield again!" And toddlers cry when something eerie spooks them. So, most toddler-like people like the fact that "oh, it's just somebody doing the garfield thing again", so they don't have to engage with the material any further than that. Not see it for anything more that could possibly be going on. And create it for the purpose to NOT have anything more going on. It IS the exact same as publishing the strip for decades on end. It's THIS GENERATION being calcified, uninspired mass consumer of the new print media, internet.

The thing about pattern recognition is that it cannot occur if there isn't a pattern to be recognized. And Garfield is chief among those things which have established themselves as firm patterns in our daily lives. There is a very real reason why the pattern is evident in the first place statistically speaking, but the patterns themselves are frequently commonplace enough that we often fail to recognize them. So when we do notice them, it's surprising and odd to think that such a pattern has been so present outside of our awareness.

Just yesterday; I asked my future mother-in law - in tears, hopelessly, what would I do with my despair if I didn't keep it down with a dependency on food. For context, I am type 1 diabetic and have been _potentially_ a majority of my life but have only been diagnosed in 2022. My relationship with food, particularly foods that contain carbohydrates has been torn asunder as I was (and have been) subconsciously using food to sorta cope with major depression. Nothing to look forward to all day except... what I would be having for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. In that way, perhaps Garfield and I aren't too dissimilar. So, when I reached the end of the video, and saw Jon forgive this, embodiment of his despair and torment (particularly connected to gluttony and sloth) thus vanquishing it from him....
I guess, I feel like I wish I could be that strong. Find a way to forgive my emptiness and let my need to fill it go. Maybe it'll hurt for a long time, but I'll find something healthier to fill it with eventually.

The "Garfield without Garfield" comics are interesting. Due to the lack of the titular character, we get to see more of John's reality, but it also drastically changes the context of some strips. Eventually she became frustrated and disillusioned with the comic as it became stale and repetitive. But she also had a fantastically dark sense of humor and thought the "Garfield without Garfield" comics were brilliant. As a lifelong fan of Lovecraft and Stephen King she would have loved the existential horror elements that developed later.

Having said that, the forgiveness of Jon is indeed able to present a focused, concise, and incredible mete narrative which doesn't have the major issue plaguing the original painting - the disunity of various denominations reinforcing their own interpretations, hence repetitively enforcing a very difficult meta narrative to get nuance from.

I feel a nihilistic emptiness because of this video. But somehow, I also feel fulfilled. Garfield doesn't even exist. When his creator, Jim Davis, dies, he will persist without any form of inconvenience. Jim has no control over Garfield. He can only continue to feed it, Garfield is now controlled by the masses, an amorphous Lovecraftian concept that ends lives and consumes fantasies. When the heat death of the universe occurs, Garfield may still have some traces of his presence on the earth.

I think something super interesting about “The forgiveness of Jon” that I haven’t really seen anyone mention is that given the huge meta narrative being set of Garfield having Jon eternally tormented in different ways makes this supposedly ending scene being named “The forgiveness of Jon” mean so much more. I suppose it can be an interpretation that Jon’s tears come from the overwhelming joy of freedom but I think It might be more tears of sadness and remorse. Jon knows what he has to do, but even after all of the torture, pain, and suffering caused, Jon still forgives Garfield. Even after it all, it’s still his cat.

@eternal wait, I do enjoy your interpretation of the image, and i agree that the tears can symbolize freedom. One perspective for me is Garfield is figuratively the manifestation of despair and the title "i'm sorry john", is almost john himself having pity of how much of a loser he perceives himself to be, and the "forgiveness of john" is john finding inner strength to forgive himself, thus conquering despair and his depression. His tears are of the pain he has endured and of beauty in which he has given himself a new look at life.

Garfield is actually very reminiscent of Nurgle from Warhammer 40k. The theme of giving in utterly to despair and death, but at the same time being perfectly and completely okay with that has a lot of parallels with Plaguefather worshippers. Even the descriptions of Nurgle and his followers being bloated, grotesque masses fits perfectly with Garfield's portrayal as an obscenely fat cat. And just as Nurgle spreads his "gifts" of plague and decay in an attempt to make as many people as possible give up like he has given up, and thus turn to his worship as a way to take away the pain of their conditions, so Garfield abuses Jon and constantly attempts to emphasize how pathetic he really is, because Jon's despair and misery empowera Garfield and makes him ever larger and more nightmarish.

I love the forgiveness of Jon. Everything else Jon has tried, bullets, suffering, killing himself, running away… none of it has worked. The only thing that does, the only thing that helps finally kill Garfield is forgiveness. He forgives himself for feeling bad and he forgives Garfield. Garfield might not have been sorry, and that’s not what matters, because Jon has finally let him go. Jon felt like he needed Garfield but Garfield actually needs Jon. Because without jons despair… who is he? Who is Garfield. Nothing. Garfield might be Jon’s entire reality but Jon is everything to Garfield, he is Garfields host. Garfield is Jon’s despair and Jon forgives it, and it goes away.

So in contrast to how some people see Jim Davis, as a greedy capitalist who calculated a very marketable character and therefore cracked the code of tricking people out of their money; he was a struggling artist whose bug comic failed and so he created a deeply personal series inspired by himself and his own struggles, and found that his audience... liked the cat better. I've seen UA-camrs grapple with the fact that people like watching their pets, that viewers stay engaged if their pet appears on screen. Jim Davis grappled with that discovery decades ago, swallowed his pride, and made the cat the title character. And told people he totally designed the cat on purpose you guys, it was all part of the plan. And Jon is a miserable sad sack.
Garfield doesn't make me laugh out loud, most comics don't, but it does make me smile. And Jon is relatable often enough that I feel for him. I hope Jim Davis doesn't relate too strongly to Jon these days, he's done a lot of work that's made people smile, and he deserves to be happy.

Speaking as a child of the 80's; to understand Garfield's popularity, you have to understand the time that Garfield immerged from. It was the late 70's - early 80's. There was no internet. We as a nation here in the US were still coming off of the (largely waning) "jovial sit-com era" of television. Everything prior was a sort of Leave It To Beaver or The Cosby Show sort of formula.
You have a happy family > family encounters a (usually moral) dilemma > by episode's end family resolves dilemma and is happier and stronger for having done so.
Outside of the nightly news, nearly all television prior to the late 70's followed this formula.
Garfield was popular for the very same reason Married With Children and The Simpsons were popular. It showed us all, largely for the first time in the mainstream, that relatable cynicism could be humorous. And incidentally all three franchises took off like a rocket in popularity because of this.

THIS! This is what almost nobody seems to realize about Garfield nowadays; Garfield was not some safe middle-of-the-road comedy when it first came out; it stood out amongst the competition because of it's cynical, Bill Murray-esque snarkiness. Jon was a kind of pathetic (though he would definitely grow more pathetic over the years) average Joe, and Garfield was this mean quick-witted little bastard that took joy in breaking his owner down by pointing out his sad state of being over and over again. It was pretty fucking hardcore as far as mainstream comedy usually went in those days.

The most impressive part of Sex Survey Results is that not only did they individually say "[name], who?" in response to every single caller by name, but they also individualized responses to people who said slightly different things (like the one woman who first asked "i'm supposed to say how many sexual partners I've had?" and Jon responding with "yes, that's right) and even included joke call-ins with individualized responses to those as well (ranging from the person answering the door getting the joke when someone introduces themself as "hugh jass" or "hugh mongous" to specialized, appropriate responses to people who didn't answer the question in the slightest, like one person who goes on a semi-joke rant insulting lasagna cat or the other person who just says "i want to die"). Been a john just as long, but nothing wrong with accepting His first interpterion of Garfield, an acceptance of Depression and Nihilism, or how I prefer to say "getting over it". You don't have to succeed to be happy, that's a toxic train of thought that doesn't get talked about enough. Giving up is 100% a-ok. And don't let a bunch of brain chiropractors or some neurotypicals autism project (that was deep and profound) tell you that you have to succeed to be happy. I could do without the Positive End message of some Neurotypical who probably only went through Brief situational depression telling everyone to get help. Personally I say be a Garfield, let others work hard while you reap and relax in the repeatable entertainment that comes from a bunch of apparently depressed people born on the right side of the spectrum in what is arguably the best time period to ever exist. You don't need to accomplish jack shit, and thinking you have to is not healthy.
