They did it. This weekend, Ireland secured just their fourth Grand Slam as they overcame both a once-in-a-lifetime nerves and a much-improved England to take the title on home soil. So how did Ireland secure it, what can England take from the game, and just how good are the boys in green?

Funniest line I EVER heard in a rugby video: "Much like the version of Irish history I was taught in school, I haven't really mentioned anything that England did!" Bravo Sir! 😂😂😂
Another good one was "more executions than if Henry the eighth went on tinder"
@@rory6984 I came in to call that comment out 🤣 Brilliant
Brilliant line in fairness
Purely here for the 400 different ways Squidge can formulate Jinglejam Sexpot
Jingle-boy Sex Wallet
No he means Jogging On Sextuplets
Junglegym Sockdrawer?
Has anyone written a list of Sexpot names?
There is a video out there with his numerous variations, I think it’s out of date by now
as an Irish fan I can't wait to take this video the wrong way.
jokes aside, great stuff over the comp, thanks for the content
Another Irish fan here. Disappointed to see/hear/read that people are giving personal abuse over your videos Squidge. The videos are hilarious but also have given me as a casual fan a deeper understanding of many aspects of games. Keep up the great work
lol, this made me chuckle outloud in work.
I actually haven't seen any negative responses from Irish people. If there is, those lads need to cop on, squidge is a legend among men.
Single best rugby channel for how teams are really playing the game.. best break downs and analysis by far.
Love the play by play style.
Clicked on this video faster than Bundee Aki stole that lady’s chicken in New Zealand
😂😂
That was the best turn over ever 😂😂😂
He stole all of NZ's Chicken
Great Post 😂
"much like the version of Irish history I was taught in school: I haven't really mentioned anything England did." As an Irish person, I laughed so fucking hard at this. BRILLIANT.
I figured you'd do one, but the Jambalaya Sexpot tribute came a bit earlier than expected, and it was genuinely moving. Suspect you'll miss making up those names when he's hung up the boots...I know we will! Thanks for the tip of the head to one of our greats, and thanks for the brilliant analysis. A lot of pundits had pointed out the repeated short side work done by Ireland, but showing how they utilized England's own work rate to set it up was fascinating. You, like your vids, are class.
Well said
👌🏻
“Much like the version of Irish history I was taught at school, I haven’t really mentioned anything that England did…” brilliant 😂
In fairness, this was battling performance from England. Credit to their fans as well who have taken this defeat in good spirits.
Better than they took the loss to France, certainly. Booing your own guys off the pitch has to be the absolute height of poor sportsmanship.
@@Formakiwi they boo'd cos they gave up and were routed for it vs Fr.. or at least how they see it (generalisation.. always exceptions)
I think england played very hard. Their work rate was immense, along with their aggression at the ruk, gave Ie lots of issues.
I think the biggest issue ive seen anyone having is the red card and what effect it may have had if it was, in their view, more reasonable at a yellow or warning.
Madness when people think you shouldn't be punished for putting yourself in a dangerous situation and have that level of an impact to the head and get anything other than red.
BoD worded why he thought it was the right call v well and other En pundits have said they are shocked he said it and argue it was just a rugby incident.. I really hope any appeal is rejected with the clarification that any incident like this is avoidable and punishable..
England didn't get smashed because Ireland was tensed from the very beginning. It's not England that did a great performance, but Ireland that feared to miss the event. Then, they got things the right way and England completely disappeared, again.
Nice finish on Sexton. Respect where its due, class.
Who’s Sexton?
@@TakenWithout fly-half and Captain of the Irish team. He'll be retiring after the World Cup.
It’s pronounced Jamjar sextrumpet
@@TakenWithout You mean Sextuplets Tinklepop?
@@TakenWithout :)
What a beautiful tribute to not just Irish rugby, but rugby in general.
You’re work in this tournament has been exceptional as always. Keep up the good work, it’s much appreciated!
Squidge's joking beef with the Irish fanbase in previous videos put to one side, this was really nice to watch and listen to as a proud Irishman. So thank you
I mainly come to Squidge for the latest update on Andy Farrell’s Adventures in Squarespace.
But the rugby analysis is not bad either.
It;s the dog within the dog - the b-roll / tiny one-screen comments are all magic dust that make Spuidge (and co) the bloody best
Finally a squidge love letter to Ireland 😂😂
“Ribbons torn to…. Daves” 5:25
😂 Absolutely brilliant. I didn’t see it coming and it gave me a good laugh
Just one point of information: Jackie Kyle may have been the star performer back in 1948 but he was not the Irish captain. That was Karl Mullen, who also captained the 1950 Lions to New Zealand.
rob kearney said on tv that day he was speaking to some of the players leading up to this game , and they told him this was the most nervous they had ever been for a match
"Much like the version of Irish history I was taught in school, I haven't really mentioned anything that England did."
This actually explains a lot.
“Between Curry and Ribbons… which sounds like a party to me.” genius sir, genius
More effortless execution than if Henry VIII joined tinder! 😂
I found myself tearing with your tribute to Sexfingers at the end. Fingers crossed that it is the case.
Thanks for your 2023 6N videos, Squidge.
The Henshaw try reminded me of a try Australia rugby league scored in the 2004 tri-nations final. Two passes right then as the Great Britain defence is moving right, the ball went left catching the defenders wrong footed. So simple yet effective.
Well that wud make sense cuz Farrell does have kinda brought some aspects of league to this team. I'm not saying Ireland play league but I'm saying their 1 or 2 things u do see in rugby league and u see Ireland do
@@johnilbehonest Yes, and Andy played in that game as well, so maybe he remembered that move.
Thank you Squidge for all your hard work through the tournament , always brilliant analytics with a twist.
FYI First Time on “home soil” (given that the Irish rugby team has traditionally/mercifully been beyond sectarianism) was in Ravenhill 1948 (N.I. aka ‘Norn Iron’)
Some fool tried to argue with me that it wasn’t a grand slam as it was the 5N then :/
Still a slam, chap was talking out his arse
@@BirrDetonator1989 not bad someone saying Ireland only won 1 slam in six nation’s history 😂😂
@@deanflynn3745 that's just stupidity 😆
Absolutely - my late uncle was in the crowd roaring Jack Kyle, Karl Mullen, and Mick O'Flanagan on . . .
4 nations then
Well done Ireland....a team for the ages
Speaking of work rate, your videos are always top class and come out super fast!
Looking forward to getting knocked out in the QFs :D
send him money
@@leeponzu I would but I cannae. He'd have a wheelbarrow of cash if I wasn't so poor.
Pool B will be a dogfight. Tonga and Romania haven't a prayer but they'll still provide bruising physical contests, and Scotland will be desperate not to bomb in the pools for second time in a row. On recent results, you'd expect Ireland to top the pool but SA are always a stalking horse in World Cups. Regardless whoever emerges from those early rounds will be battered going into the quarters. Gonna be something.
Best commentary I've seen, again, by far. Your technical explanations give a whole new dimension to the game for me. Thanks and can't wait for your world cup analysis.
he swings around to Ireland's side without changing bind.
*Changes left hand bind immediately after
Great video. Nice tribute to Sexton at the end, how he can still play at the highest level at 38 is beyond me
It's amazing how beautifully Ireland play with decoys. Your don't notice any of that live because it's all moving so fast and it all looks so simple, but when you break it down here, it looks so beautiful what they're doing
Finally a video on Ireland!
19:46 I never thought I would see the day. Thankyou Squidge
You make rugby feel so planned and strategized when I thought it was just random. Amazing work, thanks.
Hit the notification quicker than Freddie Steward’s red card got overturned
overturned?
@kamikazejaffa no wayy, could have used that decision in game hahaha
Faster than Alonso's penalty penalty got overturned.
This is brilliant, thanks Squidge! Absolutely love seeing how intricate tries that look fairly straightforward actually are
Shocked you're not giving out again.. thought maybe this time it would be that there isn't enough Ireland in one video for you 😂
Ok, you really are the Goat of commentators. The level of detail you have and relay is stunning. Really appreciate your work and channel.
Great work through the tournament. Lovely video and expertly put together.
11:28 "all without changing his mind" - immediately shows Willis blatantly changing his bind
Excellent, entertaining and informative analysis. As an Irishman, I started the game on the edge of my seat, and quickly became so nervous that I had to stand up and walk around the room, as the well-oiled machine was sputtering a bit in the opening phases. Bu Ireland had too much skill and pace, too many plays (as you have so ably described), and too much fitness, and too much desire to succumb to the pressure they were obviously feeling in front of a packed Aviva Stadium with Millions of us tuning in on TV.
I picked my team of the championship, which actually honestly and objectively contained only Irish and French. There have been some pieces covering the question of how many Irish players are the best in the world at their position, and there is a strong argument that this number extends to at least a handful (Furlong, van der Flier, Doris, Sexton and Keenan), but we also had standout performances during the 6N from Hansen, Lowe, Ryan, Iain Henderson, Gibson-Park (when he got his chance), Dan Sheehan, and Peter O'Mahony who is still strong and fit and skilful enough to have kept Conan out of the starting XV. One of the great strengths of the team has become wonderful depth, as Ireland did not miss a step even after all the injury woes. The future's bright - on to the World Cup!!!
Brilliant analysis as always! You made me feel a lot better about this performance, it was maddening in real time!
Interesting bit about the lions passing over James Ryan in 2021. Gatland recently said he opted out for personal reasons. Feels weird for him to make that public, and Ryan might not have been a guaranteed starter, but it’s good to know he would’ve made the squad otherwise (I assume)
✨Wow Excellent Vid Squidge! Masterful storytelling with a touch of humour and magic … and a happy ending. Well done …and thanks! ✨🏆🎉💫😅
It's like WATCHING WALES
Omg I was laughing for an entire minute
Brilliant vid again.
As an Ireland fan, your comment about the game being similar to the 2011 rwc final was literally a thought I had watching the match itself.
This is brilliant. The analysis on the first try is top class, I've not seen that level of detail highlighted by anyone else. Brilliant video.
Thanks for that , very well put together.
Genius squidge - I loved the learning about English joke 😂
I’m not sure what it is about ya boy but I’ve been looking forward to your Irish England match analysis all week.. and you haven’t disappointed. I can’t wait for the World Cup and your twist on match reports. Good lad .. keep up the good work.
yeah the problem with the (rescinded) red was that it created space, which was exploited as the game went on, not least with England down to 13. It fucked the whole event basically, and the massive inconsistencies we're seeing do not bode well for the WC.
Nice one Squidge. Love the sign off for Sexton
Minor correction: Jack Kyle was a the outhalf on the 1948 Grand Slam team for Ireland, but the captain was Karl Mullen.
Was just coming to say this. They're fondly remembered as Jackie Kyle's team but the great Karl Mullen was indeed the captain.
Touching tribute to Johnny, made me tear up.
One of your absolute best mate, some hilarious one-liners and cracking analysis! Keep it up!
Really incredible video. Actually brought a little tear to my eye at the end.
Really enjoyed this. Thanks!
Another fantastic video. Was shocked that the ref didn't spot the numerous forward kicks in this game though.
Fantastic analysis as ever, Squidge! Chapeau, monsieur!
Effortless execution, like if Henry VIII joined Tinder
brilliant! Love it...keep it up...incl. the humour
Fair play Squidge, another excellent analysis with effortless hilarity. 👏👏👏🏆☘️
Beautiful analysis as ever!!
Excellent breakdown of each play, so enjoyable to watch, keep them coming,
And watching Ireland is so easy on the eye, ☘️🇮🇪🏉
Thank you Squidge, wonderful analysis.
Excellent review and analysis
Brilliant as always. I even like the advertisement. There is no move that you miss! A total education to watch. Well done.
as a French fan, and considering the controversy surrounding Steward's red card, I find the references to the 2011 Finals of the RWC somewhat surprising, especially coming from such a rugby connoisseur like Sir Squidge. that 2011 game is famously known for particularly dubious referreeing from Craig Joubert, something I've seen discussed (and criticized) at length, even outside French circles. so I can't help and wonder if there's no innuendo lying underneath, or if I'm projecting too much there.
congratulations to Ireland on the Grand Slam, they were a notch above everybody else, and certainly didn't need any help from the men with the whistles.
Spot on
That last couple of minutes gave me goosebumps, great tribute
Superb video as always.
Thank you , excellent. The best on UA-cam.
Every video analysis is spot on and informative and I learn a lot about the game watching them fair play
Absolutely love your reviews.. keep them up. Squarespace rules
Congratulations to Jonny sexton a wonderful six nations career
Absolutely fantastic analysis young man I never saw it that way greetings from Ireland
Pure class video. Thank you so much
I enjoyed it immensely, thank you Squidge.
Brilliant analysis once again. Well done ! The English defence was excellent on Saturday and just what Ireland needed, building for the WC. Thanks, England. 🎉
Wow brilliant analysis again, keep up the great work
Great analysis, well done. Of course all the top teams at the WC will now be analysing what Ireland do and working out how to stop it, and also how to do it themselves, which will make the WC much tougher than the 6N. Can Ireland move to another level?
Indeed a brilliant analysis.. I thought you would pick up on us trying the play that got us the try on France with Doris doing a crash, fly half to tighthead back inside to Hugo to run it home. I saw Doris do the exact same shuffle before the crash and thought.. here we go! Only furlong fluffed the pass.
Great watch. Super analysis
Brilliant Stuff, love your analysis
History class line was nice 👏👏🇮🇪🤣
"...more effortless execution than Henry VIII if he joined Tinder."
I see you smiling behind the keyboard, Mr Squidge.
Great analysis. No one does it like you, Squidge
Squidge was nice to Ireland; I could cry. Not a single back-handed compliment did I detect.
Nice John Pullin reference, Squidgey.
Wow, Squidge, you outdone yourself mate, thanks a million. Cheers from a happy Paddy living in Paris, hélas/alas unable to procure any effing RWC tix
Can I just say as a grumpy irishman that squidge makes the best Irish rugby content, along with the legendary tom savage. Sorry you get so much shite from Irish fans, but please never stop talking about us and making silly puns for Jonny
Yh, if he could just dump those stupid puns i‘d actually warm to his wisecrack
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ as usual 🐙 ge.. you 💅 ed it... 💚. 🇮🇪
The ball in play law changes have really helped rugby 🏉 as a spectacle, but it's also suiting 🇮🇪 Ireland's fitness and game plan.
As an Irishman watching this game gave me so much anxiety, I was convinced half the lads had decided to play for England given that they seemed determined to politely hand the ball directly to them. HOWEVER the positive I took away from it was that even at our worst (because this was easily our worst game for quite some time) they STILL were very dominant, still creating really good quality attacks (and then immediately giving the ball away) and still overall the better team so even at us playing bad, is still playing really good..
Also huge credit to England, honestly not too surprised, I legit think if France hadn't annihilated them, they wouldn't have been as good, but they did a great job of disrupting the Irish and getting in their heads.
Just to set the record straight, it was Karl Mullen who Captained Ireland’s first Grand Slam.
Oh and best rugby channel out there. 💪🏻
In Ireland as well, I know it was the north but you know what I mean
Squidge rugby is like a chess Grandmaster, he see ever move 👌
Great video to end the champ. Love those extra little bits that I would never ever see even on 2nd 3rd or even 4th viewing!
No meantion of VDF's early days playing barefoot on the the veld though.... ;-)
Made me tear up a little as an Irishman, thank you.
Finally some love for Johnny!
Sorry Squidge, Brian O'Driscoll will never be forgotten! ;)
Great and entertaining analysis as always.
In BOD we trust
A fit Stuart McInally is maybe the only other hooker (from the northern hemisphere nations anyway) that I can think of who might have the pace for that Sheehan try.
Ireland were something else this tournament and massively deserving of the grand slam, World Cup is going to be interesting!
You nearly had me tearing up at the end, being so nice about Sexton.
Both sides really fought for it. Cracking match
I made the same mistake myself, but Ireland never having won a Grand Slam in Dublin before =/= never having won at home before. They won the Grand Slam in 1948 in Ravenhill in Belfast.
