One of the greats. Saturday's Six Nations match for the ages saw Andy Farrell's Ireland cement themselves as the top team in the world right now as they defeated defending champions France. So how did they do it, and just how good are either side?

To add to your conclusion about France : at the end of the match, Galthié smiled. He's not someone who smiles a lot, in fact he more or less never does, even after wins he doesn't, but after this loss, he did. We all thought he'll be pissed and scream at his players, but his post-match talk was the opposite : he told them he was proud of them. Nobody wants to loose, but in the grand scheme of things, France probably needed to loose once before the World Cup and it feels like he knew it. This was the best way to loose and the best opponent to loose against, now the pressure is off and it'll be a lot of good things for the world cup to come.

And every. single. one. was happy about that.
Everyone wants this team to win where it matters and there seemed to be a consensus that for that to happen, they had to comw down from their cloud and lose in order to get into the WC hungrier than ever.

@@GreedIsGuud I'm in Ireland and that "try" has been talked about and analysed to death here. The general consensus is (in hindsight) that it wasn't a try and his foot was in touch but that the tackle on Herring was a red card so it's swings and roundabouts. They also say the tackle taking Lowe out had no wrapping attempted so a penalty try could have been awarded with conversion. I'm not saying I agree with all those points, I'm saying (over here anyway) I'm fed up hearing them disect them to pieces and appreciate Squidges detailed analysis of the other points in the match. It was a great match and ultimately I don't believe different decisions from the ref would have affected the outcome. I think the better team won on the day. That being said I wouldn't relish meeting the French in the WC. They're a fantastic team and would be very difficult to beat at home. For the 1st time in my life I'd prefer to meet the All Black's.

@@GreedIsGuud It was given because of extraordinary circumstances. Not only did Lowe's foot need to have not touched the ground but also the ball needed to have been grounded without touching the in-goal touchline. Both were ridiculously close calls. Unbelievably good fortune for Ireland that there was no "clear and obvious" reason not to award the try, although there was a reverse angle shown subsequently that gave more weight to the view that Lowe's foot did touch the ground.

Everyone seems to be talking about France taking a drop goal as admitting defeat. As an Irishman who has spent almost half his life in France, that is absolutely NOT what I was thinking when they got the drop goal. I was thinking France wanted to keep within a converted try of winning, and trust themselves to get that try under the posts at the end to win. I have seen it happen from France and French clubs countless times.
I love the win, and performance in that game, it was a joy to watch, but lets not do France a disservice by suggesting they capitulated early. And also, lets not do a disservice to Irelands game in the last 20 or so minutes by suggesting France conceded defeat already.

Two short points I noticed from Saturday.
    1. The French were gassed at the end of the first half and they were out on their feet with 10 mins of the 2nd half left.
    2. The French don't have an attacking system outside of their dependency on the boot and broken play.
The first 40 mins of that game was some of the greatest 6 Nations rugby I've ever seen played.

    • @kieranhanrahan2883
      @kieranhanrahan2883 2 роки тому +2

The French were gassed, due to the well recorded length of time the ball was in play ( > 46 minutes). What is surprising is that France kicked to keep the ball in play, all thru the match, even when they were gassed and despite their lineout taking Ireland to the cleaners twice. That suggests a lack of tactical flexibility?

If heartbreak is a motivation, we Irish have had it in world cups always playing below our best. There's a different feeling about this Irish team. Thanks as always Squidge for the insights. Those dark arts you reveal are amazing. I always feel so naïve after watching them!
I was a little surprised you didn't mention the pace of the game more. The first 40 was lightening fast. Slower of course in the second half. I read somewhere that the ball-in-play time was 46 minutes for the game against an average of 38 (not sure if that is a general international average or a SN average).
Given that Ireland conceded an average (already feel like I'm over-using that word!) of 8kg per man in the pack, I was very happy as an Irish supporter with the solidity of their scrum. I was more than happy with the in-play collisions where I felt we came out on top overall (see, I didn't say average there but got the meaning across!).
But more importantly when you have large Irish forwards playing French giants (Antonio 147kg!!!!), surely Ireland planned to use their fast game (albeit without Gibson Park who excels as the number 9 for that game plan) to run the socks off the French? In the last 20 minutes many French players were out on their feet, panting heavily, and it seemed to me that Farrell chose that time to send on Gibson Park-playalike Casey, who upped the tempo to make the Irish size/fitness advantage pay off. Doris, not exactly a waif, was imperious in the last 15 minutes. He seemed still fresh and energetic and took the pick-and-go game to the French and exploited their fatigue. French players play too many games between international and club rugby. , perhaps French players are, in general, less fit. Any combination of these factors leaves them vulnerable at the WC and Ireland may have just shown some other countries how to beat them.
Perhaps the most pleasing thing from an Irish perspective was that the bench made a really positive impact, which has not often been the case. Ross Byrne controlled the last 32 minutes superbly and neophytes such as Tom O'Toole made big carries that helped Ireland impose themselves in the final period.
You have often made the point that Ireland in the past have peaked in the lead up to World Cups, and then failed (oh God, have we failed!). But I see a huge difference between this team and Joe Schmidt's team. They believe in the system, believe in the smarts of their coaches and are allowed to play what is in front of them without being automatons. I feel this approach is far more likely to get Ireland further in the WC than before, albeit we have a truly difficult group and path. But your points about the French trying out stuff are very insightful.
Ok, last point. I also read that the French spent just 57 seconds in the Irish 22 versus over 9 minutes for the Irish in their 22. Ireland also had 4 held up tries, so if they had been more patient or smarter, (or if the French defence wasn't epic), they could have been well out of sight long before the Ringrose try. The fact that the French felt they had to resort to drop goals was somewhat telling, no?
It was very important for Farrell's Ireland to beat France as they had not previously done so. In the final analysis I think Ireland won far more comprehensively than the score shows. I just hope we don't let Finn Russel do his magic hen we meet Scotland!

I think one thing not being commented on is that I think if France and Ireland face each other again the officiating will also decide the match a bit. Wayne Barnes tends to let things flow and really swallows his whistle but France tends to work best on turnover ball when it's chaotic. France couldn't contest nearly as many rucks as they normally do because very little was being called on either side during rucks. I think if you get a sir that will call sealing the ruck more frequently you'll get a different game, you'd also probably see Antonio sent off with a red card but ultimately was a great game and hope there is a rematch for the world cup.

Wayne Barnes made the French Try. He interrupted the attempted French kick ( I'm surprised that "Squidge" missed that, Ireland where set for the return kick), and from there a bit of crazy (get out of jail) play went the way of the French!
It could just have easily been an Irish try (bounce of the ball). I love Squidge , but I feel he has given the French too much respect in that passage of play ! Replay that move ,that led to the French try ,and we can all see that Wayne Barnes instigated the try. It was not a pre arranged French move . It was a desperate attempt by the French to get out of a hole. Wayne Barnes was in the way of the return kick. The French were looking to kick back from Hansen, Wayne Barnes got in the way . Replay the move and try to convince me that it was a French pre-planned play, rather than a lucky break from broken play!
