One of the greats. Saturday's Six Nations match for the ages saw Andy Farrell's Ireland cement themselves as the top team in the world right now as they defeated defending champions France. So how did they do it, and just how good are either side?

To add to your conclusion about France : at the end of the match, Galthié smiled. He's not someone who smiles a lot, in fact he more or less never does, even after wins he doesn't, but after this loss, he did. We all thought he'll be pissed and scream at his players, but his post-match talk was the opposite : he told them he was proud of them. Nobody wants to loose, but in the grand scheme of things, France probably needed to loose once before the World Cup and it feels like he knew it. This was the best way to loose and the best opponent to loose against, now the pressure is off and it'll be a lot of good things for the world cup to come.

@@IsGuuud I'm in Ireland and that "try" has been talked about and analysed to death here. The general consensus is (in hindsight) that it wasn't a try and his foot was in touch but that the tackle on Herring was a red card so it's swings and roundabouts. They also say the tackle taking Lowe out had no wrapping attempted so a penalty try could have been awarded with conversion. I'm not saying I agree with all those points, I'm saying (over here anyway) I'm fed up hearing them disect them to pieces and appreciate Squidges detailed analysis of the other points in the match. It was a great match and ultimately I don't believe different decisions from the ref would have affected the outcome. I think the better team won on the day. That being said I wouldn't relish meeting the French in the WC. They're a fantastic team and would be very difficult to beat at home. For the 1st time in my life I'd prefer to meet the All Black's.

Not only did Lowe's foot need to have not touched the ground but also the ball needed to have been grounded without touching the in-goal touchline. Both were ridiculously close calls. Everyone seems to be talking about France taking a drop goal as admitting defeat. As an Irishman who has spent almost half his life in France, that is absolutely NOT what I was thinking when they got the drop goal. I was thinking France wanted to keep within a converted try of winning, and trust themselves to get that try under the posts at the end to win. I have seen it happen from France and French clubs countless times.
I love the win, and performance in that game, it was a joy to watch, but lets not do France a disservice by suggesting they capitulated early. And also, lets not do a disservice to Irelands game in the last 20 or so minutes by suggesting France conceded defeat already.

Wayne Barnes made the French Try. He interrupted the attempted French kick ( I'm surprised that "Squidge" missed that, Ireland where set for the return kick), and from there a bit of crazy (get out of jail) play went the way of the French!
It could just have easily been an Irish try (bounce of the ball). I love Squidge , but I feel he has given the French too much respect in that passage of play ! Replay that move ,that led to the French try ,and we can all see that Wayne Barnes instigated the try. It was not a pre arranged French move . It was a desperate attempt by the French to get out of a hole. Wayne Barnes was in the way of the return kick. The French were looking to kick back from Hansen, Wayne Barnes got in the way . Replay the move and try to convince me that it was a French pre-planned play, rather than a lucky break from broken play!

Great video as usual. Truly great. And what a game. One of the best in the past 12 months.
As a french supporter, I cannot help but be incredibly happy about this result. Our team had been struggling in the past few months : the games against Australia, South Africa and Italy were wins... but not clear one. They had felt like we won despite being the weaker side.
This loss came at the right time, against the right opponent.
I cannot wait for the world cup, especially with that super strong Ireland team. :)

Two short points I noticed from Saturday.
    1. The French were gassed at the end of the first half and they were out on their feet with 10 mins of the 2nd half left.
    2. The French don't have an attacking system outside of their dependency on the boot and broken play.
The first 40 mins of that game was some of the greatest 6 Nations rugby I've ever seen played.

    • @kieranhanrahan2883
      @kieranhanrahan2883 Рік тому +2

The French were gassed, due to the well recorded length of time the ball was in play ( > 46 minutes). What is surprising is that France kicked to keep the ball in play, all thru the match, even when they were gassed and despite their lineout taking Ireland to the cleaners twice. That suggests a lack of tactical flexibility?

I think the world cup will be won by one of four teams, France, New Zealand, South Africa or Ireland. If heartbreak is a motivation, we Irish have had it in world cups always playing below our best. There's a different feeling about this Irish team. I live and hope, but along with France, we've upset South Africa and New Zealand recently. They will bounce back with a fury. Ireland need to be much better come the autumn

I thought keenan and Doris were exceptional, JVDF was his usual world class self, both sets of 9+10 excellent and a big mention to ringrose for producing one of the great performances; I still think he is criminally underrated and is slowly building himself as the best centre in the world!
France were still great, but just looked out on their feet after 50 minutes. There substitutes weren’t as good as Irelands

I think one thing not being commented on is that I think if France and Ireland face each other again the officiating will also decide the match a bit. Wayne Barnes tends to let things flow and really swallows his whistle but France tends to work best on turnover ball when it's chaotic. France couldn't contest nearly as many rucks as they normally do because very little was being called on either side during rucks. I think if you get a sir that will call sealing the ruck more frequently you'll get a different game, you'd also probably see Antonio sent off with a red card but ultimately was a great game and hope there is a rematch for the world cup.
