  • In this week's video, I am showing how I prune my Forest Pansy redbud trees (Cercis canadensis 'Forest Pansy') and I made a huge mistake! I'm sharing and important lesson learned.
Properly pruning your trees will help keep them in the right shape and form. Redbud trees bloom in Spring. The best time to prune them is after they've bloomed. Keep in mind you can and should prune to remove dead branches anytime of the year.
I hope you find this video helpful. Thanks for watching.

Very helpful, thanks so much. As my mother used to say, it's good to learn from your mistakes, but even better to learn from OTHER peoples' mistakes!

Thanks for watching. Indeed...it is better to learn from other people's mistakes, isn't it?

My teacher once told me: "Man learns from other's mistakes, and monkey learns from his mistakes."
I was the monkey of course 😂

Thank you! I have one forest pansy over my patio and plan on planting another to bridge the two. I'm young and new to this and want to make sure to protect the trees and protect my investment! Your video was helpful. ❤

The previous owner of our home planted a hundred red buds. I prune them with my chainsaw, real close to the ground.

Many times, with smaller diameter branches, if they are in the way, I’ll not cut them, but retrain them with nursery tape and twine, guiding the branches to a new trajectory. This works in my area, SoCal (Burbank/LA), because often I need the crown and cover that removing a branch would sacrifice.
I love your garden; it looks like a northern clime where pruning is less costly to the tree.

I know this is a late comment that you might not see, but besides enjoying your tutorials so much, I am in love with your landscaping. I was wondering if the tall evergreens are Emerald Green arborvitae?

      Hi Cythia,
Thanks so much for your note. The tall arborviate are Emerald Green arborvitae. The ones in the center beds may actually get moved this season because they've gotten huge. I may replace them with smaller arborvitae. We will see how ambitious I am.

This was very helpful. We have 3 forest pansy's in our courtyard that need pruning. Do you have any idea if you can control the height of the forest pansy tree?

Thanks for watching. I would call an an Arborist to ask for suggestions. I do not have a recommendation on height.

Wonderful video! Thanks for posting! It is mid-June right now. I have 3 low branches that make it very difficult to mow on my 4 year old forest Panay redbud. What is the best time of year to prune these branches on such a young tree. Thank you 😊

Thanks for watching. Early spring or winter is the best time to prune.

Thank you for this video. What time of year was it when you did this? Do you have to wait until winter to do this?

Hi, I have small appalachian redbud tree this a single, straight trunk. But I very like wide form tree, just like in the video. Can I force tree at any chance to grow in this way?

Hi and thanks for watching the video. I am not 100% certain unfortunately. You might try doing a search and see if you can find an expert. I would use the search term "pruning redbuds site .edu" to get a link that is from a school. They tend to give the best advice.
