  • I've found out about this episode from the "i'm retarded?" meme. I just want to bring light to the episode and expose it as more than just that meme. Yea, I agree that some of the music choices really mess up some scenes to the point of making it memeable and not very effective.

Really an episode more about existential horror imo. Imagine living your day to day life, exactly like you are now. You hate all the little mistakes you make, but it's only normal. And one day, you find out you're just a broken version of everyone else, and you had no way of telling. Think of how horrifying that would be. And the worst part is, you don't even know if it's true for you right now or not.

Al's dialogue at the end (where he asks what sixteen-year-old dies of pneumonia) is compelling. Maybe it's just me, but I feel there's an implication that she died from neglect, or that the people there otherwise did something that led to her death (either accidentally or not) and tried to cover it up. Also, that "My Grandmother's Platter!" woman was a jerk. She knew the poor guy was a klutz, but made him work with the plates anyway, and THEN got angry with him when he dropped something. ~shakes head~

This scene still makes me tear up a little and I loved how when he started talking it was coming off like another story of one of his many conquests until he explained who she was to him and I think any of us can understand what it's like being in a family and watching a sibling get bullied.

The way Al spoke about his sister is the love a brother has for any of his siblings. Siblings fight and disagree on many things. Yet the bond many develop carry through into adulthood while others never realize how great a gift they could've had, but neglected. Al loved his sister immensely despite her mental and physical challenges. He wanted at least one member of his family back and that was his sister. He wanted to protect her like he used to. You can see and hear the hurt coming from Al (brilliantly played by Dean Stockwell) and there is not a doubt in his mind that he knew Trudy didn't die solely from pneumonia. Al knew that Jimmy wouldn't survive in an institution. That's why he was adamant that they don't fail.

If you want know why Al's sister dies from neumonia in the asylum read this:
Cold water torture in psychiatric institutions
Later in the 19th and 20th centuries, however, “things got worse because [cold water] was used in ‘insane asylums’ to ‘treat’ people with psychiatric disorders, basically by subduing them,” Dr. Jaekl told MNT.
“Attempts to use cold water to treat people with mental health issues were consistent until the turn of the 20th century not because they actually had therapeutic or curative value but simply because they were a means of control,” he went on to say.
In the 1800s, “surprise” cold showers or baths were used to allegedly treat “raging excitement” and too strong a libido. Such procedures involved dumping a bucket of cold water onto the naked “patient” or dunking them into an icy bath.

It tackled social issues like racism, sexism, and ableism during a period when people complained about "liberals" pushing their agenda in shows of this nature. Saying liberals would lose their shit doesn't make any sense, and misses the entire point of why this series was created in the first place.
