Debian and Ubuntu are two of the biggest and hottest Linux distros of all time. While Ubuntu and Debian are closely related, the kind of experience you get out of them is very different.
In one corner, we have Debian, the rock-solid, community-driven distro known for its stability and security. And in the other corner, we have Ubuntu, the user-friendly, innovation-driven distro that has taken the world by storm.
One chooses a stock desktop while the other rocks a heavily customized UI and the differences go on.
But with the release of Debian 12, Bookworm, Debian really ups its game and has become more relevant than ever before. Debian 12 is a huge update that brings a modern desktop, the latest features, and overhauls its entire package repository. And these things make Debian 12 an attractive choice.
But the question is, is it more attractive than Ubuntu 22.04 LTS?

Watching this on Ubuntu 20.04. I want to upgrade to 22.04. But since there is 2 years of support left, I will stick to this one. I really love the experience here. Especially Multi-tasking. It's so good. I will use Ubuntu forever.

Great video LinuxTex, and I have to agree with you. So, I have been a staunch Fedora user (with GNOME) for many years, and I've always loved it. With Fedora 38, though, I have noticed some odd glitches in the distro, and that prompted me to try out Debian 12. Normally, I would avoid Debian since everything in it is so old. But now that I am using Debian 12, I have to say it's a superb experience. All of the issues I had in Fedora 38 are not here in D12.
It is boring - it just works out of the box every single day. As far as software packages becoming out of date over time, I am using Flatpaks for many packages that I want to keep up to date, so that problem is solved. I reckon I may include the Testing branch for Debian in the future if there is some more up to date things, but right now, Debian 12 is working too good for me to want to mess with it.

When I use my pc I forget the os below, it just needs to keep on working. I just don't want to think about it. Debian is the way for me.

I might swap to Linux mint faye which is Debian 12 based. How does it compare to Ubuntu stability wise? I hear Debian just works when it comes to base system functionality (ex audio usually works on Debian as opposed to Ubuntu)
After 3 weeks experiment on SBC Orangepi 5b, Ubuntu is hand-down easier for a Linux newbie like me. I don't even read Ubuntu manual and I can immediately navigate its menu and launch app easily from Windows background. Debian is harder to configure for my SBC and after frustration, I could not stand it anymore and abandon it.
I've used Ubuntu only for over 7 years...I just changed my desktop PC to Debian12. I have been wanting new Gnome. All my games on steam still work. Only problem i have now is i cannot get OpenVPN3 client to install. I was told because it relies on older libs than Debian uses. Other than that i LOVE deb12. Been using it for about 2 weeks.
Absolutely wonderful video, after watch Chris Titus Tech ramble on about Ubuntu being in the "Devil" (his bad category) and putting Debian (Not 12 Bookworm, regular Deb on top) while dismissing Kali as a pointless distro....I found this much more factual. Thank you, liked and subbed!
CTT got it right, aside from Kali. Kali is great for a quick-to-deploy system of tools in pentesting engagements. Testers aren't going to spend the time getting everything set up with their own custom distro image to keep updated on their own and install onto fresh removable or write-only media. They want to focus on their engagements and getting the job done, not reinventing the wheel with their tool platform.
This video, however, lost my interest when it said snaps make Ubuntu feel more alive. That's just absurd. Snaps have introduced so many problems. Slow startups, poor performance, instability, broken features... Snaps have made Ubuntu feel slower and more broken.

Certainly you can build out Arch with your own custom toolset but seriously no one worth their salt is going to waste the time when Kali is already hosting most the tools any pentester needs. Also the upkeep of an Arch build is NOT for the faint of heart as things regularly break. Been there so many times and done that, this is coming from someone who still has 2 Arch builds on machines. Arch is great when it's stable but don't expect the stability to be on par with something akin to Ubuntu LTS.
But yes the Snaps banter made me almost throw up a little bit in my mouth. 🤢
Anyone curious can compare both distros in VMs without disturbing a current installation, and running all three (your main OS whatever that is, Debian and Ubuntu) at the same time enables precise workflow and other comparisons. Various sites like osboxes offer free prebuilt virtual machines if you don't want to bother installing normally, but I suggest comparing install routines as they're important to many users.

I'm a long time Ubuntu user, but I'm really tempted to make the move to Debian 12.
I've been dabbling with linux since...Caldera OpenLinux (!!) and am constantly amazed by the work being done in Open Source today. Debian & Ubutu in particular -- I installed Ubuntu (GNOME) to all my secondary PCs (6 of them!) years ago and have not looked back.
But...your excellent video has me thinking of moving my MAIN PC (Windows 11) to Debian. Microsoft seems to have lost its mind, loading up my desktop with ads (even though I am a paying Microsoft 365 E1 and Office 365 user) and constantly kicking out updates that cripple core functionality (example: File Explorer is SLOW - a known issue - for over a month now). My computer just doesn't feel like my own!
Have not heard "Caldera OpenLinux" in a very very long time. I remembered reading about it printed newspaper around 30++ years ago, and itt left a lasting impression.
I upgraded to Ubuntu 23.04 from 22.04 LTS on my chrome book and after three updates the sound starling acting up and defaulting to dummy output. Now after a year with 22.04 I never had an issue. I felt that 22.04 LTS was stable even on a chrome book. So after troubleshooting the sound I downgraded back to 22.04 and the sound works again. 23.04 Truly is unstable for the chrome book in. My experience. I always liked the LTS versions of Ubuntu 😊

The fingerprint login works not just while logging in, it works on cli while sudo'ing. Another reason why I love Debian.

thinking of going Debian , Ubuntu 24.04 just broke too much , Unity keeps crashing my GPU unless wayland is used and without my faithfull unity workspace switcher just no point in staying
Debian 12 made me rack my brains configuring the keyboard (which still isn't working, because the "Alt Gr" that activates "Level3 super" doesn't work) and installing the installation functions...
I don't think any layman would have the patience to do what I did to make Debian usable, because I had to test many things through the terminal and that's not at all intuitive, it's ridiculous.
In the settings there's the option to see the digital keyboard to know which keys are being activated, but you can't change the keys there, only through the terminal.
I tried Ubuntu and it wasnt for me. It isnt vanilla expirience, there was a bug in install process, and all this custom features dont Work smoothly..so as a newcomer i ended up on debian12.. not one single error or bug notification occured. New packages/features results with problems, even kernel brakage.. to each his own.. but expecting the newest features and stability is silly. Most People dosent know Better so they use the first distro they see online..

If you are a new Linux Mint is the way to go, but if you want to run Debian version of Mint you can now do so with LMDE 6, which is debian 12 bookworm, it is in beta 2 but is very stable so far and it is the Debian version. I switched over due to the parent company like RedHat and Canonical they are based on companies, you never know when they might stop providing releases, Redhat doesn't provide the code any longer so Centos is dead. Alma and Rocky Linux will provide support instead, but I am not a fan of RPM, I prefer debian and it is FOSS. Hopefully Mint will see the writing on the wall and UN-hitch from Ubuntu.
Not just because, Linux Mint has it´s own programs and graphical support for different tasks like the update manager which you can also change mirrors and see the repositories yo added. This makes Linux Mint easier to use than even Ubuntu (Also the cinnamon desktop windows-like helps, and the install and go experience)
Never use a distro backed by a company. Community distros for the win.

I have a fairly old Asus Laptop, and I tried to install Debian, but I had trouble connecting to the internet. Then I tried Fedora which wouldn't boot. So I finally settled on Ubuntu which worked out of box. Excellent distribution providing you head to the kitchen make a cup of coffee and wait for the snaps to load... Such is life in the Linux world. :D
So Ubuntu won by three points: one for having snap, even though he said snap causes many unnecessary problems for a lot of people and Debian has everything you will want without snap, one for easy of install, even though he never mentioned calamari, which makes installing Debian as easy as any software, and one bonus point at the end even after saying that Debian was actually better than Ubuntu in his summing up. Curious.

Runing Ubuntu in 2024, can't confirm the log startup times for snaps anymore. At least on SSDs
I'm completly deasagree. Ubuntu is more an more bug. Firefox in snap is a nightmare (like a lot of snap). A distribution is not a wallpaper. Ubuntu is average in LTS version. So if you use a lot applications or hardware it is not the right one. Ubuntu is based on Debian sid. If you prefer to have latest software, change to Debian sid. You will get the same reliability than Ubuntu. I red some comments : ubuntu is better for newbies ? Not, you start Ubuntu and no more browser : it disapeared ! How the newbie fix it ?
Please, will you mention or talk about Slackware, Nix, or Gentoo one day? Please.

For me, who also does gaming and rendering, Garuda was a perfect choice. It's based on Arch and it comes kernel optimized for gaming, plus Nvidia drivers installed. No hassle. Nobara is also a good choice.

Me too!!!! I'm running LMDE 5 with the LTS 6.1 Kernel (installs with the 5.10). So, I'm already getting some benefits of Debian 12 already. Just waiting for the Mint Love to show up.
so far im most impressed with Cinnamon - Debian 12. I figure why use Mint Debian edition when i can just get debian12 straight from debian, but with the cinnamon desktop which is what made mint famous.

I’m new to Linux even more with Debian. It’s been… a journey trying to download things through command especially through deb. It’s most likely my ignorance but I’ve been having such a hassle downloading some python3 packages and libraries. I bit off more than I can chew and OFTEN I have to take day breaks before I throw my Pi through a window.
Ubuntu is my favourite I love it. I have been using for the past four years.

I have not used Ubuntu 22 but I stick with Debian these days for the long term stability. If you want to try Debian , look for the "firmware" release and you'll have less to do after install. KDE by the way.
THis would look and work GREAT with the POP shell installed for the AUTO- TILING effect of pop os... but then that would defeat the purpose of gnome workspaces etc..
In my opinion, Debian is the best, but for daily use, i use Pop Os, ups, i mean Ubuntu 🤭. I use Ubuntu 23.04, btw.
Just switched from Ubuntu 22.04 to Debian 12 on my primary system and not thinking of going back. I can now see how much time I’ve been waisting waiting for Snaps to start up even on NVMe lol

My work PC is a Mac so prefer Gnome on my Linux but folks who prefer Win look may like KDE better, it’s a personal choice which only Linux provides :)
I use Debian 12, it is safer for me, despite not being as updated. Everything works for me and I don't need to keep up with the applications. For me the winner is Debian 12.

Ubuntu-based Linux doesn't work well on some computers, especially Chromebooks. You get intermittent sound issues when playing UA-cam videos.
Debian and Fedora systems however seem to have no such problem on our Chromebook.
Ubuntu also seems to have issues with updates, again on some computers only.
A friend of mine is stuck with Ubuntu 14.04 as updating to a higher version would bring her to an initramfs busybox prompt. And fixes wouldn’t stick resulting in the error happening again.
Was a big issue back in the day on 16.04 based Ubuntu distros we tried at the time especially.
How much of this type of trouble may have to do with systemd i’m not sure about, but i’m aware there may be a link and since higher Ubuntu versions past 14.04 switched to using systemd. Maybe this issue is fixed by now. Or she needs to use a Linux system that isn’t Ubuntu or doesn’t use systemd.
Could even be that an older kernel was all that was needed. But didn't have enough time with it to experiment when i last had a chance to play with it to see if i could solve her issues.

I would go with Debian since IBM took over Redhat (Fedora). They are messing with the GPL license $$$$
Debian has came a long goddamn way since Potato. I learn Redhat because I have to and use Debian for everything else, even custom containers - I don't mind the extra size. It's actually faster than Alpine in many instances. I do not trust Ubuntu as a production server, personally, although I do like how well they integrated netplan. Debian a set it and forget type of server. Old CentOS was too.
im on debian 12 with audio line input works but static ever so often with a less clear sound, this does not happen when im in windows, just curious if anyone has this issue.

And your comparison makes low sense; you are comparing a distribution tailored specifically for beginners (Ubuntu) to a distribution that is tailored for experts. Then you focus mainly on tiny details like the panel or the installer during your review. Debian being better performance-wise - and still both get the point? Whatever...
At some point you mention Xubuntu to use as light system. XFCE is great, I use it myself, but xubuntu is really not good. Kubuntu is much better, even performance-wise. Or just use debian and KDE or XFCE. Or Linux Mint. That is also great for older pcs. I also love and use OpenSUSE, although that would end up as hard to use in comparison...

I dont know why, but i haven't been able to have debian 12 boot after install on my laptop. Ive tried the net iso and the dvd iso both with and without secure boot enabled, and nothing has worked. Installing any ubuntu-based distro does boot after install though.
Same, when i reach login screen it start flickering, i tried opening tty it doesn't open, went back to fedora 38
@@erosdevs I eventually got it installed after redownlading the net ISO, but I don't know if I'm gonna stick with it purely because of how long it took for the stars to align or whatever that Debian finally booted after install.

I like Ubuntu but use Debian cause of Snap.
U talked about community in ubuntu . In Obs studio, display capture is not available in Wayland . When I choose xorg, obs lags and capture non stable screen . What to do pls help

I think it looks very good.. and would LIKE to use it-- but I've tried- and just can NOT. It gets in my way--and with only one eye now-- the sliding workspaces back and forth fast likethat- gives me motion sickness just looking at it.. I can SEE how it would be good and efficient- but can't make it work that way. Right now I use Debian based NEPTUNE- with BISMUTH on kde- for tiling-- and it wokrs GREAT for me.. I can't deal with all these "work spaces"-- whch to me is a waste- since it's nothing but TABS-- just BIGGER.. I wanted to use it- but it just won't let me.
I installed debian, but it doasen't support .deb files. I installed something first and it start works, but then isenkram doasn't work and I don't have wifi firmware. If you need use isenkram you need first add some long command. Too much problems at start so I say thank you and go back to Ubuntu :D

Still prefer xfce on Debian 12. Mostly because it is what I am used to.
Debian is very well tested. Ubuntu is very poorly tested, their own updates break the system and they release with bugs that should be Blockers. Ubuntu released with a completely broken software center, horribly bug ridden browser, mix and match Gnome versions and broken NVidia support out of the box! Ubuntu gets a constant stream of updates, Debian does not. Seems if you release when ready and have excellent QA standards there is no need to hammer user's with updates. I switched all my systems over to Debian 12.
The only thing I dislike about GNOME is that it consumes a high(er) amount of resources. If I were to switch to Debian 12, I'd go for the one that uses KDE Plasma.

GNOME is really a pain - the amount of extensions needed to accomplish what KDE Plasma has built-in, is insane.

I think debian should change its release schedule. It gets stuck in older versions, which is not for those desktop users who always want to use the latest and greatest apps. With the current release model debian is a server-centric distro, where stability and reliability matter most.

They have three different branches, don't they? I'm pretty sure you can use the testing or unstable branches if you don't want the stable one.
@@ordinaryhuman5645 That is possible but testing and esp. unstable branches are frequently incomplete and cause package breakages, incomplete packages etc, which is something no one wants. Debian has to handle them more carefully.
@@merakli2022 I haven't tried it yet, so I can't vouch for the stability personally, but Debian testing seems to have these requirements for packages:
4. All of its dependencies must either be satisfiable by packages already in testing, or be satisfiable by the group of packages which are going to be installed at the same time;
5. The operation of installing the package into testing must not break any packages currently in testing.
Just based on the wiki, it seems like they put a fair amount of care into the process. If someone really does want the latest and greatest, then at least a bit of stability is the cost. And the testing release is recommended for those desktop users wanting the latest.

It looks like they tend to freeze for ~7 months on average for a stable release, so if it was yearly, that'd only leave ~5 months to make changes. That'd be pretty freeze-heavy compared to how my department rolls at my day job (~4-5 months of development with 1-2 months of freeze for ~2 releases per year).

It is better Debian 12 than Ubuntu, more stability of Os.
Debian 12 is very poorly configured... I spent days having to configure installers and the keyboard, as many changes end up having to be made through the terminal and there is a lot of useful information missing for this.
Configure keyboard? It is really simple. Maybe You mean for Graphic card...

Switch for what?... For a server centric distro? Maybe on a laptop? 😄 Can't understand why people love distro made or born for server use like fedora (Red hat base, Debian or even Ubuntu). There's a lot of good choice for desktop and few ones for laptops... Not fedora, Ubuntu or Debian.
