They thought these teams praised native americans as warriors and felt that a team being named for them gave them representation across America for everyone to recognize. The term was originally used as a slur, like the n-word or referring to east Asians as “yellow.” It was later reclaimed but when used for commercial purposes it’s really insensitive. Not to mention, the images of the mascots themselves are caricatures and stereotypes of Native Americans.
Yeah, the league never had to intervene; the Islanders asked for permission to change their logo back. This guy is making it sound like the NHL had to tell NYI to change it back.
Edit: furthermore, the NHL actually forced the Islanders to keep the logo for a second year when the team wanted to revert back to their old logo after 1 year of the fisherman logo.
They shoulda kept the fisherman logo. It looked badass.

@@lifelinefromapexlegends3208 we can agree to disagree. I personally enjoy the asthetic and dont find it cringey in anyway, what would make it cringey? And no way are you paying $5 dollars for something that is not premade or piped through generator. Logo generators have existed for every new asthetic in the past but that doesn't take away from the style itself, you can yell when a design is just a generic copy paste without personality. Obviously you wouldn't want to go with a generator and instead get a custom design but the asthetic is perfectly valid, not sure what alternative routes would fit the genre as well as these logos do. They have energetic illustrations, clean typography, and clean shading and highlights which makes them very memorable and great for nice clean prints on regular canvases or merchandise. I'm sure its gona get old eventually but I havent seen a great replacement for this scene.
Coming from a Native American, I loved the team because it gave an identity to Natives in America, and keep people aware of those things. Now they take away the Indian, keep the team. It’s like Land’o’Lakes where they took away the Indian from the logo on “racist matters”. I have not met one person who thought that was racist. Nor Aunt Jemima or Uncle Ben. It shows a way of representation for all people groups. As all men should be equal.

The logo, Chief Wahoo, isn't based on anybody. The first cartoon Indian logo comes from Fred George Reinert, a cartoonist for the Cleveland Plain Dealer.
The name is allegedly based on Louis Sockalexis, who never played for the franchise but instead played for Cleveland's old NL franchise, the Spiders.
