Traveling with my kids all over the world we had one rule when getting separated. You always wait at the place you where together last. Mom definitely will pick you up. And they always had a card with the hotel’s address and my phone number in their pocket. We never had any major hiccups traveling this way.

Oyster cards can also be linked to your railcard for a discount. I know that might be more for British folk but it was still something that I didn't know until I had been in London for a while.
