- Arranged and played as only the talented and unique pianist Armand Muth can play it, this Irving Berlin tune from the Follies Of 1927 is a memorable piano roll recording.
This wild arrangement on a standard 88 note roll was typical of Muth's work on Play-Rite in the 1920's. His are some of the most original and unusual arrangements you will find on any 1920's roll.
Sit back and enjoy my Stroud Duo Art Pianola as it renders this classic 20's tune as it should be heard.
Thanks for viewing !!!
This is one of my favorite tunes, I think that I first heard it in a movie musical.
Originally written for the Follies Of 127, it was used many times including the 1948 musical "Easter Parade" then with Doris Day in 1955 ("Love Me Or Leave Me") . Thanks for the view, glad you liked it.
What a fine sounding Stroud Pianola! The piano is in perfect tune and has the "trademark" Aeolian Company full toned bass end. Great expressive pedaling too!
Well thank you. It has always been special to me. Would not trade it.
Thank you, for sharing this 'wild' Armand Muth Play-Rite roll!
Great tune; love this performance!
I love the tune also. Definitely unique style in the presentation, but that is Muth. Not easy to play, so thanks for your kind comment.
I don't know how you do it, but you need to be congratulated for your effort in managing to engineer out (as much as is possible) the "mechanical-play" with many of the pieces you've posted. Well done!
That is very kind sir. I really try to play the roll as I believe it was meant to be performed. Being a foot pumped player, that is a bit easier to do than with an electric pump driven instrument as the operator ("pianolist" if you will) has more freedom to express (change dynamics) of the roll being played. It helps to know the music as one played live, and it helps to know how the piano responds to various things like the size of holes, number of holes opening the tracker at any given time, and just know the piano in general. This old girl has been with me for well over 20 years now , and after literally pumping thousands (if not then thousand) rolls that have passed through my collection, I have come to very much 'in touch' with both. There are critics who think a piece must be played a little slower or faster but that is a personal choice and I do try to render it either for dancing (fast) or singing (slow) as I believe the roll was both arranged and intended. Sometimes it is a matter of putting 'pedal to the metal' on the vacuum, or just stop pumping for a second to get the piano to respond. It takes a bit of practice.. LOL...
"Who" is a favorite of many. Jerome Kern is a favorite of mine. You are most kind.
"Like" on the Ides of March 2016 :)
+Harry Andruschak Thanks, I am afraid I am not serving coffee this early in the AM, but glad you like it.
