Did classic grisaille painters add a little umber for mid tones. Then work on darks and lights. Then when you get that down start using cools for darks and warms for lights?
Hi. Just found this. Great video. I want to ask...is there any specific reason you don’t convert your reference to monochrome/ gray scale to do this? Do you find the tones stay more true when you work from the full color photo on your under painting? I’m wanting try this method and greyscale seems like the intuitive choice but when I think about it it seems like maybe the way work would serve as the better exercise for learning how to pick up on the tone variation in photos. Do you find this?
Hi , great quuestion....you ansewerd your own queston.....I used to convert my reference to grayscale and maybe if you start with this method it will be helpfull but there wil be more tones in de colorreference...converting to grayscele wil take away a lot of tonenuances and indeed a colorreference would serve as the better exercise for learning how to pick up on the tone variation in photos. thnx for the question and have fun trying this method.
Just saw this, this seems helpful to me so I can understand value. I started to do art about 3 years now, you know drawing, some watercolor painting, and so forth, but I’m still unsure about color and I struggle with putting paint on canvas because I struggle with colors. What do you suggest?
Hi ...thanx for the question....you first do the underpainting so you dont have to think in colors...a good trick to get used to tonevalues is converting colorpics to black and Grey than study the tones VS the colorpic..when i finish the underpainting...the whole paintng is done except Color then the colorglazing starts....theres no mixing on the palet....whd use purecolors but very thin and many layers...this video might help you out ua-cam.com/video/K2HjaIMRgnY/v-deo.html Good luck

Hello Helmut ....yes I use charcoal....Its no problem that the charcoal mix with the oilpaint it just dissapears ...wich is good ...you don't want the drawing coming thru the painting wich will happen if you seal the drawing ...so it's better to paint it away..

Hi Mellisuga, If you paint wet in wet ....straight with color...there's no need for an underpainting...but if you glaze in layers like the Old Masters...you glaze over an underpainting , check my videos on glazing...Thanx
