      Christine Joyce .. I also agree!
      Let others who post instructional videos take a lesson.
      Here we have well articulated explanations that match the action.
      Although there is background music (which I discourage) it’s very soft and almost unnoticeable.

    When it comes to working wet on wet (Alla Prima) I use the Bob Ross Oil Paints and Base Mediums (Liquid White). I consider the Bob Ross Paints Artist Grade and they are specifically formulated for Alla Prima. Also, his Liquid White is a good medium for moisturizing the canvas for Alla Prima and they have a high pigment load and it helps a lot to achieve many "painterly effects". I'd love to hear your opinion on them.

    • @walcottfineart5088
      @walcottfineart5088  3 роки тому +3

      I think the Bob Ross paints are OK. They are probably in the mid range but if they work for you then that's what matters most. No need to change. I used to be a Bob Ross artist years ago myself when I started. Those paints are specially formulated to work with Bob's technique so I typically don't include them in videos about traditional oil painting. Thanks for watching! :)

    Great video Jason. I vacillate between which I prefer for my own work. I find the monotone with colored glazes is easier to get the shapes and values right, but a well executed ala prima painting feels more lively and dynamic.

    Great explanation of both methods! Thank you ! I have a question please, so for Grisaille technique only transparent colors are used or opaque can also work? Does the opaque color give that layered look to the painting or just block the color underneath?

    • @walcottfineart5088
      @walcottfineart5088  4 роки тому +3

      Thanks for watching! :) The method works much better with transparent colors, but you can do it with opaque colors if they are thinned with enough medium. It gives the painting a somewhat smoky look. But that "stained glass" richness will primarily come from the transparent colors. My demo was very primitive since it was quick for the video. If you want to see the grisaille technique done in the hands of a master, look at the paintings of Van Eyck or daVinci's, "The Annunciation".

    • @walcottfineart5088

    Thank you for this very informative video. I have three questions regarding glazing. 1. how long does it take for each glaze layer to dry before you can add another layer, and 2. can you glaze with opaque paint or only transparent/semi-transparent paint? 3. does the glazing medium you use make opaque paint transparent?

    • @walcottfineart5088
      @walcottfineart5088  4 роки тому +1

      Thanks for watching! Yes, you can glaze with opaque colors. Since they aren't completely transparent it will add a smoky effect to the paint layer. Even very diluted applications will still have some slight opacity. As long as you follow the rule of fat over lean, you can add the next glaze layer once the previous one is dry enough to not be disturbed. The dry time also depends on what kind of glazing medium you use. For the fastest time, use an alkyd medium like Galkyd or Liquin which will dry in about 18 hours. Mediums made with Stand Oil are typically the slowest and can take up to several weeks to dry.

      As long as the layer you are painting over is not disturbed by the solvents in your glazing medium you should be OK. Although waiting longer would be better. @@walcottfineart5088 I am wondering if one could use a stand oil and gamsol glaze between layers of paint? Like let one layer dry, do a 'varnish' with the oil/gam, let that dry, do another layer... I wonder if that's been done, and if so what would happen?

    • @walcottfineart5088

      @@theagespot9717 I'm not sure the purpose of doing that, assuming that you mean a layer of plain medium with no color. As long as the rules of fat over lean were followed it wouldn't hurt the painting. Thanks for watching!

      @@theagespot9717 You are essentially oiling out the painting doing that. if just one paint layer is too opaque your layer of medium before it would be wasted. Better choice to save materials and time by using a glaze slowly and surely.
      I wonder if a glaze doesn't take well do I clean my area with gamsol or a half potato like some teachers say?

    Who metarials is better for oil painting?... Canvas or Panel?

    • @bio-plasmictoad5311
      @bio-plasmictoad5311 4 роки тому +1

      Depends on if you want to be able to see the weeve of the canvas on your painting, with a masonite panels it's a smooth service so it's better for very small details. With a canvas with a frame you can hang them easy without a decorative frame by using just a nail. Some people like the springyness of a framed canvas while painting. It's all down to what you like better, I would say there is no difference really for where you could say what's better for painting. It all comes down to what you want from the surface you are using, or if you want to hang it without a frame on it. Others could tell you there reasons for why they use one over the other, I use both and have found it makes no difference to your painting in general other than a non canvas service you can get more of the fine details, but you can do that with canvas using gesso and sanding the layers with each coat.

      1)And will paint straight from a tube dry faster or if its mixed with linseed oil (and then appliedon canvas) ?
      2)And can i use turpentine instead of odorless mineral spirit ? (For thinning paint and cleaning brushes).
      Will it affect the painting process somehow ?

    What medium to use? In alla prima?

    • @walcottfineart5088
      @walcottfineart5088  4 роки тому

      Thanks for watching! For alla prima you can use whatever works best for you or none at all if you prefer. I happen to like the traditional jelly mediums like Maroger or Rublev's Italian Varnish, but you can also use Liquin or Galkyd for faster drying. Keep in mind that a medium is not necessary and you should only use as little as you need. I have a video on Mediums here: ua-cam.com/video/fF1ULm94wro/v-deo.html
