- Sugawara no Michizane was a poet, scholar, and one of the most powerful men in late 9th century Japan. But for centuries he has been worshiped as "Tenjin", a god first associated with thunder, and later with learning. This video tells the story of how that happened.

Imagine achieving godhood just so you can mess with the people that ruined your career
What a lad!
I’m not at all into Japanese history but I enjoyed learning about a great man whom I otherwise would never have known without this great video.
I first heard about Tenjin from the anime Noragami, where he is a supporting character...it never occurred to me that I'd come across one of the most interesting figures in Japanese history.
Sugawara no Michizane is far from the only man, who later became a demon/god. Especially the Heian-Era knew several of them:
Prince Sawara (died November 8, 785), who was accused of murder and starved himself to death after he was exiled.
Taira no Masakado (died March 25, 940), who let a rebellion and claimed the position of emperor for himself.
And of course the most powerfull of all: Emperor Sutoku (died September 14, 1164), who after an insult cursed the imperial house (Japan was ruled by samurai for the next 700 years)
So enjoyable. Never change your style! As far as history channels on YT go, this is truly one of the finest
How does this video only have 5000 views? Such great content!
beautiful video, great story- love these stories an average european would likely never have heard of. would love for you to include sources in some form, though
Really glad you liked it! Unusually I happened to have saved my sources for this video in a folder, so I've added them in the video description now.
How interesting, thank you for the video.
Fantastic video!
Amazing video!
Awesome work dude, some of the best history videos I've seen on this website. You deserve way more views!
Thanks a lot!
They say every time Kings and Things uploads a video some plum tree in Kyoto takes off flying to his house
THIS VIDEO HAS UNDER 10k VIEWS? What? This feels like it should have three point five million.
You can always trust K&T to make well made and interesting videos about obscure people through out history
What is the point of bots like this?
@@GoogleUserOne what?
This.
I almost asked why there was so many little comments, then I realized I was pretty early.
What is required to build a shrine? I might have some exams myself.
Now that you have done a vid on china and Japan could you perhaps make one on Korea.
