The opening is representing when Axl Rose first came to Hollywood as a teen - he was Bill Bailey from Indiana and a "hick" (represented by the wheat in his mouth) and then had to survive the jungle.
If I remember correctly from an interview I saw with Axl he said when he first got off the bus in Hollywood a bum saw him and said Welcome to the jungle baby, you gonna die and thats where it all came from.
And then at the end, it shows him with his hair all teased while he's looking at the tv in the store window, looking totally different. You can clearly see how the jungle changed him from the beginning of the song to the end.
Dude. This is a top ten rock album of all time. Listen to every single on this album. And yes the jungle is exactly what you are describing it as. Great catch 👍🏼
As a kid who grew up, loving the 50s through the 80s music… after five years in the Navy and getting into here these guys were the first time I knew rock had a chance of being revived🎉😂❤
i was 5 but my coussin was 16....in Serbia... needless to say she had all the influence and by 9 i was the only kid at school who listed "you could be mine" on full blast xD
Rock bands with three guitars are most successful in the 80s. Axl’s vocals next to Slash’s lead guitar are magic, backed by Duff on bass and Izzy on rhythm. It’s a true rock 80s sound. Then there is Steven on drums. Although his time with GNR was cut short by an acute heroin addiction, I’ve always loved him. He gives life to the heartbeat of the music. The song is about arriving in LA, in the 80s, in a decadent sex, drugs and Rock n’ Roll era. They should know all about it because they lived it.
Their first song... Old man told axl when he got to LA from Indiana... He said welcome to the jungle. You're going to die... So he wrote a song about the encounter... Check out the story. It's on the tube
Welcome to the Jungle Shon, your right it's the energy 👌 "Guns N' Roses" 💪 makes you Rock'n'Roll 😅 Peace✌️ Gary 😊 the 70 year old Hippie 😊 The 80's, what can I say Whow!
And that’s only regarding guitar playing ability. He’s obviously very successful, writes catchy melodies, is insanely recognizable, etc. Just as far as technical skill goes there are so many better guitarists.
@@LemmyGibbler To be fair she said "one of" which could mean top 1000 for all we know. He sure as hell is closer to one of the world's best than he is to one of the world's worst.
Farm boy gets off the bus in the big city. Dark city has everything. He ends up in a straight jacket being forced to see all the city's underbelly has to offer.
It's definitely about the singer coming from small town Indiana, arriving in Southern CA. Los Angeles / Hollywood to be exact and the shock effect it had on him. A lot of what you see on the TV inthe video was on the news in Southern CA.
Rare album where every song is a banger! This production was a game changer because it kept us captive. It was the beginning of the end of glam metal! Then the Seattle sound and great 90s alternative bands were great!! GnR kept rolling thru those murky waters
First music video I ever saw. Flipping random channels at a neighbors’ house, while my folks ate dinner. Caught me flat-footed, blew me away. Been a music fan ever since.
Your very first interpretation was the correct interpretation. I don't know what he had in his mouth at the beginning, but Cowboys usually have a straw of hay that they chew on or suck on usually to control their smoking habit. Some people do it just because they like the taste of hay.
axle says when he hitch hiked to LA, they ran up on an old black guy under an underpass, abd the old guy says "welcome to the jungle baby, your gonna die" lol
Read the lyrics. He's talking about all the evil he saw and heard when he went to chase a basic dream and what you have to do to get to it.. He's actually pissed off, singing it through a song
Check out “Live Tokyo”, “Rocket Queen” “November Rain” “Don't Cry” “ Bad Obsession” and more. GNR were so good live during that time and the concert was awesome.
"Appetite for Destruction" the album this song comes off is the best selling debut effort by any artist or group and is 30+ million strong in sells. And that didn't happen by chance, this entire record is amazing, as is the cover art which is a painting by Robert Williams titled of course, Appetite for Destruction. The fact that none of these guys died at the start or in their formative years is an accomplishment all it's own.
I live about 45 min from where Axl Rose grew up. When i was in high school, my drama teacher told us that her friend's son had started a band and "they were going to be big. BIG, big." She said.... ❤
I watch a lot of reaction channels. I always watch yours first. Even if other videos have songs i enjoy more, your commentary and breakdown is top notch.
You noted this song talks about over indulgence. So does Hotel California by the Eagles. It talks about the excesses in and around Los Angeles and Hollywood.
This song is about him going to Hollywood,… The Sunset strip in the 80s.!!! Every musician and group alive played the strip. Going to the strip every weekend and Cal jam…. i’ve seen at least 100 groups perform live. (it’s true what they say… it’s all a bit of a blur)
I remember staying up late to see this on Headbangers Ball. It wasn't in daytime rotation on MTV. Too ribald, hah! Ty for reaction sir. This was the first single.
I remember seeing this video for the first time on MTV and immediately loved it. Normally the songs that instantly grab me don’t stand the test of time. This one does, and the entire album is excellent. I prefer the heavier side of rock/metal but this album captured the time period perfectly and I still love it. Great reaction!!
Mr Brownstone (about heroin) - great song And Rocket Queen. I'm not a HUGE GnR fan, but this may be one of the BEST debut albums by a band. I think the straight jacket and TV is a reference to a 70's movie - Clockwork Orange. They force him to watch to desensitize him to the horrors. ;0)
My take is he referring to the “concrete jungle” as in big urban cities where there is always crime and immoral activities taking place and it can suck you in and bring you down
Growing up in a rural area, I would pull tall grass and chew at the end of it because it was a sweet tasty chew. Not sure why he would be chewing on a dried up one.
The song shows the story. He's probably from a small town, gets off the bus in a big city and doesn't take 2 steps until someone's trying to hustle him. The city has an answer for every vice you can have. They're just saying if you've got the $$$, we've got whatever your desire is!
The part with the straitjacket seems like a play off a scene in the film A Clockwork Orange where they try to use aversion therapy to break the protagonist's love for sex and violence. So, they're doing the same to Axl to try and cure him of his habits.

GNR was full of drug references. Check out Mr. Brownstone... This was the soundtrack of my Senior year. ( I guess it was my inner rebellious teen) LOL. I am enjoying your reactions. And I have to say the music has me up and dancing!
Being Riordan to watch voile clips is referencing the movie A Clockwork Orange where a criminal was forced to watch violence while they made him sick as a treatment.
Axel gets off the bus chewing on straw, oral fixation, the first guy he meets is trying to sell him some, then the Lady of the night walking by, then he's strapped to a chair seeing more of the world than he ever could have back home. The song isn't only about vices, but how at first you're the partaker and you end up being the merchandise.
The line at the end of the second chorus; "I wanna hear you scream", is actually ," I wanna hear yous cream", hence the moaning afterwards. That whole verse is a reference to what some women have to do to survive and succeed in the jungle.
The opening is representing when Axl Rose first came to Hollywood as a teen - he was Bill Bailey from Indiana and a "hick" (represented by the wheat in his mouth) and then had to survive the jungle.
The “ hayseed”

@@oldmetalheadsteve3622i remember hearing this and i really hope it’s true. makes this whole song better just if that story is true 😂
Smartest damn reactor out there. Never seen someone pick up on the idea of a song correctly so often after less than one full listen.
no lie

There is not a bad song on that album. It is full of bangers. My Michelle, Rocket Queen and Nightrain are other standouts!
Listen to the whole Appetite For Destruction!
Sweet Child of Mine ❤
@ConspiracySmurf Love Mr. Brownstone too!

Let's just simplify it: anything from Appetite!
I'm thinking My Michelle 💯🔥
Rocket Queen
agree
Slash is one of the world's best guitarists!!!💜💜💜🎶🎼🎵🎸🎸🎸🎸
He really isn’t though. Name something slash did that 100 or more didn’t do before him?

Hell yes, my 2nd fav gnr song...WHO DEY Baby lol...our theme song for the Cincy Bengals.
Still gives me chills! So raw!
straight-jacket metal = Quiet Riot Metal Health (Bang Your Head) 🤘

My favorite GnR song. Phenomenal guitar work.
I live in Cincy, when the Bengals come out to this song you can't help but get super pumped up.
First time I ever heard this song and GnR was in the movie The Dead Pool w/ Clint Eastwood.
Straight banger
**KNOCKIN ON HEAVENS DOOR** and ***DON'T CRY*** super huge power ballads
Check out GNR's other songs "PATIENCE", "I USED TO LOVE HER", "CIVIL WAR", "YOU COULD BE MINE".
Excellent interpretation of the lyrics!
Badass tune. I knew when I first heard this song I knew they were gonna be famous
Always loving some G~N~R ❤❤❤
Let's do it!
Love the straight jacket…idea taken from a scene from the movie a Clockwork Orange 😂
This was my introduction to hard rock/ metal music. I was 9 years when this came out I've been addicted ever since.
Slash is one of the best guitarist. He is up there with the best.

the whole album Appetite for Destruction is loaded with bangers!!!
I only listen to about 5 albums straight through, and this is one of them.
This is my fave from G&R - THE perfect rock song. And yes, the main draw for me is the incredible energy of it.
I was 16 yrs old when this came out...great time to be alive for music!
This is the Cincinnati Bengals walkout music. The nickname for Paycor Stadium is The Jungle. That will really fire you up before a football game.
🐅🧡🤚
Easily one of the best albums of all time, no doubt about it.
Crazy Train, Smells like Teen Spirit, Welcome to the Jungle, these songs already in your head stop fighting Rock N Roll
All I can see when I hear this song is the movie Lean on Me. Lol
He’s getting electroshock everytime he sees something toxic . The straw in his mouth symbolizes his being a hick/ hayseed from the farm.
A Reference to Clockwork Orange, surely.

It’s a strand of wheat he’s chewing on. It’s good! 😉
It's a stereotype image of a "hayseed" rural kid. Quick visual ID to show who this is (naïve, out-of-place, potential victim).
Small town American kids going to LA to make it big and what happens when they get there.
