  • My Horror Rear Coil Springs...Mercedes Vito 109 cdi
    Mercedes vito 109cdi 2005 with 196k miles
    Finally got around to replacing the seriously badly broken rear coil springs on the 2005 mercedes vito van before they fell out by themselves.

    All done without a video call on your phone from Monika while you were in the middle of it lol
    They say that the worst car in the garage belongs to the mechanic, as after fixing others cars all day he cannot be arsed to fix his own !
    I would have put some grease between the bump stops and the chassis, my tame mechanic swears by oil spraying springs with old engine oil, he has not had one break that has been sprayed. His theory is that the oil penetrates defects and stops rust working into them so causing it to grow and break.

    As a fellow Australian we shouldn't forget the injustice that is being done to Julian Assange.
    And l want a vito and love your videos.

    Those springs look like they were designed to break! If they were wider at the top/bottom they would support better and less likely break.

      Alastair Munro you wanna see mk6 fiesta front springs - they snap for fun and because of the shape of them they completely drop off the mount -suspension collapses and if your lucky the jagged coil end don’t puncture the tire 🤮really shit design

    Hi alan, one question , On autodoc they sells coil springs for the w639 vito mixto with different lengths (For example kyb were 325mm and sachs were 370mm). What it should be the correct length?

    Do you think the vito is a great van overall? Reliable or not? I see a lot of them driving around here in denmark with some rust on them, but overall they must be great vans .

  • @gs425
    @gs425 5 років тому +1

    Alan why is it modern springs break so often...I've seen it on most makes...Audi, Ford, Citreon, Merc. Never used to happen in days gone by !.

    • @WhiteDieselShed
      @WhiteDieselShed 5 років тому +1

      Cost cutting, fitting the smallest lightest springs possible. But cars have got heavier and speed bumps etc.
      The average family car is now around 1500kg where a Granada or Cortina would be 900kg - 1000kg.

    • @gs425
      @gs425 5 років тому +2

      @@WhiteDieselShed modern cars are definitely heavier, but that means stronger springs...else they'd sit lower. However I agree about cost cutting. They are probably all made of the same grade of Chinesium...rather than Sheffield's finest as of the old days.

    • @WhiteDieselShed
      @WhiteDieselShed 5 років тому

      They could make a strong spring out of 6mm material and it wont sag or sit lower. It would probably have a seriously short lifespan though unless they have alien technology.

    This is exactly the reason why you don't buy a car from a Mechanic. People don't release that the last thing a Mechanic wants to do is work on their vehicle.

    Like most mechanics vehicles we either never have time to fix our own , or we know it's not that bad and it will only take an hour to sort it , 2 years later , had bits on the side for the job then can't find them or used on another job lol

    My transit had two broken leaf springs when I ripped them out for mot test
    Only noticed as the van was starting to lean over more than normal
    And one had gone flat, couldn't believe my eyes when I had both springs broken in three places
    Been broken quite a while but all hidden in the hangers or behind u bolts
    I been towing stuff for miles till they came
    Uprated to twin leaf so well jacked up now
    Our Vito is parked up in compound due to injector seals leaking and its stinks of fumes
    Tryed to farm it out as its a pig of a job but no one's interested
    Its had a lot of money chucked at it
    Still a rust bucket with a faulty ecu and faults

    Life imprisonment for that fault, but you could fail to stop ram police cars and just get a slap on the wrist instead.
    Shows your a real mechanic when your vehicle is a wreck. Just wait until the day you need to take your vehicle to
    a garage and pay to have them fix it.. That hurts.
