After being diagnosed with HIV, Arik Hartmann chose to live transparently, being open about his status, in an effort to educate people. Going through the comments it's very saddening that people couldn't understand the message the speaker was trying to spread. The danger is neither undermined nor forgotten and also not the TOPIC. The point is treating people right even if they have the disease. To be rightly cautious with proper knowledge of the disease and of the current state. It's to loose the prejudice we carry from the past.

I resonate with this. I was lucky to have known my HIV diagnosis at the acute phase while I was seroconverting. It’s been all most a month, and I am hoping to see an increase in my CD4 counts and decrease in viral load.

What strikes me with your talk is how articulate you are. Your ability to clearly convey your thoughts is impressive. I doubt its enough to soften the stigma of HIV but it certainly attracts sympathy for your condition whether or not you want it.

I genuinely loved this video. This is a topic that NEEDS to be talked about much more.
I myself am not living with this virus, but so many people are (roughly 1.2 million Americans according to research), and they deserve to live a normal life, free from the fear of being treated differently simply because they are living with HIV, a VERY manageable condition now.
Firstly, HIV is not the same as AIDS, the two are very different. I find it very tragic that many people still have the same mindset as many people projected onto individuals living with HIV in the 80’s & 90’s during the height of this epidemic. HIV treatment can LITERALLY save lives, especially when diagnosed early enough. When there is access to effective antiretroviral treatment and competent medical care, someone living with HIV will most likely have the normal life expectancy as someone who is not living with the virus…but YET achieving all of these factors leading to managing HIV, something that should be fairly simple to do, is not easy at all actually. Unfortunately, the stigma surrounding this virus continues to make it even harder. There is no reason for the toxic shame that surrounds HIV nationwide. This is not a “gay disease”, HIV does not discriminate and it is very possible for a individual who is heterosexual to contract the virus from another heterosexual man and/or female.
Attitudes towards HIV/AIDS need to change. If someone is diagnosed with HIV that does not make them “dirty” or “ promiscuous”, sometimes, for lack of a better word, stuff just happens. I’m sure people who read this comment will be thinking, “why is this girl, who does not even have the virus, writing all of this?” , and if you are thinking that…the answer is that I am writing this comment to hopefully help educate other people on this topic and to help end the stigma.
It’s important to realize that in today’s world, HIV can be treated, but stigma kills.

Because nobody wants HIV. It's a big deal. The stigma will never totally go away as it shouldn't because it shouldn't be taken lightly.
I think the immaturity around it should stop however.
It isn't any different than hepatitis, really...but hepatitis doesn't get people kicked out of their homes.

today we have a cure for hep C and the next 3-5 year will cure for hep B , and we have vacine for hep B , so i think hepatitis is not a big deal .
The stigma hasn't changed because the fact that it's a communicable disease that has no cure hasn't changed.
Actually most people who follow their antiretroviral treatment can reach an undetectable viral charge, which provide them a life quality as good as yours in addition to reduce the risk of transmitting the disease to 0%, even without using a condom.

I don't know why, but hearing hiv aids just makes shiver. But honestly, I could not for the life of me tell you why. And I'm willing to bet I'm not alone, and this is the aids tragedy...

i really liked this talk: because of this guy i found out a lot of new things i had no idea before. i wish everyone knew much more about diseases they are afraid of because they just were not taught about them
To be honest I am more concerned with people (especially careless young people or the newborns) who live their lives, thank God and doctors, in a time where HIV is not a death sentence anymore and thus considering it no longer a problem. Nowadays HIV or Aids are no longer on tv or news, people grow up un-educated about this risk and silently the virus continues its spreading.
To give you some statistics, Italy is sadly among the most infected countries in the EU with estimated 200'000 people dealing with HIV or even Aids, that is the final stage of the infection.
Only 4 out of ten really know their status, meaning that half of the population being Hiv+ ignores to be in danger and to represent a danger for their partners (since they do not treat themselves, they are a danger. If they are under treatment well then it's a different story).
And finally, people newly diagnosed with HIV struggle to tell their friends and family, delaying the treatment probably until it is becoming too late.
So this is, to me, very shocking. Hiv+ people are regarded sometimes as monsters and that's a shame. But it is more ashtonishing that this disease, which we could in theory prevent, is still a silent threat wandering through decades...
My goal would be to stop or at least reduce to almost 0 the new cases of Aids and possibly having the entire population knowing their status. It just take a few minutes to discover if you have the virus or not but it takes a lifetime to fight it, so educating people is our best weapon to win once and for all this battle.
By reducing the cases of Aids and consequent deaths, by making people aware of their HIV status, you can take back control of the disease. Once you achieve that, you can start by educating people not to be afraid of HIV+ guys and that as long as you remember that they are human too, we can let the science do the final step for a so-wished cure (or better treatments at least).
Well the message that has been conveyed through this video is that we need to change perception against the person who is suffering from Hiv. But after seeing the comments below, i believe that they didn't get message they'll only understand once they are diagnosed with same and then ignored by society

The ignorance, especially coming from 21st century generation is the real sickness that exists. I am thankful for my upbringing,which made me informed and compassionate for people who are suffering with HIV . To quote the speaker "it's not a death sentence". There's support for this community 👍✌

Only it is a death sentence. Death to the ability to live a normal life without taking massive amounts of drugs to stay alive.

You are handling your disease well but what appears as irrational fear is a normal response for want of life, fear of disease is rational and trying to change that opinion in somebody else is the irrational act IMO

Tristen MT there's no risk of transmitting Alzheimer's. HIV is becoming more like herpes, it won't kill you, but it still isn't something you want. The fear of death isn't rational anymore, and I guess that's progress, but people are always going to have negative perceptions of a transmutable disease.
Tyko Brian. Would you say the opposite of ease is good? Disease kills, harms and disables. This is advanced knowledge we commonly take for granted. If you destigmatize disease you would literally be acting from a view point that is medieval, ignorant. Fear of disease is why our babies live at a higher rate

I know someone who has HIV - I wouldn’t have even known - I mentioned that I had a severe food allergy and he said he could relate because of his illness. I didn’t realize how far science has come with HIV

you completely missed the point. treating people as if they are a risk to our society, marginalizing them, even with the improvements in the hiv treatment , is what this talk is about.
Some people talk about the disease being something that could kill them and cause them to be drug dependent and so the stigma will never be erased .. however the stigma mainly exists because it’s primarily a sexually transmitted disease. Other diseases that are caused from non sexual acts WILL NEVER be treated as HIV and unless we realize that it’s way more than a STD and a disease just like others than can happen then the stigma will never be erased.
On the other hand, mostly all other deadly diseases are not as easily spread as cancer and don’t limit people and their interactions. So the stigma can be understood.

I thank God for having Friends who advised me to go on the antiviral drug and i am and living a healthy life with undectable virus whereas my husband was not so blessed to be advised to go on treatment i think the Drs have to be taught to ask patients to go on treatment it is sad not all Drs are educated enough RE HIV

You missed the point . He wasn’t saying that people with HIV should go around and live a care free life ! He just wants the stigma to stop ... like his friends not eating his food or for him to remove his toothbrush from the bathroom . He isn’t dismissing the seriousness of the disease either . He just is fighting the stigma that people genuinely believe you can’t even go near a person with HIV, and he’s saying to research and educate yourself .. whether you have it or not so if you don’t have it you know what to do to not get it .
And he very well said he is not undermining the disease. He is reminding that the advancement that happened in this field is great but its status is exceeded by the fear of the disease and the social stigma that existed at 80's n 90's... which still continue to prevail despite the advancement.
The need which the speaker is constantly reffering to is not only the loosing of the decades old stigma for the coming generation but for the existing too. The loosing of mind set which judges the disease on the basis of past tragedies. Even though out come of the disease is almost same but the researches have been done and necessary precautions are discovered adding to that many myths regarding the disease have been proved wrong.To treat humanely is what people need, the request here is not stressed to accept a +ve person as a sexual partner (which is the choice of an individual) but to be more accepting and leaving behind the stigma. Being an understanding friend doesn't makes you vulnerable to disease it just makes you an understanding person. Be alert but be understanding as well
I'm sorry, but if you have a disease that cannot be fully cured, I'm out. I won't stigmatise you, I won't make fun of you, I will be your friend and everything but you cannot expect me to feel as comfortable as with someone who doesn't have it. Despite the fact that the chance of transmission might be really really low, someone is bound to transmit it, that's math. And once transmitted it's with you for life.

You actually missed the message, it's more along the lines of stop disciminating against HIV + persons.
because treatment isn't the same as a cure and its still highly infectious.

That is just incorrect, it can be virtually non-contagious, not non-contagious. There is a huge difference. There is currently no way to determine if a specific person is contagious after they've had treatment for HIV. So even fully treated there is still a chance to contract it. It is essential to be transparent about whether you have a possible contagious disease even if there is a relatively small chance to spread a disease. I personally would take the same exact precautions that his roommates took and I do not fault them at all.

There's "stigma" because the vast majority of people who contract the virus, do so because of their own reckless and irresponsible behavior. Unless one was born with it (because their mother was reckless and irresponsible), r...ped, suffered a needle stick injury from an infected patient, or got it from a cheating spouse, I honestly hold nothing but great disappointment and contempt for people who catch it. Because it's easily avoidable if people would just behave properly and not like animals.

The stigma hasn't changed because having an incurable disease for the rest of your life isn't something you want, regardless of how advanced the treatment of it is or will become, I bet everyone still prefers not having HIV at all. I thought this was common sense?
It’s almost like you didn’t listen to what he said at all? You can’t spread HIV through casual means, so what do people have to worry about unless they’re sleeping with someone who is +? Nothing.
The stigma arises from a fear that you’ll contract it, no matter how impossible that may be. People treat you differently because they’re scared to get it themselves, and while the initial fear is understandable and very human because what we don’t understand is very scary, there’s no reason to treat HIV+ people any differently. To do so is only damaging to the + person. And to be unwilling to listen to reason is only damaging to you.

Do you know what everything He's saying is so true.. since contracting HIV I've lost my whole family my friends my life. I've had to move home's . I hate the fact I have this I understand medically I'm fine , but I'm emotionally broke and feel that no-one will ever want a relationship with me sometime I I think about just ending it all .. I'm a good person and all I want is to be able to have a loving relationship and being excepted.. why is it so hard for people to understand. My life has been shattered due to my HIV.

Take courage. Not everyone thinks this way. I met and married my husband who had already been HIV positive for 20 years. I am not afraid of him or of contracting HIV. He is very good about taking his medicine, and he's been undetectable for years. U=U, Undectable=Untransmitable.
We come together physically, as God intended, and there is no fear on either part.
I think part of what makes people unreasonably scared about it is ignorance, and the other part is not thinking of how you would like to be treated if the shoe was on the other foot.
Jesus knew what He was taking about when He taught that we should "treat others the way we'd like to be treated".

HIV is mostly caused by personal behavioral choices.
And secondly
The extremely high costs of treating aids and HIV effects the cost to all people who are paying for healthcare, since they are included in the same pool as everyone else.

I'm really glad I watched this, I had no idea how bad the stigma around HIV really is, it must be so horrible to have your friends decide they no longer want to share anything of yours, as if it is some sort of mysterious curse and nobody knows how it could be transmitted. It takes such bravery to come forward and talk about something like this but it the only way things will change.

that may be annoying once in a while sure...but "horrible"? how exactly would that be horrible?
Perhaps I should have said 'touch anything of yours'. I think it would just feel like a barrier has been put up between you and your friends. It's one thing if you have an illness that you could transmit through sharing your things but that's not the case with HIV.

HIV and smoking are unrelated phenomena. For one, I don’t know anyone who’s forced to smoke, but half the people I know who have HIV were raped and had no choice.

well, that and HIV virus can mutates into a lot of subtypes which can be more resistant to drugs and such which i heard from other TED talks. This is the reason why it should be avoided.

Congratulation that HIV is treatable to such a degree, that you do not die a slow and painful death, but can live a almost normal life. However it is still infectious and the treatment you have to undergo costs a fortune, no one in their right mind would downplay these facts.
Sorry but living together with a HIV positive person is just a insane risk to take, since it is transmittable by blood. I personally tend to cut myself with a knife or paper and only notice after i find a little drop of blood on my desk or clothes much later since i did not feel the small cut at all. What if that happens to the "unclean" person. So even if that person is very responsible accidents can happen.
Obviously HIV people should not be exiled from society, but that infection is still a big deal.
The only way you would get infected in the scenario you described is if you had cut yourself and the infected person also cut themselves and then you half your cuts together so their blood went directly into your cut. The virus dies when exposed to air so you cannot get infected from a dried drop on the table or something like that.

When off knowledge people get scare ..virus doest live for seconds outside of the body instantly it will die..even if you touch hiv patients blood with hand it will not transmitt it will die in seconds...

The stigma has changed, it used to be the dreaded lurgie and now it’s pretty much accepted. I’ve known a couple if HIV people and they’re treated the same way as the rest of us.

BlurryFace Nick not sure what facilities you are referring to but I would the answer is because those who work at medical facilities are not ignorant about how infections occur and take general precautions for any potential illness.

Many with the disease that is now considered chronic are not gay, did not use drugs, they are women who were infected by men. Even if they were in the aforementioned category, what right do you have to say the stigma was deserved. Be kind to others, it will come back to you.
