In 2008, something incredible happened: a man was cured of HIV. In over 70 million HIV cases, this was a first, and, so far, a last, and we don’t yet understand exactly how he was cured. But if we can cure people of various diseases, like malaria and hepatitis C, why can’t we cure HIV? Janet Iwasa examines the specific traits of the HIV virus that make it so difficult to cure.

As a HIV positive person who also had AIDS Status and could live this video reached deep inside me. I mostly cried at the end of the video. The "one is immeasurable better than zero" is just the hope we still keep to see one day the cure.

@@kadenchiu1925 How can you possibly say that? AIDS spreads through blood also, so there was a chance they got AIDS from their AIDS-sick mother during childbirth or through the breastmilk. Nobody is purposely trying to get that. And saying they will be dead by that is just toxic.

You are strong, remember that your mind is stronger than everything, so practice ways to cure what you can with thoughts, manifestation and positive energy. So your way through this becomes easier, happier and it might even cure you faster, I believe you can control many aspects of your body with your mind (it takes time, believing and practice)

Recently, another person has been cured of HIV. The treatment was "extremely painful" but he was cured. Although he was cured, he said not having the treatment and just being stuck with his medicine and HIV might have been less painful or even more worth it. It was not necessarily the virus. Millions tested positive with the highly inaccurate HIV antibody tests then developed AIDS after being put on the drug AZT, which is one of the various causes of AIDS. Research it.

I'm a big fan of TED-Ed videos, because they are always so gorgeosly animated and include valuable information. And I just want to say that this video made me love this channel even more. They don't really teach you about hiv or aids at school and only make it associate with sex, even though it's also about lack of hygene and person may not know that he has it. I think no one on UA-cam has explained exactly what HIV is. They explain how you get it but other than the cure they don't seem to explain much.

they literally explained that its a retrovirus that effect t cells (cells that are part of ur immunity). it starts to destroy them over years eventually compromising ur immune system and not allowing u to properly defend yourself from otherwise considered "harmless" infections

Not to dishearten anyone, but the person who was cured of AIDS was diagnosed with cancer the very same year, with theories citing his bone marrow transplant as the cause of his cancer.

But how do we know this guy is cured and not simply with his HIV gene dormant?
according to what I've read, we can't know if he's 100% cured, but he has lived for many years without taking medication and there's no trace of the virus in his body, not even in places where the viral DNA usually "hides". So the best of our knowledge, he's free of it.
Actually, in 2014 researchers discovered that he still has genetic traces of HIV in his system, however, they determined that so little of the genetic material existed in him that it was essentially harmless. He is "functionally cured" as researchers determined.

+BBQboy MCS Or they are dying of something else? our technology is not that advanced to say a person is infected by a certain virus or bacteria - there is always an uncertainty level - about 1-2% for the most known diseases in the developed countries :) Everything else is less certain. So to be confirmed that 1 case in 70 000 000 is not entirely accurate. The scientific statement should look more like: 1 + or - 14 000 in 70 000 000.

My mom told me this story
A man who was diagnosed with HIV, he needed a bone marrow transplant. & months after the surgery, he went to the hospital for his HIV test. But when the doctor looked at his blood sample, there was no trace of it. What got me wondering about this video, was what kind of superior evolution would enable the virus to embed its DNA in the genome of the host? That requires(on some level) understanding the hosts system and how to take advantage of it, realizing what it need to do in order to survive/reproduce(like all living beings), all of that in such a tiny thing. Isn't it baffling?
