"The best athletes come from places where they have nowhere else to go." Josh dropping some wisdom!
I think that's true for good people too. I think only good people can come out of some of the worst scenarios with a smile on their face and keep going. Each one of these guys has had some crazy things happen in their life. (Homelessness, Combat, Broken Spine) yet here they are enjoying life. I think once anyone makes that mindset change they have no choice but to become great. Great in the eyes of people on stages? That's possible, but I think great in general. Great parent, great business owner, great local chef, great bartender, great little league coach, who knows man! I strive every day to switch my mindset and work to make the right choices for my future, this podcast is just one of the ways I stay inspired.

The CrossFit Games is the best marketing for the affiliates there is. Getting people off the couch that are watching it on TV that somewhere hold the delusion that if you go to your local gym and join, you can achieve a physique and high fitness level like the people you’re watching on TV. Funding the Games funds affiliates.

Absolutely agree with Josh’s ‘athletes have nowhere else to go’ concept, and you guys nailed it on the physical circumstances side. I would take it further to the mental/mindset nowhere else to go as well. The top athletes in the world who may have grown up a little ‘easier’ than others, perhaps inside of them they always felt like an outsider in their other involvements (‘other than athletics’ in this case, but could be anything), and they in turn developed a ‘this over everything’ view and approach to their sport and craft.
Of course nuance along the entire spectrum. As individual circumstances are so wildly unique, never to be fully understood by others and that applies to every single individual, and that’s the best thing about the sports field where in that moment the ‘rest’ doesn’t matter and you get to throw down with or against your peers. But you are absolutely correct Josh - in order to even have a place on the field you need to be the strongest mentally and mindset.
But I just wanted to throw that out there in addition to your conversation because I think you guys really touched on it well. It is a key element that I see on full display from all 3 of you - as it does not apply only to sports at all.
I really appreciate this content from you all and thank you for sharing. All the best

The way I understand it: The semifinal payouts were standardized by CF to equally pay the competitors given variance of location and available monies. Ie, Asia championship couldn’t afford to pay out the same as west coast and likewise didn’t bring in the same revenue thus the payout had to be capped across the board for equality (since athletes couldn’t choose where they were placed, per se). Dubai, rogue, Wodapalooza, etc (high payout comps) were intentionally left out of semis to provide those income opportunities during the offseason should athletes want to compete in them.

    • @wleng

Oooof this episode got heated. Surprised not to see other sport athletes defending the difficulty of their sport.
I personally think there’s a difference between sport vs methodology and professional athlete vs recreational athlete. Not a lot of people wanna put themselves through hell only to win a small prize purse. You grow the sport by showing people there’s money in the sport. The kids that play basketball, baseball, soccer, etc. want to grow up to be those superstar millionaire athletes. While the will to be fittest is awesome, it doesn’t pay the bills. So yeah, separate the two. CrossFit as a sport and CrossFit as a methodology.

At the same time I was benching 4550 lbs
    NO cross-fit then

Huge Matt fan, but the new metcons are UGLY! Looks like a 6yr old took a gold sharpie an squiggled all over em. Also the lightening bolt swoosh is really tacky. Metcon 6’s had the best silhouette
