I haven’t been to Washingtons house but i have been to places like that. I don’t feel guilty because I didn’t do anything. I do feel bad for the people who lived it and happy we are no longer in those times. But history is what it is. We need to learn what it was really like and i think that helps develop perspective on things.

No guilt here. My family came from Germany in the 1830's and lived in the Pennsylvania area.
I researched my family history and found that they fought for the Union (north)... I also found that at least 5 of my ancestors died in the Civil War.
One of them even died in a Confederate prison camp, in South Carolina.
My ancestors were on the right side of the conflict and were willing to die for it.

    • @AzBeautyFull
      @AzBeautyFull 5 місяців тому +8

That is a good thing to know, but if it were not the case and your family fought for the south. You should still be guilt free. At the end of the day, we are all humans of this time. No one today owns slaves, and no one today is a slave, in the sense of african history in america. As long as you live your life treating everyone you meet with respect, you are doing what you can to change the future of racial relations, which definitely has its degree of unblance, with varying degree of cause, though that is neither here or there. Unbalance exists and feeling guilty for the past is useless, until the problem comes down to individual respect for everyone, and we stop trying to divide ourselves with race bating.

@@AzBeautyFullyou are 100% right, but no time in the history of being called out for "your ancestors enslaved us" has your argument worked. (Unfortunately). However, I have deescalated one of these situations by bringing up how I actually know my ancestors did not. Sucks to have to bring up but alas.

I don't feel white guilt because I didn't commit those horrible crimes. But it is a sobering reminder of history. I find it fascinating but also terrible at the same time. When I say fascinating I don't mean I remove all emotion and context. But it is wild to think that at a certain time in history these horrible crimes were normal.

Grew up on some of Washingtons farm land so all of our school trips were to places like this, yes I have seen a slave actor and yeah it made everyone really uncomfortable. Doesn't even come close to the most fucked up thing though. Literally had us pick raw cotton before leaving and they were supposed to collect it apparently but they forgot, so the school had all the moms there the next day asking why their kids were brought to a plantation and picking cotton.

  • @tangomike3681

Never would've feel guilty for that. Slavery sucks, but every race has been enslaved. Even whites in the US at the time. Largest recorded lynching in the US was against whites.
It's good to learn from the past but it doesn't define who we are today. Show as much love as I can to everyone and lead a good life, and I'm good. Never really once cared about race or what their ancestors did.
Would it be awkward in there? For sure. But so is sitting at a party and some dude is having you listen to his music.

i’d go without guilt maybe some empathy that that shit was just happening to people in general but not with that sense of white guilt. most of my family came at the turn of the 20th century and at the end of the day im not english. back then America was just an extension of britain , they didn’t consider themselves american they were
british .. ben franklin was still working in the name of the king up until the start of the war.. that’s why it was wrong in the 80s when they would teach paul revere would say “ the british are coming “ during his ride .. he wouldn’t say that because he infact considered himself british as we’re both sides of the war

As a history major, I understand the oppression and discrimination in American history. At the same time, most black people have more of a history in America than myself. I'm 2nd generation native born. I'm mostly Danish. My grandparents came here in the 20s. Both of them were deaf. They owned a bakery. Most of my mom's side of the family is deaf. They were a persecuted people as well. My dad's family is German and came here in the 30s. They were poor farmers in the north. I know my grandma was racist...But as far as white guilt goes, I don't have much. My family wasn't part of it, and I ensure my kids know the history of the US. My kids are raised to see everyone as equal.

For sure there's a sense of guilt, but I think it varies. It's a really difficult thing to process because it's a wrong that can't be righted. Who do you blame? I can't take blame for something I had no part of, but ignoring sins of my ancestors feels wrong too.

In Jamaica, we went on a tour of some plantation where the Lady of the house had affairs with numerous of the male slaves and had them killed - I swear I could feel the souls of slaves there. It was so disturbing that I was having a hard time keeping my cool and not just outright cry - saddest place I've ever been - everyone in the group was wondering what was wrong but I just couldn't speak.

I went there when I was like 11 or 12. It was a nice day. I went around the property to the whiskey cellar and some old oak trees. Pretty sure I got a t shirt.
Slavery was mentioned, but not especially dwelt upon. There’s a “it was a different time” sort of vibe.
Like Shane said, you kinda go there to get pumped up on George.
I thought the teeth were freaky looking. The horse teeth have veins in them and look like wood, and thus the myth.
