      Great video. Did you say 5 yards of fabric? Did you split the fabric or sew the seam from the whole piece? I've got to build mine pretty soon. Looking for advice.

    Hi there, i just built 2 totems and went 3/4 size. i couldn't source 3 way fitting in my 3 hardware store. My boyfriend just screwd' the end caps directly on a veener base plate, and also fixed 4 end cap on elbow for the top (rather than using 3way)
    I also save 4 12'' parts at the bottom plate.
    its sturdy enough to find my 6 years old kid suspended on the 4way center piece
    thanks for sharing your video

      Am in the process of doing the same. Did you make the screws in the bottom plate flush ? If not does it impact the stability ?

    I have a quick question, can you provide more details on the fabric was sewed. Would like to do light columns for my church lighting project.

    These look great! I'm going to be making some for my events as well. The question I have is about cutting the Lycra. The Lycra I'm going to order comes by the yard and is 62 inches wide. I also watched the Atlanta DJ video and he said with his he was able to cut down the middle and make two scrims. Is that correct? That would mean each one would be 31 inches wide but would have to cover 48 inches (four 12 inch sides). I know lycra stretches but wasn't sure how much. How wide was the Lycra before you sewed it together? Thanks for your help and the great video!

      Thanks! You have about 2 inches of play or stretch on each side is the best way to describe it. The material is VERY stretchy and to be honest you want it as tight as possible because the material wrinkles very easily in the bag.

    Great Job man! The only question I had was where do the sell the material you used. I know, I know, but I've never bought fabric before and did not know if it was something found common at a Michaels, Hobby Lobby, ect... Instead of ordering online. Thank you sir!

      @KurtisCharlton  9 років тому

      Dominic Sustaita I picked mine up at JoAnn Fabric. Its pretty common. Just make sure its a "stretchy" material. preferably Lycra(has a Sheen to it) or plain old spandex wrks just as well.

      AtlantaMusicDJ.com It should! I got the idea from you lol. Works great! The only thing I changed was the top and bottom. It worked better that way with my pars. I made sure to credit the source in the video as well lol. Have a good one and thanks for watching

    Has anyone added an image or wording to theirs? We are wanting to make these for a gymnastics fundraiser and would like to have silhouettes and possibly words on the totem...if so, how did you do it?

    This are great, do you think painting the PVC black will give it a nice touch to it?

    • @KurtisCharlton
      @KurtisCharlton  8 років тому

      +Daniel Sileoni Sure! You can do that. Just be careful of the paint you use and be sure that its dry. Getting paint off of the fabric can be a bit of a pain! Thanks for watching!

    I just built this today and my final cost was about $45 (Home Depot and Lowes). I measured the dimensions and it is about 65" tall and 15" wide. I used 1" diameter tubing. Do you guys know if there are any pre-made scrims to cover this? I think most scrims are designed for a 12x12 truss. Thank you!

      Jake Burton I was just looking on Amazon and yes you can actually buy the slip covers for these in different sizes.. Probably a lot cheaper than actually going to a fabric store and then paying somebody to sew them up

    • @davieboy1970
      @davieboy1970 6 років тому +2

      I agree with Jake I was also looking on Amazon and actually ordered the scrims for the size truss I will be building. Amazon has all different sizes and even different colors but you have to make sure that you watch the reviews because there are some out there that are made really cheap and have a lot of badd reviews.. But in the long run you still are saving money instead of having to buy the material and have somebody so it for you

  • @djmadnez

    Help me understand this.. You said in your video specifically and exactly the way I heard it is that you used quarter inch PVC pipe.. Isn't that a little bit too flimsy and when I went to menards I could not find quarter inch pipe and I would not use that anyways. I used half inch PVC pipe..

    • @KurtisCharlton
      @KurtisCharlton  6 років тому +1

      davieboy1970 you can use any size pipe that you would like but I used 1 inch. The long pieces are 1 inch the elbows and t’s are 1 1/4 inch “receptacles”. I misspoke in the video and corrected it in the comments section lol. This video is a few years old and I’ve never had to replace a single piece. I bought all of the piping from Lowe’s or Home Depot Plumbing section. I’ve even seen people replicate this with iron pipe. The only reason to make this stronger is if you intend to place something on top, like a moving head, which I don’t recommend if you are doing it this way. I mentioned that in the video. This is purely decorative and packs down into a bag that any one can carry. Trussing is crazy heavy and crazy expensive. That was the reason for making these in the first place. I actually “upgraded” to full size truss and went BACK to these. Clients appreciate it too because kids are curious of the big glowing light poles and PVC Tipping on accident is much safer than steel. Just what has worked for me and the few hundred others that have made them for, DJing, events tables, convention booths etc. Good luck on your build man! If you do videos I’d love to see your finished product! That’s honestly been the coolest part of making this video.

    Are you able to put moving heads on top? Growing company on a tight budget. Already own 6 slimpars and soon buying more pars and moving heads.

    • @KurtisCharlton
      @KurtisCharlton  7 років тому +1

      No and I suggest that you don't either. These are too light weight to safely attach a moving head, no matter the size. It would hold it but stability is a HUGE issue. There is nothing to stop the head from toppling unit and the tower itself. A few people on YT have made really nice totems out of wood that work really well. I believe the guys name is DJ POLSKA07 on you tube. Great idea just not for the PVC version. Thanks for watching!

    Curtis, what diameter PVC are you using? 1 inch? larger? I like the concept of a "break down" glow totem for ease of transport. You convinced me that this approach will work for my needs. I will likely buy commercial scrim rather than build my own, thus 2 meter or 3 meter. I will probably opt for the 3 meter and simply build it in three "tiers". Then if the venue has a low ceiling, I can simply leave the third tier off and allow the "excess scrim" to be on top, out of sight. Thanks.

      +TonyWright 1 inch...Its very easy and still working and going strong. I bought the Metal Trussing and went back to this due to the weight difference. and pack ability.

      +TonyWright I appreciate the fast reply. I will be hitting the home improvement store in town to get the material for stands soon. We have a couple of events that would benefit from having this effect in the next week. Scrim already ordered.

    • @burtonjc

      Did the commercial scrim fit? Which one did you get. Thank you!

      As best I recall, I used 1 inch diameter PVC tube. Outside is about 1.25 inches. Corners and junctions are about 1.5 inches outside diameter. All from memory and the totem are not handy for me to measure. I made it a point to check my own dimensions at the time and the "box" structure is exactly 12 inches on all four sides. That made the middle "X" brace different than DJ Steve The Hammer used, and sorry I do not recall that measurement now. I know what scrim, I purchased Chauvet "TRUSST" brand 2 meter Truss Scrim. I ended up building five totem. I used them for maybe four events and have not had a need for them since. I probably could have rented, but I prefer to own and will find other events where they are the right tool or effect for the occasion. I am NOT a DJ, but I do sound production mostly for live bands. I have a client who does DJ gigs at a near by small town, so I provided lights for their high school prom and a prom that he booked, as well as a couple of gigs that I did production for locally. (They had the DJ, I provided lights and sound.) When building the PVC truss, we decided that 2 meters is taller than the average person's sight line (above their eyes) so fixtures on top and the gathered scrim on top would not appear unattractive. I elected to NOT glue mine permanently...yet. I carry mine in cordura style nylon Lighting Tripod Stand bags. I can get two complete 2 meter PVC box truss components and the scrim in one bag. We used the "box end" top and bottom. Then we used the "X" brace for the joint between the top and bottom sections. UNglued, I would NOT consider moving lights on top. I am not sure I would consider the civil liability of any fixture that could fall on a patron at one of the events. I strictly use mine with a LED fixture shining from bottom to top. We did not go to the effort to add white plywood top panel due to time and extra cost. They worked very well and I got plenty of compliments on this new feature/effect. TOTAL COST for five 2 meter PVC box truss along with carrying bags was around $500. Includes hiring my buddy (bought him dinner) for helping with the chop saw.

      Since I built my five 2 meter PVC glow totem towers, my "day job" (I am a stage tech at a local event venue) purchased some Global Truss for our portable "outdoor sound system" to use for stage lighting. Works fine for the stage lighting. Obviously, the PVC glow towers would not work for my employer's outdoor stage lighting requirements, but they work just fine for small town high school proms, wedding receptions and social events. There is a place for both. I am much too old to consider buying F34 box truss for my small private jobs. But for less money, I have five towers that will meet my needs for a long time to come as attention getting effects.

    And I did my measurements exactly like yours and you set in your video that yours is a 12 by 12.. But those measurements it comes out to be more like 14 by 14 or more.. After putting mine altogether it was very warped looking lol

    • @KurtisCharlton
      @KurtisCharlton  6 років тому +1

      davieboy1970 yeah the increase allows for the Lycra to stretch and become taut so that you don’t have to iron the scrims for every event. Mine comes out square every time not sure where the translation is lost if you’re having trouble. If you’re close to Pittsburgh Pennsylvania come on over, we’ll crack a beer and get to work lol

      About $30.00 in materials---I already owned the LED Pars so I guess that part would depend on where you get yours. Only suggestion is, don't use traditional non-led pars...this will light up like a christmas tree and not in a good way. Thanks for watching!

    These are really cool but I'm thinking if you have a big enough vehicle or are using a trailer you could Pretty much just leave them altogether and save yourself a lot of time.. Or I would even just leave the 3 square sections together and then all you have to do is just connect the longer Poles
