Wow I remember watching this video almost 4 years ago, now rollermats are so popular. Give it another 4 years and we'll look back and at changing socks like the idea of shooting for double zero PO4/NO3.
I have to say thank you BRS for what your doing for this hobby. This is awesome information well put together unbiased IMO and the correct balance of interest level, scienctific approach, information quality, and relative attention span to reach everyone in the hobby to some degree. I'm a successful third year reefer nearly 1000 gallons of saltwater around the house, and I rush to the computer to watch the new episode every friday!!! Home run! GREAT WORK KEEP IT UP!!!!
brs you guys really need to kick the videos up a notch again .. these types of videos help so much and there so entertaining to watch, another 52 weeks of reefing please :D
Wow, I was just thinking its time for BRS to upload their weekly series and 7 minutes later here it is. THE TIMING BTW I love this series!!! it is helping me setup my tank and what to do/not to do.
When I first saw this promoted last year at the show in Germany I just assumed it was another gimmick. Mentioning that you have tested this unit for four month is a BIG leg-up for the Rollermat. It's unlikely that it will be on my top ten list for things to get for my new tank build, it at least has made it on the list. Once again great going guys. Happy Holidays! Hope you get some down time to spend with friends and family.
I manually wash my filter socks. They then go into a plastic bucket with chlorine bleach/ water solution. When I get 3 to 4, I wash em in our washer. My wife is okay as long as they are washed/ rinsed and soaked in the bleach mixture. One thing I strongly suggest if you use a washer. Even without adding detergent, in our washer there is quite a build up. Our unit has a cleaning cycle and I always use this cycle before putting the socks in the machine. When I use that cleaning cycle, the rinse water is full of suds from prior washings. Most don't realize this because the drain hose is stuck down a laundry drain pipe. Really that water will be washing your socks. If you do not have a wash cycle, you can just run a regular was cycle. Choose largest load/ highest water level and hot water to flush out the residue soap.
I think this video explains the whole nitrate factory term perfectly. You only get a nitrate factory when you don't change or clean your mechanical filtration media. If you can't keep zero nitrates for a month before cleaning than your problem is your lack of biological filtration. That's why I used sachem matrix. Biohome is also good. It takes care of the nitrates. I use a canister filter rated for 25g on my 10 g nano with no problems. People talk crap about canister filters but it's all the same principle. mechanical-->biological-->chemical/skimming
Great video! I got away from sump socks, because I hate cleaning them. I'm doing something else now. This product looks kinda cool but I don't like the size and unfortunately won't fit in my sump. thanks BRS!
Obviously an unnecessary piece on this recommendation. But I have to give you the thumbs up on the coolness factor of it. For my tank I will be sticking wit the felt filter socks. I am playing with the idea of mesh pad on top to capture the larger particles in hopes the socks would last a little longer. No idea if this is worth the trouble. I do have to say though, I work in the wastewater industry and this reminds me of the belt presses used to separate water from the solids captures in wastewater treatment plants. If space and money were no object, I would definitely have this in my cabinet. Sadly, money is an object and my current sump is an Emerald 34 and just don't see this interfacing nicely within the confines of a tall 110. Merry Christmas Ryan!
Filter socks are a catch 22. This is how I minimize my disdain for them: I use before cleaning the glass, leave in place for three more days and remove. At this rate I only use 2 socks in a month. Socks are not needed in a reef tank as long as you have a solid W.C.. schedule. Same with the Triton method,- do not use socks ( some still do though). Others use Bacteria sources and that it self eliminates sock use.You the reef owner should experiment to see if they are indeed needed in your particular setup. Me, I hate them-It is one less piece of maintenance to worry about, however, a good tool to minimize sedimentation. So, there you go. But, yeah, I still use them (Mesh, 100 micron) sparingly on my tanks.
I have 2 pairs of filter socks so every 3 days I remove one pair , put it in the washer and replace it with the other pair that I washed the week before when I was cleaning the filter dock of last week
Personally I still like the old fashion sponge as the first stage of mechanical filteration. It never has to be changed and is a great place for bacteria to colonize. Cleaning just requires a couple squeezes.
+Jeff K It is but it's also a great place for particulates to build up. Squeezing isn't enough. You have to pressure wash it because there are things DEEP DEEP inside that squeezing won't get out especially if you're using the dirty water from a water change. That's why it's better to just leave your biological filtration to just your biological media. I personally like to keep it in a filter bag so it doesn't get dirty.
I change my filter socks out as part of weekly maintainence. The roller is cool but no way I could justify the price tag associated with it. Maybe down the road when more companies jump on board and the market demand increases, the price will be more reasonable.
I have a request; could you guys start doing a one minute or so front tank shot at the end of each weeks video? That way we can see how the tank itself is progressing rather than just the set up. I'm curious about how the tanks looking.
I think the Rollermat is an interesting piece of equipment but my concern with it is if you have to continually throw away the paper and replace it as it fills up is that it sounds unsustainable compared to a simple filter sock which is just rinsed and washed here or there. Since it lasts a few months it isn't terribly unsustainable but if your tank lasts several years that's at least 16 rolls of filter paper that you will have to use or throw away. If they could make the rollermat run off of a mesh like material that rolls up the same way it would definitely be more sustainable.
I love how complicated this system is. it is unlikely my freshwater sump will utilize this type of mechanical filtration. filter socks are very simple and a much cheaper investment. at nearly $400 USD for a minor amount of automation, it seems like it will only appeal to those going for the techy approach to their filtration system. IMO, cool, but unnecessary.
+BulkReefSupplyCom its luxury because its the only one around , when these things will get smaller and more agile they may give skimmers a hard time fillin theyre cups , if lets say the rollers get the ability to absorb coral waste wheres the need for the skimmer ? t
+Freemananana its like sayin , why are there all these 500+ hp trucks while i can deliver my mail with my bicycle literally sw and fw management is that far , i remember raising guppies was as simple as 2 lines in utube comment section like : tank water dechlor heater , floss carb ceramic lid on place in tank , aquarium lid any kind of light source ready , clean filter every week before water change , feed acordingly , its 2 lines and a word and trust me , guppies have been raised happily such easily AND its not that simple in SW take care and doubletriple check ur diy sketches , thats what drove me off the hobby for almost 10 years
I like to use my canister filter after a major tank cleaning. Shut my pump down to my sump and run the canister filter with just foam water polishing pads to clean the display tank. But other than that i have no real need for it on my saltwater tanks.
Great looking piece of equipment! :D The price for this mechanical filtration will hopefully decrease, once other companies jump on the band wagon. That leaking bulkhead at 10:24, though... :/
Hi Ryan, this looks amazing. Although somewhat costly, it seems that it can be worth buying if it is not noisy and if the fish waste and debree caught in the rollermat does not interfere with the nitrates and phosphates in the main tank. I guess it does not, but can you please comment, also a word or two on noice level. Excellent videos!
+BulkReefSupplyCom Hi Ryan, so far so good. Did you have time to think about the correct flow through Rollermat? It is recommended to be 2500-3000 liters/h. Does the functionality get worse with flow rated of around 1500 liters/hour? Any thoughts on this?
Hey guys! can you start putting some video of the tank at the end of the episodes. I want to see how the fish and invertibrates are doing in your rock!
The day after I installed filter socks I went looking for a Rollermat. Put in the socks, change the socks, wash the socks non-stop. Vacation? Who will change the socks?
Innovative Marine offers their heater controller in two different models. The first is the Helio PTC featured in this video. That heater controller will only work with their Helio PTC heating elements. They also have a Helio universal controller that will work with any heaters (up to 1000w total) that have a standard 120v plug. The universal model will shut off and sound an audible alarm if the current temperature of the water raises above the high alarm set point.
G'day guys, loving all your work on these vids. I was wondering if you could review the Klir roller mat, I'm pretty sure they are made in the US and the are more available to people around the world that the one from Germany. As I said you guys are the best out there so keep it up :)
The rollermat is awesome well except for the price :) If you have a small non-drilled tank what is your best option? A HOB filter with filter floss changed every couple of days? One option that is tedious that I've used is stirring everything up and repeatedly siphoning buckets of water through a felt sock and pouring the filtered water back in. I'll be interested in seeing your guys take on supplementation, I just ordered some Kalk and Bicarbonate from you as I have low ALK but everything else is good.
Awesome stuff, expensive but might be worth it, I do hate that u guys drilled that beautiful sump, but you gotta do what u gotta do, how is that skimmer working, whats the best depth?? most skimz skimmer dont say, thx
Could anyone let me know what are those white shrimp like things that is found at 2:26?. I have them in my tank's sump as well. They look like mysis shrimp but I feed my fishes flakes. Are they Copepods?
I have three ones a Spare the other one is just to change out the other one on Sundays when I do my water change then I clean it and leave it to dry for 3 days for the next Sunday that's my filter sock schedule the third one is always there as a spare in case one breaks somehow
Hello! I want to buy this product! Please tell me what is the maximum watter input for this filter! I want to know how many liters/hour can I pass thrue this filter! If I pass all my return watter from aquarium to the sump (5000 liters/hour) is it ok? Or I need to put an pump with lower debit? Wich is the maximum debit that can pass thrue this filter? Please reply! Thank you!
Hey Ryan, how come you don't power down the tank during feeding for 10 minutes or so to allow the fish to consume the food instead of it just going into the overflow?
Hi and merry Christmas I revived a nuvo 20 for Christmas with the stock Skye lights. Do you think I could keep an Acropora? I would have mainly lps and softies but want to try an acro thanks
Are you planning to use any macro algae in your sump or anywhere else in this build? In looking at your setup there doesn't seem to be any place where you would put it. I am wondering because I am rebuilding a sump and was questioning whether or not I really needed the macro. Thanks for any help and I love the videos. I wish every company operated like Bulk Reef Supply!
+Madison Freeman I noticed the same thing. I am setting mine up with a refugium and highly recommend it based on my experience with a 90 gallon reef. But each person's approach is different. If nothing else, get a sump with the refugium chamber and if you decide you don't want to go that way, it will give you extra space for reactors.
That could work, but would be very dependent on skimmer size vs turnover rate. Not to mention that most reefers don't run a recirculating style skimmer. Not impossible, just not very common.
Come on guys... while canister filters can be a pain i agree, they absolutely work if you know how to use them properly and in the right circumstances. I run a Hydor 350 on a 46G bow front with ridiculous success, and i only clean it twice a month. Softies, LPS, and yep... SPS too :)
I know people that have worked there and that's one of the stupid answers on their tests they make you take. Most of the answers on their tests are totally wrong. It's sad.
rollermat has max flow rate recommendation of 600 gph. That implies 3.75x turnover per hour for this 160 gallon aquarium. what flow rate is your return pump putting out?
+BulkReefSupplyCom - What size is the Synergy Reef Overflow that you are using on this 160 tank? You sell the 16 inch on your site, which comes with 1 inch drain bulkheads. The BRS support team said that you are running 1-1/2 inch drain tubing on the tank. That would mean you're using the 20 inch version of the Synergy Overflow right? If so, do you plan on carrying the 20 inch version?
You said it is a European product, can you give me a link to a uk site? Or who the uk/European supplier is? Would be interested in taking a closer look!
BulkReefSupplyCom Well here’s my hypothesis on that. Since the filter sock is elevated, water will always take the least resisted path. When portions of the sock gets clogged, water will just glance off it seeking another way out. Hence contact time with clogged detritus is less compared to if the sock is submerged entirely where all the trapped gunk is in the water column. I happened on this thought because I use a media cup with filter floss instead of a sock in an elevated design. Whenever I clean the floss, I noticed that there is dry debris as the water bypasses the debris looking for an easier way down. It’s the same reason why you don’t recommend water flowing down on media due to channeling, well channeling works in our favor here!
We ended up removing the rollermat on the BRS160 when we switched over to the Triton method, but it was working until the very end. We've since installed other rollermats on a number of tanks like our new Red Sea Reefer 750. They definitely cut down on maintenance :)
Nice thinking bout doing a diy one I've seen those filtration system in huge shrimp farming set up any tips in Diy build give me a heads up#1 filtration dawg
One question, how should we dry or treat the bags after the wash? And does the TDS of the water entering the washing machine matter after they are dried out? I've been buying ecofelt fabric for super cheap at joann fabric and sewing the bags myself. I don't wash them before I use them for the first time and they work incredibly. However, its becoming taxing due to the fact that I max out at 48 hours of usage before its completely clogged up and have to sew a new one every time. I have about 40 bags I can wash now but I'm scared to put them in the washer without further knowledge. Tank has too much live stock a this point to chance it.
+Daniel Mijares I personally don't worry about the TDS of the water being used to wash the socks since the spin cycle leaves the socks almost completely dry. Very little water is left over to dry on the socks. If you're sufficiently curious you could try washing a few socks and after they come out of the wash soak them in some 0 TDS water and check what the tds of the water after is. if it is high enough that it concerns you, just soak them in DI water before you use them.
+Daniel Mijares I usually just soak mine in bleach/water to help break down organics as I pull the socks and then throw them all in the washer once I collect enough of them. The spin dry cycle is all thats needed to dry them. If I think of it, I'll give each sock a quick rinse in tap water before I put them in the tank. I really dont worry about the the TDS of the water since a single feeding contains WAY more nutrients than an ounce or two of tap water ever would.
someone help me out here ... to ME it makes WAY more sense to feed the input (dirty) water into the CENTER of the wheel (what is now the output but should be the input) and then make the output the hole at the bottom. this way everything gets caught in the filter ... EVERYTHING ... it goes into the filter chamber and comes out on the reservoir side clean. so, my question is, why do they seem to be flowing the water backwards???
Every time I change my filter sock my skimmer goes crazy, I have to turn it down and then wait about 15 min to adjust it. Have you guys noticed any change with the skimmer with continuous new paper being used. Just a thought.
+BulkReefSupplyCom the socks are new, actually bought a dozen from you guys about a month ago. I made sure to wash them with a cup a bleach and rinsed them three times afterward and then they dried for two days afterwards. I've done that with all the socks I've ever had and I've always had the skimmer issue.
Trigger sumps now have Rollermat options, and there are also other compact versions created by Theiling, and other companies like Klir that we would check out.
+Joe Rice I have not used this item before but from what I saw in the video and the way it appeared to be plumbed, I would image this is very quite with no splashing until it reaches the overflow line.
It's too big size wise and I have a pretty big sump? I put a mesh bag inside both my 200 micron 7" bags and that pre breaks up solids and traps big stuff ahead of the bag. Every week wash replace. If that was smaller would use.
One thing I do with the socks is they are above the sump water line in the sump so they don't leach as heavy floating/soaking in the water continuously.
Design flaw water flow should've been other way around on roller Matt so small particles don't sit and break down you did video around 2014 roller Matt no electric motor that was good design
It says it will catch decaying food and elements to keep the tank free from nitrogen build up. But yet the paper towel is under the water. How come its any better than good old socks ?? Its unnecessary imo.
Wow I remember watching this video almost 4 years ago, now rollermats are so popular. Give it another 4 years and we'll look back and at changing socks like the idea of shooting for double zero PO4/NO3.
I have to say thank you BRS for what your doing for this hobby. Wow, I was just thinking its time for BRS to upload their weekly series and 7 minutes later here it is. THE TIMING
BTW I love this series!!! it is helping me setup my tank and what to do/not to do.
Wow. That rollermat is awesome.
+BulkReefSupplyCom can't blame you for that. Took long enough for someone to come up with it.

Love that sump!
Amazing video! Love it!
That is certainly a clever design if you want to remove food particles.
This setup is becoming so awesome!

Its cool and all but I don't see myself ever using this unless it was given to me. lol.
Another great video. I imagine there was high-fives all around when that anthias(?) finally pooped (3:06)
We can totally DIY that thing :)
+Osama Kamel Already did- cost me $30 :) www.reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2552341

Leaking tanks are no fun :P
Great video Ryan! I'm sitting here trying to figure out how I can make a roller mat fit in my sump and stand....
Thanks for the info, but where is the fuge? Will there be any videos on refugiums?

Have you thought of plumbing the overflow directly to the input of the skimmer to eliminate the filter sock or roller mat?
That could work, but would be very dependent on skimmer size vs turnover rate. Not to mention that most reefers don't run a recirculating style skimmer. Not impossible, just not very common.
The roller mat is like toilet paper for marine aquariums.
Come on guys... while canister filters can be a pain i agree, they absolutely work if you know how to use them properly and in the right circumstances. I run a Hydor 350 on a 46G bow front with ridiculous success, and i only clean it twice a month. Softies, LPS, and yep... SPS too :)
SPS require a high nutrient environment so if you're caring for them you wouldn't want to clean it more than twice a month....
+Alec Ward This is incorrect. SPS like low nutrient systems and LPS prefer high nutrient.
+Alec Ward You work at petco don't you...? lol
Mike how did you know?! /s
I know people that have worked there and that's one of the stupid answers on their tests they make you take. Most of the answers on their tests are totally wrong. It's sad.
+bulkreefsuplycom do you have a list of the supplies you used in the frag tank (aquaponics tray) in the propagation series
Is 600GPH enough flow for this size tank?
rollermat has max flow rate recommendation of 600 gph.
Awesome, thanks, I thought so. I ordered a 20" version from Synergy, it should be here soon!
You said it is a European product, can you give me a link to a uk site? Or who the uk/European supplier is? Would be interested in taking a closer look!
Is a filter sock more effective if it is elevated so that it is not submerged in the water?
Can I seed my tank with Copepoda and amphipods if I have the roller mat? Also should I remove my three 100 micron filter socks?
+BulkReefSupplyCom the filter socks are for the main drain then the second drain goes into the rollermat so why do I need to remove the socks?
your plumbing looks nice but is insanely complex compared to most systems. lfs would charge 5 grand to set something like that up lol.
How has the Rollermat held up over time? do you still use it? Do you still recommend it?
We ended up removing the rollermat on the BRS160 when we switched over to the Triton method, but it was working until the very end. We've since installed other rollermats on a number of tanks like our new Red Sea Reefer 750. They definitely cut down on maintenance :)
Nice thinking bout doing a diy one I've seen those filtration system in huge shrimp farming set up any tips in Diy build give me a heads up#1 filtration dawg
So does this sit ontop of the sump @BulkReefSupplyCom, and then the water flows out of the Rollermat and down into the sump?
Could this mean that one could convert sock area into a refugium? Depending on the sump design of course.
No brs because of Christmas? Humbug!
what does SPS stand for? for us beginners over here in the far corner lol
+Chloe Xxxx SPS coral = small polyp stony coral
at 10:19 is there a hairline crack in your inlet bulkhead? It looks like a water droplet fell.
EVERYTHING ... it goes into the filter chamber and comes out on the reservoir side clean.
so, my question is, why do they seem to be flowing the water backwards???
oh, shit, i just realized why... the water level would never activate the switch if it was done the way that seems best to me... yeah, i get it now ;)
Every time I change my filter sock my skimmer goes crazy, I have to turn it down and then wait about 15 min to adjust it.
Are there any American made alternatives to this product? It looks like a potentially interesting addition to my setup.
Trigger sumps now have Rollermat options, and there are also other compact versions created by Theiling, and other companies like Klir that we would check out.
How noisy is the Rollermat system? Water falling into my 7" filter sock is probably the noisiest aspect of my sump.
+Joe Rice I have not used this item before but from what I saw in the video and the way it appeared to be plumbed, I would image this is very quite with no splashing until it reaches the overflow line.
4:37 why is there a peppermint shrimp in the sump?
lol
Are you still running this on the 160? I’ve heard rumors of gear failure and curious how reliability has been for you?
Do people find an issue with washing them in the washing machine?? Does it not get chemicals on from the last wash??
No issues. If it gives you peace of mind, you can always run a rinse cycle before washing the socks.
@@BRStv very true, thanks for the reply
It's too big size wise and I have a pretty big sump? I put a mesh bag inside both my 200 micron 7" bags and that pre breaks up solids and traps big stuff ahead of the bag. Every week wash replace.
If that was smaller would use.
Would certainly use it if it fit. Who knows what will come along next. Your sumps are clearly "skies the limit" so can see no problem for room there.
One thing I do with the socks is they are above the sump water line in the sump so they don't leach as heavy floating/soaking in the water continuously.
should i need to use the roller mat system in my 90 gallon fish only tank...nd wat is the cost of this system????
BulkReefSupplyCom i m from india ..so from where will i buy it!!
Come on Theiling, for 400 bucks you could at least give us an optical eye instead of a float switch. Very cool design nonetheless.
Until it overflows. I hate playing with what ifs. Might want to make sure it can handle a complete failure.
+BulkReefSupplyCom Rules were made to be broken. Some of them at least. :)
does the dirty roller paper smell bad?
+Ryan Cooper nm
Perfect fit for a 40 breeder you say...hmm...how to makew this work with an ATS.
*runs off to the drawing board*
make this fit in a redsea 500L s-line? impossible?
Is there any way to just hook this up to my tank (no sump) astetics be damned, i just want the best filtration without a sump.
+BulkReefSupplyCom Thanks you, I have a cabinet above my tank now so that seems practical enough. Expect a purchase soon :D
I wanna talk about Ryan today ^.^ .
what's the name of the fish with yellow spots. ty
2:54 mins. ty
I checked at Live Aquaria they don't have. ty
Hope to get one of that guy. thank you for your prompt respond.
HOW MUCH?
so now instead of maintaining your reef you can maintenance your rollermat.
Design flaw water flow should've been other way around on roller Matt so small particles don't sit and break down you did video around 2014 roller Matt no electric motor that was good design
its too big for my Red Sea 350, maybe late they will have smaller version.
Thank you, I maybe will ask my husband if he can do it for me.
Drip at 10:24
You haven't see what kids catch in their diapers!
Think he could make the vid in under 10 min? :)
It says it will catch decaying food and elements to keep the tank free from nitrogen build up.
But yet the paper towel is under the water.
How come its any better than good old socks ??
Its unnecessary imo.
4:59 :D :D :D :D :D
