Your lessons are great! One thing I would appreciate is a lesson on how to make that tone! I have bought and own 5 different amps and line 6 effects with a PA. Hearing the correct tone makes it all awesome! Your tone in this lesson is perfect! Thanks!
Hi Jeff and thank u so much for checking out this lesson and for your kind words and support - so appreciated. Yeah, getting the right tone for a given situation is so inspiring and empowering but it also can be a frustrating task if you cant seem to get the right sound dialed in. Let me make a few suggestions that may help u on this topic. First, keep it simple, at least at first, you dont need much gear. If you want a tone like I am getting in this lesson its pretty basic - just a light overdrive, a splash of reverb, and a humbucking pickup setting on the guitar. They key is the right amount of gain or overdrive and how you hook up the pedal. I dont know what types of amps or pedals you have but a good base way to get a overdriven rhythm tone is to use an overdrive pedal in front of the amp. Like a tube screamer or overdrive pedal. But the trick is hook it up like this - right out of the guitar and then into the input of the pedal and then right out the output of the pedal and into the input of your amp. So the pedal goes in front of the amp. Then on the pedal turn the gain or overdrive down and the level up. This kicks the amp a bit and drives it harder so you can get some nice tones, especially at lower volume levels. You dont need much gain at all. And use a humbucking pickup on your guitar. A splash of reverb would be nice too. You can also use the gain in the amp if you have that but again you have to tweak it to get just the right amount. Try that first and let me know if you have any follow up questions. Enjoy the journey and remember that your playing is an evolution Jeff. The answer isnt to buy more stuff so to speak but to work with what you have and just tweak things a bit at first - more gear later down the road :) Enjoy and stay tuned - lots more lessons and songs coming soon. Keep up all that hard work on that guitar. Take care, and rock on! -David Taub, Next Level Guitar Inc. & EGI
