    For what I do, I usually use my Audio Technica microphone for voice overs, or my Shure microphone on camera. Both record in stereo. It depends on the recording, time of day, and my voice, if I decide to convert to mono or keep at stereo. This was informative as always.

      Thank you. It's interesting to hear what equipment other creators have and how they use it.

    I got a voiceover job tomorrow and just got the h4n, this is a lifesaver, thanks!

    Worked wonders for me, however I had to install the H4N Pro driver before it started working. Windows would detect it but no sound would be recorded / detected.
    Installing the Windows drivers fixed this.
    Worked instantly out of the box on my Linux pc lol

    This is fantastic. Was about to purchase a new podcasting microphone, but this was fantastic. Wonderful tip about using a mono track!

    Thank you, sir! That was extremely helpful! I usually have my usb mic when travelling and go directly into Audacity on my laptop but I didn't bring it this time but I do have my H4n Pro so all good!
    Many thanks again for all your effort it making this video - we, the people, truly appreciate it!
    Cheers!

      @@DIYVideoStudio Thank you! Unexpected podcast recording - hence, no USB mic with me!
      Thanks again!

    I'm thinking, the off center mic could still have a use if your narration has "asides," it's like litterally a side listener.

      Possibly. You could experiment and see how it works.

    Very helpful and especially pleased you use Audacity to edit. Question: I have an earlier H4 (not an "n" series) that offers mic modeling for it's built-in mics. Does the H4n or Pro offer the same Zoom mic modeling of famous microphones (i.e. U87, etc.)? Thank you in advance.

      @DIYVideoStudio  4 місяці тому

      It's been a long time since I last used the old H4 (that was when I worked in a radio station) and mic modelling is not a feature I recall using. It's not something I've seen in the H4n or H5.

    I tried using my h4n pro as a usb mic, connected it to my pc (windows 10). it showed me input on the vu meter of the zoom and i selected it as i/0 on my pc and the daws i tried. however, neither of the daws (audacity, cakewalk, ableton) seemed to received any input (no levels) and the recordings had no audio. any idea what the problem could be?

    This is a good video but it still doesn't bloody well work. So annoying when you set things up properly, press record (or use Zoom as in a online meeting) and then nothing records.

    Can the same thing be done using the XLR interface(s), rather than the USB interface?

    • @DIYVideoStudio
      @DIYVideoStudio  9 місяців тому

      If you mean, can you use external microphones plugged into the XLR inputs instead of the built-in XY mics, and use the H4n as an audio interface for your computer., yes you can. What you can't do is use all four inputs (the XY mics plus Inputs 1 & 2), since the interface is strictly 2 input / 2 outputs.

    • @chazfaz3595

      @@DIYVideoStudio Thanks for the quick reply. But no, that's not what I mean. I'm wondering if I can employ the two built in microphones as XLR stereo inputs to my DAW, and bypass the H4N's internal recording mechanism.

    • @DIYVideoStudio
      @DIYVideoStudio  9 місяців тому +1

      @@chazfaz3595 I think I've got you now. You want to input the built-in XY mics into an audio interface/mixer with XLR inputs and then record in your DAW. In theory, you should be able to take a feed from the Headphone/Line output and send it to your XLR audio interface. You will need a cable with a 3.5mm TRS at one end and a male XLR connector at the other. That would send the output from both XY mics to a single XLR channel (stereo->mono). If you want to keep the audio from each of the built-in mics separate and feed the left and right into two XLR inputs, you'll need a Y-splitter breakout cable with a 3.5mm TRS (stereo) jack at one end and 2 male XLR connectors at the other ends. I think this video may help you, ua-cam.com/video/OLs8JYeJm7g/v-deo.html but the adapter cable I use in the video has female XLR connectors, you'll need to find a Y-splitter breakout cable with male XLR connectors. If your interface uses XLR/TRS combo inputs, like the Scarlett 2i2, you could use a 3.5mm TRS to dual 1/4" jack breakout cable. You will need to adjust the output level so as not to overload the inputs on your XLR interface. The only thing that concerns me is that you say you want to, "bypass the H4N's internal recording mechanism". Well, you don't need to record on the H4n, but the signal from the built-in mics will go through the internal preamps. Unfortunately, there's no way to bypass them. Good luck.
