When a KITCHEN Remodel becomes a WHOLE HOUSE Remodel 😳

- This week we have to make massive strides. We need to reframe around the fireplace so the mason can re-build the façade. We need to re-frame the hallway to make more room. We need to build the platform for the new furnace, and cut our all the old Knob and tube electrical, so we can add in new wiring. It's a ton of work, and my assistant Luis is on a timer. How much can we get done in a week?

Congrats to Luis. We will all mourn your sleep and celebrate your family!
The real loss of sleep is when she turns 16!!
@@bluecurlygirl raise them right and you won’t lose any sleep.
@@bluecurlygirlThat reminds me of the movie Species.
@@rjgaynor8 Yeah sure because how you raise your daughter is going to influence everyone else that she will encounter when she starts going out into the world. Raise your daughter right and there'll be no such thing as muggers (or worse) and everyone will drive safely right? Can I come and move into your world please? Where I live when your daughter goes out for a night you're hoping and praying that she'll make it home safe. My lassie starts college in September. I'm going nuts with worry. Every other day here in Ireland the tv news is broadcasting "another woman murdered today". So you can put that in your sanctimonious pipe and smoke it.
Congratulations, Luis!
Agreed! Congratulations! Wish you and the whole family happiness. 🎉🎉🎉
Moving that furnace to the attic is golden, so much space saved, plus all new ducting to make the system more efficient. Love the construction stuff as much as the woodworking stuff.
Congrats, Luis! Tip for the new parents: SLEEP WHENEVER YOU CAN. The baby is asleep? You sleep too. The both of you are exhausted? One takes a nap, the other watches the kid, then you switch shifts. And if you can, have family members take the kiddo for a night so you can get a full night's rest whenever you can. Trust me on this, sleeping wherever, whenever (Except when you're driving!) is the best skill to learn when you're a new parent. Also, if you're still accepting gifts for the new baby, tell everyone you want prepaid gift cards. Getting things in certain sizes guarantees that you'll end up throwing out something because the kiddo has already grown out of that size.
If you're nursing it can take a long time before the kid can sleepover somewhere else. I have a 2 year old and a 4 year old and we just had our first night kid free since the oldest was born.
@@titosrevenger - I remember my SIL often being in some discomfort if my niece hadn't fed in a while, so I think a breast pump should be considered an essential bit of kit even for a stay at home mum - anything to make those first few months easier is a good thing.
For the benefit of anyone who might not be aware, there are now pumps on the market designed by mums, making them easier and more comfortable to use. Look for those made by femtech companies owned and run by women.
Parenting newborns is 90% sleep management for sure! We put a bed in beside the crib, then took turns sleeping there. This way we always had one of us to keep our eyes on the baby, and the other got to close the door and sleep without worry for the night.
Wearing the Laura Kampf T-shirt in one of the previous videos was ominous enough :D
Yep, I put that shirt on and instantly find water damage 😂
Ok I LOL'd at this comment 😂😂😂
Maybe she should start marketing those t-shirts like dowsing rods... 😂
Better to know about it than not!
@@titosrevenger or a perfect anonymous gift for your least favourite neighbour :D
I'm so relieved. As a framer of 20 years, I feel so intimidated with the shop builds. Watching the repair of rotted stuffs and joists, I'm at home. Suddenly it's just another day at the office. Some day I'll have a shop and room to explore finer wood working. Cheers from the west sound.
"And while we are at it" can be the most expensive words ever.
Michael, if you're interested in seeing a new roof deck spray foam install in person, let me know. I just had my new garage attic done two weeks ago and live in the same part of the city as you. I'm happy to share the details of what I paid, the vendor I used, etc offline. The progress on the house looks good, keep it up!
Congrats to Luis and wife. New babies are the best.
3:13 seems like that's your problem as far as water intrusion is concerned. No flashing at the interface between the brick and the wood siding. (You might mention this later in the video, just making the comment as soon as I saw it).
Yeah it was only a caulk joint 😬 I’ll fix that when I repair the siding
@@MichaelAlm 👍 nice, that should help a lot.
Congrats, Luis! May your sleep suffer little, and your family be happy, healthy, and prosperous. ❤
I've always hated attic hatches in closets. I get the inclination, but it's so ridiculous. Big proponent of putting access in a hallway where there's room for a good sized hatch and you don't have to completely empty your closet every time you want to get up there.
I'm really enjoying this series. It's clear that you put time and consideration into everything that you do, and take real pride in the work.
Congratulations Luis, my baby girl just got married. It goes quick, hold her tight.
Congratulations, Luis!
Michael, that popsicle stick trick is solid gold.
Congratulations, Luis being a Dad is the best!!! Also hope you get enough sleep.
The popsicle trick was a really nice tip!
Here's one from me; if you're looking at a fridge with an icemaker, really get informed on the reliability of those icemakers. I bought a samsung fridge a couple years back and the icemakers in those are (I learned to my expanse later on) absolutely atrocious and break down constantly.
Thanks! Luis did a ton of research on fridges and we’re going with Bosch. Sounds like the Samsung ones are riddled with issues
Anyone I've talked to that had Samsung appliances has had issues with them. Samsung makes great electronics, but their appliances are just horrible. lol Don't know why. I went with GE appliances for my kitchen. They're still working great after a few years.
Regarding attic insulation, Oregon code (and I'm sure Washington too) requires new HVAC to be placed in conditioned space. Your HVAC contractor should know for sure, but your code inspector for your permits (that I hope you applied for before beginning!) will probably call out you need to do full roof insulation as your project is most definitely a "substantial remodel".
A new baby to Luis' family. Congrats!
Nothing's ever simple, especially after 60 years, but it's beginning to really take shape now.
Congratulations to Luis. May your futures be bright and full of love.
Luis! Congratulations, enjoy being a dad, it’s the best. Cheers
"Crossed every T and dotted every I" - that's a new expression i learned.
Great job, btw. Looking good.
Oh, and CONGRATS, Luis!
Congratulations to Luis and his wife 🎊 . The house is looking great can’t wait to see it finished
Today is Father's Day here in Brazil so double congrats Luis!! 🎉
It's always the same case everywhere... "we'll just make a closet" or "we'll just do that wall"... And before you know it the entire house is being rebuilt.
Same thing here. Our house is over 250 years old and initially my wife just wanted a closet upstairs... We've been at it for over 3 years now and every single room, ceiling and floor is being done. It's part of the game 😋
Congratulations to the new Mom and Dad!
You accomplished soooo much. Well done to both of you. And Huge congrats to Luis and his partner on their new arrival. Such an exciting time.
Congratulations to Luis! Enjoy your time with your little girl!
Congratulations Luis! It’s the hardest yet most rewarding job you’ll ever have. Enjoy every single moment as they grow so quick. Michael, enjoying the house reno and I’m sure they always will pull in tons of newer viewers.
Congrats Luis, wishing health and happiness to your family!
I've never seen a temporary wall framed like that, with the vertical members on an angle. If you've covered that before, please let me know the video. If not, I'd be interested to hear more about that. Thank you!
Congratulations dad, mom and baby girl!
Congratulations to Luis on the new baby!
Thanks for the video. My house is built in 1935 and this videos giving me ptsd of past projects and I just started a kitchen remodel. Scared of what we’re going to find.
@Michael, I like the footage of the masonry work. I shared on my community page and my Facebook to see how much support my tiny community would muster. I'm ok with that because I dont think a whole lot of my subscribers read my community post😊 and I'm getting over my fears of being in social media😅
Wow! Everyone involved just banged out a TON of work! So cool to see so much change in just one video. Congrats to Luis!
Congratz on the kiddo! 🎉
Congratulations Luis!
Thanks for bringing us along Michael ... you do tell (and video) a good story.
Regards,
R
CONGRATULATIONS LUIS!
Congratulations Louis to you and your wife on your baby girl. Hope mom and baby are healthy.
Congratulations Luis on becoming a dad! All the best luck for you and your family 😊
Congratulations to Luis and his family on their new living addition. May your baby grow up healthy and loved and a fulfilled individual with many interests and skills. ❤
This is my favorite youtube reno series so far! Love the narration and editing. Also seeing an older home get so well updated is very satisfying.
No flashing next to the chimney best you can do now is foam and some sika flex .Good Luck with no sleep Camp Luis welcome to the club.
Man, watching this series reminds me so much of watching This Old House as a kid with my grandpa on Saturday morning. I am not handy AT ALL, but I run and watch every new video you put out! Big fan!
This is legit me living out my TOH dream 😂
Congratulations, Luis and Mrs Luis!
Papa Luis, congrats on the birth of your daughter! How exciting. Michael, this is almost as exciting! The house is really coming along and as a veteran carpenter, you are doing a bang up job!
🎉 🎊 🎈Congrats Luis!!! 🎈 🎊 🎉
EST wishes to Luis and his growing family!!
I appreciate the Miller Paint stir stick cameo. Nice!
Luis - treasure every moment you spend with your girl. They grow all too quickly. I remember holding my daughter on the palm of my hand like it was yesterday. She's now taller than me, smarter than me, and on Wednesday, I am driving her off to college. So yeah... treasure every moment while you can.
Man, when you started, I was convinced that I would have my cabinets in before you... then our house threw up other 'challenges'! Now, having dealt with 'most' of them, I feel like slowing down to see how yours go! Congrats to Luis and best of luck with the rest of the renovation!
Hahaha! My cabs could take a while, so the race is on 😅
Congratulations Luis to you and your wife!
Congrats Luis! And great job on the house both of you, keep it up!
I have really enjoyed this series. It makes me want to remodel my own future home. Thanks for the inspiration!
Going through the same thing myself! 1940s homes are a beast!!
Vycore is water proof. The wood will not breath in this area, moisture from the hotter air inside you house will get trapped in this location, eventually leading it to rot again. You need to cover the inside of your house ( the hot side) with water proof material, and the outside with tyvek or similar material, so the wood can breath with the outside air.
But I guess that at a time on the future you will replace the outside wall, and then you can add tyvek, and a an inch and a half of airgap to the outside wall. If you get a small leakage with such a construction (in a nasty storm or similar) it dries out before rot and fungus can attack the wood.
Love your content!
Cheers from Norway!
Luis, congrats on the new arrival!
Congratulations Luis! My best wishes to you and your family!
It's looking great there, Michael! You guys killed it! 😃
Congrats, Luis! I wish her a long and prosper life!
Stay safe there with your families! 🖖😊
Congrats Luis!! You'll love being a dad, best thing ever.
Congratulations Luis on the birth of your baby girl, my 4th grandchild is being born on Thursday 17th, and it is also a girl, which then gives us 2 of each
Congrats to Luis and your family.
Do share how the tankless system works for your household. My understanding is they work in a pinch but often are energy sinks where a tank can heat and hold the heat better. If you have a remote sink and want hot water, this is the perfect use case for that remote sink, a remote tankless system. Yet usually people install 1 tankless system, not several in a home.
Congratulations Luis and family.
I'm enjoying this great series. Keep'm coming! :o)
Congrats Luis!!! Michael, can you make something cool and unique with the old insulators ? Maybe a lamp or a trivet?
Congratulations Luis and family!
Those electrical insulators might have a resale value, I know here in Australia a lot of old farmers are always looking for them to run electric fences. Congrats, Luis and Partner on the new addition to your family.
Congrats Luis and your wife(didn't catch her name, SORRY!)
I like these videos because you don't skimp on the demo footage even if it's sped up. I like to see it because it gives me a better understanding of what to expect when demoing which is usually the unexpected. I like your explanation of what is going on and how you end up with the solution to the little road bumps you come upon. Glad to see you tackling issues as you go along instead of saying "well let's wall it up and deal with it another day". Nope "handle it while we've got it open" is the better route to go. Waiting on the next one!
Congratulations Luis & family!!!!
Congrats, Luis! Praying for you and your family :)
🎉 congrats Luis!!!🎉
The house looks like it is coming along great! Just one step at a time. Also congrats to Luis!
Soooo much work but it's coming along really well. Congratulations to Luis. That will be one of the highlights of your life.
Bill
Congrats on the little one brother!!
Congrats Luis!. Excellent video Michael !
I don't know how your water tastes up in your neck of the woods...but if it doesn't I would recommend running the fridge line to under the sink (or somewhere else that is easily accessible) and put in an in-line filter or RO system. We have an RO system under the sink to get good drinking water both at the sink and from the fridge.
Congrats Luis! Great video Michael
Congratulations Luiz! Happy baby!
Luis, Congrats on the new baby girl! Michael, things are really coming together! Can’t wait to see the cabinet build. I know it will all look amazing when it’s done.
CONGRATS LUIS AND FAMILY!!!
Congats Luis!!! Big change for you and your wife! They growup fast, so take pics, keep a journal and make time to be part of her life!
Congratulations, Luis and your wife, who did all the hard work 😊. Michael I can't believe just how lucky you are, the house renovation is going unbelievably great and at the moment ZERO problem's or what I'd class as problem's, hence the lucky remark!!!. As a subscriber I really was expecting a video or two since Luis became a dad, but you haven't uploaded anything whatsoever within the past four weeks 🤔. Considering that you were the one who said that you had a few video's ready to upload 😮. That said I do hope that the kitchen cabinets your building are looking good and that we get to see the progress of them or anything else very soon !!! As always buddy 💯% 👍 🇬🇧.
P.s. One of the things that alway's stays in your mind is the fact that when my children were babies, I remember that i had many, many drives at really silly times of night especially when they were teething and this was the ONLY thing that we could do to help them to fall asleep!!!. Needless to say driving around at 3am didn't do me any favours with my sleep especially when I was getting up for work at 5am. Luis will quickly find this out 😅😊
#DownWithIt shared this with everyone ❤❤❤ great job 👏 👍
Appreciate you❤❤❤
@@DownWithit appreciate you too 🙏💙
All the best to you Luis and your partner and new baby 🎉 So good to have have some time to enjoy your new addition, making precious memories. Also, great work on the build, guys. You’ve achieved so much.
Congratulations Luis!!!🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
Congratulations, Luis! I am enjoying this project very much. It is nice to see someone remodel an old house who appreciates way it was made.
Congratulations to Luis!
You should definitely insulate as much as possible. Not only does it help with the heating bill, but it also slows down the heating of the house in the summer. Not a fan of spray foam, go mineral wool, or better yet: The ecological stuff from Steico.
Congratz Luis! 🎉🎉🎉
Congratulations 🎉❤on your sweet baby girl! Also awesome job on all the work you got done looking good!
Blessings Luis, Mama and Bubs X
Awesome. Cant wait to see how it looks finished😊
I've watched your channel for awhile and enjoyed all of the content. I have to say that popsicle stick template trick is the best thing I've ever seen! thank you for adding a new skill to my toolbox
Congratulations Luis I wish you all health wealth and happiness. I'm new to your channel but I really enjoy what I've seen so far so I will go back over your previous shows and get a better feel for what you do. I do like your logo brother it's pretty neat. All the very best from Scotland.
Loving this series. Dreaming of being able to do this to a place I can call mine someday.
I live in Central California. 20° in winter 120° in summer. Most of our houses have HVAC in the attic.
When I was in trade school in the 1960’s I was taught how to install knob and tube wiring. In some ways it was a pretty good system with the tube providing a smooth path for cables through studs and joists. Much prefer the more modern systems for safety and efficiency.
An amazing amount of work guys!! Enjoy the moment of youth Luis, before you know it you will be like us old folks "My babies are getting to an age they should be having their own babies" :) That rough and random fireplace, my aesthetic would leave it as-is and not tile over it.
What's wrong with me that while watching this, the thing that "jumped out at me" was the term, "Fortunately, we got lucky" (approx. 12:00), which I immediately started wondering about the redundancy of? Other than that, I'm enjoying the journey! Thanks!
